• iPhone SDK File Handler with iOS 4 Background Processes

  The "application:applicationDidFinishLaunchingWithOptions:" message does not get called when an application is sitting in the background in iOS 4, and I'm trying to figure out how to be notified when the application is brought back into the foreground by another application. My application registers itself as a handler for certain file types, and Safari and other supported applications allow passing the files over to my app. This works great if the app is closed before I try to use it, but fails otherwise. In my application:applicationDidFinishLaunchingWithOptions: I have: NSURL *url = (NSURL *)[launchOptions valueForKey:UIApplicationLaunchOptionsURLKey]; if([url isFileURL]) { } [self.window makeKeyAndVisible]; return YES; As stated already, this works great so far for starting the app when it's not sitting in the background - but when I switch back over to Safari or Mail and try to open a new file that is supported, my application wakes up from the background and becomes active again but I can't see any "withOptions" overrides for application:applicationWillEnterForeground: or any way to identify what was passed in when it enters the foreground. What would be the appropriate way to receive these "open file notifications" when the application is in the background?

• Shell Scripting: Generating output file name in script and then writing to it

  Hello, I have a shell script where a user passes different sizes as command line arguments. For each of those sizes, I want to perform some task, then save the output of that task into a .txt file with the size in the name. How can I take the command line passed and make that part of a stringname for the output file? I save the output file in a directory specified by another command line argument. Perhaps an example will clear it up. In the foor lop, the i value represents the command line argument I need to use, but $$i doesnt work. ./runMe arg1 arg2 outputDir [size1 size2 size3...] for ((i=4; i<$#; i++ )) do ping -s $$i google.com >> $outputDir/$$iresults.txt done I need to know how to build the $outputDir/$$iresults.txt string. Also, the ping -s $$i doesnt work. Its like I need two levels of replacement. I need to replace the $[$i] inner $i with the value in the loop, like 4 for ex, making it $4. Then replace $4 with the 4th command line argument! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  Hi, I am trying to use Python to read in an XML file containing some parameter names and values, e.g. ... <parameter name='par1'> <value>24</value> </parameter> <parameter name='par2'> <value>Blue/Red/Green</value> </parameter> ... and then pass it a dictionary with the parameter names {'par1':'53','par2':'Yellow/Pink/Black',...} and corresponding new values to replace the old ones in the XML file. The output should then overwrite the original XML file. At the moment I am converting the XML to a python dictionary and after some element comparison and regular expression handling, writing the output again in XML format. I am not too happy with this and was wondering whether anyone can recommend a more efficient way of doing it? Thanks.

• Get the package of a Java source file

  My goal is to find the package (as string) of a Java source file, given as plaintext and not already sorted in folders. I can't just locate the first instance of the keyword package in the file, because it may appear inside a comment. So I was thinking about two alternatives: Scan the file word-by-word, maintaining a "inside-a-comment" flag for the scanner. The first time the package keyword is encountered while not inside a comment, stop the scanning and report the result. Use a regex - should be theoretically possible because block comments do not next in Java, but I tried making such a regex and it turned out to be quite complicated - for me, at least. Another difference between the two approaches is that when scanning manually I can stop the scan when I can be certain the package keyword can no longer appear, saving some time... and I'm not sure I can do something similar with regexes. On the other hand, the decision "when it can no longer appear" is not necessarily simple, though I could use some heuristic for that. I would like to hear any input on this problem, and would welcome any help with the regex. My solution is written in Java as well.

• huge C file debugging problem

  Hello all. I have a source file in my project, which has more than 65,536 code lines (112,444 to be exact). I'm using an "sqlite amalgamation", which comes in a single huge source file. I'm using MSVC 2005. The problems arrives during debugging. Everything compiles and links ok. But then when I'm trying to step into a function with the debugger - it shows an incorrect code line. What's interesting is that the difference between the correct line number and the one the debugger shows is exactly 65536. This makes me suspect (almost be sure in) some unsigned short overflow. I also suspect that it's not a bug in the MSVC itself. Perhaps it's the limitation of the debug information format. That is, the debug information format used by MSVC stores the line numbers as 2-byte shorts. Is there anything can be done about this (apart from cutting the huge file into several smaller ones) ?

However, I'd like it so each file is deleted after 24 hours of being on my server. 24 hours for each file, not 24 hours for the entire directory. Here is my code so far...   I'm trying to figure out the best way to make a file folder system in sql. I'm making a website that will be using similar system as explorer in windows. You open your c: drive and you see there some folders and files, and you open one folder and you see more files and folders there. So what i'm asking, would i use one table for this and just point to the parent id number or what ? I have this in my head.. You make a Primary folder, it gets the u_id=1. Then i make a file in that folder, it gets u_id=2 and p_id=1 so i know its there right? same with the folders. This would all be in one table but i cant help thinking there is some major flaw in this..

• How do I convert a Linux disk image into a sparse file?

  I have a bunch of disk images, made with ddrescue, on an EXT partition, and I want to reduce their size without losing data, while still being mountable. How can I fill the empty space in the image's filesystem with zeros, and then convert the file into a sparse file so this empty space is not actually stored on disk? For example: > du -s --si --apparent-size Jimage.image 120G Jimage.image > du -s --si Jimage.image 121G Jimage.image This actually only has 50G of real data on it, though, so the second measurement should be much smaller. This supposedly will fill empty space with zeros: cat /dev/zero > zero.file rm zero.file But if sparse files are handled transparently, it might actually create a sparse file without writing anything to the virtual disk, ironically preventing me from turning the virtual disk image into a sparse file itself. :) Does it? Note: For some reason, sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=./zero.file works when cat does not on a mounted disk image.

  I'm wondering what personal information the file input (<input type="file">) element gives the website. I noticed that it does show the file name and the website does seem to have access to it. What about the file's path? If the file is located in My Documents, they could find out the user name via the path (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\Bob\My Documents) which many times is the actual user's name that is using the website. What information do most modern browsers allow the website to access when a user uses the file input element? Could JavaScript somehow be used to gain more information? What about when plugins (such as Flash or Java) implement file uploading?

• Create/rename a file/folder that begins with a dot in Windows?

  Many programs needs folder names that starts with a dot, like .emacs.d, .gimp-2.2, .jedit etc. How do I create such a folder? When using the Windows Explorer in Windows 2000 (and other versions), I get an error message saying "You have to enter a filename". The only solution I have come up with, is to open a command prompt (Start, Run, "CMD", OK) and enter "mkdir .mydir". Why have Microsoft this error message in the Explorer, but not in the command shell? Is there any registry hack out there to fix this, so that I am able to enter the folder name directly in the Explorer?

  I want to convert an .mp4 file to an .asf file, but I need to keep the size of the file below 150 mb (the server I need to upload the file to can only take files under 150 mb). Basically I want to recontain the .mp4 in an .asf file. The code I'm using currently is ffmpeg input.mp4 -c copy output.asf The command runs, however when I try to play the file on windows media player (I'm on windows xp) I get an error message saying "Windows media player has encountered a problem while playing the file." Anyone have any idea why this is happening? And what other ways I can accomplish this task?

  It's clear to me how deleting open files works on filesystems that use inodes - unlink() just decreases the link count to zero, and when the last file handle to the file is closed, the inode will be removed. But how does it work when using a file system that doesn't use inodes, like FAT32, with Linux? Some experiments suggest that deleting open files is still possible (unlike on Windows, where the unlink call wouldn't succeed), but what happens when the file system is uncleanly unmounted? How does Linux mark the files as unlinked, when the file system itself doesn't support such an operation? Is the directory entry just deleted, but retained in memory (that would guarantee deletion after unmounting in any case, but would leave the file system in an inconsistent state), or will the deletion only be marked in memory, and written at the time the last file handle is closed, avoiding possible corruption, but restoring the deleted files after an unclean unmount?

• How to export or view audio file references in a PDF?

  I have a an interactive PDF file that is over 90+ pages long. Each page is a map with city names that contains a Spanish pronunciation of that city in a .wav file. I'd say there are about 10-15 audio files for each map which comes out to 1000+ audio files. Is there a way to extract/export a list of the sound file names associated with each map? I tried to save the PDF to an HTML file, but it only exported images and text, and because the audio files were embedded in the PDF, the file names did not carry over to the HTML file. Any other ideas? I need to see what audio file goes with what map/page.

• Images missing after moving Django to new server

  I'm moving Django project to new server. I'm newbie in Django, and I don't know where should be upload folder. There are all images which should be displayed on website. In config file I haven't seen upload folder I could specify, so I'm guessing it always should be the same location for django projects or I just can't find it. Locations are saved in database. When I've put uploaded files into media folder, so url was like domain.co.uk/media/upload/media/images/year/month/day/image_name.ext and the same is on the old website, images on website ware still missing. All images are visible if I put url by hand, but django doesn't seems to see files. • JavaScript source file not loading in IE8 Popup

  I have an issue where the JavaScript source file is loading in popup for IE6, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera. But the same source file is not loading up in IE8. As a result of this the HTML is not being replaced in the Popup and I am getting an error in IE8 popup saying tinyMCE is not defined I have referred to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2949234/formatting-this-javascript-line and solved issue on all browsers except IE8.   Last year (2009), the Google Code Jam featured an interesting problem as the first problem in Round 1B: Decision Tree As the problem seemed tailored for Lisp-like languages, we spontaneously had an exciting codegolf here on SO, in which a few languages managed to solve the problem in fewer characters than any Lisp variety, using quite a number of different techniques. This year's Round 1B Problem A (File Fix-it) also seems tailored for a particular family of languages, Unix shell scripts. So continuing the "1B-A tradition" would be appropriate. :p But which language will end up with the shortest code? Let us codegolf and see! Problem description (adapted from official page): You are given T test cases. Each test case contains N lines that list the full path of all directories currently existing on your computer. For example: /home/awesome /home/awesome/wheeeeeee /home/awesome/wheeeeeee/codegolfrocks /home/thecakeisalie Next, you are given M lines that list the full path of directories you would like to create. They are in the same format as the previous examples. You can create a directory using the mkdir command, but you can only do so if the parent directory already exists. For example, to create the directories /pyonpyon/fumufumu/yeahyeah and /pyonpyon/fumufumu/yeahyeahyeah, you would need to use mkdir four times: mkdir /pyonpyon mkdir /pyonpyon/fumufumu mkdir /pyonpyon/fumufumu/yeahyeah mkdir /pyonpyon/fumufumu/yeahyeahyeah For each test case, return the number of times you have to call mkdir to create all the directories you would like to create.
