• Why doesn't sed's automatic printing deliver the expected results?

  What Works This sed script works as intended: $ echo -e "2\n1\n4\n3" | sed -n 'h; n; G; p' 1 2 3 4 It takes pair of input lines at a time, and swaps the lines. So far, so good. What Doesn't Work What I don't understand is why I can't use sed's automatic printing. Since sed automatically prints the pattern space at the end of each execution cycle (except when it's suppressed), why is this not equivalent? $ echo -e "2\n1\n4\n3" | sed 'h; n; G' 2 1 2 4 3 4 What I think the code says is: The input line is copied to the hold space. The next line is read into the pattern space. The hold space is appended to the pattern space. The pattern space (line1 + newline + line2) is printed automatically because we've reached the end of the execution cycle. Obviously, I'm wrong...but I don't understand why. Can anyone explain why this second example breaks, and why print suppression is needed to yield the correct results?

• Random Loss of precision in Python ReadLine()

  Hi all, We have a process which takes a very large csv (1.6GB) and breaks it down into pieces (in this case 3). This runs nightly and normally doesn't give us any problems. When it ran last night, however, the first of the output files had lost precision on the numeric fields in the data. The active ingredient in the script are the lines: while lineCounter <= chunk: oOutFile.write(oInFile.readline()) lineCounter = lineCounter + 1 and the normal output might be something like StringField1; StringField2; StringField3; StringField4; 1000000; StringField5; 0.000054454 etc. On this one occasion and in this one output file the numeric fields were all output with 6 zeros at the end i.e. StringField1; StringField2; StringField3; StringField4; 1000000.000000; StringField5; 0.000000 We are using Python v2.6 (and don't want to upgrade unless we really have to) but we can't afford to lose this data. Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened? If the readline is doing some kind of implicit conversion is there a way to do a binary read, because we really just want this data to pass through untouched? It is very wierd to us that this only affected one of the output files generated by the same script, and when it was rerun the output was as expected. thanks Jack

• Invoking [SKProductsRequest start] hangs on iOS 4.0

  Encountering an issue with SKProductsRequest that is specific to iOS 4.0. The problematic code: - (void)requestProductData { NSSet *productIdentifiers = [NSSet setWithObjects:kLimitedDaysUpgradeProductId, kUnlimitedUpgradeProductId, nil]; self.productsRequest = [[SKProductsRequest alloc] initWithProductIdentifiers:productIdentifiers]; self.productsRequest.delegate = self; [self.productsRequest start]; } - (void)productsRequest:(SKProductsRequest *)request didReceiveResponse:(SKProductsResponse *)response { NSLog(@"didReceiveResponse"); } When [SKProductsRequest start] is invoked, the productsRequest:didReceiveResponse: delegate method is never invoked; further, the entire app hangs and is completely unresponsive to input. Obviously, this is a huge issue for our iOS 4.0 users as it not only breaks payments but makes the app completely unusable. Some other things to note: this only happens on iOS 4.0; iOS 4.2, 3.x are fine. Also: if the delegate is not set on the SKProductsRequest (i.e. comment out the line "self.productsRequest.delegate = self;"), the app doesn't hang (but of course in that case we have no way of getting the product info). Also, the problem still reproduces with everything stripped out of the productsRequest:didReceiveResponse: callback (that method never actually gets called). Finally, if the productIdentifiers NSSet object is initialized to an empty set, the hang doesn't occur. Has anybody else experienced this? Any ideas/thoughts on what could be going on here, and how we might be able to work around this?

• EXE stops working if containing folder is renamed. MSVCP90.dll

  This popup comes up as soon as the app is started: The program can't start because MSVCP90.dll is missing from your computer. Before anyone says "install the VC++ runtimes", wait! If I rename the folder containing my .EXE then the app runs. If I rename it back, it breaks. The app has been running for weeks without any changes to my system/VS installation (2008 SP1), we suddenly spotted this error a few days ago. Lost as to why the name of the dir is causing issues... again this has not changed in months and all our resource paths are relative anyway, e.g "../someOtherDir/...." It doesn't just do this on my PC, we have the /bin dir (the one containing EXE) in SVN and suddenly everyone started seeing the same issue, even though the binaries themselves seem just fine. Is it possible some additional data got put into SVN and that's the cause? Since it's not just one PC, there must be something either in SVN or the EXE itself... Note this popup comes before our code even gets to run.

• C++: Help with cin difference between Linux and Windows

  I have a Win32 console program that I wrote and it works fine. The program takes input from the user and performs some calculations and displays the output - standard stuff. For fun, I am trying to get the program to work on my Fedora box but I am running into an issue with clearing cin when the user inputs something that does not match my variable type. Here is the code in question: void CParameter::setPrincipal() { double principal = 0.0; cout << endl << "Please enter the loan principal: "; cin >> principal; while(principal <= 0) { if (cin.fail()) { cin.clear(); cin.ignore(INT_MAX, '\n'); } else { cout << endl << "Plese enter a number greater than zero. Please try again." << endl; cin >> principal; } } m_Parameter = principal; } This code works in Windows. For example, if the user tries to enter a char data type (versus double) then the program informs the user of the error, resets cin, and allows the user another opportunity to enter a valid value. When I move this code to Fedora, it compiles fine. When I run the program and enter an invalid data type, the while loop never breaks to allow the user to change the input. My questions are; how do I clear cin when invalid data is inputted in the Fedora environment? Also, how should I write this code so it will work in both environments (Windows & Linux)? • Pointers to a typed variable in C#: Interfase, Generic, object or Class? (Boxing/Unboxing)

  First of all, I apologize if this has been asked a thousand times. I read my C# book, I googled it, but I can't seem to find the answer I am looking for, or I am missing the point big time. I am very confused with the whole boxing/unboxing issue. Say I have fields of different classes, all returning typed variables (e.g. 'double') and I would like to have a variable point to any of these fields. In plain old C I would do something like: double * newVar; newVar = &oldVar; newVar = &anotherVar; ... In C#, it seems I could do an interfase, but would require that all fields be properties and named the same. Breaks apart when one of the properties doesn't have the same name or is not a property. I could also create a generic class returning double, but seems a bit absurd to create a class to represent a 'double', when a 'double' class already exists. If I am not mistaken, it doesn't even need to be generic, could be a simple class returning double. I could create an object and box the typed variable to the newly created object, but then I would have to cast every time I use it. Of course, I always have the unsafe option... but afraid of getting to unknown memory space, divide by zero and bring an end to this world. None of these seem to be the same as the old simple 'double * variable'. Am I missing something here?

• Update paths of already-created Paperclip attachments

  I used to have this buggy Paperclip config: class Photo < ActiveRecord::Base has_attached_file :image, :storage => :s3, :styles => { :medium => "600x600>", :small => "320x320>", :thumb => "100x100#" }, :s3_credentials => "#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/s3.yml", :path => "/:style/:filename" end This is buggy because two images cannot have the same size and filename. To fix this, I changed the config to: class Photo < ActiveRecord::Base has_attached_file :image, :storage => :s3, :styles => { :medium => "600x600>", :small => "320x320>", :thumb => "100x100#" }, :s3_credentials => "#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/s3.yml", :path => "/:style/:id_:filename" end Unfortunately this breaks all URLs to attachments I've already created. How can I update those file paths or otherwise get the URLs to work?

• Is there such a thing as a MemberExpression that handles a many-to-many relationship?

  We're trying to make it easy to write strongly-typed code in all areas of our system, so rather than setting var sortColumn = "FirstName" we'd like to say sortOption = (p => p.FirstName). This works great if the sortOption is of type Expression<Func<Person, object>> (we actually use generics in our code but that doesn't matter). However, we run into problems for many-to-many relationships because this notation breaks down. Consider this simple code: internal class Business { public IQueryable<Address> Addresses { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } } internal class Address { public State MyState { get; set; } } internal class State { public string Abbreviation { get; set; } public int StateID { get; set; } } Is it possible to have this sort of MemberExpression to identify the StateID column off of a business? Again, the purpose of using this is not to return a StateID object, it's to just identify that property off of that entity (for sorting, filtering, and other purposes). It SEEMS to me that there should be some way to do this, even if it's not quite as pretty as foo = business.Addresses.SomeExtension(a => a.State.StateID);. Is this really possible? If more background is needed, take a look at this old question of mine. We've since updated the code significantly, but this should give you the general detailed idea of the context behind this question.

  Hi, my problem is, I'm trying to permute all posibilities for a 3x3 square and check if the combination is magic. I've added a tweak with (n%3==0) if statement that if the sum of numbers in row differs from 15 it breaks the creation of other two lines... but it doesn't work. Any suggestions? • Best strategies for reading J code

  I've been using J for a few months now, and I find that reading unfamiliar code (e.g. that I didn't write myself) is one of the most challenging aspects of the language, particularly when it's in tacit. After a while, I came up with this strategy: 1) Copy the code segment into a word document 2) Take each operator from (1) and place it on a separate line, so that it reads vertically 3) Replace each operator with its verbal description in the Vocabulary page 4) Do a rough translation from J syntax into English grammar 5) Use the translation to identify conceptually related components and separate them with line breaks 6) Write a description of what each component from (5) is supposed to do, in plain English prose 7) Write a description of what the whole program is supposed to do, based on (6) 8) Write an explanation of why the code from (1) can be said to represent the design concept from (7). Although I learn a lot from this process, I find it to be rather arduous and time-consuming -- especially if someone designed their program using a concept I never encountered before. So I wonder: do other people in the J community have favorite ways to figure out obscure code? If so, what are the advantages and disadvantages of these methods?

• problem using 'as_json' in my model and 'render :json' => in my controller (rails)

  Hi everyone. I am trying to create a unique json data structure, and I have run into a problem that I can't seem to figure out. In my controller, I am doing: favorite_ids = Favorites.all.map(&:photo_id) data = { :albums => PhotoAlbum.all.to_json, :photos => Photo.all.to_json(:favorite => lambda {|photo| favorite_ids.include?(photo.id)}) } render :json => data and in my model: def as_json(options = {}) { :name => self.name, :favorite => options[:favorite].is_a?(Proc) ? options[:favorite].call(self) : options[:favorite] } end The problem is, rails encodes the values of 'photos' & 'albums' (in my data hash) as JSON twice, and this breaks everything... The only way I could get this to work is if I call 'as_json' instead of 'to_json': data = { :albums => PhotoAlbum.all.as_json, :photos => Photo.all.as_json(:favorite => lambda {|photo| favorite_ids.include?(photo.id)}) } However, when I do this, my :favorite = lambda option no longer makes it into the model's as_json method.......... So, I either need a way to tell 'render :json' not to encode the values of the hash so I can use 'to_json' on the values myself, or I need a way to get the parameters passed into 'as_json' to actually show up there....... I hope someone here can help... Thanks!

• jQuery UI Accordion 1.6

  I'm using the jQuery UI Accordion 1.6 (http://docs.jquery.com/UI/Accordion), I've changed it a bit and made it work as I need and want it to work. There is just a few things off about it, but one of the major ones is something I just simply can't figure out how to make it work. The plugin is working as intended, it actually closes, opens, opens again, closes all together, etc. However, I'm trying to get the "Posted by..." information right underneath the Headline text. Also, I want the AUTHOR and 0 comments part to be a separate link, the problem is that they are inside the A CLASS (which opens the accordion). Maybe this isn't even a issue with the plugin, but I've run up on options. The jQuery is calling "A" here: I've tried switching this A to a div, but it just breaks. I thought, "Oh I have to alter my CSS", but either I'm doing it wrong, or its not even a jQuery issue, but a CSS one...I just can't figure this out rahhh@#$! Any help would be appreciated. • Ninject: Singleton binding syntax?

  I'm using Ninject 2.0 for the .Net 3.5 framework. I'm having difficulty with singleton binding. I have a class UserInputReader which implements IInputReader.   Situation: if we add two identic line items into a cart, we update line item quantity instead of adding a duplicate.In browser everything works fine but in unit testing section something fails because of an empty cycle in code. Which I wanted to use to update all prices. Why? Is that a unit test engine bug?   I am trying to create a collection_select that is dependent on another collection_select, following the railscasts episode #88.. The database includes a schedule of all cruise ships arrival dates. See attached schema diagram,... (The arrow side of the lines indicate has_many, the non-pointy side indicates belongs_to) In the "booking/new" view I have a collection_select for choosing a cruiseline, then another collection_select will appear for selecting a ship, then another for selecting the date that ship is in. If I ONLY put a collection_select for shipshedule it works fine(because of the direct association with the bookings model). However, if I try to add a collection_select for cruiselines....it breaks(Im assuming because their isnt a direct association). The collection_select for cruiselines returns an undefined method error for "cruiseline_id".....if I simply use "id" the collection_select works, but of course isnt fully functional due to incorrect naming of the form field. I have tried "has_many :shipschedules, :through = :cruiseships" in the cruiseline model and "has_many :bookings, :through = :shipschedules" in the cruiseships model... As you can see in the diagram, I need to access the cruiseships and cruiselines model through the bookings model. I have the models set up so a cruiseline has_many cruiseships, a cruiseship has_many shipschedules, and a shipschedule has_many bookings. But, the bookings model cant directly access the cruiseline model. How do I accomplish this? • Make var_dump look pretty

Is there a way to add in line breaks at least for this or display the var_dump in a way that's more readable? I'm open to jQuery suggestions on manipulating the string after it's posted.

• Script dies, I'm not sure why

  I'm trying to parse a 6,000 line 500 KB file into an array so I can import the data into our system. The problem is that the script stops executing somewhere between lines 3000-4000. There are no breaks in the code, we use it on other imports. If that is the case i would need to create a new Windows Boot Loader entry. This means i might want to use the /create parameter: /create Creates a new boot entry: bcdedit [/store filename] /create [id] /d description [/application apptype | /inherit [apptype] | /inherit DEVICE | /device] So i assume a syntax of: >bcdedit /create /d "The old Windows 7" /application osloader Where application can be one of the following types: Apptype Description BOOTSECTOR The boot sector application OSLOADER The Windows boot loader RESUME A resume application Unfortunately, the only documentation about osloader is "The Windows boot loader". i don't see how that can differentiate between Windows 8 on one hard drive, and Windows 7 on another. The other possible parameter when /create a boot loader is >bcdedit /create /D "Windows Vista" /device "The Quick Brown Fox" Unfortunately the documentation is missing for /device: /device Optional. If id is not set to a well-known identifier, the option that is used to specify the new boot entry as an additional device options entry. Since i did not set id to a well-known identifier, i must set /device to "the option that is used to specify the new boot entry as an additional device options entry". i know all those words; they're all English. But i have on idea what it is saying; those words in that order seem nonsensical. So i'm somewhat stymied. i don't want to be like Dan Stolts from Microsoft: I found no content that was particularly helpful when I hosed my machine by playing with BCDEdit. This post would have been ok if there was much more detail especially on the /set command OSDevice, etc. So once I got my machine fixed, I documented the solution and the information is here.... i mean, if a Microsoft guy can't even figure out how to use BCDEdit to edit his BCD, then what chance to i have? Which is a long-winded explanation of why the Windows 8 installer didn't detect the existing Windows 7 install. Normally the installer would have automatically created the required entries for dual-boot. Not that the reason i'm asking the question is important. 2 Really there's three drives, but the third is just bulk storage. The existence of a 3rd hard drive is irrelevant to the question. i only mention it in case someone wants to know why the screenshot has 3 hard drives when i only mention two. 3 i arbitrarily started numbering partitions at "zero"; not to imply that partitions are numbered starting at zero. i only mention partitions because i don't see how any boot-loader could do its job without knowing which partition, and which folder, an installation of Windows is located in. 4 i'm asking about BCDEdit. i tried Visual BCD Editor. It seems to be a visual BCD editor. That is to say that it's a GUI, but still uses the same terminology as BCDEdit, and requires the same knowledge that BCD doesn't document. 5 For simplicity sake we'll assume that all installation of Windows i want to dual-boot between are Windows Vista or later, making them all compatible with the BCDEdit and the binary boot loader. The alternative would require delving into the intricacies of the old ntloader. Nor am i asking about dual booting to Linux; or how to boot to a Virtual Hard Drive (vhd) image. Just modern versions of Windows on existing hard drives in the same machine. Note: You can ignore everything after the word Background. It's all pointless exposition to satisfy some people's need for "research effort" before they'll consider being helpful. Some people have even been known to summarily close questions unless there is research effort. Some people have been know to close questions if there is too much research effort. Some people close questions when i put the note saying that they can ignore everything after the Background out of spite. Some people are just grumpy.

• `svn checkout` on the SVN server causes the repo to break with a 301 error

  We have an nginx server which proxies to a standard set-up of Apache+SVN. The nginx set-up is a very simple proxy: server { server_name svn.ourdomain.tld; location / { proxy_pass http://localhost:8080; } } Apache is set-up as follows: <Location /> DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/svn AuthType Basic AuthName "Authentication Required" AuthUserFile /var/svn/.auth Require valid-user </Location> ...which allows us to access repositories using something like http://svn.ourdomain.tld/repo. We've been running this set-up now for about 2 years without issue. Recently we've found that we need to check out one of the repositories onto the server itself, however whenever we do so it seems to break the repo. From that point on, it will only respond with a 301 Moved Permanently error. We've tried: svn co file:///path/to/repo svn co svn://localhost/repo svn co svn://svn.ourdomain.tld/repo svn co svn+ssh://localhost/repo svn co svn+ssh://svn.ourdomain.tld/repo svn co http://localhost/repo svn co http://svn.ourdomain.tld/repo Also tried bypassing nginx, and get the same error: svn co http://localhost:8080/repo svn co http://svn.ourdomain.tld:8080/repo Checking out from a different machine works as expected until we attempt to check out on the server, after that it refuses with the same 301 error. What is more confusing is that this repository server also hosts our HudsonCI server, which can pulls and builds our projects hourly. This leads us to suspect that it's the svn client which is causing an error in communication. Its also very confusing that removing then re-creating the repo using svnadmin doesn't reset the error - the repo is still unavailable even though it's "new"! Restarting apache and subversion (svnserve) has no effect on this, or the original error. Version information: OS: 64-bit CentOS 4.2, 2.6.27 kernel svn client: 1.4.2 (same for both server and remote clients) svn server: 1.4.2 httpd: 2.2.3 UPDATE: This also happens with svn export when run on the repo server. Ran from any other box/client, there isn't a problem. Here's the workflow, to help clarify the error: [~repo-server~]# svnadmin create {repo}; chown -Rf www:www {repo} [remote-client]# svn checkout http://svn.ourdomain.tld/repo [remote-client]# svn add file; svn ci -m '' [~repo-server~]# cd /var/www; svn export file:///path/to/repo/trunk ourproject [remote-client]# svn update fails with 301 error I can also confirm that the hostname of the box doesn't have an effect here, which is very odd: whether or not svn.ourdomain.tld is added to /etc/hosts it still breaks - we thought it could be an issue with localhost routing, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Are we missing something in the documentation which states you can't checkout a repo when the server is on the same box? How can we stop the repos becoming corrupt when we checkout locally?

• Can I set up two computers up with the same monitors/keyboard/mouse in a modular way?

  I have a desktop computer computer (running Windows 7), and a laptop (running OSX Mountain Lion, and maybe Ubuntu 12 eventually). When the laptop is at home, I want both the desktop and the laptop to use the same (2+) monitors, the keyboard, and the mouse (or mice, if I add a track pad). I know about KVM switches, but I want something more complicated. I like to use Synergy to use both computers with one keyboard and mouse at the same time. Synergy requires that the keyboard and mouse be connected to one computer (the server), which shares them with other computers (clients) over wifi. the issue is that when one computer isn't logged in, Synergy doesn't work on it. Sometimes, I want my laptop to be the server (physically connected to the keyboard and mouse), and sometimes I want my desktop to be the server. This means that I need the keyboard/mouse/other USB devices to be able to switch computers without me playing musical plugs. To complicate things further, I don't always want the same desktop set up in terms of monitors. Sometimes, I want the desktop to have both monitors. Other times, I want the laptop to control both monitors. Sometimes I want the desktop to control one monitor, and the laptop to control the other. In any case, the keyboard and mouse need to be able to be physically connected to either computer without lots of fussing with plugs. This breaks down to at least this set of possible combinations: Desktop controls both monitors, and has a physical connection to keyboard and mouse Laptop controls both monitors, and has a physical connection to keyboard and mouse Desktop and laptop each control a monitor, but the desktop has a physical connection to the keyboard and mouse (which it shares with the laptop via wifi) Desktop and laptop each control a monitor, but the laptop has a physical connection to the keyboard an mouse (which it shares with the desktop via wifi) some usb devices connected via a usb hub need to be able to switch physical connection between computers, ideally without the keyboard and mouse switching computer connection There may be other combinations, but these are the main ones at the moment. Basically, I need a KVM switch which allows me to switch individual monitors/keyboard/mouse/usb hub between computers independently of each other, or a better solution. How can I set two computers up with the same monitors/mice/keyboard/usb hub without having to switch everything to one computer or the other all at the same time?

• installed openstack using devstack install shell script but getting 500 error when i try opening dashboard

  I followed the instructions at http://devstack.org/guides/single-machine.html to install OpenStack. I first installed Ubuntu on my Windows 7 PC using the officially supported Windows installer for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. And after that I followed the instructions at above page to install OpenStack. As per instructions, I should be able to access the dashboard aka Horizon, at http://192.168.1.4/ (thats the IP of the PC on which I installed Ubuntu-OpenStack). However I am getting a 500 error web page when I open that. How do I resolve this error? I want to set up a dev environment for OpenStack.
