• Editing a .class file directly, playing around with opcodes

  Hi, today I just tried to play a little bit around with the opcodes in compiled java class file. There's only one section in the resulting class file, which contains 0x84: [..] 8401 0184 0101 8401 01[..] So I would translate this as: iinc 1,1 iinc 1,1 iinc 1,1 corresponding to my i++; i++; i++; I then tried to append just 840101 to increment the variable once more, but that didn't work and resulted in the ClassFormatError. Is there anything like a checksum for the class file? I looked up the format of a classfile in http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jvms/second_edition/html/ClassFile.doc.html but could not find anything which points out to some kind of bytes_of_classfile or something. I also don't understand why the error is "Truncated Class File", because I did append something :-) I know its not a good idea to edit class files directly, but I'm just interested on the VM internals here.

  Hello, Im now developping one application in C# with Remoting objects and NHibernate. So here is a image explaining how my projects are divided. Views Layer This layer will be responsible for the users interface. This layer will always use the Controls Layer to create and edit objects; Control Layer This is my persistence layer, here Ill have all the NHibernate configuration. This is my critic point, because ListSingleton Project will have only my RemoteObject. (Here I have the App.config file) Models Layer Entity layer. Here I only have the entities classes and their respective mapping. I’ve done a test solution with no remoting and only with the projects of the Control and Model Layers. It was all working ok. • help on ejb stateless datagram and message driven beans

• Configuring mod_rewrite and mod_jk for Apache 2.2 and JBoss 4.2.3

  Hello! My problem is as follows: I have JBoss 4.2.3 application server with AJP 1.3 connector running on one host under Windows (192.168.1.2 for my test environment) and Apache 2.2.14 running on another FreeBSD box (192.168.1.10). Apache acts as a "front gate" for all requests and sends them to JBoss via mod_jk. Everything was working fine until I had to do some SEO optimizations. These optimizations include SEF urls, so i decided to use mod_rewrite for Apache to alter requests before they are sent to JBoss. Basically, I nedd to implement 2 rules: Redirect old rules like "http://hostname/directory/" to "http://hostname/" with permanent redirect Forward urls like "http://hostname/wtf/123/" to "http://hostname/wtf/view.htm?id=123" so that end user doesn't see the "ugly" URL (the actual rewrite). Here is my Apache config for test virtual host: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot "/usr/local/www/dummy" ServerName 192.168.1.10 <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteRule /directory/(.*) /$1 [R=permanent,L] RewriteRule ^/([^/]+)/([0-9]+)/?$ /$1/view.htm?id=$2 </IfModule> JkMount /* jsp-hostname ErrorLog "/var/log/dummy-host.example.com-error_log" CustomLog "/var/log/dummy-host.example.com-access_log" common </VirtualHost> The problem is that second rewrite rule doesn't work. Requests slip through to JBoss unchanged, so I get Tomcat 404 error. But if I add redirect flag to the second rule like RewriteRule ^/([^/]+)/([0-9]+)/?$ /$1/view.htm?id=$2 [R,L] it works like a charm. But redirect is not what I need here :) . I suspect that the problem is that requests are forwarded to the another host (192.168.1.2), but I really don't have any idea on how to make it work. Any help would be appreciated :)

• PNG Transparency Problems in IE8

  I'm having problems with a transparent PNG image showing black dithered pixel artifacts around the edge of the non transparent part of the image. It only does this in Internet Explorer and it only does it from a Javascript file it is used in. Here's what I'm talking about... http://70.86.157.71/test/test3.htm (link now dead) ...notice the girl in the bottom right corner. She has artifacts around her in IE8 (I haven't tested it in previous versions of IE, but I'm assuming it probably does the same). It works perfectly in Firefox and Chrome. The image is loaded from a Javascript file to produce the mouseover effect. If you load the image all by itself, it works fine. Here's the image... http://70.86.157.71/test/consultant2.png Does anyone know how to fix this? The image was produced in Photoshop CS3. I've read things about removing the Gama, but that apparently was in previous versions of Photoshop and when I load it in TweakPNG, it doesn't have Gama. Please help!

• Object suddenly missing from HttpServletRequest

  I print a list directly in the servlet using the print writer and the list prints. When I try to put in the jsp however the list doesn't print whether I use JSTL or scriptlets. I tried to test in JSTL and scriptlet if the object is null and turns out that it is! Why does this happen and how can I fix this? • D-Link DNS-323 NAS firmware update

  Hi all, I've got a D-Link DNS-323 NAS enclosure holding a bunch of multimedia files that I've (possibly stupidly) just updated the firmware on, from 1.03 to 1.08. The updater indicated it applied the firmware patch successfully, but after rebooting it I can no longer get into it via the web interface, either via the static IP I had assigned it before the update, or by any of the DHCP-assigned addresses that I can see are currently assigned by my router. The unit just sits there, with the drives (2x512 set up as RAID-1) thrashing away seemingly forever... So, my question - has anyone had a similar experience with one of these units? Any advice etc? I've googled the hell out of it, and can't find anything useful.

• Systemctl hangs trying to start MySQL on Fedora

  When I try to start Mysql on Fedora via systemctl start mysqld.service, it hangs indefinitely and never starts. Running mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables & or mysqld_safe --nowatch --basedir=/usr starts the server just fine, indicating the database is still there, but using service or systemctl doesn't work at all. Nothing is shown in /var/log/mysqld.log. However, `/var/log/messages shows thousands of messages like: Oct 29 15:55:52 myserver systemd[1]: mysqld.service holdoff time over, scheduling restart. Oct 29 15:55:52 myserver systemd[1]: Job pending for unit, delaying automatic restart. How do I diagnose what's wrong and get MySQL to start?

• IE7 is clipping my text. How do I adjust its attitude?

  Hi All, A few days ago I re-skinned my website, http://emle.nl. Development of this skin was primarily done using safari, and as expected, it all renders fine using firefox and opera. I've had to make a few small tweaks for IE7, but nothing much, except for one problem... The date indicators for a post are cut off in IE. This problem seems to occur only on nested span tags inside a left floating div. I think I need the floating div's in order to layout text on the left and the right side of the screen. Anyhow, I've summarized it into a small test case, located at http://emle.nl/test.html. In the different browsers, it looks like this. Of course safari and firefox get this right: Do any of you know how to stop IE7 from clipping my text? Edit: I have sort of given up on this problem. My scripts now check for IE7 and feed it somewhat simplified HTML that its limited engine can handle. It works in IE8, so, for now, just the special case for IE7 will have to do...

• Opening a Unicode file with Perl

  I'm using osql to run several sql scripts against a database and then I need to look at the results file to check if any errors occurred. The problem is that perl doesn't seem to like the fact that the results files are unicode. I wrote a little test script to test it and the output comes out all warbled. $file = shift; open OUTPUT, $file or die "Can't open $file: $!\n"; while (<OUTPUT>) { print $_; if (/Invalid|invalid|Cannot|cannot/) { push(@invalids, $file); print "invalid file - $inputfile - schedule for retry\n"; last; } } Any ideas? I've tried decoding using decode_utf8 but it makes no difference. I've also tried to set the encoding when opening the file. I think the problem might be that osql puts the result file in UTF-16 format, but I'm not sure. When I open the file in textpad it just tells me 'Unicode'. Edit: Using perl v5.8.8

• Why can't I wrap the ServletRequest when trying to capture JSP Output

  I am trying to dispatch in a servlet request handler to the JSP processor and capture the content of it. I am providing wrapper instances for the ServletRequest and ServletResponse, they implement the corresponding HTTPServletRequest/-Response interfaces, so they should be drop-in replacements. All methods are currently passed to the original Servlet Request object (I am planning to modify some of them soon). Additionally I have introduced some new methods. (If you want to see the code: http://code.google.com/p/gloudy/source/browse/trunk/gloudyPortal/src/java/org/gloudy/gloudlet/impl/RenderResponseImpl.java) The HttpServletResponse uses it's own output streams to capture the output. When I try to call request.getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/views/test.jsp").include(request, response); With my request and response wrappers the method returns and no content has been captured. When I tried to pass the original request object it worked! But that's not what I need in the long run... request.getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/views/test.jsp").include(request.getServletRequest(), response); This works. getservletRequest() returns the original Request, given by the servlet container. Does anyone know why this is not working with my wrappers?

  Hello, I'm not sure how to explain this without writing several pages so I hope the actual code is more expressive. I've made a jar containing multiple annotation declaration similar to the following: @Target(ElementType.PACKAGE) @Retention(RetentionPolicy.RUNTIME) public @interface MarkedPackage { } then I have made a test jar containing several classes in several packages and marked just one package with the above annotation (with package-info.java) like below: @myPackage.MarkedPackage package package.test.jar; this jar had in its build path the jar containing the annotations. then I made a static class that has a method (LoadPlugins) that retrieves a list with all the jars of a directory. Then it searches through the jars for the 'package-info' class and checks if that classes package contains the MarkedPackage annotation. by calling this: if (checkPackageAnnotation(thisClass.getPackage())) where thisClass is the package-info class retrieved via a classloader. and: public static boolean checkPackageAnnotation(AnnotatedElement elem) { System.out.println(elem.getAnnotations().length); if (elem == null || !elem.isAnnotationPresent(MarkedPackage.class)) return false; return true; } the elem.getAnnotatios().length is there for debug purposes. And the problem appears when I call the method from the static class: if I call it from a main function: public class MyMain { public static void main(String[] args){ PluginUtils.LoadPlugins(); } } everything works perfectly it displays '1' from that System.out.println(elem.getAnnotations().length); But if I call it from a button from my Vaadin project: header.addComponent(new Button("CallThat", new Button.ClickListener() { public void buttonClick(ClickEvent event) { PluginUtils.LoadPlugins(); } })); It displays '0' from that System.out.println(elem.getAnnotations().length); Also I should mention that I created the main inside my Vaadin project so it would have the exact same build path and resources. • jQuery crashing Internet Explorer

  Hello. Okay basically, I'm designing and developing a fairly complicated website which revolves around the use of jQuery.. My knowlege of jQuery is really poor and this is the first time I've properly used it. I posted a question here before about the script and apparently its awful, but I didn't show you exactly what I was actually writing it for, which I can now.. Because I've uploaded it onto a test directory. It now works fine in every browser other than IE. The CSS styling is getting there and it should be close to finish soon! However, Internet Explorer is showing bad problems.. In IE 7,8 it looks fine but when you go to hover over a link, it immediately crashes. IE 6, the display doesn't seem to be working properly at all. But IE 6 is a lesser problem. If you could take just 5 or 10 minutes to potentially rewrite a simple script which would potentially take me 10 hours, I would be so so grateful! • How does loop address alignment affect the speed on Intel x86_64?

  I'm seeing 15% performance degradation of the same C++ code compiled to exactly same machine instructions but located on differently aligned addresses. When my tiny main loop starts at 0x415220 it's faster then when it is at 0x415250. I'm running this on Intel Core2 Duo. I use gcc 4.4.5 on x86_64 Ubuntu. Can anybody explain the cause of slowdown and how I can force gcc to optimally align the loop?   This question is related to sending an SMS from a link in a WAP page? Historically I have used sms: which has worked on SonyEricsson, Nokia and other such 'legacy' devices. An example of the mark-up would be; <a href="sms:0123456789?body=test%20message">send</a> I am aware that i-phone does not allow you to specify the body. If the body tag is present then the device closes the browser and opens the SMS application but does not go as far as taking the user to message creation. As such the following does not really work; <a href="sms:0123456789?body=test%20message">send</a> however, this partially does... in that it takes the user to the editor and selects the recipient. <a href="sms:0123456789">send</a> My tests with Android (HTC desire) cause the message editor to crash (with the above examples). I have managed to get the message editor to open successfully but not managed to pass any details (recipient or message body) using; <a href="sms://0123456789">send</a> Note the :// which is not correct according to the Nokia specs. Has anyone had any more success? Sorry if this is a bit hazy, its probably more of a discussion than a question.

• Is it possible to do A/B testing by page rather than by individual?

  Lets say I have a simple ecommerce site that sells 100 different t-shirt designs. I want to do some a/b testing to optimise my sales. Let's say I want to test two different "buy" buttons. Normally, I would use AB testing to randomly assign each visitor to see button A or button B (and try to ensure that that the user experience is consistent by storing that assignment in session, cookies etc). Would it be possible to take a different approach and instead, randomly assign each of my 100 designs to use button A or B, and measure the conversion rate as (number of sales of design n) / (pageviews of design n) This approach would seem to have some advantages; I would not have to worry about keeping the user experience consistent - a given page (e.g. www.example.com/viewdesign?id=6) would always return the same html. If I were to test different prices, it would be far less distressing to the user to see different prices for different designs than different prices for the same design on different computers. I also wonder whether it might be better for SEO - my suspicion is that Google would "prefer" that it always sees the same html when crawling a page. Obviously this approach would only be suitable for a limited number of sites; I was just wondering if anyone has tried it?

  Is there a way to create a local branch, or modify an existing local branch, in such a way that it cannot be dcommit'ed to the svn repo? Here's a description of the scenario. git checkout -b local.farBranch remotes/farBranch git checkout -b patched.local.farBranch git merge local.patches <work on patched branch && test> <do not commit onto patched.local.farBranch> git checkout local.farBranch git commit -am "some changes" git rebase local.farBranch patched.local.farBranch <another work test cycle> git checkout local.farBranch git commit -am "last changes" git svn dcommit Now, I never want to dcommit patched.local.farBranch (which is tracking remotes/farBranch) because that would put my local patches into the SVN repository. This is not a fatal problem but it is a pain in the keester because the patch has to be removed when the SVN farBranch is eventally (SVN) merged onto the trunk. • automating hudson builds with ant throwing 403

  We have a hudson server which deploys builds. We have a few services which we want to be able to remotely tell hudson to deploy a certain build ... these services are using ant. So I'm trying to get it working but keeping getting a 403 response when giving a build number like so... <ac:post to="http://hostname:8080/hudson/job/test_release_indexes/build?" verbose="true" wantresponse="true"> <prop name="token" value="indexes"/> <prop name="BUILDNUMBER" value="0354"/> </ac:post> this throws the 403. I've also tried passing it props for the username and password like so ... <ac:post to="http://srulesre2:8080/hudson/job/test_dartmouth_indexes/build?" verbose="true" wantresponse="true"> <prop name="token" value="indexes"/> <prop name="BUILDNUMBER" value="0354"/> <prop name="username" value="test"/> <prop name="password" value="test"/> </ac:post> I've tried a hundred different variations on username and password ... like j_username and j_password or user and pass ... but nothing is working ... keep getting the same 403. And the username and password are valid because I can manually log in with admin privileges. Any ideas would be great
