• Wierd characters in exported csv files when converting

  Hey guys, I came across a problem I cannot solve on my own concerning the downloadable csv formatted trends data files from Google Insights for Search. I'm to lazy to reformat the files I4S gives me manually what means: Extracting the section with the actual trends data and reformatting the columns so that I can use it with a modelling program I do for school. So I wrote a tiny script the should do the work for me: Taking a file, do some magic and give me a new file in proper format. What it's supposed to do is reading the file contents, extracting the trends section, splitting it by newlines, splitting each line and then reorder the columns and maybe reformat them. When looking at a untouched I4S csv file it looks normal containing CR LF caracters at line breaks (maybe thats only because I'm using Windows). When just reading the contents and then writing them to a new file using the script wierd asian characters appear between CR and LF. I tried the script with a manually written similar looking file and even tried a csv file from Google Trends and it works fine. I use Python and the script (snippet) I used for the following example looks like this: # Read from an input file file = open(file,"r") contents = file.read() file.close() cfile = open("m.log","w+") cfile.write(contents) cfile.close() Has anybody an idea why those characters appear??? • FusionCharts vs GoogleCharts vs HighCharts suggestions required for commercial use

  I find that FusionCharts v3 evaluation and HighCharts cannot be used for commercial purpose. Google charts is the best option but those are not as good looking as any of the above. They don't even have 3d charts although their visualization API does support 3D which i cannot find. Is there any open source graphing or charting solution available which can be used in commercial products? I even looked in to Open Flash Charts 2 but found that the developer had left the project long time a go and the currently out libs are way too buggy. I had to fix more than 50 bugs to get their 1 chart working. I tried to fix others but couldn't get Pie charts etc. working. What i'm looking for is - 1. Attractive 3d column chart. 2. 3d Pie Chart. 3. Spline Chart. 4. Geographical Chart. Does anyone knows any open source or free solution which can be used for commercial products? Cheers!

• How to get PHP command line to work with PDO?

  I want to work with PDO, through PHP command line. It works perfect through the PHP web API, but not through the command line. But when I execute the command: php test.php, it says unknown class PDO. I think it has something to do with the thread-safety difference. • GAE AttributeError

  My GAE app runs fine from my computer, but when I upload it, I start getting an AttributeError, specifically: AttributeError: 'dict' object has no attribute 'item' I am using the pylast interface (an API for last.fm--link). Specifically, I am accessing a list of variables of this type: SimilarItem = _namedtuple("SimilarItem", ["item", "match"]) I have a variable of this type, call it sim, and I am trying to access sim.item when I get the attribute error. I should note that I am using Python 2.6 on my computer, and I understand that GAE runs on Python 2.5. Would that make a difference here? I thought they were backwards-compatible. Lastly, I think it could be a possible problem with the modules that pylast imports--maybe they don't work with GAE or something? I did some research but I didn't get any results. • Best practices on using URIs as parameter value in REST calls.

  I am designing a REST API where some resources can be filtered through query parameters. In some cases, these filter values would be resources from the same REST API. This makes for longish and pretty unreadable URIs. While this is not too much of a problem in itself because the URIs are meant to be created and manipulated programmatically, it makes for some painful debugging. I was thinking of allowing shortcuts to URIs used as filter values and I wonder if this is allowed according to the REST architecture and if there are any best practices. For example: I have a resource that gets me Java classes. Then the following request would give me all Java classes: GET http://example.org/api/v1/class Suppose I want all subclasses of the Collection Java class, then I would use the following request: GET http://example.org/api/v1/class?has-supertype=http://example.org/api/v1/class/collection That request would return me Vector, ArrayList and all other subclasses of the Collection Java class. That URI is quite long though. I could already shorten it by allowing hs as an alias for has-supertype. This would give me: GET http://example.org/api/v1/class?hs=http://example.org/api/v1/class/collection Another way to allow shorter URIs would be to allow aliases for URI prefixes. For example, I could define class as an alias for the URI prefix http://example.org/api/v1/class/. Which would give me the following possibility: GET http://example.org/api/v1/class?hs=class:collection Another possibility would be to remove the class alias entirely and always prefix the parameter value with http://example.org/api/v1/class/ as this is the only thing I would support. This would turn the request for all subtypes of Collection into: GET http://example.org/api/v1/class?hs=collection Do these "simplifications" of the original request URI still conform to the principles of a REST architecture? Or did I just go off the deep end?

• Facebook Connect for simple authentication?

  Hi I have an ASP.net website which I want to introduce 'Facebook Connect' functionality into, purely for account login/creation purposes. I want a user to be able to click the 'Login using Facebook' type button, and to then log that user into my website based on a userid lookup from the Facebook response. I have a couple of questions surrounding this: Presumeably I can do all of this using the Facebook API - without the need for an actual pretty public facing 'application' on Facebook? I simply want to utilise the Facebook API for authenticating an account. I'm not interested in creating some app for doing something 'within' facebook itself. I have located some code snippets online and tried using the Facebook Developer Toolkit, calling the getInfo method, and whilst it does come back to my website with a uid, none of the other user information is present within the response, like Email, Name etc. The uid is the only populated field in the response. • asyncronous call doesn't return json

  I am running wamp on an xp box. I am fairly new to web programming, this is for a student project, and have run out of avenues to try to solve this problem. Problem We have client side JavaScript code that uses GDownloadUrl- from the Google api- to wrap xmlHttpRequest calls to a php server side program that is accessing our database. In my callback program, the result of this call is always " ". However, if I use an alert to display the http:// call, with the arguments, and cut and paste that into my browser, the json I expected is displayed. I zipped my dir containing all the files, and tried it out on another team member's computer, and they were able to get the json in the callback function. Note this is exactly the same code and structure I was using, he just unzipped and ran. So now I'm thinking this is something about Firefox or Wamp? Would this be a config problem? I'm running wamp server 2.0, and Firefox 3.5.8. I have no problems with syncronous php, or reading in files asyncronously. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rebecca

• getting maps to accept a dynamically generated KML file?

  Hi. I have a button that launches the google maps app on my device via an intent. I want to be able to pass it a php page that generates a KML file. I have done this on a website before using the googlemaps api in JS - but it doesn't seem to work on Android. Is this just not possible, or are there other ways to construct the intent that might work?

• Dropping not working on Chrome Mac version

  I tried to work with html5 drag&drop api, and it works very well on my chrome 20.0.1132 on windows machine, but most fun - that the same version of chrome on mac os lion is not working. I mean dragstart is working, but drop event, dragleave, dragover is not fired. • problems getting HTTPRiot working

I've got a log in all the delegate methods, and I'm also looking at the webserver log. • Can you write files in Chrome 8?

  I'm wondering if, with the new File API exposed in Chrome (I'm not concerned with cross-browser support at this time), it would be possible to write back to files opened via a file input. You can see an example of what I'm trying to accomplish here: http://www.grehz.com/ide. I know I can use server side scripts to dynamically create the files and allow the user to download them normally. I'm hoping that there's a way to accomplish this purely client side. I had read somewhere that you can write to files opened via a file input. I haven't been able to find any examples of this, though I have seen passing references to a FileWriter class. I would be completely not surprised if this wasn't possible though (it seems likely that there are security issues with this). Just looking for some guidance or resources. UPDATE: I was reading here: http://dev.w3.org/2009/dap/file-system/file-writer.html As I was playing around in Chrome, it looks like FileSaver and FileWriter are not implemented, but BlobBuilder is. I can call getBlob() on the BB object, is there any way I can then save that without FileSave or FileWriter?

I'm nearly done writing a free app for iPhone, and I'm at the stage where I'm going to put ads into the app. I've had mixed success in the past with iAd (their fill rates have been atrocious recently, and their payouts have cut by about 75% over the past 4 months or so), and would like to know how much ad revenue you, the community, has seen from the various ad APIs you've used for your iPhone apps. This isn't a request for opinion, i.e. which is 'better', only what kinds of numbers you're seeing. I don't need absolute figures, but 'iAd pays x% higher than AdMob, and y% lower than AdSense' would be extremely helpful to me as I make my decision as to which ad API to integrate into my App. Also, have you had any experience or success with integrating multiple ad APIs into the same app? That's something I'm considering doing in my current iAd-filled apps (particularly my iPad app, which has yet to receive a single impression after nearly 60,000 requests)... something like: 1) Request-from-iAd 2) if that fails, request-from-adSense 3) if that fails, request-from-adMob 4) if that fails, ... etc.

• Ubuntu One - Files API - Cloud - More detailed info somehwere?

  I am just starting on a mobile app for Ubuntu One, and I'm reviewing the info at https://one.ubuntu.com/developer/files/store_files/cloud I find the information a bit lacking though. It's a nice reference, but for someone not familiar with it, I had to goggle search to find out what a "volume" was exactly (its kind of obvious, but never hurts to know the specifics) There's also things like: GET /api/file_storage/v1/volumes Return a JSON list of Volume Representations, one for each volume. A volume is a synced folder, or the Ubuntu One folder, owned by the user. Note that all volume paths begin with ~.: ... but there's no such thing as a JSON "list". Does it mean array ? And other things... So I was wondering if here existed another page with more detailed information. Maybe some sample request / responses or something? I could just write a little proof of concept app to answer some of these questions... but I prefer not to unless I have to. Thanks

  The Team Project Picker in TFS 2011 looks gorgeous. I specially like the status bar on the working state, at least let’s you know that the project picker is still working on getting the details and of course the new icons for team project collection and team projects are stunning too.     How do I get the Team Project Picker using the TFS API? That is fairly straight forward. Add a reference to the Microsoft.TeamFoundation.Client dll available in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\ReferenceAssemblies\v2.0 and use the below code, public void ConnectToTfs() { TeamProjectPicker tfsPP = new TeamProjectPicker(TeamProjectPickerMode.MultiProject, false, new UICredentialsProvider()); tfsPP.ShowDialog(); }   Download a sample application here Why does my project picker look different? You might run into an issue, where the project picker looks like the below, When the Team Project Picker is run from inside of VS the colour theme will be picked up from VS itself. When running outside of VS the windows theme colours are used, so there can be differences between the two. Currently there isn’t a way to change that since the dialog itself is not public (just the wrapper that launches the dialog). So don’t be surprised if the Team Project Picker looks different then expected :-]

• Detect blocked popup in Chrome

  I am aware of javascript techniques to detect whether a popup is blocked in other browsers (as described in the answer to this question). Here's the basic test: var newWin = window.open(url); if(!newWin || newWin.closed || typeof newWin.closed=='undefined') { //POPUP BLOCKED } But this does not work in Chrome. The "POPUP BLOCKED" section is never reached when the popup is blocked. Of course, the test is working to an extent since Chrome doesn't actually block the popup, but opens it in a tiny minimized window at the lower right corner which lists "blocked" popups. What I would like to do is be able to tell if the popup was blocked by Chrome's popup blocker. I try to avoid browser sniffing in favor of feature detection. Is there a way to do this without browser sniffing? Edit: I have now tried making use of newWin.outerHeight, newWin.left, and other similar properties to accomplish this. Google Chrome returns all position and height values as 0 when the popup is blocked. Unfortunately, it also returns the same values even if the popup is actually opened for an unknown amount of time. After some magical period (a couple of seconds in my testing), the location and size information is returned as the correct values. In other words, I'm still no closer to figuring this out. Any help would be appreciated.

• Is it OK to set "Cache-Control: public" when sending “304 Not Modified” for images stored in the dat

  After asking a question about sending “304 Not Modified” for images stored in the in the Google App Engine datastore, I now have a question about Cache-Control. My app now sends Last-Modified and Etag, but by default GAE alsto sends Cache-Control: no-cache. According to this page: The “no-cache” directive, according to the RFC, tells the browser that it should revalidate with the server before serving the page from the cache. [...] In practice, IE and Firefox have started treating the no-cache directive as if it instructs the browser not to even cache the page. As I DO want browsers to cache the image, I've added the following line to my code: self.response.headers['Cache-Control'] = "public" According to the same page as before: The “cache-control: public” directive [...] tells the browser and proxies [...] that the page may be cached. This is good for non-sensitive pages, as caching improves performance. The question is if this could be harmful to the application in some way? Would it be best to send Cache-Control: must-revalidate to "force" the browser to revalidate (I suppose that is the behavior that was originally the reason behind sending Cache-Control: no-cache) This directive insists that the browser must revalidate the page against the server before serving it from cache. Note that it implicitly lets the browser cache the page.

  I'm currently seeing the warnings below when trying to run my Google App Engine/Grails test app in Eclipse. • How to solve validation error on xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation in jdoconfig.xml

  Since I updated today to GAE 1.7.2.1, I'm having validation errors in eclipse in all my jdoconfig.xml files. I have the default jdoconfig.xml content : [...] <jdoconfig xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/jdo/jdoconfig" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/jdo/jdoconfig"> [...] And eclipse validation throws: Referenced file contains errors (http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/jdo/jdoconfig). For more information, right click on the message in the Problems View and select "Show Details..." When clicking on details I can see a bunch of lines like: s4s-elt-character: Non-whitespace characters are not allowed in schema elements other than 'xs:appinfo' and 'xs:documentation'. Saw 'var_U = "undefined";'. In different lines and different content in "Saw ... " It occurs in every single project I start using the "New Web Application Project..." from the google plugin. So does anyone have this problem? Any fix?

• Django authentication in django nonrel on GAE

  I'm using the Django nonrel project on a google app engine project running locally in development. I've created my own models and these are fine when they are saved and retrieved in the datastore. I'm hoping to use django.contrib.auth to provide the user functionality. I can use the shell to create users and these get assigned an ID. When I create one of my own models which references User I have to pass in a user ID as it quite rightly fails otherwise. However, checking via the gae admin interface I can't see the User model in the datastore for the users I've created via the shell. Nor can I retreive the user details from one of my models which references them. Calls to mymodel.user.username return nothing. Nor can I log into admin using the username and password I've set up. I can see saved versions of the models I've made in the gae admin app. I get the impression that users are being created somewhere other than the datastore. Is there something else I need to do to use the standard contrib.auth users with django-nonrel and gae?

Why? Then I carry out further investigation, I use Safari and type in the url below: http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/services/search/local?v=1.0&q=???
