• How to create an auto-grader in and for Python

  I'm trying to create an auto-grader for one of my beginning programming courses for python. From my online search, I've come to know that it is effectively a unit test framework that tests the student's code rather than production code but I'm not really sure how to structure the flow of the program. Can anyone please provide a strategy for submission of code by students and automating the whole process of marking? For instance, how would the student code be submitted and then stored/structured on disk, how would the grades be stored/reported? I'm only looking for a broad strategy and will try on my own to fill in the blanks. (I asked this on stockoverflow.com initially but it's considered as off-topic and I was suggested to ask here.)

• Are developers expected to have skills of business analysts?

  Our business analyst has left the team. We are now expected to do the work which was previously done by the business analyst, and the management thinks that a task which is done in three months by a business analyst can be done in one month by a developer. My experience is in programming only, and I'm not familiar to the business intelligence tools. To me this seems like maybe an unfair comparison or expectation, and might even trivialize the role of a business analyst. Has anyone else encountered this situation? How to deal with it?

• HP Envy Beats Edition can play CDs, but not DVDs

  After a fresh install, and various other tests (troubleshooting), I have concluded that my laptop (an HP Envy 14 - Beats Edtion) will not play DVDs, however it will play CDs. When I first got the laptop, up until recently it played DVDs perfectly, I doubt there is a hardware issue sees as it loads the DVDs and can view the files in them, but not play them, as well as read and work with CDs perfectly. Was there an update or something of the like that may have caused this? If so, is there a fix? I typically use this laptop 's HDMI out with my TV as a DVD player... so it would be very beneficial if there was a solution to this problem. There was a similar issue with the touchpad that there was a fix for... so I'm hoping that this is something similar

• Unity and games don't work on new Thinkpad T420

  Here's my setup: Lenovo ThinkPad T420, brand new NVIDIA Graphics Card 4GB of Ram 128GB Solid State Drive Intel Core i5 Processor Given these specs, there's no reason games and Unity shouldn't be working. The strange thing is that both do work when I run from a live USB, but not when Ubuntu is installed to the hard drive. Is there something different with the 3D capabilities of running from the computer as opposed to running from the live USB? Edit: Some more information: When I log in for the first time when running from the hard drive, Ubuntu says "It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment."

• Render 3d object to 2d surface (embedded system)

  i am working on an embedded system of a sort, and in some free time i would like to test its drawing capabilities. System in question is ARM Cortex M3 microcontroller attached to EasyMX Stellaris board. And i have a small 320x240 TFT screen :) Now, i have some free time each day and i want to create rotating cube. Micro C PRO for ARM doesnt have 3d drawing capabilities, which means it must be done in software. From the book Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 10 i know matrix algebra for transformations but that is cool when you have DirectX to set camera right. I gues i could make 2d object to rotate, but how would i go with 3d one? Any ideas and examples are welcome. Although i would prefer advices. I'd like to understand this.

• Cinnamon Settings blank after update

  Using Ubuntu 12.04 with the cinnamon desktop, I installed the most recent updates and now when I open "System Settings" the entire window appears as a blank white screen. The headers for APPEARANCE, PREFERENCES, and HARDWARE are present, but the usual icons for *Background, *Hot Corners, *Printers, etc. are no longer visible. Some of these settings can still be altered via the terminal: cinnamon-settings backgrounds cinnamon-settings applets cinnamon-settings mouse and touchpad But other commands, such as cinnamon-settings hot corners are met with an error. This is obviously a problem with cinnamon, so I just want to bring it to attention and find out when they plan on fixing the bug. A workaround can be found on the web, but it seems way to risky to rely on.

• Issues with Dz77BH-55K Motherboard and i7 processor on 12.04

  I just built a computer with Intel's DZ77BH-55K motherboard with i7-3770 processor. On 12.04, 11.10, and 11.04 and Linux Mint 12, the computer has been really laggy. The graphics aren't working (choppy effects, bad resolution) and the keyboard and mouse inputs are even laggy and unreliable (skips keystrokes). I'm not sure what the problem is or what I can do to fix it. I tried sudo apt-get install mesa-utils but nothing changed. I've also messed around in the BIOS but no luck there either. Any ideas? Could it possibly be a hardware issue?

• Stuck on busybox after a fresh install

  I installed 11.10 and was getting stuck on Busybox unless I type exit. After grabbing the latest updates it then didn't get stuck on busybox but instead on a black screen of nothingness. I've now reformatted and started again using the exit technique for the time being. I had a search here before posting and none of the answers gave much insight, other than it 'could be a gfx card driver issue'. I'm using new hardware that has no issues with Mint, Win7 or WinXp. BUT note, I'm not dual booting, its a complete fresh install formatting the entire drive. Any help is appreciated as I'd really like to get stuck into Ubuntu. Thanks in advance. -Luke

• how to find available wireless networks

  I'm using an HP Pavilion dv6000 I've looked at other answers similar to this question how ever when I look at my network symbol it doesn't say anything that the answer below says "Make sure that your wifi hardware switch is on or not. It is either F2 or F12 or near to it. Once the switch is enabled, there is a small fan-like applet on the top panel (Gnome Network Manager), fourth from the right. Click on it and if there is no tick mark on the option 'Enable Wireless', enable it. Wait till your wifi connection name appears." it how says 'Enable Networking' my wi-fi switch is on and I've tried using terminal to kill the applet as another answer suggests trying. Does anyone have any other ideas that might help? Just in case anybodies curious as to how I'm posting this I'm on my other ubuntu laptop that's running an older version.

• How is Sencha Touch performing on Android in practice ?

  Hi I'm just about to start a project using Sencha Touch, and just done some minor testing on my HTC desire device. All tutorial videos at Vimeo seems to be using an iPhone emulator running on a Mac. Im not sure how fast this emulator is compared to a real iPhone device or even an real Android device, but from what i have experienced, it seems that my HTC desire is not performing that nicly as this emulator. All animations (sliding, fading, etc) seems abit laggy. You can easily notice that the FPS is much less than on the Vimeo videos. HTC desire is a relativly new and modern Android 2.2 phone, running with decent hardware, so im wondering if Sencha Touch is "ready" for the Android platform. Anybody with practical experience with Android and Sencha Touch ?

• Adding unit tests to a legacy, plain C project

  The title says it all. My company is reusing a legacy firmware project for a microcontroller device, written completely in plain C. There are parts which are obviously wrong and need changing, and coming from a C#/TDD background I don't like the idea of randomly refactoring stuff with no tests to assure us that functionality remains unchanged. Also, I've seen that hard to find bugs were introduced in many occasions through slightest changes (which is something which I believe would be fixed if regression testing was used). A lot of care needs to be taken to avoid these mistakes: it's hard to track a bunch of globals around the code. To summarize: How do you add unit tests to existing tightly coupled code before refactoring? What tools do you recommend? (less important, but still nice to know) I am not directly involved in writing this code (my responsibility is an app which will interact with the device in various ways), but it would be bad if good programming principles were left behind if there was a chance they could be used.

• High Availability for IaaS, PaaS and SaaS in the Cloud

  Outages, natural disasters and unforeseen events have proved that even in a distributed architecture, you need to plan for High Availability (HA). In this entry I'll explain a few considerations for HA within Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). In a separate post I'll talk more about Disaster Recovery (DR), since each paradigm has a different way to handle that. Planning for HA in IaaS IaaS involves Virtual Machines - so in effect, an HA strategy here takes on many of the same characteristics as it would on-premises. The primary difference is that the vendor controls the hardware, so you need to verify what they do for things like local redundancy and so on from the hardware perspective. As far as what you can control and plan for, the primary factors fall into three areas: multiple instances, geographical dispersion and task-switching. In almost every cloud vendor I've studied, to ensure your application will be protected by any level of HA, you need to have at least two of the Instances (VM's) running. This makes sense, but you might assume that the vendor just takes care of that for you - they don't. If a single VM goes down (for whatever reason) then the access to it is lost. Depending on multiple factors, you might be able to recover the data, but you should assume that you can't. You should keep a sync to another location (perhaps the vendor's storage system in another geographic datacenter or to a local location) to ensure you can continue to serve your clients. You'll also need to host the same VM's in another geographical location. Everything from a vendor outage to a network path problem could prevent your users from reaching the system, so you need to have multiple locations to handle this. This means that you'll have to figure out how to manage state between the geo's. If the system goes down in the middle of a transaction, you need to figure out what part of the process the system was in, and then re-create or transfer that state to the second set of systems. If you didn't write the software yourself, this is non-trivial. You'll also need a manual or automatic process to detect the failure and re-route the traffic to your secondary location. You could flip a DNS entry (if your application can tolerate that) or invoke another process to alias the first system to the second, such as load-balancing and so on. There are many options, but all of them involve coding the state into the application layer. If you've simply moved a state-ful application to VM's, you may not be able to easily implement an HA solution. Planning for HA in PaaS Implementing HA in PaaS is a bit simpler, since it's built on the concept of stateless applications deployment. Once again, you need at least two copies of each element in the solution (web roles, worker roles, etc.) to remain available in a single datacenter. Also, you need to deploy the application again in a separate geo, but the advantage here is that you could work out a "shared storage" model such that state is auto-balanced across the world. In fact, you don't have to maintain a "DR" site, the alternate location can be live and serving clients, and only take on extra load if the other site is not available. In Windows Azure, you can use the Traffic Manager service top route the requests as a type of auto balancer. Even with these benefits, I recommend a second backup of storage in another geographic location. Storage is inexpensive; and that second copy can be used for not only HA but DR. Planning for HA in SaaS In Software-as-a-Service (such as Office 365, or Hadoop in Windows Azure) You have far less control over the HA solution, although you still maintain the responsibility to ensure you have it. Since each SaaS is different, check with the vendor on the solution for HA - and make sure you understand what they do and what you are responsible for. They may have no HA for that solution, or pin it to a particular geo, or perhaps they have a massive HA built in with automatic load balancing (which is often the case).   All of these options (with the exception of SaaS) involve higher costs for the design. Do not sacrifice reliability for cost - that will always cost you more in the end. Build in the redundancy and HA at the very outset of the project - if you try to tack it on later in the process the business will push back and potentially not implement HA.   I am learning LWJGL so i can start working on my game. In order to learn LWJGL I got the idea to implement the map builder so I can get comfortable with graphics programming. Now, for the map creation tool I need to draw new elements or draw the old one's with different coordinates. Let me explain this: My game will be a 2D scroller. The map will be consisting of multiple rectangles ( 2 strip triangles). When I click my left-mouse button i want to start the rectangle and when I release it I want to stop the rectangle bottom-right at that position. As I want to use VBOs I want to know how to modify data inside the VBO based on user input. Should i have a copy of a vertex array and then add the whole array to the VBO at each user input? How is usually implemented the VBO update?

• Graphic demonstrating emphasis of front end in web apps

  I remember stumbling across an amusing graphic a year or so ago which demonstrated the tiers of web development. The back-end was shown as a tiny box, but the front end was shown as a huge box crammed with lots of front-end technologies like AJAX, DHTML. This is all a vague recollection. Does anyone know where on the Intraweb this graphic might be? It was probably on a programming cartoon site, but I only view XKCD on a regular basis, and I couldn't find it on there. Although tagged as fun, my request does have a productive edge to it - it would be quite useful in driving home to my colleagues how UI top-heavy web application development has become.

• Sound works for only one user at a time

  I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

The interviewer asked me a question and at that time I didn't know the answer but if I had been asked about just 4 months ago, I could have answered it. The question was from new language that I learned just 4 months ago. But I just get overview of the language and just get started working on that. Whenever I face difficultly, I google it. That means we do not have to memorize the whole programming language book! So in that situation I felt that Google screwed my job! Not talking subjectively, Is it good to google all the time?

  In several of my programming courses in the University, my teachers always told me the following: A function and a procedure are basically the same thing: the only difference is that a function returns a value, and the procedure doesn't. That means that this: function sum($a, $b) { return $a + $b; } ... is a function, and this: function sum($a, $b) { echo $a + $b; } ... is a procedure. In the same train of thought, I've seen that a method is the equivalent of a function in the OOP world. That means that this: class Example { function sum($a, $b) { return $a + $b; } } Is a method — but how do you call this? class Example { function sum($a, $b) { echo $a + $b; } } What's the equivalent name, or how do you call a method that doesn't returns anything?

• Confused with X.ORG version number

  There is my trouble: I'm trying to install ATI drivers on my Dell Vostro 3350 laptop. On the AMD's site I followed steps to determine which driver should I use. After selecting what hardware I use I got a link to download amd-driver-installer-12-3-x86.x86_64.run and below was a description of that driver that it was compatible with X.Org version from 6.7 to 7.6. And I do not know what version of X.Org my Ubuntu uses. Cause after googling I found that version is 7.6 in Ubuntu 11.10. But after typing: X -version I got the output: X.Org X Server 1.10.4 Release Date: 2011-08-19 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0 So what is the exact version of X.Org in Ubuntu 11.10 and how should one reliably determine it? Can anyone construe? Thanks.

• 12.04 - how to install alsa 1.0.27, to resolve dell sound card microphone echo issue to local speaker?

  Problem: Microphone in or Line in microphone audio is instantly captured and sinked to the local speaker, cause horrible echo problem About my system: (NO PulseAudio used (cause its always crash and unstable for my system/hardware, so auto killed and never used) I have ALSA 1.0.25 version running in Ubuntu 12.04 / 64-bit, with random kernel installed: kernel 3.5.0-17-generic kernel 3.8.x kernel 3.11.x But the echo problem is not resolved after trying all kernel. So, last option left now is to use ALSA 1.0.27 to see if that solves the problem. Is there any away to use ALSA 1.0.27 from any PPA to install in the Ubuntu 12.04? (without making it from source, to avoid breaking other packages and dependencies)

• Online iPad 1&2 emulators give different results compared to the real thing

  I'm designing a centered website (jQuery Isotope). Thre sandbox is here. I have used some online iPad 1&2 emulators to test how the site is viewed on these devices. Then, I managed to get hold of the real thing. Result: on real iPads, the site is centered and the layout adjusts automatically as expected. In online iPad emulators, the site is not quite centered and additional Isotope elements are squeezed in. Of course, I trust the real thing more than online emulators, but why is this happening? To me, it feels like website testing with online emulators is not so reliable after all? If this question is wrong here, please move it or tell me where it should go. SO is about programming, this question isn't. Thanks!
