• Sporadic '.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored' going from OSX -> Linux

  Every now and then when users SSH from their OS X (Snow Leopard) workstation to one of our Linux hosts they receive the message: /usr/bin/xauth: ~/.Xauthority not writable, changes will be ignored Of course, their X forwarded applications will not work at this point. However, if they log out and log right back in again they do not get the message and everything works as expected. On their Mac they get their home directory via AFP. The Linux machines get it via NFS. Any ideas on what could be going on here?

• Passwords and Keys in Linux

  In a fit of desperation when I had my wireless connection die on me, I thought it was a problem with the key I had created at the start when I initially configured the wireless connection and hence deleted it. The option to create the key had presented itself when I created the wireless connection. It no longer asks me to. Now I am back online, do I have re-create the password and key I had before? If so, what do I choose and why? The options I have are as follows; PGP Stored password Password keyring Secure shell key The first and last option seem to be obvious and I have no idea about the differences between the second and third options. Why do I need a stored password or password keyring in all scenarios and not just the wireless issue I ran into? EDIT 0 Further to Belisama's comment, I have amended my question. • Use pt-table-sync to setup a new MySQL DB

  I have 2 hosts (A and B). B contains a MySQL server with a database called mydb, and A contains a MySQL server with nothing (fresh install). I want to replicate the entire mydb from B to A, by running a script on A (I do not have shell access to B). Can I run this on A: pt-table-sync --execute h=b.mydomain.com,D=mydb h=a.mydomain.com I've read the docs but don't get a 100% comfort feeling (perhaps because of all the warnings about damaging your data if you don't know what you're doing). Will this work? as well, is h=a.mydomin.com necessary? (Will it route all traffic back in/out the local NIC?) can I use localhost or nothing at all?

Please help.” Solution Honestly, it is pretty simple to reset the password for SA username. You just have to login to the system where your SQL Server is installed. Open SQL Server Management Studio and login with the help of Windows Authentication. As local system is the admin of the SQL Server, you will get access with administration privileges. Now, open the database, expand Security >> Login folder and right click over SA username. Now, it will bring up the screen where you can change the password for SA. • Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1, now available for download

  Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is now available for general download for almost a week now.  The Beta of SP1 came couple of months back and it did a lot of performance enhancements, added support for HTML5 tags and few other stuff related to web development.  Now, the final release of SP1 is available.  The good part is that, if you had installed the SP1 beta, you don’t have to remove the Beta and start all over again.  You can apply the final release on top of the Beta and it works like a charm. So, in simplified terms, what is new in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Before I start listing it down, I was checking if there was an MSDN article available on this and found http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg442059.aspx  While it reads (Beta), the same holds good for the release candidate as well.  Unlike VS 2008 SP1 and .NET 3.5 SP1 (which came together), this release doesn’t add any new project templates/item templates. However, there are lot of enhancements related to Web Deployment, Debugging and Unit Testing for .NET 3.5 applications. So, how does one find if you are running the correct version of SP1 final release. • How do I stop apps trying to use a dial-up connection?

  Every now and again, I might have to use a dial-up internet connection via another tethered phone, i.e. Bluetooth connection to the GPRS modem. Now I am back on 'ops normal', i.e. using a shared internet connection on my own phone, or on my 3G stick, but some apps, especially IE9, keep popping up a 'dialup connection' dialogue, which I cannot dismiss enough times ever, to make to stay away. How can I tell these idiot applications that I no longer need a dial-up connection?

• Wubi doens't work anymore - shows 'No wubildr' error

  Basics: HP Mini 311 Ubuntu netbook edition 10.04 (installed via Wubi) Symptoms: I load to Windows Boot Manager as usual. Options are Windows 7 and Ubuntu Netbook, like usual. Selecting Windows 7 does as it should. Loading Ubuntu Netbook, though, does not take me to the usual screen where it lets me select versions of Ubuntu (sorry for bad wording, not sure what the real name is called; it's where you select from about 6 items; I always picked the first due to lack of knowledge without issue). Instead it flashes an error in white on a black screen then restarts very quickly. It took me a few restarts, but here is the error: Try (hd0,0): NTSF5 No wubildr Try (hd0,1): NTSF5: Situation: I have no clue what caused it. The only thing I did last night on Ubuntu was install Skype, but the mic didn't work instantly so I got lazy and switched to Windows 7 and used Skype on there. When I tried to switch back to Ubuntu it began this. (There may be something I forget... it was 5 in the morning). There were no recent updates that I remember. No weird activity. Just... random. Help please?

• How to deal with OpenGL and Fullscreen on OS X

  I do most of my development on OS X and for my current game project this is my target environment. However when I play games I play on Windows. As a windows gamer I am used to Alt+Tab switching from within the game to the last application that was open. On OS X I currently can't find either a game that supports that nor can I find a way to make it possible. My current project is based on SDL 1.3 and I can see that cmd+tab is a sequence that is sent directly to my application and not intercepted by the operating system. Now my first attempt was to hide the rendering window on cmd+tab which certainly works, but has the disadvantage that a hidden OpenGL window in SDL cannot be restored when the user tabs back to the application. First of all, there is no event fired for that or I can't find it, secondly the core problem is that when that application window is hidden, my game is still the active application, just that the window disappeared. That is incredible annoying. Any ideas how to approximate the windows / linux behavior for alt+tab?

• Why do the IP addresses randomly change?

  I have a network with the following: Cable modem with static IP address Router Desktop - Win 7 VM Host - VMware ESXi 4.0 A couple of VM Guests - Windows Every now and then my Win 7 PC is unable to access some of the VMs. When I ping the VMs by their domain name their IP address shows up as the IP address of the cable modem. Sometimes I can fix it by running ipconfig /flushdns. The IP address will reset back to what it was supposed to be, but occasionally it wont work. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

• resolv.conf doesn't get set on reboot when networking is configured for static ip

  I'm experiencing, what appears to be a hostname resolution issue in ubuntu 12.04 server edition when configuring my computer to use a static ip. In /etc/network/interfaces: # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.28 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 Running $ sudo apt-get upgrade, results in a 'Failed to fetch...': . . . W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en_US Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. When I change my /etc/network/interfaces to: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp Everything works fine. Looking into /etc/resolv.conf provides some more hints...In cases where I was getting the resolving issue, resolve.conf was empty. No nameservers were specified. When I changed to dhcp from static and restarted networking. /etc/resolv.conf gets written to: 'nameserver 192.168.1.1'. Switching back from dhcp to static and restarting doesn't remove the nameserve entry. When I restart the system with static set, resolv.conf is empty. When I restart the system with dhcp set, resolv.conf has nameserver 192.168.1.1. So it appears that the issue is that resolve.conf is not getting written to correctly? Which package/code is responsible for writing to resolv.conf? Is there a particular package that I can take a look at open issues? • software RAID array not starting in initramfs on Debian

  One of my Debian servers (kernel 2.6.30-AMD64) refuses to start the software RAID array that houses the root partition in initramfs. It dumps me with a busybox console. When I follow the necessary steps to continue booting it works fine (start the array with mdadm -A and then have LVM scan the volumes with pvscan and then vgchange -ay). I've tried starting with boot options rootdelay=10 to no avail. Also I've updated the initramfs and unpacked it to inspect whether it really tries to assemble the raid array (it does). Output before dumping to console : mount: mounting none on /dev failed: No such device W: devtmpfs not available, falling back to tpmfs for /dev and then some lvm messages saying it can't find the volumes holding the root partitions. Does anybody have a clue how I could fix this?

• Using SharePoint PeoplePicker control in custom ASP.NET pages

  I was developing custom ASP.NET page for a SharePoint project, and the page uses SharePoint PeoplePicker control. I needed to manipulate the control on the client side based on the user inputs. PeoplePicker Picker is a complex control and the difficult bit is that it contains many controls on the page (use the page source viewer to see the HTML tags generated). So getting into the right bit is tricky and also the default JavaScript functions like, control.disabled; control.focus(); will not work with PeoplePicker control.   Dear Friends and Colleagues After 8.5 years with Plumtree/BEA/Oracle, it is time for me to move on to something new and exciting. Tomorrow, May 21, will be my last day with Oracle. Prior to joining Plumtree back in 2001, I had not stayed with any one company for more than two years at a time and I really thought that that might be the case with Plumtree even then. However, 8.5 years later, I can definitely say that it has been a great ride with very few regrets. I have made some fantastic friends and have learned something from each and every one of you. I have definitely considered this to be a rewarding experience and I will miss all of you. I do hope that you will keep in contact. You never know, our paths may cross again in the future.   There are plenty of the things life one can make it simple. I really believe in the same. I was yesterday traveling for community related activity. On airport while returning I met a SQL Enthusiast. He asked me if there is any simple way to find maximum between two numbers in the SQL Server. I asked him back that what he really mean by Simple Way and requested him to demonstrate his code for finding maximum between two numbers. Here is his code: DECLARE @Value1 DECIMAL(5,2) = 9.22 DECLARE @Value2 DECIMAL(5,2) = 8.34 SELECT (0.5 * ((@Value1 + @Value2) + ABS(@Value1 - @Value2))) AS MaxColumn GO I thought his logic was accurate but the same script can be written another way. I quickly wrote following code for him and which worked just fine for him. Here is my code: DECLARE @Value1 DECIMAL(5,2) = 9.22 DECLARE @Value2 DECIMAL(5,2) = 8.34 SELECT CASE WHEN @Value1 > @Value2 THEN @Value1 ELSE @Value2 END AS MaxColumn GO He agreed that my code is much simpler but as per him there is some problem with my code which apparently he does not remember at this time. There are cases when his code will give accurate values and my code will not. I think his comment has value but both of us for the moment could not come up with any valid reason. Do you think any scenario where his code will work and my suggested code will not work? • Several "SideBySide" errors in the event viewer (Windows XP SP3)

  Hi all, For some reason, my netbook continuously comes up with SideBySide errors in the event viewer under Computer Management. Is there some way to get rid of these errors? My netbook occasionally BSODs and looking back into the event viewer after, at least 8 SideBySide errors were logged prior to BSOD. Please help! Thanks in advance. Netbook is a Samsung N120 with upgraded RAM to 2 GB. EDIT: So, SideBySide errors have been resolved and apparently the BSOD isn't related. But I remember specifically, that last time I had a BSOD, it was due to an "unknown hard error." What causes that?

• Using Subversion with SQL Server Management Studio

  I am a member of a team with 3 developers. We have started using Redmine here for project management and issue tracking and LOVE it. I have seen elsewhere how nicely Redmine can work when a back-end repository is set up for a project. There is nice integration all around. This shop is currently .Net and SQL Server 2005. I am thinking about recommending a move to Subversion for our VCS (so that we can integrate with Redmine). I have seen a product called VisualSVN which will make it possible to use Visual Studio with Subversion, so that covers .Net. But the other big question is if it is possible to configure SQL Server Management Studio to somehow use Subversion for its VCS. Has anyone done this? This shop is currently using Sourcegear Fortress.

• $TERM set to "dumb" causes problems with suspend

  I've just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. So far I love it, everything seems just so much snappier. Now I just have one minor issue. When I try to suspend my laptop, it doesn't work - instead it fades out the screen, blocks it and then instantly wakes back. I've checked the logs in /var/log/pm-suspend.log and this fragment seems relevant: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/000kernel-change suspend suspend: success. Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: TERM environment variable not set. /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: Returned exit code 1. Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Inhibit found, will not perform suspend Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Running hooks for resume The mentioned script at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear reads: #!/bin/bash clear When I open a terminal anywhere by hand, $TERM is set to either "linux" or "xterm". However somehow when the 00clear command is executed $TERM is set to "dumb". Two questions: What is the correct value for $TERM when running 00clear script? Where can I set it up? I've looked for solutions on the web, however I could only find information on how to configure $TERM in a regular terminal (and this one is set properly).

• I thought the mac mini server also serves as a wifi router?

  I just bought a snow leopard mac mini server, everything came as a bundle pretty nice. The snow leopard server software preinstalled on the mac mini too. Only thing I'm not sure about is does this also act as a wifi router? In the back of the box it says "airport extreme wireless networking included", I assumed this means that this can act as a wifi router like an aiport extreme? Is this true? If so, how do I do it?

• Dell PR03X port replicator and DisplayPort to DVI adapter not detecting second monitor

  I have a Dell M4400 connected to a PR03X port replicator/docking station. I use the DVI port to connect it to a first Dell 2208WFP monitor and I'm trying to use a DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter to connect it to a second Dell 2208WFP monitor. The second monitor, connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter immediately goes into sleep mode and the laptop doesn't detect it. What is really weird is that it did detect it the first time I plugged it in but after I unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in it stopped working. I swapped the monitors round and it detected them both but after unplugging the monitor connected via the DisplayPort-to-DVI and plugging it in again it stopped working. Both monitors work if plugged in directly to the DVI port. Is there some way to force re-detection? Any ideas?

• How can I determine a cmd.exe's parent process.

  Sometimes I find myself in a cmd.exe environment that itself was started by another cmd.exe or by another console-based application. Now, working in such an environment, I'd like to know what happens if I type exit, that is, if the cmd.exe window will disappear, or if it goes back to the creating cmd.exe or application. This, of course, because sometimes as I work in cmd.exe I am forgetful about how I called it. So, is there a way to find out the parent process (if this is the correct terminus for what I mean) of a cmd.exe within cmd.exe?

• Windows 8 Media Center Pack Install Fails with DoTransmogrify failed due to error 0x80070011

  When I attempt to use Add Features to install the Windows 8 Media Center pack I get the "Something Went Wrong" Message Checking %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Anytime Upgrade\Upgrade.log I can see the following error block 2012-10-27 18:43:13, Error WAU DoTransmogrify failed due to error 0x80070011. 2012-10-27 18:43:13, Error WAU UpgradeSKU failed. Exiting. 2012-10-27 18:43:13, Error WAU The worker process exited unexpectedly 2012-10-27 18:43:13, Error WAU Something went wrong 2012-10-27 18:43:13, Error WAU Close this wizard and try again. My understanding is that 0x80070011 means Error_Not_Same_Device. I think this may be related to the fact that C:\Users is a junction point to D:\Users Do I have to move my users directory back? Is there a workaround?

  Does anyone have any notes for an sysadmin supporting solr? I'm looking for anything that might be useful for monitoring & metrics as well as troubleshooting. Some useful links I have found are: /solr/admin/stats.jsp and /solr/admin/analysis.jsp In the logs I have noticed, other than the query, "hits", "status" and "QTime" values. The documentation on what these mean is sparse at least based on the 100+ websites I have checked. QTime appears to be the query time response in milliseconds. Hits is some form of results but I'm not sure exactly what makes that up and I'm not sure about status. Typically I see status come back as "0" but I have seen other numbers such as "5", so my thoughts that it could be either HTTP status codes or a 0 or 1 (good or bad) methodology isn't accurate. All of the documentation I have come across is intended for developers. Any sysadmin-centric documentation would be a big help.

• How to Upload Really Large Files to SkyDrive, Dropbox, or Email

  Do you need to upload a very large file to store online or email to a friend? Unfortunately, whether you’re emailing a file or using online storage sites like SkyDrive, there’s a limit on the size of files you can use. Here’s how to get around the limits. Skydrive only lets you add files up to 50 MB, and while the Dropbox desktop client lets you add really large files, the web interface has a 300 MB limit, so if you were on another PC and wanted to add giant files to your Dropbox, you’d need to split them. This same technique also works for any file sharing service—even if you were sending files through email. There’s two ways that you can get around the limits—first, by just compressing the files if you’re close to the limit, but the second and more interesting way is to split up the files into smaller chunks.
