    I'm trying to connect an Ubuntu laptop (9.10) with some kind of Cisco VPN device; I don't know what's on the other end, and I'm not likely to find out exactly what. I know my company allows VPN from Linux clients because they provide one that I cannot get to install (it fails to compile). I've had the most luck with the network-manager-vpnc package, however I can't figure out what's failing. When I try to connect, I get this message from libnotify: The VPN connection 'XXX' failed. which is not very helpful. I have discovered that you can run the command wsusutil checkhealth to force the healt check to run, wsusutil can be found in C:\Program Files\Update Services\Tools. When this executese it will tell you to check the application log.

I am using icinga-web to monitor my hosts. For the moment, I have just my localhost, and all is perfect.   • Open ports broken from internal network

    Quick summary: Forwarded port works from the outside world, but from the internal network using the external IP the connection is refused. This is a simplified situation to make the explanation easier: I have a computer that is running a service on port 12345. This computer has an internal IP 192.168.1.100 and is connected directly to a modem/router which has internal IP 192.168.1.1 and external (public, static) IP 1.2.3.4. (The router is TP-LINK TD-w8960N) I have set up port forwarding (virtual server) at port 12345 to go to port 12345 at 192.168.1.100. If I run telnet 192.168.1.100 12345 from the same computer everything works. But running telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 says connection refused. If I do this on another computer (on the same internal network, connected to the router) the same thing happens. This would seem like the port forwarding is not working. However... If I run a online port checking service on my external IP and the service port it says the port is open and I can see the remote server connecting and immediately closing connection. And using another computer that is connected to the internet using a mobile connection I can also use telnet 1.2.3.4 12345 and I get a working connection. So the port forwarding seems to be working, however using external IP from the internal network doesn't. I have no idea what can be causing this, since another setup very much like this (different router) works for me. I can access a service running on a server from inside the network both through the internal and external IP. Note: I know I could just use the internal IP inside of the network to access this service. But if I have a laptop that must be able to do this both from inside and outside it would be annoying to constantly switch between 1.2.3.4 and 192.168.1.100 in the software configuration.   • Unusual Apache->Tomcat caching issue.

    Right now, I have an Apache setup sitting in front of Tomcat to handle caching. This setup has been given to an external service to manage, and since the transition, I've noticed odd behavior. Specifically, when I request a swf file from the web server, I hit the Apache cache (good), but occasionally I'll receive a truncated file. Once I receive this truncated file, the cache will NOT refresh until I manually delete the cache and let the swf pull down from tomcat again. The external service claims that the configuration is fine, but I don't see any way this could be happening aside from improper configuration. Now, there are two apache and two tomcat servers under a load balancer, and occasionally one apache cache will break while another does not (leading to 50% of all requests getting bad, truncated data). Where should I start looking to debug this issue? What could POSSIBLY be causing this odd behavior?   • "Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly" when trying to install MySQL on Win7 x64.

    Hi, I've run into a brick wall trying to install MySQL v5.5 on my machine. My PC is Windows 7 x64, Enterprise edition. MySQL installs fine, but when I run the "MySQL Instance Configuration Wizard", it pauses forever on the step "Start Service" (I can let it run for 30 minutes with no response). If I go into services, I see that the "MySQL" service hasn't started, and if I try to start it, it says "Windows could not start MySQL Service on Local Computer. Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly." I've tried the following: Turning off firewall. Uninstalling all antivirus software. Installing / reinstalling 32-bit version of MySQL. Installing / reinstalling 64-bit version of MySQL. Uninstalling, deleting the contents of "C:\program files\MySQL" and "C:\program files (x86)\MySQL", reinstalling. Checking to see that there is no rogue services named MySQL???? (from a previous install). Checking that port 3306 is not used by an alternate program. Changing the default port that MySQL uses. Checking for "my.ini" and "my.ini.cnf" in "C:\windows" (nothing there but that can cause a problem). Running both MySQL installer, and configuration wizard, in "Adminstrator mode". Turning off UAC. Installing with defaults, not changing anything. Rebooting my machine (about 6 reboots so far). Opening up port 3306 in the firewall (both TCP and UDP, inbound and outbound). Swearing at the klutz of a programmer who designed MySQL so you can't even install it (as if that would help!) My machine is working 100% in every other way. InfiniDB (a MySQL compatible database) installs 100%, as does Visual Studio 2010, Microsoft SQL Server, etc, etc. Your advice on how to work around this? p.s. Here is the screen it got stuck on for 15 minutes until I killed the process: Update 2010-12-20 Tried MySQL v5.1, it didn't work either. Its amazing - if you type "mysqld /?", or "mysqld -help", it doesn't give you any help. And, if you try to restart the service manually, it doesn't display any error messages. Could it be any more unhelpful? Update 2010-12-21 Installed MySQL 6.0 alpha, and it worked. However, I'd rather not use an alpha release, given that the "stable" release is anything but :( Update 2010-12-21 Found http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/windows-troubleshooting.html, dealing with troubleshooting under Windows.     My service for World Wide Web Publishing Service started successfully but whenever I browse to http://localhost/ I always get 502 Unknown host.   • Suggestions for splitting server roles amongst Hyper-V virtual servers / RAID6 or RAID10? / AppAssure

    We have 2 Hyper-V hosts at present running 1 virtual server that was converted from a physical box running all roles. My plan is to split the roles over various virtual machines, upgrading to the latest software versions as I go, and use the backup server as a standby in case the main server fails. AppAssure backup software has a feature called Virtual Standby, so the VHD's can be ready to be fired up on the backup server if necessary. Off-site backups will be done via external USB drive for now. I'm just seeking some input/suggestions into how I'm planning to split the roles out amongst various virtual servers. Also, I'm curious how to setup the storage on the servers. We do not have any NAS's, SAN'S or any budget for this. What would the best RAID level be to use? I'm thinking either RAID6 (which is currently used) however I'm concerned about the write speeds, or RAID10 but again I'm worried that I can only lose 1 drive (from the same mirror) as opposed to any 2 with RAID6. I realise I have a hot swap for this, but what if a further drive fails during a rebuild? Is the write penalty of RAID6 worth the extra reliability over RAID10? Or will it be too slow with all the roles I am planning, therefore RAID10 is my only real option? The reason for the needed redundancy is I am the only technician and I'm not always on-site. Options I've considered: 1) 5 drives in RAID6 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 1 drive for hot swap - this is how it is currently setup 2) 4 drives in RAID10 set, 200gb for host OS, rest for VM storage. 2 drives for hot swap 3) 4 drives in RAID10 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. No drives for hot swap - While this is probably the best option with the amount of drives I have, I don't like the idea of having no hot swap 4) 3 drives in RAID6 set for VM storage, 2 drives in RAID1 set for host OS. 1 drive for hot swap All options give us enough storage capacity for our files, etc. We don't have any budget for extra drives or extra hot swap HD chassis for the servers. We have about 70 clients and about 150 users.   • Recommendations or advice for shared computer control

    Basic scenario: we are a school (overwhelmingly Mac, some Windows machines via BootCamp), and we are considering using DeepFreeze to guard the state of our shared machines. We have roughly 250 machines that are either shared laptops (which move around quite a bit) or common desktops in public spaces. Obviously, we spend a lot of time maintaining the machines and trying to reverse the inevitable drift as people make changes to the computers. We would like to control the integrity of the build we initially put onto the machines without handcuffing users and especially without using Mac's Parental Control software. (We've had nothing but bad experiences with it.) We've been testing DeepFreeze, and so far it's very impressive. But I'm curious to hear if people who have used DeepFreeze or any similar software have any advice or tips. To get things started, I will post my own pros and cons. Pros: The state of the machine is frozen in our chosen state. All changes made to the machine after that disappear upon restart. (This frozen state really appears to cover everything. I have yet to do something to a test machine that isn't instantly healed.) Tons of trivial but time-consuming maintenance is gone in an instant. Also, lots of not-so-trivial breakage should be avoided. There are good options, however, that allow you to create storage spaces either globally or per user. (Otherwise, stored files disappear upon reboot. For some machines, this is a good option itself. Simply warn people: save externally or else; this machine is a kiosk, not your storage space.) Cons: Anytime we actually need to make a change (upgrade basic software, add a printer or an airport permanently, add new software), the process is a bit more complex. Reboot into a special mode (thaw state), make changes, reboot back into frozen mode. If (when?) we forget this, we will end up making changes that disappear after the next reboot. Users will forget to save files correctly (in the right place or externally), and we will have loud, unpleasant conversations explaining that we can't recover the document they worked on all afternoon yesterday. The machine rebooted. The file is gone. These are my initial thoughts, but I would love to hear from other people who have experience with DeepFreeze or any similar software. What should we be careful about? Do the pros outweigh the cons? What gains or problems am I not seeing? Thanks.

  • 2nd Year College - Learning - Microsoft Server Products

    As the title says, I just finished my first year of college (majoring in Software Engineering). Fortunately my school likes Microsoft enough, and I can get pretty much anything I want that Microsoft sells. I also can get IBM Websphere and the like for free as well. Earlier this year, I set up an oldish computer (2.6 Pentium D, x64) to run ubuntu server headless. I'm predominately a Java developer, so Apache, Maven, Nexus, Sonar, SVN, etc made it onto the machine. It worked really well for personal and school projects, especially team projects (quick ramp up). Anyways, I started to pick up C# to complement my Java knowledge (don't judge me :P), and am interested in working with some of the associated Microsoft equivalents. The machine currently has the Ubuntu install, as well as Windows 7 Ultimate. I do all of my actual development work off my laptop, also running Windows 7 Ultimate. I was wondering what software you would recommend putting on the machine. I’m not actually serving anything off the machine itself, but in Ubuntu I had it doing integration tests with Hudson on every commit, and profiling my applications, etc, etc. The machine would be running headless, and I would remote into it. Here is what I am currently leaning towards / wondering about: Windows 7 Ultimate vs Windows Server 2008 (R2) (no one is really clear why I should go with one over the other) Windows Team Foundation Sharepoint (Never used it before, kind of meh about it) IBM Websphere or Glassfish (Some Java EE web server) SQL Server 2008 A DVCS In order to better control product conflicts / limit resource use, I’m wondering if I should install things into virtual machines (I can get VmWare or Microsoft Virtualization Products) I also plan on installing everything I had running under Linux (it’s almost entirely Java based development software, so it’ll run on both, only reason I went with ubuntu during the year was because the apache build seemed better). I’m primarily looking to become familiar with enterprise software development tools, as well as get something functional that will help my development process. (IE, I’ll still use project and assign tasks even though I might be the only one to assign tasks to, just to practice doing so). Is there any other software / configuration details I should explore? Opinions on my current list? I primarily use C#, Java, and PHP. I'm familiar with ruby, and python as well. Thanks!

  • "log on as a batch job" user rights removed by what GPO?

    I am not much of a server administrator, but get my feet wet when I have to. Right now I'm running some COTS software on a Windows 2008 Server machine. The software installer creates a few user accounts for running its processes, and then gives those users the right to "log on as a batch job". Every so often (e.g. yesterday at 2:52pm and this morning at 7:50am), those rights disappear. The software then stops working. I can verify that the user rights are gone by using secedit /export /cfg e:\temp\uraExp.inf /areas USER_RIGHTS and I have a script that does this every 30 seconds and logs the results with a timestamp, so I know when the rights disappear. What I see from the export is that in the "good" state, i.e. after I install the software and it's working correctly, the line for SeBatchLogonRight from the secedit export includes the user accounts created by the software. But every few hours (sometimes more), those user accounts are removed from that line. The same thing can be seen by using the GUI tool Local Security Policy > Security Settings > Local Policies > User Rights Assignment > Log on as a batch job: in the "good" state, that policy includes the needed user accounts, and in the bad state, the policy does not. Based on the above-mentioned logging script and the timestamps at which the user rights are being removed, I can see clearly that some GPOs are causing the change. The GPO Operational log shows GPOs being processed at exactly the right times. E.g.: Starting Registry Extension Processing. List of applicable GPOs: (Changes were detected.) Local Group Policy I have run GPOs on demand using gpupdate /force, and was able to verify that this caused the User Rights to be removed. We have looked over local group policies till our eyes are crossed, trying to figure out which one might be stripping these User Rights to "log on as a batch job." We have not configured any local group policies on this machine, that we know of; so is there a default local group policy that might typically do such a thing? Are there typical domain policies that would do this? I have been working with our IT staff colleagues to troubleshoot the problem, but none of them are really GPO experts... They wear many hats, and they do what they need to do in order to keep most things running. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Unknown problem causing major computer failure, Booting problem with windows 7, mainly with 0x0000000A

    Where do I begin? OS=Windows 7 I think it all started when I ran an installation file. I suspect it may have been a virus (even though AVG scan didnt pick anything up). The installation failed, computer crashed then restarted. In the middle of the reboot, I get BSOD. Normal boot up doesnt work so I use safe mode. Method 1: Not a problem I thought cos I will do what I normally do and that was to recover from my image file. Unfortunately, my Acronis software cant recover in safe mode. Method 2: I created a bootable disc for the Acronis recovery software. Managed to boot to Acronis and started the recovery from image file. This fail with some error message (did not manage to record). Something to do with not be able to copy to $AVG folder. Method 3: At this stage, assumed it was still a virus causing the problem so decided to format that partition to remove everything and hopefully the virus too. Had a lot of problems trying to bypass the system to allow me to format but (i think- more on this later) I managed to do that. Image was recovered, thought problem was resolved. Tried to boot windows but new error: Boot Manager is missing. Read up on this and managed to copy the Boot Manager from my Laptop's Manufacturer's partition (partition contains factory setup image file). Windows loaded but new BSOD with 0x000000A problem. Method 4: Attempted to reinstall factory settings but this failed cos i suspect by formating the partition, I may have removed the recovery software. Tried to create a bootable dvd of factory setting but machine is so bad it continues to crash. Bootable dvd method failed. Method 5:Spent alot of time reading up on this error, even installed a software to help scan and fix the problem. Scan failed and software required money! Anyway, lots of BSOD with different error message like 0x00000001A and 0x0000000D1. Error message changes with some reboots. Method 6: Found a hotfix from the windows site to fix 0x0000000A problem, great I thought! In safe mode, I cant install the file cos of error:0x8007043c. Tried to then install the fix in normal mode but installation just hangs. Returned to safe mode and followed advice to bypass 0x8007043c by changing the BITS status (read here: http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windowsupdate/181931-error-number-0x8007043c-windows-update.html). However, my machine at this time is so flaky that it hangs everytime i right mouse click the computer icon. I am at my wits end. Ya help or ideas? Cheers

  • Network Services disabled (not starting) on Windows XP

    I am currently running Windows XP Service Pack 3 on my system. But today, when I failed to connect to the internet, via a LAN cable, I realized that almost all of the vital network services had stopped functioning. Any attempts to start it through services.msc gives me the following message: Could not start the DNS Client Service on Local Computer Error 1068: The dependency service group failed to start All my software or services that are related to networking have stopped functioning, for example, Windows Firewall is turned off permanently, so is my Avast Anti-Virus' service of Real Time Shields and Web Shield. When I insert the LAN wire into my laptop, it registers itself, but this is what I get when I do a ping localhost C:>ping localhost Unable to contact IP driver, error code 2 Moveover, with ipconfig I get this : Windows IP Configuration An internal error occurred: The request is not supported. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help. Additional Information: Unable to query host name On some further poking around, I saw that none of the "NETWORK SERVICE" process in task manager, except svchost.exe were running. Also, when I first opened the task manager, I saw some 20 processes running with username column empty for most of them. With some search in Google, I found out that these services were important, DHCP DNS Net logon Network connection Network location Awareness TCP/IP Net BIOS Helper none of them, except Network Connections are working, they do not start. The event viewer of my system shows a bunch of 7000 and 7001 event errors. I have tried re installing the network driver, booting in safe mode with networking and tried to enable those services mentioned above. I had disabled System Restore some time back, so I have no restore points for my system. I tried a lot of things from Google searches but none of them worked. Also, with such a long list of issue, I am a little confused as to what should I search on the internet. :( One more thing I would like to mention, previous morning, my anti-virus Avast detected a RootKit buried deep in my system folders. It was removed, but maybe this was a problem caused by the root kit. I did run a boot-time scan but no viruses were found. Please please please advice. Is formatting and re-installation of Windows my only option?
