• Spanning-tree setup with incompatible switches

  I have a set of eight HP ProCurve 2910al-48G Ethernet switches at my datacenter that are set up in a star topology with no physical loops. I want to partially mesh the switches for redundancy and manage the loops with a spanning-tree protocol. However, our connection to the datacenter is provided by two uplinks, each to a Cisco 3750. The datacenter's switches are handling the redundant connection using PVST spanning-tree, which is a Cisco-proprietary spanning-tree implementation that my HP switches do not support. It appears that my switches are not participating in the datacenter's spanning-tree domain, but are blindly passing the BPDUs between the two switchports on my side, which enables the datacenter's switches to recognize the loop and put one of the uplinks into the Blocking state. This is somewhat supposition, but I can confirm that, while my switches say that both of the uplink ports are forwarding, only one is passing any real quantity of data. (I am assuming that I cannot get the datacenter to move away from PVST. I don't know that I'd want them to make that significant of a change anyway.) And, to be clear, I am passing the tagged VLAN I'm receiving from the datacenter to other ports on other switches in my infrastructure. My question is: how do I configure my switches so that I can use a spanning tree protocol inside my switch infrastructure without breaking the datacenter's spanning tree that I cannot participate in?

• Windows 8: Default start menu to open on second display

  I have two monitors and I want to keep it soley on my second monitor. I can do this manually by opening the start menu from the secondary monitor and by default next time I open the start menu it will open on the second monitor. Is there an option where I can force it to stay on the secondary display. If I restart or accidently open start from the primary monitor it changes the default start menu display monitor to my primary monitor.

• NAS device claims drive in a RAID is degraded but S.M.A.R.T. says it is fine

  I have a Synology DS213 with two 600GB drives in RAID 1. Last night the device reported that my second drive had become degraded and that I should replace it. When I ran a extensive S.M.A.R.T. test the results said that the drive is okay. How can I confirm that the drive is actually bad? Is there any case that the degraded drive is the good one and that it is actually the other drive that is bad?

• DNS and DHCP dies after ~2 days of use on ClearOS

  I'm using ClearOS (based on CentOS, so any info specific to it should apply here) as a gateway, DHCP, and DNS server. I had this server running perfectly for a month or two before replacing it with another server. However due DNS and DHCP failing 2 days in and a host of other performance issues (the box was a little underpowered), I changed back to the origional server. However 2 days in DHCP and DNS are failing again, and I'm out of idea's on why. In both cases to my knowledge no network or server changes occurred after installation. Right after installing (and at least a day in) DNS and DHCP was working just fine. However later (Day 2) I get a call saying their internet is down (translation: Nobody can get to websites because DNS is down) I've tried to fix the problem by checking if the dnsmasq is even running (it is), restarting the service, and restarting the server to no effect. I do have two internal servers that have static DHCP leases but one's lease must of expired as I can't connect to it anymore. I'm hesitant to do any dhcp testing on the last server as I'll not be able to connect to it anymore. Is there anything anyone can think of on why DNS and DHCP would fail 2 days in to running perfectly? More info: Running dnsmasq in debug mode. This is all that's displayed even when running nslookup quackwall. My current strategy is to bzr add files to both repos and then use bzr merge to identify and resolve conflicts.
