  • Can you share offline files cache with two user accounts?

    I have a new laptop that I use for both home and work. It runs windows 7 ultimate, and is joined to the domain at work. It is okay to use this laptop for both work and personal activities, and I even have an account set up on the local machine in addition to the work domain account specifically for this to help keep the two separate. At home, I have a file server that I use to share files and printers with my wife's laptop, this new laptop, and my old desktop which will now become the family machine. My mp3 library is on there, among other things. What I want to do is use the windows Offline Files feature to keep a synced copy of my music library on the laptop. That part is easy. What's tricky is that I want to share this offline cache between both the local account on the laptop and my work domain account. I could do them both separately, but then I have two copies of a very large music library stored locally. This also means twice the sync burden, when the domain account is rarely connected to the file share. I really want to be able to sync from the local machine account only, and have the domain account be able to use the synced files. I know where the offline file cache is kept (\Windows\CSC) and I can find the cached files (not encrypted), but permissions on the cache are setup weird, and so using that cache directly is not trivial. Any ideas appreciated.

  • Installing Tcl and Tix in OSX

    Hello, I'm having trouble installing Tix on OSX the version of Tix I am using is 8.4.3.     (Surprised I didn't already find an answer here to this!) I've got a computer on which I'd like to back up the iTunes library – music, movies, apps, everything. We're talking multiple gigabytes. Unfortunately, it seems that iTunes' own built-in "Back Up to Disc" feature (the only backup feature I can find in iTunes) only functions with a CD or DVD writer/burner. The computer in question does not have a DVD burner. While it has a CD burner, attempting to back up to CDs would require dozens of discs plus more time than I'm willing to spend swapping them. So: What is the recommended way to back up an entire iTunes library on a Windows computer, to a non-CD/DVD location such as an external hard drive or a network shared folder? Then, once such a backup has been performed, what is the process for restoring the library – e.g. after the computer has been repaved with a new version of Windows – so that iTunes is resurrected whole and recognizes devices it syncs with? Has it also got that ease of use like swapping drives on the go, simply extend capacity by plugging in new drives, notify me of drive errors, disk failure protection, dynamic space of "partitions", better/worse effective capacity, etc. Which is more secure? Am I able to simply replace a bad drive with a new one on unraid? What happens if my pc fails? Lets say the cpu overheats. Since I have a complete pc which is going to be replaced, I only have to pay the software to use unraid. I am going to use my nas for: music library (how well does it integrate with iTunes? ) picture library movie library development (i need to be able to be to use time machine) I am going to use this nas with a MacBook pro. My current disks: 2x 500Gb 1x 1.5Tb 1x 2Tb On a drobo fs I would have 2.26 Tb of space. What would it be on unraid? Is FreeNAS also an alternative?

Shouldn't that be enough to give it the proper super user privileges? Update: As it turns out MacOS X was restarting nginx after I'd stopped it, because the launchd plist in ~/Library/LaunchAgents had set it to 'KeepAlive'. However, because I installed this plist into my local user's LaunchAgents folder as opposed to /Library/LaunchAgents (or better yet /Library/LaunchDaemons, which run before you even log on), it wasn't executed as root. Because of an error about not having permissions to use port 80, it actually exited right away, but still wrote to the same log file as the nginx process I started with sudo. I had thought the errors stemming from the automatic restart were actually coming from my manual restart via sudo. So, bottom line, problem solved. The real problem here was the homebrew instructions specifically asking you to install the plist file into an area that wouldn't allow a local site to use port 80.

  • Mac: window manager frozen, have ssh access

    I have a Mac which regularly runs into a problem. The user interface stops reponding, showing a "frozen" user interface. The mouse is still moving but clicking does not trigger anything. This happens about once a week. Solution so far is to force switch-off the Mac and reboot it. I have ssh root access to the Mac. Killing (kill -9) the active application has no visible impact on what is shown on the screen. Any ideas on how to diagnose this? Is there a way to restart the window manager from the ssh shell? Killing /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/CoreGraphics.framework/Resources/WindowServer seems not to be possible. The Mac is an early 2008 iMac and runs Lion with latest updates. /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports is empty. Update: Problem stays after update to Mountain Lion. The WindowServer process is in "uninterruptible wait" state ("U" flag in ps output set): imac:~ root# ps ax|awk "NR==1|| /WindowServer/"|grep -v awk PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 86 ?? If the user tries to start the application by clicking the button in the ThinApp-Application, it displays the following errors: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library R6034 An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly. Please contact the application's support team for more information. After clicking "OK" it displays: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! R6030 - CRT not initialized So, does the customer have to install some components into his ThinApp (if yes, which?) to get things working? All clients have the requirements installed (.Net-framework for example) and start the .exe from the mapped drive. The ThinApp-Application tries to start this application and throws the mentioned exceptions. AFAIK there are no entry points for this application configured. What I should also mention is: The .Net-Application crashes during execution. That means, we have a debug mode implemented that shows what the application is doing. The application shows what it's doing and after some steps it crashes. The interesting point is: It's a .Net-application, not a C++ Application.

  • Windows Media Center doesn't see my movies

    I am trying to configure my Windows Media Center (Windows 7 Ultimate). I selected folder with my movies and added it to the library, but when I went to the movies library, it says "There are no items in this library yet - Windows Media Center is searching for media files in the background...". I have all necessary codecs installed, Windows Media Player opens those movies correctly. When I right click on the file - Open with - Windows Media Center it also plays them without any problem. Any ideas why they don't appear in the libraries? Edit: Movies are coded with divx and xvid codecs and they have ".avi" extension. Windows doesn't have problems playing them. I told Media Center where the files are. I even pointed Windows Media Center to a folder with only one .avi file it still couldn't find anything there. (I have given it quiet some time, even though searching in the directory with only one file shouldn't take more than a few seconds.) When I add a folder with a lot of movies, I get a dialog box "You can wait while media is added or select OK to continue using Windows Media Center.".                                                                        At the end it says it added about 90 movies, but when I go to the libraries, it's still empty.

  • Mac updated just now, postgres now broken

    I run postgres 9.1 / ruby 1.9.2 / rails 3.1.0 on a maxbook air for local dev. It's all been running smoothly for months, (though this is the first time I've done development on a mac.) It's a macbook air from last year, and today I got the mac osx software update message as I have a few times before, and my system downloaded approx 450mb of updates and restarted. It now says it's on OSX 10.7.3. Point is, postgres has stopped working, when I start my thin server (mirror heroku cedar) as normal, and then browse to my rails app I get: PG::Error could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432"? What happened? After browsing around a few questions I'm still confused, but here's some extra info: Running psql from command line gives same error I can run pgadmin 3 and connect via it and run SQL no problems Running which psql shows the version as /usr/bin/psql I created a PostgreSQL user back when I got the mac (it's always been on lion) I've no idea why, almost certainly I was following a tutorial which I neglected to store in my notes. Point is I am aware there is a _postgres user as well. I know it's rubbish, but apart from a note on passwords, I don't have any extra info on how I configured postgres - though the obvious implication is that I did not use the _postgres user. Anyone have suggestions or information on what might have changed / what I can try to debug and fix? Thanks. When I run the same report from the Report Builder, it returns data.   • Setting up a lab with Windows 2003 server and windows 7 clients

    We are overhauling a lab with new machines with Windows 7 (as clients - around 150 of them). In the current infrastructure we have students logging in using a generic student id (as having individual student accounts doesn't really serve any additional purpose). This account, as you would imagine is a locked down one that can run a few (age old) softwares required by students in the class. Currently, the individual machines have XP images created by BartPE. What should be an ideal infrastructure design to cater to such a need with Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 clients? It would be great if you can give me pointers to what concepts and background I need to have (like GPO), any design guidelines, best practices?

  • Mac updated just now, postgres now broken

    I run postgres 9.1 / ruby 1.9.2 / rails 3.1.0 on a maxbook air for local dev. It's all been running smoothly for months, (though this is the first time I've done development on a mac.) It's a macbook air from last year, and today I got the mac osx software update message as I have a few times before, and my system downloaded approx 450mb of updates and restarted. It now says it's on OSX 10.7.3. Point is, postgres has stopped working, when I start my thin server (mirror heroku cedar) as normal, and then browse to my rails app I get: PG::Error could not connect to server: Permission denied Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/var/pgsql_socket/.s.PGSQL.5432"? What happened? After browsing around a few questions I'm still confused, but here's some extra info: Running psql from command line gives same error I can run pgadmin 3 and connect via it and run SQL no problems Running which psql shows the version as /usr/bin/psql I created a PostgreSQL user back when I got the mac (it's always been on lion) I've no idea why, almost certainly I was following a tutorial which I neglected to store in my notes. Point is I am aware there is a _postgres user as well. I know it's rubbish, but apart from a note on passwords, I don't have any extra info on how I configured postgres - though the obvious implication is that I did not use the _postgres user. Anyone have suggestions or information on what might have changed / what I can try to debug and fix? Thanks.     I have an iPod touch that I synched with my Windows computer (iTunes 9.0 I think) until my harddrive failed and I lost my entire library. I rebuilt the library (songs) from a year old backup (and various other source for songs) but my playlists and ratings are of course a year old. My iPod itself has most of the playlists and ratings I care most about (favorite songs and albums, rated 4 and 5, for example). I have a catch 22 situation where I feel nervous that I haven't backed up my iPod in around 4 months (when my drive failed) so I'd like to back it up as soon as possible... but if I back it up I have to clear all the songs and playlists and copy them back, which I can't really do since I need to rebuild my playlists on my computer first (using the data only available on my iPod!) The question: is there a better way to READ the information off my iPod than doing it manually, song by song and album by album and playlist by playlist (XML, text dump, database, spreadsheet, anything). In other words, mostly I want the information (metadata like ratings and playlists, not songs) copied off the iPod so I can more quickly get my iTunes library ratings and playlists re-built (manually) so I can finally wipe the music and back up my apps, etc. Then I'd like to copy the music back immediately. The part I'd like to avoid is manually navigating everything on my iPod to read through all the playlists and ratings (50 GB, 6,000+ songs) as I re-enter all of that data by hand. I've done a few dozen albums and it's pretty time consuming having to tap around on the iPod. Activity monitor gives me a mysqld process running by me, and everytime i KILL the process both via Activity Monitor and via kill =9 pid it starts right back up.. Sampling the process points back to the MAMP mysqld.. wtf?! About to throw MAMP out the window and boot up a VM of CentOS =)

  • Missing menu items for Azure SQL tables within SQL Server Management Studio?

    I have a table (say Table1) that is replicated via SQL Data Sync Agent across a local SQL Server 2012 as well as an Azure SQL Server (part of Microsoft Azure). Everything about Table1 (schema, table values etc ) is identical to the best of my understanding. However, when I list and right click Table1 from Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2012 (SSMS), I get some very different menu options, even for seemingly basic stuff. Lets focus only on the 'Design' menu item: It is visible for Table1 on the local SQL server in SSMS It is missing for Table1 on Azure SQL via SSMS It is visible for Table1 (as Open Table Definition) on Azure SQL when reaching it via Visual Studio 2012 (Server Explorer - Data connections) This is seen in the screenshots below: Now I use scripts from some real stuff (esp when I need to check in the SQL scripts etc) but this difference concerns me to some extent. Am I witnessing just a tools artifact in SQL Server Management Studio when connecting to Azure SQL? or is it something more serious about limitations of Azure SQL itself (although, just seeing the Design surface is so basic!)?

  • On clients use generic driver for printer shared by CUPS

    I know this worked really easy with a recent CUPS version some years ago. Unfortunately I fail to do the following with latest CUPS nowadays. How to share a printer without using printer specific drivers on the clients with CUPS? The printer is a Samsung ML-2010. The important fact is that it needs a quite specific library for printing called splix. That is installed on the server and prints well. What makes trouble is using that printer over the network. I found out how to use Avahi under Linux to make use of DNSSD to advertise and discover printers. But as far as I understand the new CUPS offers the internal driver interface on the network. This has 2 major issues: anybody can fiddle with the driver and I don't trust any uncommon printer library to be "network secure" anyone who wants to use my printer including guests needs to install the specific drivers first I remember the old days when I could enable "Share this printer" on the CUPS server and all clients would magically detect the printer and just send their job data to the server and have it do the driver stuff. After everything a read I guess this is related to the changes Apple introduced with CUPS including dropping of the integrated network discovery protocol. If it helps: Server: Ubuntu LTS 12.04 Server with CUPS 1.5.3 Client: Arch Linux with current CUPS 1.6.1 On another box with Ubuntu the printer was setup automatically at least but the mechanism used the Splix library for that.

  • The suggested way to handle pip(easy_install) with homebrew?

    I know there are brew-gem and brew-pip but it is still really easy to get confused. Let's say my Mac OS X is 10.7.2. There are at least, as far as I know, 3 locations for Python modules (assume 2.7): /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/ /Library/Python/2.7/site-packages /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/ (controlled within homebrew) For some Python modules, pip install them into 2, the so-called local/customized Python module location, and everything looks and works great. Ex, readline by *easy_install* (ipython suggested me to install readline by *easy_install* instead of pip) For some, it would try to install some miscellaneous files (ex, man, doc, ...) into system-wide location, which requires sudo! Ex, ipython insisted on installing man and doc into /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/share/, which violates permission issue and all I can do is to use sudo. For some Python modules installed by brew, they are symbolic linked to /usr/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/. Everything seems great except that you have to remember to add this location into PYTHONPATH. I am wondering any suggested and uniform way to handle those mass, or any explanation to make those stuff crystal clear.

  • Loading the preview function of AUCTeX 11.86 on macports Emacs-app 23.2.1 port.

    I've installed Emacs-app 23.2.1 via MacPorts and I'm trying to install AUCTeX 11.86 so that it will work on this installation. I've run the following configure line for AUCTeX and that seems to work. ./configure --with-emacs=/Applications/MacPorts/Emacs.app/Contents/MacOS/Emacs --with-lispdir=/Applications/MacPorts/Emacs.app/Contents/Resources/site-lisp/ --with-texmf-dir=/usr/local/texlive/2010basic/texmf-local/ make and make install seem to work, and I've added the following line to my init.el (require 'tex-site) as per the installation instructions. However, when I open a TeX file, the Preview menu does not show up (although the LaTeX menu does.) The following are some of my tests: M-x load-library RET preview-latex RET doesn't seem to do anything. M-x load-library RET preview RET brings up the Preview menu. Is it safe to somehow add the load-library preview to my init.el? Or do I risk mucking up something? I'm new to Emacs and primarily trying to learn it because of the AUCTeX preview features, but I don't feel very safe in this environment yet.
