  • Are Icon design UI guidelines still valid ?

    Found UI guidelines of Launcher icon design http://d.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/icon_design.html but System Icons in recent Android releases doesn't seem to follow these guidelines (icons are flat instead simplified 3D perspective, as described in document). Are they already obsolete and what are the current guidelines ?

  • URL Slugs: Redirects or 404s?

    Some sites, like here at SO, allow 'bogus' slugs in the URL. Before implementing URL slugs on my site, I have a question of 'best practices'... Given a structure like example.com/123/article-slug-here/, if my site allows bogus slugs by querying on the ID - Should I ... just do a redirect to the appropriate/canonical URL (verifying the slug, and redirecting in case of a mismatch)? -or- return a 404, since technically example.com/123/this-article-s-u-x doesn't exist?

    Since I've read Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines (there's a PDF download avaliable) I've found it to be admirably self-deprecating, humbly pointing out their own horrible UI practices long scolded by Joel Spolsky. I'd like to know, however, what they had in mind while they made those mistakes. Is this (terrific) UX Guidelines document something new, or were there previous issues of such? If so, where can I find them? My prayers to Google yielded no leniency.

    I have loaded my database with one table under "Data Connections" in the "Server Explorer" pane. What is the standard / best-practices way to handle a simple query in a VB ASPX page? My left <div> would be a set of form elements to filter rows, and when the button is clicked, the main <div> would show the columns I want for the rows returned.     In C#, How would one go about spawning multiple threads and then sequentially adding results to a list before returning the entire result set? What are some best practices? I'm so far using an ManualResetEvent to signal when the last element has been processed by a thread. But when it returns, I need to have them consolidate the result sets in sequential order so that we don't get into contention issues with the return value list (total results).

    The Android docs indicate that I should ship with different icons for different resolution phone screens. http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html#qualifiers res/drawable-ldpi/my_icon.png // icon image for low density res/drawable-mdpi/dpi/my_icon.png // icon for medium density res/drawable-hdpi/my_icon.png // icon image for high density This does not work when compiling with Eclipse for the Android. If you have a staging/dev Wordpress setup used for testing new pluging and such, how do you go about migrating the data in the staging database back to the production database?
