• Realtek audio AC 97 5.1 on Windows 7: Terrible subwoofer quality

  I have a media center PC with on-board Realtek AC97 Audio. I have been using Windows XP for a couple of years with great audio quality. I just upgraded this PC with Windows 7 and installed the latest Realtek drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/ At the testing screen, all the speakers works correctly (including subwoofer). Despite that, while playing any movie or music, the subwoofer quality is terrible. From it it just comes noises, in the correct rhythm but quite low and quite out of tone. I compensated the loudness by putting the other speakers lower but the sound of the subwoofer is really terrible. Is there anyone facing the same problem? Does anyone have a workaround for that? PS.: I had gone past the steps given in Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip but still I have a bad quality of sound. • Damaged XenServer Storage LVM partition table

  I have a homeserver running under XenServer control with 3x1TB discs inside, one for XenServer and two mirrored(using Intel's fakeRAID and dmraid) for VMs and a user data(but now I think RAID didn't work). I tried to pass PCI card to VM using PCI-passthroug and I read somewhere that I need to recompile kernel with pciback module but something went wrong(I made mistake in /boot/extlinux.conf and server couldn't run) and I had to use LiveCD of GPartEd(I already had it on USB key) to correct this. But when I re-run the server all VDIs were gone. I have completly no idea what could go wrong. I tried to repair RAID using dmraid -R in the hope that everything will return to noramal but now I think this done more bad than good(and corrupted rest of LVM table...). Is there any possibility to recover this SR or only data from one(~100GB) of VDI? I also wants to apologise for my English, I'm not from English-speaking country and I'm only 16 years old, so I hadn't "time" to learn it(school isn't good place to do this) in sufficient way.

• Lost all data on Windows XP after blue screen

  I got a blue screen and was trying to boot with my OS disk. Frankly, I was unsure exactly how to do this. I was trying everything and booted in partition mode. Finally, I booted with disk and ran chkdsk /r and was able to log into Windows. But, all of my files and pictures are gone. I have no backup and all I'm sick to think that I lost the last seven years of pictures of my kids. What can I do?

• New installation - Win 7 or directly Win 8?

  My laptop's hard disk is gone, so I need to re-install my Windows. Would it be a good idea to directly install Win8 (so actually the preview). Is there any known incompatibility with Win7 which would be a show stopper? I have a Dell XPS laptop, I do not expect any driver issues since the series is pretty much mainstream. Would the Win8 preview become Win8 RTM automatically by updates, or would I need to re-install Win8 RTM. This would be the no-go for me. The Win8 preview does not require a key, so I guess it becomes Win 8 RTM and then needs to be activated (which is what I want). Basically the idea is, I have to install windows anyway, so why not using the latest version?

• Why doesn't the People Pane in Outlook 2010 show appointments for individual contacts?

  Outlook 2010 will not show appointments in the people pane. Under the activities tab if I go to All Items then eventually the appointments will show, but this takes a seriously long time. If I then click off the tab to look at another field then return to All Items, all the appointments are gone again. I need to be able to: Open a contact and see when that contact has appointments Open an appointment and see which contacts are attached to that appointment It works well from the appointment card to the contact, but has me completely frustrated going from the contact card to find the appontments. I have tried many things but cannot solve this problem. My set up is as follows: Exchange Server Windows 7 Ultimate Indexing enabled Cached exchange mode enabled Help! This is the whole reason I installed Outlook 2010.

• Motherboard on, but nothing will start

  I'll try and be as clear as possible. Recently I purchased a barebones kit for my first attempt at a full PC assembly. I've gone through and connected all the parts correctly based on numerous examples that confirm everything is connected correctly. The motherboard and the video card are receiving power based on the fact that the motherboard's power LED is on and the video card has some LEDs on. Nothing else in the computer will come on when pressing the power button on the case. No fans, no hard drive, no CPU fan. Not even for a split second. I also receive no beeping noise from the speaker connected to the motherboard. I've also tried swapping the reset and power connectors from the front of the case to no luck.

• HP DL580 G5 Hyper-V networking problem

  Hi I have installed the hyper-v role on a DL580 G5 cluster. The host operating system is a server 2008 x64 patched to the maximum. Everything has gone fine, but if I install a guest operating system, actually a windows server 2008 x64 I can't reach the network from it. It send many packets, but don't received any, so I can't ping the external network as well. I have installed the latest drivers to the server and unintalled the network configuration utility from the physical server, but no luck. I added a legacy adapter to the guest binded to the same phisycal adapter on the host machine but it can't help Any idea welcome...

• IE "About:Tab" page hijacked

  Hey folks, Client o' mine, running Windows 7 64-bit, installed Kiwee Toolbar and then uninstalled it. The software is pretty much gone except for one last thing: The About:Tab IE page redirects to a Kiwee search page. I have temporarily disabled the "New Tab" page via Internet Explorer's options, but it annoys me. I have scanned with multiple tools. Spyware Doctor purports to removed it, but they want money to remove it. I would buy it -if- I could be certain it would fix the problem. I've also searched the registry and the filesystem for instances of the program, plus I've removed Kiwee manually via the many manual uninstalls out there. IE's AboutURLs registry entry still points to res://ieframe.dll/tabswelcome.htm and if I enter that URL into IE, the correct New Tab page comes up. Any help appreciated.

• Temporarily Utilizing 304 Header on Apache for Crawlers

  I have a client who has a hosting arrangement with 400 customer sites all hosted through SuPHP in CGI mode on Apache. The sysop is now gone and the client is calling on me for rolling out a new PHP thing. Trouble is -- server load is very high right now and we have found that it's due to the crawlers. We had one customer in particular who complained of slow websites, and we engaged a 304 header plugin in his site against most crawlers, and his site perked right up. We'd like to lower that load by issuing a global 304 header to all the crawlers, letting human visitors through. I have a long list of user agent keywords to trap for. What's the best way to temporarily engage that global 304 header, while allowing human visitors to get right on through? I mean, I could roll out 400 .htaccess file changes, but it would be ideal to make this change in like one central Apache config and then it automatically affect all the sites at once.

• IE8 Crash On Startup

  Hello All, I have a problem - IE8 has suddenly stopped working. I was doing some development work, and suddenly IE8 crashed every time I tried to use it. I've rebooted, but still crash every time I try to open it. There is no real indication as to what has gone wrong. It just says "Internet Explorer has stopped working". I've tried almost everything that I've seen when I've Googled it: I disabled all Add-Ins via Manage Add-Ins, but it still crashes on startup* I re-registered IEPROXY.DLL * The thing I don't understand is that if I start from the Run box with the -extoff option, IE starts up. Isn't that the same as disabling all Add-Ins? Any ideas? Thanks, wTs

• Re-deploy Reports from SCOM 2007 R2 Management Packs

  I've migrated Reporting Services on a SCOM 2007 R2 install, and noticed that the reports have not being copied. I can create a new report, but the ones I've had because of the management packs are gone. I've tried re-applying the Management Packs however it doesn't re-deploy them and when I try to access for example: Monitoring - Microsoft Windows Print Server - Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003 Print Services - State View - select any item and click Alerts on the right menu. I get the following error: Date: 12/24/2010 12:40:35 PM Application: System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 Application Version: 6.1.7221.0 Severity: Error Message: Cannot initialize report. • Linux halts every few seconds

  We're having an issue where one our Linux boxes (Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, running on EC2 with a quadruple-large size, 68GB of RAM and 8 virtual cores with 3.25GHz each) freezes up every few seconds. Typing in an ssh session will freeze, and running strace on one of the Postgresql processes that's running usually shows: 02:37:41.567990 semop(7831581, {{3, -1, 0}}, 1 for a few seconds before it proceeds (it always gets stuck at that semop). OProfile shows that most of the time is spent in the kernel (60%) versus 37% in Postgresql. The result of these halts (which began suddenly a day ago) is that load on the box has gone from 0.7 to 10+, and causes our entire stack to slow done. Any ideas on how to track down what's going on? iostat doesn't show the disks being particularly slow or overloaded, and top shows user cpu % spike from 8% to about 40% whenever these back-ups happen.

• Removing connections to network printers that no longer exist

  I'm trying to delete some network printer connections from a Windows Server 2003 (SP2) machine because the printer shares no longer exist. Windows shows the printers' status as "Printer not found on server, unable to connect"; this is expected; the printers are now on a different server. Only one machine ever connected to the printer shares; it no longer needs to and I'd like to clean it up. However, when I try to delete the connections, I get an error message: --------------------------- Remove Printer --------------------------- Printer connection cannot be removed. Operation could not be completed. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- The "solutions" I've found online seem to be more voodoo than anything (and they still don't work!). Does anybody know how I can delete these long-gone printers?

• Why Both 8GB USB Flash Drives Have Different Integrities?

  USB 3.0 SuperTalent Express DUO 8GB recently had its partition corrupted and declared itself "write-protected" and I was told in chat by @sidran32 that this usually means that flash drive gone bad due to writing cycles limit being reached. Having this thumbdrive for over a year being used infrequently, I was in doubt and referred to SuperTalent's support. I was given recovery tool which I executed but it failed first time prompting me to reinsert it. After that, I formatted it with Windows 7 integrated format utility since recovery tool offered to do this as well which was successful. The problem as I have noticed is with integrity of SuperTalent: Compare above to SanDisk's Micro Cruzer 8GB: Am I missing something? Both thumbdrives are of 8GB and have same FAT32 file system.

• MySQL 5.5 on Windows server is horribly slow

  I have had no luck getting MySQL 5.5 to be as fast as 5.1 or MariaDB on the exact same hardware/database/environment under Windows server 2003R2 or 2008R2. My benchmarks from our application: MySQL 5.5 + CentOS 5.2 (XenServer Virtual) = 28 seconds (box is "busy" not buried) MariaDB (5.1) + Windows 2003 (Physical box) = 130 seconds (box is 2% busy) MySQL 5.1 + Windows 2003 (Physical box) = 170 seconds (box is 2% busy) MySQL 5.5 + Windows 2003 (Physical box) = 305 seconds (As high as 600 seconds...) (box is 2% busy) The only difference between these runs is the removal of skip-locking and the running of mysql_upgrade.exe to update some tables for stored procs on 5.5. Yes, I know it's a release candidate, I'm feeding that back to MySQL as well. No slow queries are logged, it doesn't think it's being slow, it just is. I'm going to start tearing into the queries themselves to see if the INSERT/SELECT plans have gone buggo on 5.5. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

• How to remove 'ApacheMonitor.exe' from notification area

  For some reason I had 2 instances of Apache running, and I have no idea how. I also had two instances of ApacheMonitor.exe showing in the "Notification Area Icons" place when you right click on your taskbar and go to properties. To fix the multiple instance issue, I deleted Apache completely and uninstalled the service (I did not use the .msi, I install from a .zip). Anyways, Everything from Apache is gone except the two things in the Notification Area Icon page. Does anyone know how to remove these two icons? I have completely uninstalled Apache, cleaned my registry with CCleaner, and rebooted. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Despite what the picture says, I do NOT have Apache installed, and it is not running.

• Redmine on Redhat/CentOS 5 Without using virtual hosts

  I've have followed all the steps to install Redmine on CentOS 5, except for the Apache part: http://www.redmine.org/projects/redmine/wiki/HowTo_install_Redmine_on_CentOS_5 I do not want to configure a virtualhost as we are not using virtual hosts. Can I configure Redmine to run with http://hostname/redmine? Apparently it doesn't work for my case. • Windows Server 2008 R2 Apache 2.2 PHP 5.3.3 install problem

  I am trying to install Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.3.3 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. I've managed to setup Apache, but PHP is not working correctly: I've downloaded the latest zip from windows.php.net (VC6) and I've modified http.conf in order to load the php5 module (LoadModule, AddType & PHPIniDir). So far, so good - phpinfo() is showing and I am happy... But, there is no php.ini file - I haven't yet renamed the bundled php.ini-development|php.ini-production file. If I do so (in order to modify PHP's configuration), no php code is interpreted (including phpinfo()). I've gone over the entire php.ini-development file and still it is not working... This is very strange. Any help is welcome, Thanks in advance.

• Mac OS X file recovery

  I thought that all operating systems would merge folder content when being moved to the same location. Imagine my surprise when that didn't happen and I have hundreds, if not thousands of files that have gone missing and are nowhere to be found. Because they were not "deleted" they are not in the trash bin. I've tried to do some recovery using a program called stellarPheonix but after about a 24hour scan, it didn't recognize any of the raw files (.dng,.arw) as image files and so I couldn't see if they could be recovered. It also didn't show the directory structure, which would be handy. I tried a quick scan, but all it showed was files that were still on the HD, not sure what the point of that is. I've used recover 2000 on Win and it does a good job, does anyone know of anything that works quickly and reliably for this kind of file recovery. (I don't think I should have to do a sector-by=sector for this kind of file loss)

• My acer aspire laptop suddenly stopped working, just a blank screen

  My acer aspire laptop suddenly stopped working while it was connected to my nokia mobile modem through usb. It stopped with power swich staying on and no response to clicking off, no irregular sound, nothing but just a blank screen. I disconnected the power and battery quickly but power switch did not respond at all and even the power indicator didn't turn on again. the display was also gone after disconecting the power and removing battery. It has no response or any sign of power while both battery and power supply are working. What do you think? A completely dead mainboard? Does the MB has any safty board or fuse that could be replaced? Any suggestion will be appreciated, Thank you.

• MySQL dump, output each table row on a new line whilst using --extended-insert

  I'm having an issue, where for ease of use, I'd like to be able to format a command line MySQL dump so that each row of a given table is on a new line when using the --extended-insert option. Usually when using --extended-insert, every row of a given table is outputted on one line, and as far as I am aware there's no way to change this, other than post-processing the dump with perl or such like. The format I'm looking for is: -- -- Dumping data for table `ww_tbCountry` -- INSERT INTO `ww_tbCountry` (`iCountryId_PK`, `vCountryName`, `vShortName`, `iSortFlag`, `fTax`, `vCountryCode`, `vSageTaxCode`) VALUES (22, 'Albania', 'AL', 1, 0.00, '8', 'T9'), (33, 'Austria', 'AT', 1, 15.00, '40', 'T9'), (40, 'Belarus', 'BY', 1, 0.00, '112', 'T9'), (41, 'Belgium', 'BE', 1, 15.00, '56', 'T9'), (51, 'Bulgaria', 'BG', 1, 15.00, '100', 'T9' However, when I dump a database using Phpmyadmin, using --extended-insert, each row is dumped on a new line (as shown by the example above).   Hello: I need to know a name of a company to fix my server install and get my sites running again. Windows 2008 IIS 7 Plesk 9.x The problem started when Level 2 of my hosting company adjusted a FTP users to have certain permissions....apparently he did this outside of plesk and it has been nothing but permission headaches all around. Connections....uploading files, etc. now somethings gone wrong where plesk isnt even loading properly and IIS too... I need to see if someone can fix this remotely before I give the green light to format and reinstall server, IIS, Plesk and Domains! looking to pay a company to get this working ASAP - This is not requested as a free job so I need someone good and who can fix it without the huge hassle of formatting and such. • Complete refresh of the OS - windows 7.

  So, the girlfriend's got a virus, and it's pretty nasty. I don't have the time to mess around with it, and she's not so bad with computers, but this is out of her league. (considering her idea of fixing the problem was to download a virus scan that was malware itself) I think I remember hearing that it's possible to put in some restore/recovery disk that comes with the computer to bring Windows back to the way it was originally right from the factory. The problem is, I bought that computer off the shelf - literally - and I don't think I received a disk, or if I had, it's probably gone now. Do you guys have any idea what I could do? I'm all for reformatting, it's just a toy PC for her. I just don't have a disk to re-install windows 7 with.
