• How to catch printf from a dll?

  I've got a C++ console application that uses a third-party dll (jvm.dll, indirectly) that uses printf to print various error messages (Java stacktrace). I need to catch these stacktraces to a string in order to process them further, or at least to see them printed on the console. The thing is that I see the stacktrace only when debugging my application in VisualStudio (VS 2010). When I run my application in the "normal way", i.e. from the command line, nothing is printed on the console. So VS is able to somehow interfere the java output and display it. I need to be able to do the same thing. I've already tried freopen(), but without success. Also, I've found this question on the same problem, but without a clear answer.

• Can I allow a write access to a particular registry key without elevation?

  I develop an extension for Visual Studio 2005, 2008, and 2010. The Visual Studio 2005 SDK requires write access to the following registry key during builds. The normal way to handle this run Visual Studio with elevated privileges. The entire issue can be avoided if there's some way I can set permissions to allow access to this particular registry key without elevation: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\VisualStudio\8.0Exp Side note: This key is only used for testing Visual Studio 2005 extensions. The issue does not occur on client machines so this is just a workaround for my own development machine.

• PHP: Odd behaviour with date_sunset function

  I'm having a look at the date_sunset function in PHP and have met an issue that I find a bit strange. I have this piece of code: $sunset = date_sunset(mktime(0, 0, 0, 5, 14, 2010), $format, // Format 55.596041, // Latitude 12.992495, // Longitude 90, // Zenith 2 // GMT Offset ); For the three different formats, that would give me: SUNFUNCS_RET_STRING 21:05 SUNFUNCS_RET_DOUBLE 21.095732016315 SUNFUNCS_RET_TIMESTAMP 1273863944 // H:i:s O -> 19:05:44 +0000 Why is the timestamp format ignoring the gmt offset? Is is supposed to be like that? If so what is the reason behind that?

• SQL: Find difference between dates with grouping

  I have a problem that seems similar to this fellow - I just want to display the data slightly differently. I'm pretty terrible with SQL so can't modify it to suit, but perhaps someone else can. My table looks similar to this (date format is dd/mm/yyyy): ID User Date_start Role 1 Andy 01/04/2010 A 2 Andy 10/04/2010 B 3 Andy 20/04/2010 A 4 John 02/05/2010 A I want to show the total number of days that anyone was in a certain role. Users stay in the role until there is another entry into the table. Users can only be in one role at a time. So the summary data would look like this (assuming that the date is 04/05/2010): A: 26 days B: 10 days Thanks for any help :)

  In the olden times of .NET 1.1, I could use the SoapFormatter to find out exactly what was getting serialized when I copied an object into the clipboard. Fast forward to 2010, and I tried to do the same trick. It turns out the SoapFormatter does not support generics. Is there an alternative way to find out exactly what binary objects are serialized into the clipboard? For example lets say I have this class: public class Foo { public List<Goo> Children; } If I send an instance of it to the clipboard, I would like to take a look at what is in the clipboard to see if it's children list was included or not. Update: I was finally able to find the over copied field with the debugger. Visual Studio did it's job.

  Hi everybody. I'm using NHibernate with Lambda Extensions. I'd like to know how to nest a Max function with a Substring. The following statement retrieves Max("invoice_id") var ret = session .CreateCriteria<Invoice>() .SetProjection(Projections.Max("invoice_id")) .UniqueResult(); but in my case the field invoice_id is made in this way: 123452010 where 12345 is the invoice number, and 2010 is the current year. So I need to calculate the Max function only over the first 5 digits. How can I do it?

  Hello, I'm trying to write a Delphi program that will loop through each worksheet in an Excel file and format some cells. I'm receiving an error while trying to use the for-in loop over the Workbook.Worksheets collection, though.   I am trying to redirect everything to a single page from my /website/folder/ directory. I added a simple .htaccess with this simple code (I know this would require more code in .htaccess but it's just a test). RewriteEngine on RewriteRule .* index.php [NC,L] When I try : http://127.0.0.1:8888/website/folder/fileDoesntExistMustGoIndex I have an "Object not found 404" error and the access.log display: 127.0.0.1 - - [13/Mar/2010:13:48:31 -0500] "GET /website/folder/fileDoesntExistMustGoIndexHTTP/1.1" 404 1118 I have check the httpd.conf and I see nothing that could alter this .htaccess statement. Any idea?

• Why is only the suffix of work_index hashed?

  I'm reading through the PDF that Brett Slatkin has published for Google I/O 2010: "Data pipelines with Google App Engine": http://tinyurl.com/3523mej In the video (the Fan-in part) Brett says that the work_index has to be a hash, so that 'you distribute the load across the BigTable': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSDC_TU7rtc#t=48m44 ...and this is how work_index is created: work_index = '%s-%d' % (sum_name, knuth_hash(index)) ...which I guess creates something like 'mySum-54657651321987' I do understand the basic idea, but is why only one half of work_index is hashed? Is it important to hash only part of it leaving the suffix out? Would it be wrong to do md5('%s-%d' % (sum_name, index)) so that the hash would be like '6gw8....hq6' ? I'm Java guy so I would use md5 to hash, which means I get id like 'mySum' + 32 characters. (Obviously I want my ids/keys to be as short as possible here.) If I could hash the whole string my id would be just 32 chars. Or would you suggest to use something else to do the hashing with?

  How would one go about writing a query that selects items 2000-2010 out of a collection of 10000 objects in the data store. I know that it can be done like this in GQL: select * from MyObject limit 10 offset 2000 According to the documentation, when using an offset the engine will still fetch all the rows, only not return them, thus making the query perform in a way that corresponds linearly with the value of offset. Is there any better way? Such as using a pseudo ROWNUM column like one could do in other types of data stores.

• C++ defines for a 'better' Release mode build in VS

  I currently use the following preprocessor defines, and various optimization settings: WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN VC_EXTRALEAN NOMINMAX _CRT_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS _SCL_SECURE_NO_WARNINGS _SECURE_SCL=0 _HAS_ITERATOR_DEBUGGING=0 My question is what other things do fellow SOers use, add, define, in order to get a Release Mode build from VS C++ (2008,2010) to be as performant as possible? btw, I've tried PGO etc, it does help a bit but nothing that comes to parity, also I'm not using streams, the C++ i'm talking about its more like C but making use of templates and STL algorithms. As it stands now very simple code segments flop when compared to what GCC produces on say an equivalent x86 machine running linux (2.6+ kernel) using 02. Side-Note: I believe a lot of the issues relate directly to the STL version (Dinkum) provided by MS. Could people please elaborate on experiences using STLPort etc with VS C++.

• NHibernate - is property lazy loading possible?

  I've got some binary data that I store and was going to separate this out into a separate table so it could be lazy loaded. However, i then came across this post by Ayende (http://ayende.com/Blog/archive/2010/01/27/nhibernate-new-feature-lazy-properties.aspx) which suggests that property lazy loading is now possible. I have added the lazy="true" attribute to my property mapping but the field is still loaded from the database (I am using a simple text field to test). My query: return _session.CreateQuery("from Product") .SetMaxResults(1) .UniqueResult<Product>(); Mapping: <property name="Description" type="string" column="FullDescription" lazy="true"/> Has anyone been able to get this working? Personally I prefer this approach than having to add another table to my database.

• ASP.net SessionState Error in Design Mode

  I'm getting a weird error in the design view for a user creation page for 2 controls: Error Creating Control - wCreateUser Session state can only be used when enableSessionState is set to true, either in a configuration file or in the Page directive. (There's some more) I've done both of these, but I'm still getting the error in design mode. The controls work fine when compiled, and on the live site - this is just in the Visual Web Developer 2010 Design view for the page. Any ideas as to how I can resolve this? Thanks!

  Is VS2010, I analyzed my code and got this error: Warning 64 CA1050 : Microsoft.Design : 'ApplicationVariables' should be declared inside a namespace. C:\My\Code\BESI\BESI\App_Code\ApplicationVariables.vb 10 C:\...\BESI\ Here is some reference info on the error. Essentially, I tried to create a class to be used to access data in the Application object in a typed way. The warning message said unless I put my (ApplicationVariables) class in a Namespace, that I wouldn't be able to use it. But I am using it, so what gives? Also, here is a link to another StackOverflow article that talks about how to disable this warning in VS2008, but how would you disable it for 2010? There is no GlobalSuppressions.vb file for VS2010.   I have a button which when pressed, sets the user's rights in the db. (If Administrator UserTypeID is set to '2' and if Customer it is set to '1'). • ASP.NET and Winforms: What PDF reporting tools are out there and recommended?

  I have ActiveReports for .Net which is a great tool, however the version I have is not going to support Visual Studio 2010. Active Reports quite pricey, so just wondering if there are any better alternatives out there at a competitive price or even open source, before I consider upgrading. I am looking for a reporting tool specifically, that has a designer and is programmable etc, not looking for something that can just produce PDF, eg iTextSharp etc. Output will primarily be PDF for web and windows applications. Using various databases, SQL Server, SQL Server Express, Azure and SQLite, so not sure SQL Server reporting services will work for all these cases. All coments appreciated.

• Initiate a PHP class where class name is a variable

  I need some help with an error I have not encountered before and can't seem to find anywhere. In a PHP mvc framework (just from a tutorial) I have the following: // Initiate the class $className = 'Controller_' . ucfirst($controller); if (class_exists($className)) { $controller = new $className($this->registry); } $className is showing the correct class name (case is also correct). But when I run it I get this in the apache error log (no php error) [Wed Mar 31 10:34:12 2010] [notice] child pid 987 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) Process id is different on every call. I am running PHP 5.3.0 on os x 10.6. This site seems to work on 5.2.11 on another Mac. Not really sure where to go next to debug it. I guess it could be an apache setting as much as a php bug or a problem with the code... any suggestions on where to look next?

• jQuery UI - Datepicker - Hide year

  Hi, I'm using jQuery UI 1.8 and I would like to hide the year from the user in both the popup and the textbox. Essentially instead of picking the day, month and year I want the user to just pick the day and month. Hiding the year in the textbox is easy enough, the code shown below will do that. • Adding WCF service reference adds DataContract types too

  Hi everybody, I've used Visual Studio's Add Service Reference feature to add a service (actually it is a workflow service, created in WF4 RC1, but I don't think this makes any difference), and it also added the DataContracts that the service uses. At first this seemed fine, because All I've had in the DataContracts was simply properties, with no implementations. But now I've added code in the constructor of one data contracts that initializes creates an instance of one of the properties that exposes a list of other DCs, and when I've updated the service reference via VS (2010 RC1), the implementation was not updated. What should I do? Should I use my DCs instead of the ones created by VS or should I use the ones VS created? I've noticed that the properties in the VS-generated DCs contain some additional logic for checking equality in the setters and they also implement some interfaces too (like IExtensibleDataObject and INotifyPropertyChanged) which might get handy I guess in the future (I'm not knowledgeable at WCF).   I have the following (simplified) models: class Donation(models.Model): entry_date = models.DateTimeField() class Category(models.Model): name = models.CharField() class Item(models.Model): donation = models.ForeignKey(Donation) category = models.ForeignKey(Category) I'm trying to display the total number of items, per category, grouped by the donation year. I've tried this: Donation.objects.extra(select={'year': "django_date_trunc('year', %s.entry_date)" % Donation._meta.db_table}).values('year', 'item__category__name').annotate(items=Sum('item__quantity')) But I get a Field Error on item__category__name. I've also tried: Item.objects.extra(select={"year": "django_date_trunc('year', entry_date)"}, tables=["donations_donation"]).values("year", "category__name").annotate(items=Sum("quantity")).order_by() Which generally gets me what I want, but the item quantity count is multiplied by the number of donation records. Any ideas? Basically I want to display this: 2010 - Category 1: 10 items - Category 2: 17 items 2009 - Category 1: 5 items - Category 3: 8 items

• How to customize OOTB workflow emails

  How can I make simple format-type customizations to ALL OOTB workflow related emails? I have found that many pre-Sharepoint 2010 posts indicated that OOTB workflow emails are in fact 'alerts', and therefore OOTB workflow emails could be customized using the same technique which is: making a customized version of alerttemplates.xml and even using IAlertNotifyHandler to intercept all alert emails. However, it seems that OOTB workflow and workflow task emails are not affected by changes to my customalerttemplates.xml file (which I do follow with stsadm updatealerttemplates, iisreset, and timer service restart).
