• Printing JTables without formatting of the original component

  I'm writing an application which utilises tables which can be printed if the user so desires and I wish to print a JTable filled with data, except I haven't been able to find an option to remove the formatting; the printed tables looks like it does in the GUI (based on the system theme) which is making the table less readable and using excess ink. I wish to print the same data with clear formatting. Is there a way to do this straight from a JTable or is my best option simply to print to a file and have the use printer from there. Currently it functions through a viewer which gives the user some options for printing, and then it goes to the system's printer.

  Hi, I noticed a number of cases where an application or database stored collections of files/blobs using a has to determine the path and filename. I believe the intended outcome is a situation where the path never gets too deep, or the folders ever get too full - too many files (or folders) in a folder making for slower access. EDIT: Examples are often Digital libraries or repositories, though the simplest example I can think of (that can be installed in about 30s) is the Zotero document/citation database. Why do this? EDIT: thanks Mat for the answer - does this technique of using a hash to create a file path have a name? Is it a pattern? • Copy 2 databases without detach in SQL 2005

  Hello I have a server with live databases, and I have a test-server where I sometimes restore databases from the live one, to get fresh data. But this way I have to set up all the users again, I have about 4 different users with different permissions that need set again. Is there some way to do this a better way without using detach and attach, since I cant take the databases offline on the live-server? Prefered some thing I could run that "re-fills" the tables with fresh data. No need to redo stored procedures and rights. /M

• Safely convert UTC datetimes to local time (based on TZ) for calculations?

  Following from my last question which @Jon Skeet gave me a lot of help with (thanks again!) I am now wondering how I can safely work with date/times, stored as UTC, when they are converted back to Local Date/Time. As Jon indicated in my last question using DateTimeOffset represents an instant in time and there is no way to predict what the local time would be say a minute later. I need to be able to do calculations based on these date/times. So how can I assure when I pull the dates from the database, convert them to local date/time and do specific calculations on them they are going to be accurate?

I don't find the syntax which will allow me to pass the array of arrays to the second function... Could you please help?   I have dates stored in an MS-Access table in the 'General Date' format. I'm trying to create a query that returns records between a specific date range (all records from March 2010) however I encounter a 'data type mismatch in critera expression' message. • Can you update a file in the application bundle?

  Is it possible to update a file stored in an applications bundle programmatically? Basically I want to get a remote file and overwrite one of the bundle files with it (a sqlite database in fact). This works fine on the simulator but on the device it does not work, though it does not error either (it just doesn't seem to actually overwrite). I know I can work around it by copying it do the user folder instead and then getting the code to check their first for the file before using the bundle one but I was interested to know whether it is possible to update a bundle file at all or am I just doing something wrong?   i have a web application which stores users file in directory which is under webroot directory.. Suppose web application is under 'fileupload' and all files are getting stored in 'xyz' folder under 'fileupload' so now if user points to url say like www.xyzpqr.com/fileupload/xyz/abc.doc, he gets that file. How do i restirct this from happening.. i have thought of putting xyz folder in WeB-inf folder but as my application is very big i have to made changes at too many places.. so is there any way so that without moving the folder to web-inf (restricted folders) i can achieve wat i want..

• Methods of pulling data from a database

  I'm getting ready to start a C# web application project and just wanted some opinions regarding pulling data from a database. As far as I can tell, I can either use C# code to access the database from the code behind (i.e. LINQ) of my web app or I can call a stored procedure that will collect all the data and then read it with a few lines of code in my code behind. I'm curious to know which of these two approaches, or any other approach, would be the most efficient, elegant, future proof and easiest to test.

  Hello, So i need to create a tree with tree items for my gwt project. i am using the composite pattern to store all the information i need to be placed within a tree. A User has a root Folder that extends Hierarchy, this root Folder then has a list of Hierarchy objects, that can be FileLocations or Folders. Trouble i am having is building my tree based on this pattern. this data is all stored using hibernate in a mysql database How would i be able to implement this as a tree in gwt. Also the tree item that i create would have to reference back to the object so i can rename or move it.

  I am trying to create a table in my MS SQL database for Languages. I want to store an English name of Language and a local name of language in the database. i.e. Language, Language(local) English, English German, Deutsch Italian, Italiano Japanese, ??? ... ... I have 279 languages that I want to import, but when I import it shows '?????' for some like japanese, Russian and arabic etc The database Collation is Latin1_General_CI_AS. I would also like advise on multilingual websites; if i have a database of product descriptions and I want to have translation in multiple languages, should I go for separate databases or Can I have translation in one databse? (I prefer not to duplicate data!). Anything else to make sure users are able to write comments in different languages (char encoding on web?) and can be stored in database.

• How to debug macruby?

  Hi, I've encountered an inconsistent bug with MacRuby and have no idea how to go about debugging this. If anyone could help would be great. I don't know if this is due to my own code or is it a bug in the MacRuby framework. I have a feeling it's my own code, something about over-retaining a piece of memory and hence the garbage collection failed. This is the error from Xcode. Thanks. • How do you use Exslt.dyn (especially the 'evaluate' method) in Umbraco?

  I am trying to execute the string contained in an XSL variable. Umbraco has hooks for several Exslt pieces, but it seems the Exslt.dyn (Exslt.dynamic) is not one of them. How do you add it in? Acceptable methods (in order of preference: Writing your own XSLT extension (possibly using existing Umbraco code for Exslt Dynamic). Uploading the XSL from http://www.exslt.org/dyn/functions/evaluate/index.html into Umbraco. Modifying the Umbraco source to add it (possibly using existing Umbraco code for Exslt Dynamic). The reason I mention Exslt Dyanmic is because some Umbraco XSLT sources show a reference that I am assuming existing in some versions of Umbraco. I cannot find it in the source code, however. How do I apply the same to dynamically loaded elements as well? I am using Prototype Library. (I have used JQuery's Live function which keeps track of all future elements, but need to achieve something similar using Prototype) Thanks.

  I am rebuilding an ecom site where the product data is stored in a multidimensional JS array that gets loaded on page load. This data is constantly being accessed with JS due to the nature of the site, to update prices based on user selections. There are many options that affect final price. From a programming standpoint, a DB table is much easier to maintain and update than are JS arrays, and since I am porting the site over to PHP and MYSQL, I have been considering moving these arrays into tables. So, would it be better to populate an array from the DB on load so that the pricing data is always available to the JS, or stay with hard coded JS files? I considered getting data via ajax as needed, but since this site has to constantly update pricing with user interaction, I have pretty much ruled that out. How would you handle it?

  I'm having a tough time figuring out how to instantiate a 2D array of pointer objects. Here is how I'm doing it: Pieces* chessBoard[9][9]; When I want to set it to an actual object pointer, I'm doing the following: chessBoard[1][1] = new Rook(p1Rook); Rook is a class that inherits attributes from the Pieces class and p1Rook is a char variable set to 'R'. This class also implements virtual functions (not pure virtual) from Pieces such as move() or getPiece() that are unique to the particular chess piece. However, when I compile my program, I get the following error: ChessBoard.cpp:69: error: expected type-specifier before ‘Rook’ ChessBoard.cpp:69: error: cannot convert ‘int*’ to ‘Pieces*’ in assignment Can someone please explain what I should change to get rid of this rather annoying persistent error? I would appreciate it.

• In SQL Server merge replication, how does reinitializing work?

  I have set up a pull subscription to a merge publication in SQL Server. I use parameterized row filters on some tables. This works fine with the initial synchronization - just the rows using the filter arrive in the replicated (client) database. However, at some later point I'd like to be able to synchronize the replicated database again from the server and have new rows that match the parameterized row filters appear on the client database. The doucmentation seems to indicate that I can call Reinitialize() to do this. However, when I do try this and Synchronize again, I get an error saying that the script 'snapshot.pre' cannot be applied to the database. I've inspected the script and can see why - it's trying to drop some functions are used by the tables in the database. It would appear that for Reinitialize() to work it requires that the database be blank. Am I misunderstanding something here? Is there a way to make this work?

  This is a trick question, while developing a php+ajax application i felt into some long queries, nothing wrong with them, but they could be done in background. I know that there's a way to just send a reply to user while throwing the real processing to another process by exec(), however it dosen't feels right for me, this might generate exploits and it's not pratical on making it compatible with virtual servers and cross platform. PHP offers the ob_* functions although they help on flushing the cache, but the user will keep connected until the script is running. I'm wondering if there's an alternate to exec to keep a script running after sending data to user and closing connection/thread with apache, or a less "dirty" way to have processing data sent to another script.
