• How to benchmark apache/nginx setup

  I am planning to setup nginx as reverse proxy. I will have apache to deliver my dynamic content, and nginx will deliver the static content. My configuration i have now is just Apache with fastCGI. This gives me no configuration problems and runs great. After I have set up nginx I want to run some benchmarks to see if I really got some performance increases, else i will switch back. Does anyone know how I can benchmark this type of setup? Or maybe someone did this already and have some canned results, I will be glad to hear them. PS. I know this is more a serverfault type of question, but i have seen numerous posts about apache and nginx so i thought i give it a try

• How can I detect client-side when a page load is the result of an AJAX history point?

  I'm trying to prevent a "flicker" effect that is occurring on my ASP.NET page which occurs when a user navigates to the page via the browser back button after having navigated away from it. The reason for the flicker is that I'm using an Update Panel which has some content in there on the initial page-load. As a result, when the page is loaded via a back button that initial content is shown very briefly before it is updated with the correct History-aware data. In order to overcome this I am intending on having the updatepanel hidden (display: none) on inital page load and then show it as long as we don't have any history to deal with. The problem is that I can't find out what to check to determine if there's any history. I can see that the Sys.Application has a _history member but when I'm checking it on page init it is null each time. Does anyone know what I should be checking to determine if there's history to deal with for a page load client-side? And at what point to do it?

• Best practice to pass a value from pop over control on iPad.

  It is an iPad app based on SDK 3.2. I have a MainUIView, that is subclass from UIView, it have a UIButton and a UILabel. When user press the UIButton, the pop over control will be appeared with a table view. When the user select a cell from the table view, the UILabel changes content base on the user click, and the pop up table view will disappear. The question is, how can I pass the "selected cell" to the UILabel. I am thinking making a "middle man" object. When the user click the UIButton, and the "middle man" will pass to the table. When the cell is selected, the "middle man" will store the idx, and call the UILabel change content from the value of "middle man". But I think it is pretty complex to implement, is there any easier way to implement it? thz u.

When sumNumbers is run and a < 10, it will throw immediatly an exception (although it doesn't seem to be very descriptive): Exception in thread "main" org.jmlspecs.jmlrac.runtime.JMLInternalNormalPostconditionError: by method MainClass.sumNumbers at MainClass.sumNumbers(MainClass.java:500) at MainClass.internal$main(MainClass.java:9) at MainClass.main(MainClass.java:286) or... Throw an exception. The exception can be as descriptive as I want. I'd also to check in the end of the function to see whenever the post conditions are true or not. Which would you use here and why?

• problem showing pictures stored outside web root folder

  On a website users can upload pictures. For security reasons these are stored outside the webroot (public_html) folder. Question: is there a way to send the picture or picture data to the user, without the server first having to load the picture (obviously with the picture still being stored outside the webroot folder)? • Trim "Minify" inline css at runtime, expand it at edit time.

  My custom WP theme has a text block in the theme options panel that allows the user to create and maintain a custom css block that is applied to the site template at runtime. I would like to trim or "minify" this content before its stored in the database, but retain all the whitespace when its presented back to the user for editing. Would this be possible? For example, if the user has entered the following as their custom css code... .red {color:red;} .green {color:green;} .blue {color:blue;} Then I would like to store it in the database as: .red{color:red;}.green{color:green;}.blue{color:blue;} But still display it as it was input (ie, retain all the white space and line breaks) when the user is editing the content via my theme options panel.

  Hi I am doing Silverlight 4 In my database, I have a store procedure(having two parameters) which returns rows (with extra fields). So i have to make a complex type for those rows on my Models. And Making a service to call that function import store procedure. The RIA will automatically create a matching Entity(to the complex type) and an operation for me. However, I don't know how to validation the parameters of the operation on both client and server side. For example, the parameter must be an integer only (and greater than 10) or datetime only. below is my xaml code. • Run jquery image resizer after image is appended.

  Hi all, I am using this jQuery plugin to re-size images. http://hirdet2.extra.hu/kepresize/ . $(document).ready(function(){ $('#content img').kepresize({maxWidth: 200,maxHeight: 150}); .... .... $('#content').append('<img src="pathtofile"/>'); }); However, these images are only being appended after the document loads, depending on the users actions. Therefore the appended images are not being re-sized. I have had a play around with .live() but can't seem to get it right. Any help would be much appreciated.

• What is the best workaround for the WCF client `using` block issue?

  I like instantiating my WCF service clients within a using block as it's pretty much the standard way to use resources that implement IDisposable: using (var client = new SomeWCFServiceClient()) { //Do something with the client } But, as noted in this MSDN article, wrapping a WCF client in a using block could mask any errors that result in the client being left in a faulted state (like a timeout or communication problem). Long story short, when Dispose() is called, the client's Close() method fires, but throws and error because it's in a faulted state. The original exception is then masked by the second exception. Not good. The suggested workaround in the MSDN article is to completely avoid using a using block, and to instead instantiate your clients and use them something like this: try { ... client.Close(); } catch (CommunicationException e) { ... client.Abort(); } catch (TimeoutException e) { ... client.Abort(); } catch (Exception e) { ... client.Abort(); throw; } Compared to the using block, I think that's ugly. And a lot of code to write each time you need a client. Luckily, I found a few other workarounds, such as this one on IServiceOriented. You start with: public delegate void UseServiceDelegate<T>(T proxy); public static class Service<T> { public static ChannelFactory<T> _channelFactory = new ChannelFactory<T>(""); public static void Use(UseServiceDelegate<T> codeBlock) { IClientChannel proxy = (IClientChannel)_channelFactory.CreateChannel(); bool success = false; try { codeBlock((T)proxy); proxy.Close(); success = true; } finally { if (!success) { proxy.Abort(); } } } } Which then allows: Service<IOrderService>.Use(orderService => { orderService.PlaceOrder(request); } That's not bad, but I don't think it's as expressive and easily understandable as the using block. The workaround I'm currently trying to use I first read about on blog.davidbarret.net. Basically you override the client's Dispose() method wherever you use it. Something like: public partial class SomeWCFServiceClient : IDisposable { void IDisposable.Dispose() { if (this.State == CommunicationState.Faulted) { this.Abort(); } else { this.Close(); } } } This appears to be able to allow the using block again without the danger of masking a faulted state exception. So, are there any other gotchas I have to look out for using these workarounds? Has anybody come up with anything better?

  I have 2 div's contained in a third. One of the contained div's is floated left, the other floated right. I would like the 2 sibling div's to always be at the same height, but am having a problem with this. So far I am only viewing the page in Firefox, and figured I'd worry about any cross-browser issues after I get it working in at least one browser. In an example I tried, Firefox said the computed style height of the #main-container was 804px, the computed style height of the #left-div was 800px, and the computed style height of the #right-div was 586.2px, as it had expanded to fit it's own content. I understand I might be going about this the wrong way, and if this is a duplicate questions then I apologize, but I wasn't quite sure what to search under.

• Loop through text nodes inside a div

  I am trying to do a text replace, but to do so, i need to loop through the text nodes of a div. Each Div upon clicking, loads via ajax it's appropriate content. But then I need to do text-replacing inside any of the text nodes inside there. My current code, after loading the ajax content, loops through all text nodes of the whole page, and therefore is too resource intensive. I have been looking for hours trying to find out how to both loop thru a div, and get the text nodes... and this has to work in firefox, google chrome and ie6. Any thoughts or suggestions?

This application periodically has updates (.xpi with new version). When my application is updating it does next: Remove folder and content [FF_inst_dir]\extensions\MyExtension Copy new my.xpi to [FF_inst_dir]\extensions However, when I restart FF I see: FF ask me about install add-on. I agree. FF remove my.xpi (it's ok) FF remove folder and content [FF_inst_dir]\extensions\MyExtension I think that FF try to remove old plugin. Thus, I havn't installed plugin. How it can be installed correct?

  My web application requires functionality where end users can upload content, that can be later downloaded or viewed by others, the problem with current scheme is If I create such folder as part of your web project under webapps, every time I do deploy your web application (*.war), the content of that directory will be lost (or overridden). I think the best way to accomplish that is to create folder outside of standard tomcat webapps and access it from there, not sure how to do. Please point in correct direction. • How to imitate focus on a div element?

  The scenario involves imitating a drop down list. Instead of the standard input select element, we're using a set of custom images in combination with a few CSS styles and jQuery behaviors. All in all, we have a drop down list that works just fine. The question revolves around a drop down list losing focus. A normal select element losing focus would automatically close the list, however, since we are using a set of divs, it's not possibly to set or lose focus(and subsequently hide the list). We've been able to imitate normal drop down behavior by hiding a text input behind the div and setting the focus to it dynamically. For example: User clicks drop down list - content list is displayed and hidden text input is set as focus. Event is bound to the text input losing focus which hides the content list. I'm curious if the community has a better approach to hiding a div when a user clicks off, presses escape, etc.

  To improve stemming we want to switch from the default analyzer to snowball, however, having a lot of difficulty with the proper settings and would appreciate any help.   HI Can any one suggest me how bind viewmodel to a usercontrol.. Also please share different way of doing that.. I have added viewmodel and view into my xaml file in namespace and in the user control resource tag.. i have defined a data template with data type as the viewmodel wh i have wrote.. inside that i have added my view (i mean the same usercontrol ih which im editing now is it possible -- please let me know).. I have used content control with content={Binding}.. and contenttemplate as a datatemplate.. in that i have reffered the property which i want to bind from viewmodel).. but its not binding as such.. My query is different ways of binding viewmodel to view in UserControlLibrary Project ?

• Groovy MetaClass - Add category methods to appropriate metaClasses

  I have several categories that I use in my Grails plugin. e.g., class Foo { static foo(ClassA a,Object someArg) { ... } static bar(ClassB b,Object... someArgs) { ... } } I'm looking for the best way to add these methods to the meta-classes so that I don't have to use the category classes and can just invoke them as instance methods. e.g., aInstance.foo(someArg) bInstance.bar(someArgs) Is there a Groovy/Grails class or method that will help me do this or am I stuck iterating through the methods and adding them all myself?

• System.AccessViolation in DllImport method after redeploy

  Hi Everyone, My environment: Windows 2003, VS 2008, .NET 3.5 C# .NET application. During loading my application I call method from C++ dll (Knowl.dll) through my third-party dll library (Common.dll) written in C#. After first deploy (from VS to Developing server) evrything works fine. Then I stops Developing Server, doesn't any changes in code and redeploy. Throws AccessViolationException on this imported method. What is it? On second and after redeplies - the same error. Only after deletin source code and recheckout it from CVS I can normally start server.
