• Mapped network drive connection timeout

  I have server "Alpha" and server "Beta". Server Beta has a shared folder, that is mapped on server Alpha as "X:" On server Alpha there is a .vbs script that runs and take some files on local drive and copy them on X: drive. My issue is if no user log on server Alpha for a long time, it seems like the tcp connection underneath the mapped drive has a timeout, and the vbs script fails on the copy of file. As soon I log with remote desktop on Alpha server, the .vbs is successfull on the copy of the files. I have made many tests, using file logs to check what was happening and I found no way to refresh the connection and let the .vbs be able to copy files unattended.. I have always to log with remote desktop on Alpha server to refresh the connection and let the .vbs copy the files without issues. What can I do to avoid to log every time? The .vbs script runs 3 times a day and is very annoying. I do not have control over server Beta so I cannot change anything there, and I am very limited on changes I can do on server Alpha ( I cannot change registry and that sort of things)

  I just bought a new solid state drive, and I'd like to copy all of the files and setup from my current Mac OS X hard drive onto it. What is the best way to do this? I have a 1TB external hard drive, my drive backed up on Time Machine, and Snow Leopard on a DMG, but no external mount for the SSD, and no install DVD (it's at my parents house, promise). I'm familiar with the command line and booting up Mac OS X from a hard drive.

  I have a server which I'd like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on, but I've had some problems and thought it would be nice to get things working in a Virtualbox VM with the same features as the server. I want to enable UEFI-boot in the VM. I "Enable EFI" in the System / Motherboard settings for the VM. I make sure the Ubuntu Server 12.04 ISO is inserted when I boot. And yet I get stuck in the UEFI boot console when I start the VM. How do I install Ubuntu Server 12.04 in a UEFI boot-enabled Virtualbox machine?

  I currently have message filters set up in Thunderbird to put incoming email messages from various sources in appropriate server side folders. Since I envision starting to use a smartphone (Android) based IMAP client which doesn't support folders or message filters I'd like to move these filters server side and take them off the clients. The Linux server email system is sendmail and UW IMAP. Can someone steer me in the direction of setting up such filters on the server side?

• Thunderbird: export email account settings

  I'd like to create a new profile for Thunderbird using the same mail accounts I already configured in my old profile. As it is quite a number of accounts, it would be great to have a way to export/import them instead of writing down the settings just to fill in again in the new profile. Using web search and search here I mainly found following suggestions that do not match what I need: Copy the whole profile: Not possible for me as I don't want to copy other settings, the downloaded mail data etc. and the old profile broke when running out of space in the home folder anyway. Use mozBackup: There seem to be several programs by that name (forks?). In any case, it's Windows-only and hence no option (I am mostly on Linux and prefer platform-independent solutions anyway) Use accountex: Seems to do what I want, but it is not compatible with current Thunderbird version (supports only up to version 3.1) Posts with various tips from 4 years ago: Top results in the web search with the G. But they do not work in current versions of Thunderbird either. Did I overlook anything? After all, it doesn't sound like I was looking for something nobody ever looked for.

• One Way Sync with Dropbox?

  Is there any way I can mirror a dropbox folder to my C drive by just running a portable file? Extra background information because I know you guys hate it when you don't get the entire situation: I go back to University in fall and I need a new storage solution. I decided to use DropBox to sync my tiny University files (< 5 MB). I need to access these files from 4 machines: Windows 7 Home machine Windows 7 University A machine Windows 7 University B machine Android tablet 1 and 4 are a non-issue. The problem lies with 2 and 3. I want to be able to edit my files on 2 and 3 but those machines are not mine. There is an easy fix. Run a portable version of the DropBox syncer on a USB drive. But the problem is that I don't want to carry a USB drive around with me all the time. In that case, I can just run the small portable DropBox syncer off the internet. But where will it to store the files? A temporary directory on the C drive. There is only one issue left: there are hundreds of machines that I will randomly use that fit in categories 2 and 3. My portable DropBox syncer will notice that the temporary directory is empty on each new PC I use and instead of downloading my DropBox folder to the machine, it syncs the other way around i.e. it deletes my entire DropBox. The solution is to mirror my DropBox onto the temporary directory before running the DropBox syncer.

• Cloning my Windows boot drive--Windows hangs on booting off new drive.

  I copied my Windows XP partition to a new drive using GParted live CD (using the GUI). I made sure to flag it as boot, and then used my XP disc to enter Recovery Console and ran fixboot and fixmbr on it. Now, it will boot up to the Windows flash screen, but hangs at that point. Any suggestions on how to proceed? I am just trying to come up with a quick way to clone my system and make the drive bootable, and gParted seemed like the easiest way, but now I've been working on it for over an hour.

• Is there any chance that my data will get silently corrupted with a robocopy SMB network transfer?

  I'm setting up a NAS box for the first time. At the moment, I have most of my data backed up to a few local hard drives, and I intend to transfer all the data to my NAS over ethernet once the RAID array is setup. Since this is all happening over the network, I'm a bit worried about my data getting corrupted silently during transfer. From what I understand, data generally doesn't get corrupted without notice on local transfers because a checksum is performed at some point by the drive or the OS. (This could be totally wrong.) Does the same thing happen with SMB, or is it up to the transferrer to check the integrity of their data? And if it doesn't happen with SMB, is there a protocol that does ensure data integrity? I know that rsync can checksum a transfer, but I'm on Windows and I already have a robocopy configuration that I like. Will my data be safe or do I have to use an external checksum tool to make sure?

• Rsync fails for files that start with underscore when destination is zfs

  everyone. I'm using rsync3.1.0pre1 on Mac OS X 10.8.5, and am trying to rsync one folder to another. The destination is a ZFS volume mounted via SMB. The problem I'm having is that files that start with underscore (e.g., '_filename.jpg') are not being successfully synced to the destination. I get the following error message: rsync: mkstemp "/path/to/destination/._filename.jpg.NUgYJw" failed: Permission denied (13) In this case, '_filename.jpg' does not make it to the destination. I understand that rsync creates hidden, temporary files at the destination which are preceded with '.' and have a random file extension appended on the end. But the original filename starts with '', not '.', and I haven't asked rsync to copy extended attributes / resource forks over (unless it always does it). The rsync command I'm using is: rsync -avE --exclude='.DS_Store' --exclude '.Trash' --exclude 'Thumbs.db' --exclude '._*' --delete /source/ /destination/ Has anyone found a way around this problem? • Issue with corrupt 1tb volume: can we rescue SQL databases?

  We have an instance where some how a 1tb volume has become corrupted. There are Event ID 55 errors in the system event viewer. When running chkdsk, it gets to 47% verifying indexes and returns to the command prompt. If we are unable to rescue the data on the drive then we have a full backup of the databases from some time ago. The logfiles of which are on a different volume which is intact. Would it be viable to restore the databases and somehow replay the log files? I have seen articles about replaying logfiles from a logfile backup (.trn), however we have the actual logfiles (.ldf) Any help would be appreciated.

• Need help recovering a corrupt SQL database

  I have a very special case that I have been working on for several days. I have a very large SQL Server 2008 database (about 2 TB) that contains 500 filegroups to support very large partitioned tables. Recently we had a catastophic failure on one of the drive and lost several filegroups and the database became in-accessible. We have been doing filegroup backups on a daily basis, but due to other issues, we lost our most recent backup of the log and the primary filegroup. We have all the data backed up but the primary filegroup backup is old. There have been no schema changes since the primary filegroup backup, but the lsn's are now all out of sync and we cannot recover the data. I have tried everything I could think of (and have tried just about every trick and hack I could google) but I still end up at the same point where I get messages saying that the files for filegroup x do not match the primary filegroup. I am now at the point of trying to edit the system tables (we have a separate temporary environment to do this so we are not worried about corrupting any production databases). I have tried updated sys.sysdbreg, sys.sysbrickfiles, and sys.sysprufiles to try to trick SQL into thinking all the files are online, but a "Select * From OPENROWSET(TABLE DBPROP, 5)" shows a different database state from what I see in sys.sysdbreg. I am now thinking I need to somehow edit the headers of the actual data files to try to line up the lsn's with the primary. I appreciate any help anyone can give me here, but please do not respond with things like "you are not supposed to do edit mdf, ndf files...." or "see msdn article....", etc. This is an advanced emergency case and I need a real hack so we can just get to the data in this corrupt database and export to a fresh new database. I know there is a way to do this, but not knowing what the DBPROP system functions does (i.e. does it look at system tables or does it actually open the file) is keeping me from trying to figure out how to fool SQL into allowing me to read these files.   I am trying to set up an exchange mailbox backup job with Vembu Storegrid and StoreGrid is unable to list the mailboxes for the client. While I was troubleshooting the issue, I did notice another thing: running the Get-Mailbox command on the mail server as the backup user only shows the mailbox for that account, while running Get-Mailbox as my admin account returns a list of what appears to be all the mailboxes. My service account is a member of "Administrators", "Domain Admins", and "Domain Users". What additional permissions might be required to list all mailboxes in the system?

The computer on that network drive is running Windows XP. I want to back up data on Windows 7. How would I do so? I'd like something similar to Mac OS X' time machine. So copy of data every hour, day, week. Then thinning out, data gets deleted automatically as time goes by. For example, the data for last day is kept as hourly snapshots. For last week, as daily snapshots every day. And for last month as weekly snapshots. How can I achieve this?

• time on files differ by 1 sec. FAIL Robocopy sync

  I am trying to use Robocopy to sync (/IMG) a folder on my PC and a shared network drive. The problem is that the file attributes differ by 1 sec on both locations (creation,modified and access). So every time I run robocopy, it syncs the file again... BTW, problem is the same if I delete the target file and robocopy it from new... still, new file has 1 sec different properties. Env Details: Source: Win 7 64 bit Target: WD My Book World Edition NAS 1TB which takes its time from online NTP pool.ntp.org (I don't know if file system is FAT or not)

• Wondering about the Windows 7 serial number my laptop has, and its uses.

  So that's the serial number of my pre-installed windows copy, I take it. But am I allowed to use it again when, say, I don't know, my system gets crippled by a sneaky virus? First, I found a large 5 Terabyte NAS drive that would IMO fulfill my storage requirements. Second, I also found that Windows XP seems to have a hard drive size limit (see 'Is there a limit to the size of a hard drive for Windows XP pre-SP1?'): XP should handle up to 2 TB per volume after the service packs are applied. You are correct. There was a 137gb limit on the orginal pre service pack windows xp. This was addressed/fixed in SP1. My question is, will my Windows XP SP3 32 bit machine see the 5 Terabyte NAS and be able to read/write properly to the NAS drive?

• Remove some junk characters from server console log.

  Please look in to the picture,here am trying to open(with vi editor) my server console log file(around 100MB) and it takes more than two minutes to open with so many special characters.after deleting the first line (means typing "dd")then i can easily view the file and size of the file is also reduced very much.My server OS is RHEL 5.4 and jboss is running in to it.   Here's the problem: I would like to keep lots of home made videos. Of course, they are subject to being lost, or somebody could steal the the computer, or water or fire could destroy them. Secondly, I have to plug in my hard drive every time I want to watch something, which I find slow and cumbersome. • Transaction log is full and does not free up space

  Hi, I have a database in SQL Server 2005 whose transaction log becomes full. It is using snapshot replication. I noticed the transaction log is not freeing up space. So I created an additional transaction log. Three days has passed and this first transaction log is still full. I performed a full database backup and transaction backup. Then I tried to shrink the transaction log but the shrink failed. Can anyone advise why shrinking transaction log is failing? ANy other recommendation on how to resolve the problem?
