PHP - Best practice to retain form values across postback

Hello, Complete PHP novice here, almost all my previous work was in ASP.NET. I am now working on a PHP project, and the first rock I have stumbled upon is retaining values across postback. For the most simple yet still realistic example, i have 10 dropdowns. They are not even databound yet, as that is my next step. They are simple dropdowns. I have my entire page inclosed in a tag. the onclick() event for each dropdown, calls a javascript function that will populate the corrosponding dropdowns hidden element, with the dropdowns selected value. Then, upon page reload, if that hidden value is not empty, i set the selected option = that of my hidden. This works great for a single postback. However, when another dropdown is changed, the original 1'st dropdown loses its value, due to its corrosponding hidden value losing its value as well! This draws me to look into using querystring, or sessions, or... some other idea. Could someone point me in the right direction, as to which option is the best in my situation? I am a PHP novice, however I am being required to do some pretty intense stuff for my skill level, so I need something flexable and preferribly somewhat easy to use. Thanks! -----edit----- A little more clarification on my question :) When i say 'PostBack' I am referring to the page/form being submitted. The control is passed back to the server, and the HTML/PHP code is executed again. As for the dropdowns & hiddens, the reason I used hidden variables to retain the "selected value" or "selected index", is so that when the page is submitted, I am able to redraw the dropdown with the previous selection, instead of defaulting back to the first index. When I use the $_POST[] command, I am unable to retrieve the dropdown by name, but I am able to retrieve the hidden value by name. This is why upon dropdown-changed event, I call javascript which sets the selected value from the dropdown into its corrosponding hidden.

How can I add my desired links to be read using PHP Universal FeedParser

Hello, I have been trying to use the PHP Universal FeedParser to read RSS feeds and display the output on my site. Problem is I am VERY green with this and although it seems very simple. the only link that is working is the link provided in the sample. When I try to add another address with the xml or rss.php extensions, I keep getting errors,the page is loading blank,or the designated area for the feeds is blank. In addition to this, how can I add multiple links to feeds in a syntactically correct manor and how can I limit the amount of feeds? Problem with TTWebController… alternative view controller template for UIWebView?

I have a UIWebView with content populated from a Last.fm API call. This content contains links, many of which are handled by parsing info from the URL in: - (BOOL)webView:(UIWebView *)aWbView shouldStartLoadWithRequest:(NSURLRequest *)request navigationType:(UIWebViewNavigationType)navigationType; …and passing that info on to appropraite view controllers. When I cannot handle a URL I would like to push a new view controller on the stack and load the webpage into a UIWebView there. The TTWebController in Three20 looks very promising since it has also implemented a navigation toolbar, loading indicators etc. Somewhat naively perhaps I thought I would be able to use this controller to display web content in my app, without implementing Three20 throughout the app. I followed the instructions on github to add Three20 to my project and added the following code to deal with URLs in shouldStartLoadWithRequest: TTWebController* browser = [[TTWebController alloc]init]; [browser openURL:@"http://three20.info"]; //initially test with this URL [self.navigationController pushViewController:navigator animated:YES]; This crashes my app however with the following notice: *** -[TTNavigator setParentViewController:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3d5db70 What else do I need to do to implement the TTWebController in my app? Or do you know of an alternative view controller template that I can use instead of the Three20 implementation?

How to make a big switch control structure with variable check values?

For example, I have a huge switch control structure with a few hundred checks. They're an animation sequence, which is numbered from 0 to n. Someone said I can't use variables with switch. What I need is something like: NSInteger step = 0; NSInteger i = 0; switch (step) { case i++: // do stuff break; case i++: // do stuff break; case i++: // do stuff break; case i++: // do stuff break; } The point of this is, that the animation system calls a method with this big switch structure, giving it a step number. I want to be able to simply cut-copy-paste large blocks and put them in a different position inside the switch. for example, the first 50 blocks to the end. I could do that easily with a huge if-else structure, but it would look ugly and something tells me switch is much faster. How to?

Twig templates, inheritances and block usage

I've created three templates using Twig. The first one has block A defined in it, the second one extends from the first one, but includes a third template which sets the content of block A. When loading, through the browser, the url which renders b.html.twig, the content in block A (defined by the 3th template) is not positioned block _A is defined. How do I apply a "template" or "skeleton" of code in C# here?

BusinessClass is a typename that must be substituted, and PropertyName, PropertyId, ForeignKeyName, and m_LocallyCachedValue are all variables that should be substituted for. Are attributes usable here? Do I need reflection? How do I write the skeleton I provided in one place and then just write a line or two containing the substitution parameters and get the pattern to propagate itself? EDIT: Modified my misleading title -- I am hoping to find a solution that doesn't involve code generation or copy/paste techniques, and rather to be able to write the skeleton of the code once in a base class in some form and have it be "instantiated" into lots of subclasses as the accessor for various properties. Iphone - UIView not displayed

Hi, I have a strange problem with a UIView : I want to show an Activity Indicator View that I created with Interface Builder to indicate long running activity. In the viewDidLoad function of my principal viewController I init the ActivityIndicator View like this : - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; appDelegate = (MyAppDelegate *)[[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate]; load = [[ActivityIndicatorViewController alloc] init]; ... When I push a button it call this IBAction : - (IBAction)LaunchButtonPressed{ // Show the Activity indicator view. [self.view addSubview:load.view]; // eavy work [self StartWorking]; // Hide the loading view. [load.view removeFromSuperview]; } In the StartWorking function, I ask a request to an internet serveur and parse the XML file that it return me. The problem is that if I Call my StartWorking function, the application do not start by showing the Activity Indicator view but with the StartWorking function. Whereas if I remove the call to StartWorking function, the view is shown. Is someone able to explain me why? :s

jQuery UI Dialog and Textarea Focus Issue

I'm working on a modal comment system using jQuery and jQuery UI, but I'm having some issues with focus. I have a series of divs inside the modal to switch between Login and Add comment, as below: <div id="modal" title="Loading"> <div id="modalContent"></div> <div id="modalLogin"> <div class="loginBox"></div> <div class="addCommentBox"></div> <div class="commentReview"></div> </div> </div> Inside of the addCommentBox div, I've got the comment code: <form action="/comments/add" class="addCommentForm" name="addCommentForm" method="post"> <textarea name="content" class="addCommentContent"></textarea> <button value="Add Comment" type="submit" class="commentPost"/> <button value="Clear Comment" type="submit" id="clearComment"/> </form> The issue is that about half the time after opening the dialog the textarea inside the addCommentBox div doesn't react to keyboard inputs when selected. The mouse works correctly and will allow text to be selected, but keyboard control does nothing. I have no event listeners on the textarea. I've got some on the buttons, but they are targeting only the buttons. The only thing that happens in the HTML seems to be the fact that every time I click on the modal, the z-index increases for the overall modal div. I have set the addCommentBox div to have a z-index of 9999, greater than the z-index of the modal. Any suggestions or directions to research would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First tab doesnt show with Jquery UI Tabs using Cufon

I'm using Cufon to render the font for my Jquery Tabs. A strange problem I'm finding is that with the first tab, the text isn't rendered. If I remove Cufon, the text is there, or if I remove jquery tabs (so that its just html list items) the text is there (properly rendered by cufon). There seems to be timing issue with the loading I think, where cufon renders the text, but then the jquery tabs css is applied, and perhaps they are 'breaking' each other. Adding a minimum display time for Silverlight splash screen.

When hosting a silverlight application on a webpage it is possible to use the splashscreensource parameter to specify a simple Silverlight 1.0 (xaml+javascript) control to be displayed while the real xap file is downloaded, and which can receive notification of the downloads progress through onSourceDownloadProgressChanged. If the xap file is in cache, the splash screen is not shown (and if the download only takes 1 second, the splash screen will only be shown for 1 second). I know this is not best practice in general, but I am looking for a way to specify a minimum display time for the splash screen - even if the xap cached or the download is fast, the splash screen would remain up for at least, let's say, 5 seconds (for example to show a required legal disclaimer, corporate identity mark or other bug). I do want to do it in the splash screen exclusively (rather then in the main xap) as I want it to be clean and uninterupted (for example a sound bug) and shown to the user as soon as they open the page, rather then after the download (which could take anywhere from 1 to 20+ seconds). I'd prefer not to accomplish this with preloading - replacing the splash screen with a full Silverlight xap application (with it's own loading screen), which then programmably loads and displays the full xap after a minimum wait time.

How to lazy load scripts in YUI that accompany ajax html fragments

I have a web app with Tabs for Messages and Contacts (think gmail). Each Tab has a Y.on('click') event listener that retrieves an HTML fragment via Y.io() and renders the fragment via node.setContent(). However, the Contact Tab also requires contact.js to enable an Edit button in the fragment. How do I defer the cost of loading contact.js until the user clicks on the Contacts tab? How should contact.js add it's listener to the Edit button? The Complete function of my Tab's on('click') event could serialize Get.script('contact.js') after Y.io('fragment'). However, for better performance, I would prefer to download the script in parallel to downloading the HTML fragment. In that case, I would need to defer adding an event listener to the Edit button until the Edit button is available. This seems like a common RIA design pattern. What is the best way to implement this with YUI? How should I get the script? How should I defer sections of the script until elements in the fragment are available in the DOM?

Pointer problem in C for char*

Compiled Haskell libraries with FFI imports are invalid when imported into GHCI

I am using GHC 6.12.1, in Ubuntu 10.04 When I try to use the FFI syntax for static storage, only modules running in interpreted mode (ie GHCI) work properly. Compiled modules have invalid pointers, and do not work. I'd like to know whether anybody can reproduce the problem, whether this an error in my code or GHC, and (if the latter) whether it's a known issue. I'm using sys_siglist because it's present in a standard library on my system, but I don't believe the actual storage used matters (I discovered this while writing a binding to libidn). If it helps, sys_siglist is defined in <signal.h> as: extern __const char *__const sys_siglist[_NSIG]; I thought this type might be the problem, so I also tried wrapping it in a plain C procedure: #include<stdio.h> const char **test_ffi_import() { printf("C think sys_siglist = %X\n", sys_siglist); return sys_siglist; } However, importing that doesn't change the result, and the printf() call prints the same pointer value as show siglist_a. My suspicion is that it's something to do with static and dynamic library loading. proper use of volatile keyword

I think i have a pretty good idea about the volatile keyword in java, but i'm thinking about re-factoring some code and i thought it would be a good idea to use it. i have a class that is basically working as a DB Cache. it holds a bunch of objects that it has read from a database, serves requests for those objects, and then occasionally refreshes the database (based on a timeout). Heres the skeleton public class Cache { private HashMap mappings =....; private long last_update_time; private void loadMappingsFromDB() { //.... } private void checkLoad() { if(System.currentTimeMillis() - last_update_time > TIMEOUT) loadMappingsFromDB(); } public Data get(ID id) { checkLoad(); //.. look it up } } So the concern is that loadMappingsFromDB could be a high latency operation and thats not acceptable, So initially i thought that i could spin up a thread on cache startup and then just have it sleep and then update the cache in the background. But then i would need to synchronize my class (or the map). and then i would just be trading an occasional big pause for making every cache access slower. Then i thought why not use volatile i could define the map reference as volatile private volatile HashMap mappings =....; and then in get (or anywhere else that uses the mappings variable) i would just make a local copy of the reference: public Data get(ID id) { HashMap local = mappings; //.. look it up using local } and then the background thread would just load into a temp table and then swap the references in the class HashMap tmp; //load tmp from DB mappings = tmp;//swap variables forcing write barrier Does this approach make sense? and is it actually thread-safe?

Solver Foundation Optimization - 1D Bin Packing

I want to optimize loading marbles into trucks. I do not know, if I can use Solver Foundation class for that purpose. Before, I start writing code, I wanted to ask it here. 1- Marbles can be in any weight between 1 to 24 Tons. 2 - A truck can hold maximum of 24 Tons. 3- It can be loaded as many marble cubes, as it can take for upto 24 tones, which means there is no Volume limitation. 4- There can be between 200 up to 500 different marbles depending on time. GOAL - The goal is to load marbles in minimum truck shipment. How can I do that without writing a lot of if conditions and for loops? Can I use Microsoft Solver Foundation for that purpose? I read the documentation provided by Microsoft however, I could not find a scenario similar to mine. M1+ M2 + M3 + .... Mn <=24 this is for one truck shipment. Let say there are 200 different Marbles and Marble weights are Float. Thanks

DataGridView not displaying a row after it is created

Hi, I'm using Visual Studio 10 and I just created a Database using SQL Server CE. Within it, I made a table CSLDataTable and that automatically created a CSLDataSet & CSLDataTableTableAdapter. The three variables were automatically created in my MainWindow.cs class: cSLDataSet cSLDataTableTableAdapter cSLDataTableBindingSource I have added a DataGridView in my Form called dataGridView and datasource cSLDataTableBindingSource. I'm rather new to using SQL Server CE Database, and read a lot of the MSDN sites & thought I was on the right track, but I've had no luck. The DataGridView shows the headers correctly, but that new row does not show up.

image not displaying in midlet

Hello all,am new here. i have a slight problem; PLease look at the following code and tell me if am doing something wrong because the image is not displaying. i have made it really small so it should fit but its not displaying. i have images displaying in other screens but this main midlet would not. Is it possible to accept a button tag to be in some range iphone sdk

Hi all, In my application I'm doing dynamic resizing of cells and label in it depending upon the text in it. I'm adding button to cells in uitableview. I'm taking the label instance and button instance in a new label and button variable respectively and setting their frames to arrange them properly after resizing. if(cel==nil) { //some code original_label=[[UILabel alloc]init]; original_label.tag=111; //SOME MORE CODE GOES HERE original_button=[[UIButton alloc]init]; original_button.tag=222; //SOME MORE CODE GOES HERE } new_label=(UILabel *) [cell viewWithTag:111]; //This' how I'm taking the label instance on cell and below button instance on cell in new variables new_button = (UIButton * ) [cell viewWithTag:222]; Earlier I kept the tags of all the buttons on cells same, so it was easier to get button instances on cells properly and were being arranged properly. But now I want to recognize these buttons separately as I'm adding some functionality on button_click. I'm giving the buttons that are added to the cells incremental tags[1,2,3...9 and so on]. Now, how can I take these button tags in some range like[suppose 1-9]? Can anybody help? Thanks in advance.

ajax to php to curl and back..

I am trying to make an ajax call to a php script. The php script calls an rss feed using curl, gets the data, and returns the data to the funciton. I keep getting an error "Warning: Wrong parameter count for curl_error() in" .... Here is my php code:1 $ch = curl_init() or die(curl_error()); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $feed); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); $data1 = curl_exec($ch) or die(curl_error()); echo $data1; and the ajax call: $.ajax({ url: "getSingleFeed.php", type: "POST", data: "feedURL=" + window.feedURL, success: function(feed){ alert(feed); }}); I tested all the variables, they are being passed correctly, I can echo them out. But this line: $data1 = curl_exec($ch) or die(curl_error()); is what is giving me the error. I am doing the same thing with curl on other pages, just without ajax, and it is working fine. Is there anything special I need to do with ajax to do this?

Can PHP dissect its own syntax? For example, I'd like to write a function that takes in an input like $object->attribute and says to itself: OK, he's giving me $foo->bar, which means he must think that $foo is an object that has a property called bar. Before I try accessing bar and potentially get a 'Trying to get property of non-object' error, let me check whether $foo is even an object. The end goal is to echo a value if it is set, and fail silently if not. I want to avoid repetition like this: <input value="<? if(is_object($foo) && is_set($foo->bar)){ echo $foo->bar; }?> "/> ...and to avoid writing a function that does the above, but has to have the object and attribute passed in separately, like this: <input value="<? echoAttribute($foo,'bar') ?>" /> ...but to instead write something which: preserves the object-attribute syntax is flexible: can also handle array keys or regular variables Like this: <input value="<? echoIfSet($foo->bar); ?> /> <input value="<? echoIfSet($baz['buzz']); ?> /> <input value="<? echoIfSet($moo); ?> /> But this all depends on PHP being able to tell me "what kind of thing am I asking for when I say $object->attribute or $array[$key]", so that my function can handle each according to its own type. Is this possible?

Testing performance of queries in mysl

I am trying to setup a script that would test performance of queries on a development mysql server. Here are more details: I have root access I am the only user accessing the server Mostly interested in InnoDB performance The queries I am optimizing are mostly search queries (SELECT ... LIKE '%xy%') What I want to do is to create reliable testing environment for measuring the speed of a single query, free from dependencies on other variables. Till now I have been using SQL_NO_CACHE, but sometimes the results of such tests also show caching behaviour - taking much longer to execute on the first run and taking less time on subsequent runs. If someone can explain this behaviour in full detail I might stick to using SQL_NO_CACHE; I do believe that it might be due to file system cache and/or caching of indexes used to execute the query, as this post explains. It is not clear to me when Buffer Pool and Key Buffer get invalidated or how they might interfere with testing. So, short of restarting mysql server, how would you recommend to setup an environment that would be reliable in determining if one query performs better then the other?
