• Should I consolidate multiple identical VMs into BSD jails?

  We run a number of Openfire XMPP/Jabber servers. Due to the way Openfire works, we cannot easily run multiple Openfire instances on one server, so I have 5 identical VMware ESXi VMs, each with CentOS, MySQl, Java, and Openfire. They're the exact same, except for their IP addresses, the actual Openfire MySQL database and it's config file. I am wondering if this is the optimal configuration, or if it would be better to move these VMs to a single FreeBSD machine and put each one inside a FreeBSD jail. Specifically, I am wondering if the benefit of VMWare's Transparent Page Sharing (TPS) would outweight the cost of running 5 identical OSes. Would I end up using less memory with one large FreeBSD machine and java running in bsd jails?

• Hosting custom domains with IP address flexibility

  I am building a small service where users will be assigned a subdomain such as: myusername.myservice.com anotheruser.myservice.com I know that I can set up a wildcard vhost and using some configuration regex, serve the files like so: myusername.myservice.com ===> /var/www/myusername anotherusername.myservice.com ===> /var/www/anotherusername The problem is that I would like to allow users to alias their own domain names to their service. I understand that for the webserver, once the user adds the domain via my web interface, I can easily create a vhost for the domain in nginx and then refresh the webserver. The problem is that I would prefer to NOT let the users add an A record of my webserver's IP address as I would prefer to keep things flexible (when we upgrade our infrastructure to something more complex to scale). What is the best way to achieve this?

• Grub options are not visible on booting on Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite running Ubuntu 14.04

  I've managed to install Ubuntu 14.04 on my new Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite ultrabook. After updating some configuratiosn in the UEFI installation was very easy. The only questions and issue I believe I'm still experience is when booting. I believe when the laptop would be displaying the grub boot options I see the following. There is a black screen with a purple border of 10px around the screen. I'd like to know how I can update my system so that I see the grub boot manager.   I'm looking to develop a website and all the work will be done remotely (no local dev server). The reason for this is that my shared hosting company a2hosting has a specific configuration (symfony,mysql,git) that I don't want to spend time duplicating when I can just ssh and develop remotely or through netbeans remote editing features. My question is how can I use git to separate my site into three areas: live, staging and dev.   I am fairly familiar with setting-up IPv4 networks for bigger server configurations, only now I wanted to start familiarizing myself with doing the same for IPv6. I have been Googling for the second night in a row for things like: IPv6 network design, IPv6 for dummies, etc. So far most things you find go on about why IPv6 and the amazing amount of numbers that we have now. Yet I am looking for practical stuff, for example: what would be a good way to assign IP-number, as I understand it DHCP shouldn't be the default course of action. How do other assignment methods work with DNS configuration? what would be a good or standard way of dividing the network in to sub-nets? (database, application, web servers spread over multiple domains/applications and some what intertwined) In short I would like to find good resources with practical information books, webpages, etc.

• Unable to modify variables phpmyadmin via variables tab (Xampp)

  I am quite new to phpmyadmin configuration. I had project where utf8 encoding is needed. What i'm trying to do is to change the variables text/char all into utf8. I changed, yes at that moment the values changed into values I wanted. But then when I terminate Xampp and reenters phpmyadmin page or even refreshing the page, all the values restored to default (original values). My phpmyadmin had default user as root and hadn't been set a password yet. There is also no logout button in phpmyadmin landing page. I had difficult time even to set the server connection collation (hangs indefinitely and never seems can be updated). phpmyadmin version:4.1.6 mysql:5.5.36 (latest version) I doubt this could be due to malformed installation, because same things happened in my other computer too (exactly the same versions). what could be wrong? thanks.

  I want to permanently disable a touchpad in Windows running on my laptop, since firstly, I use a mouse, and secondly, when I work, I often touch it accidentally what causes definite inconviniences. I tried the following approaches to disable it but with no result: Turned it off through BIOS — there's no such function there; Turned it off through the touchpad configuration utility — there's no such function there; Turned it off through the device manager — the disable button is inactive; Turned it off through a hotkey (Fn + F1 in my case) — the hotkey doesn't work; Uninstalled the proprietary driver — Windows automatically downloaded the standard driver; Uninstalled the standard driver and turned off the automatic driver download function (Win + R ? "systempropertiesadvanced" ? Hardware ? Device Installation Settings) — all the same, Windows downloaded and installed the driver. How can I disable a touchpad? Windows 7; the Alps touchpad.

  We're running OpenLDAP on Ubuntu 10.04. I'm able to access and use the front end with cn=admin,dc=ourcompany,dc=com and my password. But I'm unable to change the server's configuration (like loglevel) stored in cn=config because I don't seem to have a valid user/password for the backend?   Hi, We are hosting our web site on host monster, but want our email to continue to be hosted at the old site. Our domain points to the hostmonster DNS servers, but I can't figure out the right configuration for the remote email servers. We have one MX entry, which is priority: 0 domain: ourdomain.com And then we have these DNS entries ... name: mail.ourdomain.com ttl: 14400 class: IN type: A record: old.host.ip.address name: mail1.ourdomain.com ttl: 14400 class: IN type: A record: old.host.secondip.address Can someone tell me what I need to add/edit to get mail to correctly route to our old host? • How to deal with a 'public' work environment?

  In the last 6 months, I have changed desks at my office 4 times. I don't mind, as it's due to expansion of the company and acquiring new office space and getting everybody settled. However, I truly miss the semi-private office I sat in 2 desks ago. I am now sitting in a large room with a number of other people. My problem with this isn't with my co-workers; everybody here is great. My problem is that based on the configuration of the room, no matter which desk I sit in, my monitors WILL be facing an open window. This causes a glare on my monitors, and it drives me crazy. I prefer a dark IDE theme as I find it easier on the eyes, however this just makes the glare that much worse. How should programmers cope with public office settings? Secondly, how should I cope with my specific problem? Should I give in and adopt a light IDE theme that will reduce the visibility of the glare but increase eye strain, or should I stick to my guns and find another solution?

• IIS reveals internal IP address in content-location field

  Referring: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q218180/, there is a known issue in IIS4/5/6 whereby it will reveal the internal IP of a web server in the content-location field of the HTTP header. We have IIS 6. I have tried the fix suggested, but it has not worked. The website is configured to send all requests to ASP.NET, and I am wondering if this is why the fix, which addresses IIS configuration, has not worked for us. If this is the case, how would we fix this in ASP.NET? We need to fix this issue in order to pass a security audit.

  I'm trying to configure port forwarding for Apache 2.2 installed on Windows XP SP3 with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router. The computer has a static IP 192.168.1.2. Port forwarding is configured as following: Enable true Name Apache Protocol TCP (also tried TCP and UPD) WAN Host Start IP Address empty WAN Host End IP Address empty WAN Connection stream WAN Start Port 8080 WAN End Port 8080 LAN Host IP Address 192.168.1.2 LAN Host Start Port 8080 LAN Host End Port 8080 Port 8080 is open for both TCP and UPD in Windows Brandmauer. Apache configuration: Listen 192.168.1.2:8080 Router Firmware: Hardware Version V1.0.01 Software Version V8.0.02T03_CFA Boot Loader Version V1.1.2 The provider is COMSTAR. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

• "Disk boot failure" error after installing Windows 7 on SSD

  I have a system with 3 SATA drives which runs fine. Got a new SSD drive and wanted to install a fresh Windows-7 on it. So I removed the boot drive and replaced it with the SSD drive. Installed Windows and when it was done, rebooted and now I get "Disk boot failure. Insert system disk and press enter" error message. I reinstall again and still same message. Removed the SSD and put back the original drive and I got the same message!! I checked the BIOS and things look good. Something is wrong. Two questions: 1- Why isn't the new Windows booting from the SSD? 2- Why isn't the machine booting using the previous working configuration anymore, after removing the SSD? I did connect it during the second Windows installation but it was the last drive in the SATA connector. Would Windows installer mess with its MBR sector?

• Cannot open the device or file specified for office files

  Recently I've noticed on couple of computers that when users try to open Office files or links (to server path) to office files they get this error "Windows cannot access the specified device path or file", but the files itself open up without problems. This happened on 4 Windows XP computers already with Office 2003 installed. One one computer it was XLSX file being opened and every time user executed it, it opened up, but the error pops out. On the other hand when I open it directly from Office it works fine, without error. On another 3 computers it was after user pressed on the link to Access DB and it error out, but Access began MSI configuration (since it was first time user logged in to his computer) and in the end it opened up properly. After closing access and doing it again problem disappeared. Some faulty patch ? Eset Smart Security 4 is installed.

• Unable to Install VirtualBox Due to Missing Kernel Module

  I am trying to install VirtualBox on my Ubuntu. I first tried to sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose in a terminal, but after the configuration step, it fails with an error: No suitable module for running kernel found When proceeding with starting virtualbox, I get this error: WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-ose-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I tried the package from http://www.virtualbox.org/, but starting VirtualBox fails with: WARNING: The vboxdrv kernel module is not loaded. Either there is no module available for the current kernel (2.6.38-8-generic-pae) or it failed to load. Please recompile the kernel module and install it by sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. So I ran sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but it fails too: * Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [ OK ] * Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules [ OK ] * Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMS Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 2.6.38-8-generic-pae cannot be found at /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/build or /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic-pae/source. * Failed, trying without DKMS * Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules * Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong The contents of /var/log/vbox-install.log. As I am stuck, I also tried to install kernel-devel with yum, still fruitless: root@ubuntu# yum install kernel-devel Setting up Install Process No package kernel-devel available. Nothing to do Now I've no idea how to correct this. Any ideas?

  I am trying to connect my mac terminal shell to a VirtualBox running the Musicbrainz server. I have configured the network through a BridgeAdapter and running ifconfig on both the host and the guest show corresponding IP addresses. I can now ping the guest, but I cannot connect through SSH.   I just set up a 3 node system with ip addresses "192.168.0.101", "192.168.0.102", "192.168.0.103". I have set the seeds value on the configuration of all three machines as seeds: "192.168.0.101,192.168.0.102,192.168.0.103" However, on running nodetool on any of them, only the 103 machine gets discovered. node101:/opt/cassandra/apache-cassandra-0.8.5/bin# ./nodetool ring -h 192.168.0.101 Address DC Rack Status State Load Owns Token 192.168.0.103 datacenter1 rack1 Up Normal 151.96 KB 100.00% 38174485210079977599903748344879358256 Could someone tell me where the problem lies?

• How to remap CAPSLOCK to ESC in Linux Mint 12

  I would like to remap the CAPSLOCK key to ESC as this is easier to use in Vim. I can make it in Ubuntu 11.04 as there's an option for this in Keyborad configuration. But recently I switched to use Linux Mint and found that there's no such option. I don't know whether it is the gnome3 that makes this happen, as there are only some basic features to customize.
