• Grandma's Computer - Can a user that belongs only to the "Users" group in Windows XP install malware, virus or IE addons?

  I am trying to figure out if having a user in the "Users" group will be enough to prevent her from install unwanted software. The things that I don't want the user to be able to install are: virus malware bandoo stuff Internet Explorer Addons To put you in context, I am thinking of my grandma's computer, I want her to be able to read all her email stuff and attachments, but without the hassle of needing to reinstall the whole computer every few months. The computer will run Windows XP, with some free antivirus. It will not be part of any domain. It is just a home computer. Linux, I have tried making her use it, but she was already accustomed to Windows and was not really an option to have her re-learn where was the shutdown button. So, are these considerations enough to prevent her installing unwanted software? What other options come to you mind? Thanks

• Running Ubuntu Server from a USB key / thumb drive (being mindful of flash's write limitations)

  Having become disillusioned with hacking Buffalo NAS devices, I've decided to roll my own home server. After some research, I have settled on an HP Proliant Microserver with Ubuntu Server and a ZFS RAID-Z array for data. I settled on this configuration after trying and regretfully rejecting FreeNAS because the Logitech Media Server (LMS) software isn't available on the AMD64 flavour of this platform and because I think Debian/Ubuntu server is a better future-proof platform. I considered Open Media Vault, but concluded that it isn't quite yet ready for my purposes. That said, FreeNAS does include the option to run itself off a 2GB+ flash device like USB key or thumb drive. Apparently FreeNAS is mindful of the write limitations of flash devices and so creates virtual disks for running the OS, writing only the required configuration information back to flash. This would give me an extra data drive slot. Q: Can Ubuntu Server be configured sensibly to run off a flash device such as a USB key/thumb drive? If so, how? The write limitations of flash should be accounted for.

• How do I mount a CIFS share via FSTAB and give full RW to Guest

  I want to create a Public folder that has full RW access. The problem with my configuration is that Windows users have no issues as guests (they can RW and Delete), my Ubuntu client can't do the same. We can only write and read, but not create or delete.   I am affected by the BUG: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/874241 Otherwise, if like me you have a laptop connected to a second monitor of higher resolution, LIGHTDM at the login stage, mirrors the displays in both screens and assign to them a common resolution (1024X768) in my case, instead of extending the desktop (Primary screen with the greeter and secondary with just a logo as mentioned in the Multiple Monitors UX specifications book for 12.04).   I have a problem with my sound card. I don't have volume up or down option anywhere. In the setting -> Sound I don't have any card detected. • Where does the YouTube video files stored on system nowadays?

  When I open a youtube video with firefox I could not find any video file inside ~/.mozilla/firefox/<some_string>.default/Cache/. I also tried with google-chrome like, ps ax | grep flash ls -l /proc/[*PID*]/fd | grep Flash But again /proc/[*PID*]/fd does not have any video like file. ls -l /proc/[*PID*]/fd have some results like lrwx------ 1 root root 64 Nov 9 12:18 22 -> /run/shm/.com.google.Chrome.eOsHNu (deleted) lrwx------ 1 root root 64 Nov 9 12:18 23 -> /run/shm/.com.google.Chrome.p8h6BL (deleted) Result of ls -l /proc/[*PID*]/fd | grep Flash for some videos from other site is like lrwx------ 1 root root 64 Nov 9 12:35 26 -> /home/username/.config/google-chrome/Default/Pepper Data/Shockwave Flash/.com.google.Chrome.QMzxP8 (deleted) But could not be copied. Then what are the places where firefox or google-chrome stores the streaming videos? And is it possible to recover(copy) a video from there to watch them offline? P.S I have other ways(downloaders) to have streaming videos, but my question is very specific.

• Tip: Keeping the ADF Mobile PDF Guide up to date

  This is a little tip for customers using Oracle's ADF Mobile. If you're like me, it's possible you don't rely on the online HTML version of the Mobile Developer's Guide for ADF, but rather download a PDF version of the file to use locally (look to the "PDF" link to the top right of the guide).  For me the convenience of the PDF is it's faster, I can search the whole document easily, I can split read the document across two pages on my home monitor, if I lose my internet connection the document is still available, and it's easy to read on my iPad (especially on long haul flights to the US across the Pacific where there is no internet connection!). The trigger point for me to download the Oracle PDF documentation has always been on a new point release of JDeveloper.  However in the case of ADF Mobile, as an extension to JDeveloper it is releasing at a much faster and independent schedule to JDeveloper and this includes updates to the documentation. As such the 11.1.2.4.0 ADF Mobile PDF guide you have locally might be out of date and you should take the opportunity to download the latest version.  This is also particularly important for ADF Mobile as not only are many new features being added for each release and included in the new documentation, but the guide is under rapid improvement to clarify much of what has been written to date.  Our documentation teams are super responsive to suggestions on how to improve the guides and this often shows per point release. How do you tell you've the latest guide? Look to the document part number which right now is "E24475-03".  This is a unique ID per release for the document, the first part being the document number, and the part after the dash the revision number.  If the website document number has a higher revision number, time to download a new up to date PDF. • Run command before and after printing with CUPS?

  Hello, this is a home setup. A central printer server (Linux) manages the queue, a HP 2430DTN is attached to it via 100Mbit/sec Ethernet. The printer is hooked up to a managable power source. A shell script watches the queue on the server (lpstat -o) and turn on the printer when there is a job. If the queue is empty for 10 minutes it turns the printer off. Now this setup messes up, stops the printer etc. after a couple of weeks and is in general "not so reliable". I now know how to change the stop-printer thing, but: Is there a way to run my turn printer on script and turn printer off script directly from cups without watching the queue? That would be so cool!

  my computer is running window XP home editon. the avg i am using is expirying soon and so a pop out ask me to install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011. When the download is about to complete, i was ask to reboot the computer, i click "OK". after my computer restart , there was a pop out say "AVG Installer- Error A system restart is required in order to continue with the installation. Please restart your system and try again." Since the only option was "OK" i click it, and restart my computer. After restarting, the same pop-out appear. I could not download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 as the pop-out keep appearing if i run it or uninstall. can anyone help me?? btw my brower is int

• Installed Java 7, but terminal still shows Java 6

  I've installed Java 7 on my Mac (10.7.5), but in the terminal there is still java 6. java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) There will be no problem with the version 6 on terminal, if I always got that errors when I tried to install a java application (LatexDraw): : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 The problem is related to instability of java 6 inferred from this link I've read this installed-java-7-on-mac-osx-but-terminal-is-still-using-version-6 and also try to change my Java version by using export JAVA_HOME="/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home", but in my folder /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions, there is no version 1.7, only versions under 1.6 ??? So, how can I fix this issue?

• Mixing JavaFX, HTML 5, and Bananas with the NetBeans Platform

  The banana in the image below can be dragged. Whenever the banana is dropped, the current date is added to the viewer: What's interesting is that the banana, and the viewer that contains it, is defined in HTML 5, with the help of a JavaScript and CSS file. The HTML 5 file is embedded within the JavaFX browser, while the JavaFX browser is embedded within a NetBeans TopComponent class. The only really interesting thing is how drop events of the banana, which is defined within JavaScript, are communicated back into the Java class. Here's how, i.e., in the Java class, parse the HTML's DOM tree to locate the node of interest and then set a listener on it. (In this particular case, the event listener adds the current date to the InstanceContent which is in the Lookup.) • Access to self created torrent on public tracker

  Not sure if this is the right site to ask this, but here it goes: Let's say I'd like to share a couple of private files with a few friends. The size of these are quite large, so I've figured the best route to distribute these is via torrent. So, on my home PC I create a torrent and start seeding and announce to a public tracker like openbittorrent and publicbt. Now, both of those are public trackers, but they don't seem to have anyway of searching through what is actually being tracked. If I'm only passing around the torrent file to a few friends, whats the chances that someone else will 'randomly' come across the torrent via the public tracker and start leeching?

• Anyway I can trick Carbonite into backing up an external hard drive?

  I use carbonite to back up my PC (Windows XP). We were running low on disk space on our home PC (down to 15 gig) so I went out and purchased an external hard drive. However, Carbonite will not back it up. I just want the external drive to be extra disk space. From their FAQ: The current version of Carbonite backs up only the files that reside on permanent hard drives on your computer. It will not back up network drives, external drives, and NAS (network accessed storage) drives. If there are files on a remote drive that you wish to include in your Carbonite backup, you should copy the files to a folder on your local hard drive. If the files are on a shared network drive, you could install Carbonite on the computer on which the network shared drive physically exists, and back the files up directly from that computer. Check back soon for a Carbonite service plan that will allow you to back up your external drives.

• Thunderbird segmentation fault problem

  Hey all, my thunderbird crashes few seconds after it boots up regardless of in safe mode or normal, here is a strace log: http://pastebin.com/tccfYwcD I've searched google, ubuntu forums, and mozilla bug tracker about this problem, but any of found answers did not helped me :/ I've tried: nscd daemon install solutions posted earlier fresh clean instal of ubuntu 10.10 (32b) and thunderbird 3.1.7 from repos on a VM - problem still exists removed all thunderbrid related dot files and dot dirs, and setup profile from beginning Remove thunderbird and related stuff with apt purge, and install tb from official .deb package None of these steps helps me, tb still crashes with segmentation fault :/ I use gmail IMAP account, I've searched and found few other tips on google, but with no success. I've even tried to remove mails from web gui, that came after first notice of problem, still no luck. I'm not using any network fs, and not sharing this account with anyone, and I do not use filesystem or home encryption either just clean install :/ If You guys need some more info for this let me know. TB: 3.1.7 from repos and official package Ubuntu 32bit 10.10 with medibuntu repos, fully updated

• Sun Java crashing, mostly with jboss

  I'm on Ubuntu 10.10. I keep having problems with Sun Java crashing on me. I mostly have it crashing on my Jboss server, but I've had it crash MANY MANY times running ANT tasks or the IntelliJ IDE. (I get this probably 2 or 3 times a day, if not more). I have another machine running Ubuntu 10.04 with Sun Java and I have yet to see this problem. 1.0.6_20 is the java version on the 10.04 machine. My machine is running 1.6.0_22. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to keep it from happening? Also: I have tried reinstalling it and I can't use OpenJDK.

• MacBook repeatedly disconnects from Wi-Fi

  I have an early 2008-model MacBook (2.4 GHz). The Wi-Fi router I have at home is a Linksys WRT54GX2 that I have had for a few years. My MacBook has recently started disconnecting from the router every few minutes, which is rather annoying. I can reconnect again without having to restart the router or anything, as it seems that the MacBook is just dropping the connection. I have tried changing the channel on the router, and upgrading the laptop from Leopard to Snow Leopard made no difference either. I'm only about six feet from the Linksys device, so distance isn't an issue. This only happens with the Linksys router, while I can use the local library's open network without any issues.   I want to move my data from dropbox to SpiderOak. I have 3 computers running dropbox. But I have a poor WAN connection with very limited upload bandwidth. So I thought I do as first step install the dropbox client on my server on the internet an download there my data from dropbox. Then after this I upload/backup my data from this server with a broadband connection to SpiderOak. After the backup is completed I setup the sync between my 3 computers so that they will not have to upload the data again. Will this process will work so that I don't have to upload my data again over my WAN connection at home?

In my actual .bashrc, I just have the following: configdir="$HOME/.config/bash" for file in "$configdir"/*.sh do source "$file" done I'd like to do the same for my .vimrc, but I am not that confident in VimL that I could write that. How would the snippet for .vimrc look like that includes all the snippets in a given subfolder? Ideally, I'd like to make a .vim/rc/ folder where I can put my snippets into.

• Free alternatives to vSphere for ESXi (if one exists)

  Dear All, Am feeling a touch confused and overwhemled. From what I gather even though ESXi is free I will only be able to manage my VMs (create or power on etc) for 60 days unless I buy a licence for vSphere. This is somewhat frustrating. As I am looking for a home lab to practice for various certs I was hoping to also practice using vmware stuff to do so. Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Is there a free built in web interface like there was with VMServer or is the only option vSphere (which is massively out of my price range)? Reason for asking is I have some software that is shared among multiple URL's all controlled in a CMS and it's kind of a pain to add new domains via ssh everytimee. And before someone points out a security hole, the software does check the current URL before doing any webpages :)

• Switching DVI socket

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 with Nvidia 9800 gt and Nvidia driver version 270.41.06 My video card has two DVI sockets, but I only use the single monitor configuration. Now, I think the main DVI socket might be busted, so I want to try to enable the other as the main one, however, I don't know how to achieve that. I tried just plugging the monitor in that socket but it won't auto-detect it (it would have been way too easy to just work).
