  • Vagrant up doesn't load chef configs and doesn't keep an error log

    I'm trying to set up a vagrant box and I'm running with all sort of troubles. Right now I'm getting a strange error message where it states there's a stack trace file with more info, but that file is no where to be found.   • How to set up mysql storage for certain rsyslog input matches?

    I'm draining various logs from Heroku to an rsyslog linux (ubuntu) server and am starting to have a little more to bite off than I can chew in terms of working with my log histories. I am needing to be able drill back in time based on more flexible details and more flexible access than what the standard syslog file(s) provide. I'm thinking that logging to mysql may be the correct approach, but how do I set this up such that it pulls only certain log entries into a table based on an identified? For example, I see a long hex string identifying each log entry from a certain Heroku app instance. I assume that I can just pipe those into the mysql socket vs ALL rsyslog input into mysql... Could someone please direct me to a resource that can walk me through the process of setting something like this up or simply provide some details that can help? I have 15+ years of Unix experience so I just need some nudging in the right direction as I've not really done a tremendous amount of work with syslog daemons previously in terms of pooling various servers into one. Additionally, I'd be interested in any log review tools that could make drilling through log arrangements like this more handy for developers.

  • Unable to install Xdebug

    I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up?   • Where in the user profile are the Firefox search engine choices stored?

    We have a large number of user profiles that were created on Ubuntu 10.04 and they had access to Google as a choice in the search bar and Google was the provider for queries typed into the super bar. When logging into these same profiles from Mint 15 client machines, the Google search option does not exist for these users, as is the default for Mint. This setting seems to be user specific, but not a part of the FireFox profile? It seems if it were a part of the FF profile, it would "just work" on Mint for these profiles, so I suspect the configuration may be stored somewhere else in the user's profile? Could someone please tell me where in a user's profile the search engine options are set? We would like to set this once, and then drop this configuration into everyones profile so all of our users don't have to do this manually.

    I have installed perl and pm_dbdmysql perl module on solaris-10. I have a perl script which makes the mysql DB connection to a diff server and runs some queries and returns the results. Its working fine on linux(redhat) but when I am running the script on solaris-10 its giving me the below error: 2010-12-14 00:00:00 and 2010-12-14 23:59:59DAILY INSIDE : 2010-12-14 00:00:00 -- 2010-12-14 23:59:59 install_driver(mysql) failed: Can't locate DBD/mysql.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.10.1/i86pc-solaris /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.10.1 /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.10.1/i86pc-solaris /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.10.1 .) at (eval 15) line 3. Perhaps the DBD::mysql perl module hasn't been fully installed, or perhaps the capitalisation of 'mysql' isn't right. Well from the table above, seem like it only allow localhost to connect to this db. Keep in mind that both my db and my GF are on the same VPS. Please help

    I have an external Lacie hard drive connected via USB to my Macbook Pro which is running Snow Leopard. I have nothing but music on the external drive with every album sorted in it's own individual folder and have changed all of the individual folder icons to display the album art of the songs from the album inside. I want to reformat my laptop, but I'm afraid if I do that, the album art will disappear if it's stored on a system file within the main hard drive OS. My question is this, is the information which tells the OS to display the album art listed in a hidden system file on the external Lacie drive or my laptop hard drive and if I reformat will I have to reassociate all of the album art to the folders on the external or will it keep it's associations.     From a (very long, but definitely worth to read) article on SSDs: When you delete a file in your OS, there is no reaction from either a hard drive or SSD. It isn’t until you overwrite the sector (on a hard drive) or page (on a SSD) that you actually lose the data. File recovery programs use this property to their advantage and that’s how they help you recover deleted files. The key distinction between HDDs and SSDs however is what happens when you overwrite a file. While a HDD can simply write the new data to the same sector, a SSD will allocate a new (or previously used) page for the overwritten data. The page that contains the now invalid data will simply be marked as invalid and at some point it’ll get erased. So, what would be the best way to securely erase files stored on a SSD? Overwriting with random data as we are used to from hard disks (e.g. using the "shred" utility) won't work unless you overwrite the WHOLE drive...

The only way I can tell it did not run was that it returns a dataset with 0 tables in it. But when investigating the error it is not appearant that the procedure does not exist. EDIT Upon further investigation command.Connection.FireInfoMessageEventOnUserErrors = true; is causeing the error to be surpressed into the InfoMessage Event From BOL When you set FireInfoMessageEventOnUserErrors to true, errors that were previously treated as exceptions are now handled as InfoMessage events. All events fire immediately and are handled by the event handler. If is FireInfoMessageEventOnUserErrors is set to false, then InfoMessage events are handled at the end of the procedure. What I want is each print statement from Sql to create a new log record. Setting this property to false combines it as one big string. So if I leave the property set to true, now the question is can I discern a print message from an Error ANOTHER EDIT So now I have the code so that the flag is set to true and checking the error number in the method void Connection_InfoMessage(object sender, SqlInfoMessageEventArgs e) { // These are not really errors unless the Number >0 // if Number = 0 that is a print message foreach (SqlError sql in e.Errors) { if (sql.Number == 0) { Logger.WriteInfo("Sql Message",sql.Message); } else { // Whatever this was it was an error throw new DataException(String.Format("Message={0},Line={1},Number={2},State{3}", sql.Message, sql.LineNumber, sql.Number, sql.State)); } } } The issue now that when I throw the error it does not bubble up to the statement that made the call or even the error handler that is above that.     I have a question about XSS Can forms be used as a vector for XSS even if the data is not stored in the database and used at a later point? i.e. in php the code would be this: <form input="text" value="<?= @$_POST['my_field'] ?>" name='my_field'> Showing an alert box (demonstrate that JS can be run) on your own browser is trivial with the code above. But is this exploitable across browsers as well? The only scenario I see is where you trick someone into visiting a certain page, i.e. a combination of CSRF and XSS. "Stored in a database and used at a later point": the scenario I understand about CSS is where you're able to post data to a site that runs JavaScript and is shown on a page in a browser that has greater/different privileges than your own. But, to be clear, this is not wat I'm talking about above.

    I have an Amazon EC2 instance of Windows Server 2008 where some genius managed to disable the network connection so that the instance is now isolated in its own little universe. I can shut down the instance and edit the "C:\" drive volume by attaching it to another running instance. This is equivalent to removing the system drive from a dead machine and attaching it to another computer to edit the files. Question: Where is the network connection enabled / disabled setting stored? If I can tweak this setting by editing the registry or a file to re-enable the network connection, I can then resurrect my Amazon server.

    What is a best practice for storing server spares (hard drives, RAM, power supplies, etc) with respect to how/where they are stored? Some options are storing them in climate controlled storage or just a standard warehouse-type stockroom? My understanding is that all other things being equal climate-controlled storage is preferred. What are the risks of storing that type of thing in a non-climate-controlled, somewhat dusty shelving area? Conversely are there risks to storing spares in a climate controlled area? If there are space limitations in climate controlled storage are there some parts, such as hard drives, which should be in climate controlled, while other parts such as power supplies will probably be ok in non climate controlled storage?

  • How do I import Outlook 2007 accounts and rules and IE usernames and stored passwords from old HD?

    I had an older PC running Win7 and the motherboard died on me. I've since updated my PC to another Win7 machine running a RAID 0 along with my old HDD installed as an extra drive. The problem is, I need to somehow import my Outlook email accounts (10) and rules along with my IE usernames and adjacent stored passwords for all the sites I've visited. I don't want to have to recreate the wheel for all this data. What I've found is that I have to run regedit in order to do so, but I cannot seem to boot to the old drive in order to run regedit and export the files. Can someone please help me?

  • I'm looking for a reliable way to verify T-SQL stored procedures. Anybody got one?

    Hi all-- We're upgrading from SQL Server 2005 to 2008. Almost every database in the 2005 instance is set to 2000 compatibility mode, but we're jumping to 2008. Our testing is complete, but what we've learned is that we need to get faster at it. I've discovered some stored procedures that either SELECT data from missing tables or try to ORDER BY columns that don't exist. Wrapping the SQL to create the procedures in SET PARSEONLY ON and trapping errors in a try/catch only catches the invalid columns in the ORDER BYs. It does not find the error with the procedure selecting data from the missing table. SSMS 2008's intellisense, however, DOES find the issue, but I can still go ahead and successfully run the ALTER script for the procedure without it complaining. So, why can I even get away with creating a procedure that fails when it runs? Are there any tools out there that can do better than what I've tried? The first tool I found wasn't very useful: DbValidator from CodeProject, but it finds fewer problems than this script I found on SqlServerCentral, which found the invalid column references. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Check Syntax of Database Objects -- Copyrighted work.     I'm wondering what is actually stored in a CouchDB database B-tree? The CouchDB: The Definitive Guide tells that a database B-tree is used for append-only operations and that a database is stored in a single B-tree (besides per-view B-trees).     Using this previous question as motivation, I would like to temporarily store images and videos in Isolated Storage. My application (written in WPF/C#) will allow a user to review these temporarily stored items by viewing their contents in a MediaElement. I was hoping to set the MediaElement's Source Property to a video or image's URI stored in IsolatedStorage but I cannot figure out how to dynamically create a URI since it doesn't appear to be naively supported by IsolatedStorage. Any help would be greatly appreciated - thank you in advance! Update - 1/21/09 After battling the issue for a day, I concluded that the Isolated Storage approach is not practical for storing large video files that need to be referenced by a Uri.

If there is an update the file must then be downloaded and saved to the iPhone. I'm not really sure what direction I need to head in. Currently I know that I can use NSURLConnection delegate methods to establish a connection and receive a response but I'm not sure how to implement this with the web service to grab the file and replace the current one that is stored on the iPhone. And, how do I know if the emails will remain on the user's machine once I move the information from server to server?

  • Can You Specify Where LVM Snapshots Are (Initially) Stored?

    Disclaimer: this is my first time using lvm. Upon RTFM, it appears that LVM snapshots are automatically stored in the same directory as the original logical volume. In my case, that would mean the /dev directory. This isn't very nice, because there's not enough disk space in there for me to store a large snapshot. So when I run a command like lvcreate --size 1G --snapshot --name snapshot /dev/lvmData/usr, I need an additional 1G of space free in /dev? Is there any way to specify a different directory in which to store my snapshot?
