• Thunderbird is preferred mail app, messaging menu still loads evolution [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Is there a way to add Mozilla Thunderbird to the messaging menu? Hi, After installing ubuntu I setup my email in evolution, which is fine but on balance I prefer Thunderbird so I installed and set that up. Under preferred applications I have set the mail to Thunderbird, but when I click on the icon in the top right (the mail envelope) and select mail it still loads evolution. Is there a way to switch this to Thunderbird?

• Have you used the ExecutionValue and ExecValueVariable properties?

  The ExecutionValue execution value property and it’s friend ExecValueVariable are a much undervalued feature of SSIS, and many people I talk to are not even aware of their existence, so I thought I’d try and raise their profile a bit. The ExecutionValue property is defined on the base object Task, so all tasks have it available, but it is up to the task developer to do something useful with it. The basic idea behind it is that it allows the task to return something useful and interesting about what it has performed, in addition to the standard success or failure result. The best example perhaps is the Execute SQL Task which uses the ExecutionValue property to return the number of rows affected by the SQL statement(s). This is a very useful feature, something people often want to capture into a variable, and start using the result set options to do. Unfortunately we cannot read the value of a task property at runtime from within a SSIS package, so the ExecutionValue property on its own is a bit of a let down, but enter the ExecValueVariable and we have the perfect marriage. The ExecValueVariable is another property exposed through the task (TaskHost), which lets us select a SSIS package variable. What happens now is that when the task sets the ExecutionValue, the interesting value is copied into the variable we set on the ExecValueVariable property, and a variable is something we can access and do something with. So put simply if the ExecutionValue property value is of interest, make sure you create yourself a package variable and set the name as the ExecValueVariable. Have  look at the 3 step guide below: 1 Configure your task as normal, for example the Execute SQL Task, which here calls a stored procedure to do some updates. 2 Create variable of a suitable type to match the ExecutionValue, an integer is used to match the result we want to capture, the number of rows. 3 Set the ExecValueVariable for the task, just select the variable we created in step 2. You need to do this in Properties grid for the task (Short-cut key, select the task and press F4) Now when we execute the sample task above, our variable UpdateQueueRowCount will get the number of rows we updated in our Execute SQL Task. I’ve tried to collate a list of tasks that return something useful via the ExecutionValue and ExecValueVariable mechanism, but the documentation isn’t always great. Task ExecutionValue Description Execute SQL Task Returns the number of rows affected by the SQL statement or statements. File System Task Returns the number of successful operations performed by the task. File Watcher Task Returns the full path of the file found Transfer Error Messages Task Returns the number of error messages that have been transferred Transfer Jobs Task Returns the number of jobs that are transferred Transfer Logins Task Returns the number of logins transferred Transfer Master Stored Procedures Task Returns the number of stored procedures transferred Transfer SQL Server Objects Task Returns the number of objects transferred WMI Data Reader Task Returns an object that contains the results of the task. Not exactly clear, but I assume it depends on the WMI query used.

• Documenting your database with Visual Studio 2012 SSDT tools

  The title of this post is interesting and something I am wishing you and your colleagues had a better way to do. I understand as I am asked this question frequently. I couple of weeks ago I was asked the same question by a customer who documents their database using the ApexSQL Doc tools which uses the extended properties on objects to create automated documentation. I thought that was super interesting and went down the path to see how we could could support the creation of this documentation while leveraging the Visual Studio 2012 SSDT Tools. What I found is was rather intriguing. There is a property called “Description” on all objects in the SSDT tools. This property is rather subtle and I am betting overlooked. To be honest, this property has probably been there for a while and I just never discovered it. Adding text to this '”Description” property it allows Visual Studio to create the commands for the extended properties directly to your schema which should be version controlled. As I did more digging there seemed to be extended properties at every level in the SQL database objects. This fills some rather challenging gaps and allows organizations to manage SQL Schema using the Visual Studio SQL database tools while allowing a way to automatically document the database. This will also work in the automation of the creation and alter scripts that can be generated as part f an automated build system. Now we essentially get a way to store, build and document the database in a nice little ALM package. Happy Coding!

• Printing the second page from a Calc sheet

  I've created a simple invoice document in LibreOffice Calc and it consists of 2 pages. I have defined the print range for my document as: $A$1:$D$33,$D$34:$D$35 My first page holds the actual invoice information the second page is a single merged cell holding terms and conditions text (wrapped to the cell width). The second page is defined by a row break. When I export the sheet as a PDF the first page comes out great but the second page with the terms text is all wrong. On the left hand side I see a portion of text (looks like a single column) and when I select the text inside the PDF I can see it go of the page somewhere to the left. I get the same result in a print preview. I'm at a complete loss on how to approach this problem and any insight is much appreciated.

Problem lies in the fact that css formats the table in HTML while in Word document they are left with horrible looking borders, that need to be invisible. It would take extensive amounts of time to make each tables borders invisible. Is there a way to make all borders of every table in document invisible?

• Parallel MSBuild FTW - Build faster in parallel

  Hey everyone, I just discovered this great post yesterday that shows how to have msbuild build projects in parallel Basically all you need to do is pass the switches “/m:[NumOfCPUsToUse] /p:BuildInParallel=true” into MSBuild. Example to use 4 cores/processes (If you just pass in “/m” it will use all CPU cores): MSBuild /m:4 /p:BuildInParallel=true "C:\dev\Client.sln" Obviously this trick will only be useful on PCs with multi-core CPUs (which we should all have by now) and solutions with multiple projects; So there’s no point using it for solutions that only contain one project.  Also, testing shows that using multiple processes does not speed up Team Foundation Database deployments either in case you’re curious Also, I found that if I didn’t explicitly use “/p:BuildInParallel=true” I would get many build errors (even though the MSDN documentation says that it is true by default). The poster boasts compile time improvements up to 59%, but the performance boost you see will vary depending on the solution and its project dependencies.  I tested with building a solution at my office, and here are my results (runs are in seconds): # of Processes 1st Run 2nd Run 3rd Run Avg Performance 1 192 195 200 195.67 100% 2 155 156 156 155.67 79.56% 4 146 149 146 147.00 75.13% 8 136 136 138 136.67 69.85%   So I updated all of our build scripts to build using 2 cores (~20% speed boost), since that gives us the biggest bang for our buck on our solution without bogging down a machine, and developers may sometimes compile more than 1 solution at a time.  I’ve put the any-PC-safe batch script code at the bottom of this post. The poster also has a follow-up post showing how to add a button and keyboard shortcut to the Visual Studio IDE to have VS build in parallel as well (so you don’t have to use a build script); if you do this make sure you use the .Net 4.0 MSBuild, not the 3.5 one that he shows in the screenshot.  While this did work for me, I found it left an MSBuild.exe process always hanging around afterwards for some reason, so watch out (batch file doesn’t have this problem though).  Also, you do get build output, but it may not be the same that you’re used to, and it doesn’t say “Build succeeded” in the status bar when completed, so I chose to not make this my default Visual Studio build option, but you may still want to. • Saving a compressed text attachment results in empty file

  I have a text document with compressed text in it, the text is auto generated by a program. The text document is fine on my machine (Vista 32-bit), and can be used normally. The other person can also create and use these files just fine. (XP 32-bit) However when I email it to someone else (Outlook 2003 on both machines) the attachment is sent fine (5kb) but when the other person tries to save it somewhere, the saved file is empty. (64b) At first I thought Outlook didn't like compressed text files (security risk maybe?), but I can receive the text files just fine. Is there a setting somewhere on the other persons machine that tells Outlook not to trust compressed text? Can anyone think of a reason why these files are being saved as empty text documents?

  I am having the issue, where, I have 2 folders called "My Documents". I recently edited my registry to make "Document" link in the Windows 7 start menu be a FOLDER link and not a LIBRARY link..   I am a 6th year medical student and I'm working on my thesis. I have no experience with programming whatsoever, a friend recommended me to post my question here. I am strugling with the following problem: I have data of 400 patients, stored in 400 different excel files. Each file contains 34 columns in a specific order, let's say A to Z. The order is the same in each of these 400 files. Now I need to a make a new excel document that contains the first column of each patient. So I need all the first columns of my 400 different excel files, lined up next to each other in a new document. Preferebally in the form of a automatic script. After that I want to do the exact same thing but for the second column, then the third and so on. This is probably a problem that has already been solved. Otherwise could someone help me out?   In October 2011 the premier support for Sun Cluster 3.1 ended. See details in Oracle Lifetime Support Policy for Oracle and Sun System Software document. There no 'Extended Support' and the 'Sustaining Support Ends' is indefinite. But for indefinite 'Sustaining Support' I like to point out from the mentioned document (version Sept. 2011) on page 5: Sustaining Support does NOT include: * New program updates, fixes, security alerts, general maintenance releases, selected functionality releases and documentation updates or upgrade tools * Certification with most new third-party products/versions and most new Oracle products * 24 hour commitment and response guidelines for Severity 1 service requests *Previously released fixes or updates that Oracle no longer supports This means Solaris 10 9/10 update9 is the last qualified release for Sun Cluster 3.1. So, Sun Cluster 3.1 is not qualified on Solaris 10 8/11 Update10. Furthermore there is an issue around with SVM patch 145899-06 or higher. This SVM patch is part of Solaris 10 8/11 Update10. The 145899-06 is the first released patch of this number, therefore the support for Sun Cluster 3.1 ends with the previous SVM patches 144622-01 and 139967-02. For details about the known problem with SVM patch 145899-06 please refer to doc 1378828.1. Further this means you should freeze (no patching, no upgrade) your Sun Cluster 3.1 configuration not later than Solaris 10 9/10 update9. Or even better plan an upgrade to Solaris Cluster 3.3 now to get back to full support.

  I communicate with the client using various tools such as MS Outlook,Mailing through Google/ Yahoo accounts, sending Word or Excel documents as attachments through this mail. What I am looking at is there any tool which will help me in binding all these documents so that I may be able to virtually bind all these documents of a particular client. For example all these documents were sent to Client A 2 Outlook mails without attachment 2 Web mails with MS-Word attachment 1 Web Mail with Excel attachment Now I wish I had a document which would bind the Outlook mail bodies as text files MS-Word documents Excel document Previous versions of MS-Office had Office Binder. Is there something similar to this Thanx.

• Computer prints blank pages before and after content

  This would seem like a pretty simple question but I have exhausted every idea I can come up with. I bought a brand new Dell Latitude E5410 not too long ago with Windows 7 OS. I installed office 2010 on the machine right away and have had a printing problem since day one. For some reason every time I print a page, a blank page prints out before and after the content print. This also applies to any other application such as notepad or printing an email. If I have a 6 page document, it still prints out one page before and after every content page. Meaning I get my 6 page document along with 12 blank pages. I can't figure out why this would be some sort of default setting or what would cause this printing configuration. I am the only computer on the network that has this problem and quite frankly I'm getting tired of it. Can anyone help me figure this out or steer me in the right direction to correcting this problem?

• How to install Hadoop?

  I am trying to install Hadoop in Ubuntu 12.04 version. Following the instructions from http://michael-noll.com/tutorials/running-hadoop-on-ubuntu-linux-single-node-cluster/, I installed java-6-openjdk from Ubuntu software-center. I have set java_home in .bashrc. Also set java_home in Hadoop conf/env.sh. While formatting the namenode, I am getting the following error: usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/java no such file or directory. Thank you. But it's a 64bit OS.

• Create a folder shortcut/redirection in Vista

  Given a plain old directory of files in Windows Vista, say "C:\OldFolder\", is it possible to move the contents of that directory to a new location, perhaps "F:\NewFolder\" and keep a shortcut-like 'virtual' folder at C:\OldFolder that will always redirect access to the updated location. Shortcuts work for users accessing through the GUI to some extent, but all application links to the old location won't work anymore even with a shortcut. For example, If MS Word tried to access C:\OldFolder\document.doc I would want Windows to simply rewrite it's request to F:\NewFolder\document.doc... I guess I'm basically looking for Apache's Mod_Rewrite for Windows Vista... any suggestions?

• What layer to introduce human readable error messages?

  One of the things that I have never been happy with on any project I have worked on over the years and have really not been able to resolve myself is exactly at what tier in an application should human readable error information be retrieved for display to a user. A common approach that has worked well has been to return strongly typed/concrete "result objects" from the methods on the public surface of the business tier/API. A method on the interface may be: public ClearUserAccountsResult ClearUserAccounts(ClearUserAccountsParam param); And the result class implementation: public class ClearUserAccountsResult : IResult { public readonly List<Account> ClearedAccounts{get; set;} public readonly bool Success {get; set;} // Implements IResult public readonly string Message{get; set;} // Implements IResult, human readable // Constructor implemented here to set readonly properties... } This works great when the API needs to be exposed over WCF as the result object can be serialized. Again this is only done on the public surface of the API/business tier. The error message can also be looked up from the database, which means it can be changed and localized. However, it has always been suspect to me, this idea of returning human readable information from the business tier like this, partly because what constitutes the public surface of the API may change over time...and it may be the case that the API will need to be reused by other API components in the future that do not need the human readable string messages (and looking them up from a database would be an expensive waste). I am thinking a better approach is to keep the business objects free from such result objects and keep them simple and then retrieve human readable error strings somewhere closer to the UI layer or only in the UI itself, but I have two problems here: 1) The UI may be a remote client (Winforms/WPF/Silverlight) or an ASP.NET web application hosted on another server. In these cases the UI will have to fetch the error strings from the server. 2) Often there are multiple legitimate modes of failure. If the business tier becomes so vague and generic in the way it returns errors there may not be enough information exposed publicly to tell what the error actually was: i.e: if a method has 3 modes of legitimate failure but returns a boolean to indicate failure, you cannot work out what the appropriate message to display to the user should be. I have thought about using failure enums as a substitute, they can indicate a specific error that can be tested for and coded against. This is sometimes useful within the business tier itself as a way of passing via method returns the specifics of a failure rather than just a boolean, but it is not so good for serialization scenarios. Is there a well worn pattern for this? What do people think? Thanks.
