• Using XNA libraries in your Silverlight Windows Phone 7 applications

  I recently got an inquiry to my Microsoft Translator sample on if this would work with the Silverlight in the Windows Phone 7 SDK. I hadnt tried it before, so I created a sample Windows Phone 7 application and copied the code over. I used a basic UI to mock up the similarities: And then clicked the button. The text translated fine, but no audio. I didnt get any warnings that the WaveMSS code sample I was using wouldnt work. Then I remembered about XNA.   Recently I have been delivering Design and Planning Sessions at client sites, and as of recent SharePoint 2010 has been part of that mix. After the activity that goes on during those sessions getting towards the end of them is always a cross roads for clients.  Why?  Because it is time to kick the wheels.  Remind them, and remember, this is not a 1 or 4 weeks ordeal.  This has to be very well planned.   I recently bought Samsung Galaxy Note II on android 4.1. It was my idea to try to turn it into a pc and I bought a micro-keyboard for the same purpose. I had hoped there would be an app for OpenOffice, but there isn't. Now i see that ubuntu may be installed on smart phones. I already have ubuntu - including OpenOffice - on my laptop. My question is: is it possible to install ubuntu to galaxy note II, and if so, does it include office programs and other ubuntu programs? So aside from C# I want to learn a new language. Time is precious and I want to give my focus to a language which have a future. • Is programming or computer science in general, all about algorithms?

  As a grad student, I find it more and more common for prestigious companies (like Google, Facebook, Microsoft,...) to put algorithm questions in their test and interviews. A few startups I applied to also asked about algorithms. I wonder if algorithms fluency is the most important thing for software developer in those companies? If the answer being yes, what are the best method or resources for one to learn & practice about algorithms effectively? I can't seem to get interested in solving seemingly too complicated problems found in most textbook or websites. Though easily understand basic algorithms (like quicksort, bubblesort,...), I find it immensely difficult to remember and reuse them later. Thanks. P/S: If you ask me what I like, it's building good softwares to solve users' problems innovatively. I suppose that does not necessarily mean the software has to be very complicated.

  I remember Microsoft used to have this AI game for the .NET framework which allowed you to program a species and this species could be introduced to an "ecosystem" full of species that other people had programmed and they could interact with each other, etc. I can't remember what it was called, but I remembered thinking it was a pretty good idea. Are there any other similiar sites like that, which allows you to design some sort of AI engine and pit it against other programmer's creations? It could be an ecosystem type thing, or it could be a card or board game.

• Why does DirectX use a left-handed coordinate system?

  I considered posting on Stack Overflow, but the question strikes me as being far too subjective since I can't think of a reasonable technical explanation for Microsoft's choice in this matter. But this question has bugged me for so long and the issue keeps coming up in one of my projects, and I have never actually seen an attempt at explaining this: OpenGL uses a right-handed coordinate system, where the +Z part of the world coordinate system extends toward the viewer. DirectX uses a left-handed system where the +Z part of the world coordinate extends into the screen, away from the viewer. I never used the Glide API, so I don't know how it worked, but from what I can gather, it uses a left-handed system as well. Is there a technical reason for this? And if not, is there some conceptual advantage to a particular handedness of a coordinate system? Why would one choose one over the other?
