    - by Andy Gregory
A help desk, for larger companies is a place for centralized help within an enterprise to help the users of their products and services. Therefore,to find the solution that best fits your business requirements, it is important to research, examine, and compare help desk software. As far as I know,Hesk is an free helpdesk software with some limited features while h2desk can provide the hosted solution. But for my small business,i just need a web based help desk software which can provide ticket management and knowledge base faq. We need unlimited staff support. Maybe a freeware help desk software can not meet our needs. So,we are willing to pay for effective helpdesk solution. But it should be low cost. We have gotten two choice: iKode Helpdesk Nethelpdesk Our helpdesk team are tend to iKode Helpdesk. Any other efficient first-class help desk solution to share?

  • Own mediawiki/wikipedia naming convention for pages

    - by Andy M
I recently installed a mediawiki at home and I'm looking for a way to name pages. Let's say I have the following structure : Main - Dev - C# - Tips Main - Cooking - Mexixan Cooking - Tips Main - Annoying my girlfriend - Tips Each final page is a different Tips page. Naming them only "tips" won't work because I need three different pages. Now, I could name each of my tips page with its "path" (ex: main_cooking_mexican_cooking_tips) but it looks cumbersome and the problem is that, whenever I'll change the structure of my mediawiki, some pages will need to change their name in order to be corrects. Does it exist some convention to follow regarding this ? Thanks for your help !

  • (Some) security perms in WinXP corrupted (shows GUID instead of username)

    - by Andy
I've been using my Win XP machine (part of a domain) over the holiday period, so until yesterday it hadn't rebooted for about five days. I used it yesterday perfectly fine and shut it down. When I switched it on this morning the majority (but not all) of my shortcut links in the Quick Launch toolbar showed as generic file icons. If you open the folder and get properties on one of the failing shortcuts it says ''Target type: This is not a valid shortcut''. Then in Outlook I noticed my signature wasn't showing (I checked my sent folder and the sig was ok yesterday). Checking the signature folder, I can't see the security tab on any of the sig files, and I have an access denied message on trying to open them. I can see the security tab on the signature folder itself, just none of the contents. If I try and use the parent folder's security tab and ''Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects'' it appears to work fine, but makes no actual difference. I logged in as administrator and saw that the owner of the files showed up as a GUID (clearly should've been my account in its place). Any ideas what might have made that happen? So far I haven't heard any similar complaints from anyone else at the office...

  • How to start and stop a systemd unit with another?

    - by Andy Shinn
I am using CoreOS to schedule systemd units with fleet. I have two units (firehose.service and firehose-announce.service. I am trying to get the firehose-announce.service to start and stop along with the firehose.service. Here is the unit file for firehose-announce.service: [Unit] Description=Firehose etcd announcer BindsTo=firehose@%i.service After=firehose@%i.service Requires=firehose@%i.service [Service] EnvironmentFile=/etc/environment TimeoutStartSec=30s ExecStartPre=/bin/sh -c 'sleep 1' ExecStart=/bin/sh -c "port=$(docker inspect -f '{{range $i, $e := .NetworkSettings.Ports }}{{$p := index $e 0}}{{$p.HostPort}}{{end}}' firehose-%i); echo -n \"Adding socket $COREOS_PRIVATE_IPV4:$port/tcp to /firehose/upstream/firehose-%i\"; while netstat -lnt | grep :$port >/dev/null; do etcdctl set /firehose/upstream/firehose-%i $COREOS_PRIVATE_IPV4:$port --ttl 300 >/dev/null; sleep 200; done" RestartSec=30s Restart=on-failure [X-Fleet] X-ConditionMachineOf=firehose@%i.service I am trying to use BindsTo with the notion that start and stop of firehose.service will also start or stop firehose-announce.service. But this never happens correctly. If firehose.service is stopped, then firehose-announce.service goes to failed state. But when I start firehose.service, the firehose-announce.service doesn't start up. What am I doing wrong here?

  • unlock database files when SQL server is idle

    - by Andy
In my development/test environment on my laptop, I can't back up the SQL server database files because the file handles are kept permanently open by SQL server (VSS doesn't work because the drive is truecrypted) I was hoping there may be some setting in SQL server that can make it unlock the data files after a certain period of inactivity and automatically open them again on demand, but I can't find anything. I don't really want to be dumping the database out every night because it's only a development environment. apart from stopping sql server before I do the backup is there any other solution?

  • Require file for mount and also update the file after mount?

    - by Andy Shinn
I am trying to make sure a directory exists for a mount and then also update the permissions of that directory after the mount happens. I am receiving the following error: err: Failed to apply catalog: Cannot alias File[pre_eos_mount] to ["/var/tmp/eos"] at /etc/puppet/modules/mymodule/manifests/eos.pp:29; resource ["File", "/var/tmp/eos"] already declared at /etc/puppet/modules/mymodule/manifests/eos.pp:47 I would like to do something like this: file { $eos_mount : ensure = 'directory', mode = '1777', owner = 'root', group = 'root', } mount { $eos_mount : ensure = 'mounted', device = $lv_device, fstype = $fstype, options = 'defaults, noatime, nodiratime', require = File[$eos_mount], notify = File['post_eos'], } file { 'post_eos' : path = $eos_mount, ensure = 'directory', mode = '1777', owner = 'root', group = 'root', } What is a way to ensure permissions of a folder after it has been mounted?

  • How to securely control access to a backend key server?

    - by andy
I need to securely encrypt data in my database so that if the database is dumped, hackers are unable to decrypt the data. I'm planning on creating a simple key server on a different machine, and allowing the DB server access to it (restricted by IP address on the key server to permit the DB server). The key server would contain the key required to encrypt/decrypt data. However, if a hacker were able to get a shell on the DB server, they could request the key from the key server and therefore decrypt the data in the database. How could I prevent this (assuming all firewalls are in place, DB is not connected directly to the internet, etc)? i.e. is there some method I could use that could secure a request from the DB server to the key server so that even if a hacker had a shell on the DB server they'd be unable to make those same requests? Signed requests from the DB server could make issuing these requests less trivial - I suppose that'd help increase the amount of time it'd take to compromise the key server, something a hacker probably wouldn't have much of. As far as I can see, if someone can get a shell on the DB server everything's lost anyway. This could be mitigated by using one key per data item in the DB so at least there's not a single "master" key, but multiple keys that the hacker would need to access. What would be a secure method of ensuring requests from the DB server to the key server were authentic and could be trusted?

  • How can I figure out if programming is right for me? [closed]

    - by user66414
I have an IT background and was pretty confident until an opportunity came up at work to go into programming(C#). I have never programmed before this, and the software I am programming for is a program I have never used before (a 3D modeling software). It has been 6 months since then and I feel like giving up. I didn't get much training... about 3 weeks of training spread out over the last 6 months. I think I would be good at programming but this experience is kinda making me rethink my decision. I'm not sure if it's just me, or if this frustration is normal. How can I tell if programming is right for me?

  • Puppet installing multiple packages results in Package[undef] error

    - by Andy Shinn
I am receiving the following error on a Puppet agent when trying to install multiple packages at once: err: /Stage[main]/Template::Infrastructure/Package[undef]/ensure: change from absent to present failed: Execution of '/usr/bin/yum -d 0 -e 0 -y install undef' returned 1: Error: Nothing to do The code generating the error is: $packages = [ 'qemu-kvm', 'qemu-kvm-tools', 'drbd84-tools', 'kmod-drbd84' ] package { $::packages : ensure = 'installed', require = Class['yumrepos::elrepo'] } The problem is intermittent. Is there a better way to install multiple packages at once without having to setup a package resource for each?

  • Please explain class methods

    - by user1209902
I'm finding it difficult to understand when it is necessary to create class methods. From what I've read, they are important for creating new objects, but I do not see how. The following class create a simple shape black rectangle. Can anyone show me how to incorporate a class method to do something that I could not do with an instance method? Shape.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface Shape : UIView; - (id) initWithX: (int)xVal andY: (int)yVal; @end Shape.m #import "Shape.h" @implementation Shape - (id) initWithX:(int )xVal andY:(int)yVal { self = [super init]; UIView *shape = [[UIView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(xVal, yVal, 10, 10)]; shape.backgroundColor = [UIColor blackColor]; [self addSubview:shape]; return self; } @end

  • How to train users converting from PC to Mac/Apple at a small non profit?

    - by Everette Mills
Background: I am part of a team that provides volunteer tech support to a local non profit. We are in the position to obtain a grant to update almost all of our computers (many of them 5 to 7 year old machines running XP), provide laptops for users that need them, etc. We are considering switching our users from PC (WinXP) to Macs. The technical aspects of switching will not be an issue for the team. We are in the process of planning data conversions, machine setup, server changes, etc regardless of whether we switch to Macs or much newer PCs. About 1/4 of the staff uses or has access to a Mac at home, these users already understand the basics of using the equipment. We have another set of (generally younger) users that are technically savvy and while slightly inconvenienced and slowed for a few days should be able to switch over quickly. Finally, several members of the staff are older and have many issues using there computers today. We think in the long run switching to Macs may provide a better user experience, fewer IT headaches, and more effective use of computers. The questions we have is what resources and training (webpages, Books, online training materials or online courses) do you recommend that we provide to users to enable the switchover to happen smoothly. Especially, with a focus on providing different levels of training and support to users with different skill levels. If you have done this in your own organization, what steps were successful, what areas were less successful?

  • Sub-Schemas in SQL Server 2005/2008

    - by Maushu
This is a simple question yet I was unable to find any information at all about this. Is it possible to have sub-schemas in SQL Server 2005/2008? Example: Having a HR (Human Resources) schema with a sub-schema called Training (with tables related to this). It would end up like HR.Training.* where * would be the tables.

@oracletechnet: Oracle Technology Network Newsletters Revisited "You may find this hard to believe, but some analysts contend that email newsletters are still among the most preferred methods of "information awareness" by developers today. And in our experience, the numbers back it up: subscriptions to Oracle Technology Network newsletters grow organically by 15% every year, even after you take continual list cleanup into account. (tags: oracle sun wsdl webservices DSEE netbeans jdeveloper) Nick Wooler: Iron-Clad Cloud: Secure Cloud Computing "One solution to the security problem with cloud services can be overcome using Service Oriented Security. The Oracle approach to using Service Oriented Security allows developers to pull from a centralized, authoritative source of identity services. This allows developers to build security into every application from the inside-out. This is critical to ensuring this is done in a standardized manner and most importantly it allows developers to develop without being security experts." -- Nick Wooler (tags: oracle sun security cloud saas) Andy Mulholland: A week of visits; Cisco, HP, Oracle, SAP and VMware (in alphabetical order!) "I now am considering that we should be thinking about ‘clouds’ in virtual way, by which I mean that a succession of virtual ‘clouds’ will need to exist, each possessing specific characteristics that suit certain types of services. Really it’s no different to what we see with servers today. Adding a hypervisor to a server adds new flexibility, but creating a virtualised environment means much more. What I suspect will happen is that we will start to use vendor specific approaches to building what I will term a physical cloud solution using their technology and approach to supporting a specific objective, but with time we will find these physical clouds will interoperate as a fully virtualised cloud environment." -- Andy Mulholland (tags: entarch enterprisearchitecture cloudcomputing virtualization) @fteter: Highlights From The Bright Lights - Tuesday #c10 Oracle Ace Director Floyd Teter of JPL with one last wrap-up of Collaborate 10. In this Issue: Colin Eberhardt Zoltan Arvai, Marcel du Preez, Mark Tucker, John Papa, Phil Middlemiss, Andy Beaulieu, and Chad Campbell. From SilverlightCream.com: Throttling Silverlight Mouse Events to Keep the UI Responsive Colin Eberhardt sent me this link to his latest at Scott Logic... about how to throttle Silverlight -- no not that, you'd have to go to one of the *other* blogs for that :) ... this is throttling the mouse, particularly the mouse wheel to keep the UI from freezing up ... check out the demos, you'll want to read the code Data Driven Applications with MVVM Part I: The Basics Zoltan Arvai started a series of tutorials on Data-Driven Applications with MVVM at SilverlightShow... this is number 1, and it looks like it's going to be a good series to read. Red-To-Green scale using an IValueConverter Marcel du Preez has an interesting post up at SilverlightShow using an IValueConverter to do a red/yellow/green progress bar ... this is pretty cool. Infragistics XamWebOutlookBar & Caliburn With assistance from Rob Eisenburg, Mark Tucker was able to build a Caliburn sample including the Infragistics XamWebOutlookBar, and he's sharing his experience (and code) with all of us. Printing Tip – Handling User Initiated Dialogs Exceptions John Papa responded to a common printing problem by writing it up in his blog. Note this problem quite often appears during debug, so check it out... John also has a quick tip on an update to the PrintAPI in Silverlight 4. Automatic Rectangle Radius X and Y Phil Middlemiss has another great Blend post up -- this one on rounding off buttons... they look great to me, but he's looking for advice -- how about that Phil? They look great to me :) WP7 Back Button in Games Planning on selling 'stuff' in the Windows Phone Marketplace? Are you familiar with the required use of the Back Button? How about in a game? ... Andy Beaulieu discusses all this and has some code you'll want to use. Windows Phone 7 – Call Phone Number from HyperlinkButton Chad Campbell [no relation :) ] is discussing dialing a number from a hyperlink in WP7 - oh yeah, it's a phone as well :) -- I think I've only seen a number attempt to be called -- hmm... and we're not yet either because we all have emulators, but this is a good intro to the functionality for when we may actually have devices! • Are there any books that teach techniques for effective pair programming?

    - by Paul D. Waite
I’ve just read the pair programming chapter of ‘Making Software’ by Andy Oram, and I’d like to try it when I next get an opportunity. The chapter mentions that in one of the studies, the subjects were initially given instruction on effective pair programming. Are there any books (or chapters of books) that I could read to get a good grounding in how to do pair programming effectively, so that I’m more prepared?

  • Silverlight Cream for March 14, 2011 -- #1060

    - by Dave Campbell
In this Issue: Lazar Nikolov, Rudi Grobler, WindowsPhoneGeek, Jesse Liberty, Pete Brown, Jessica Foster, Chris Rouw, Andy Beaulieu, and Colin Eberhardt. Above the Fold: Silverlight: "A Silverlight Resizable TextBlock (and other resizable things)" Colin Eberhardt WP7: "Retrofitting the Trial API" Jessica Foster Shoutouts: Rudi Grobler has a post up that's not Silverlight, but it's cool stuff you may be interested in: WPF Themes now available on NuGet From SilverlightCream.com: Simulating rain in Silverlight Lazar Nikolov has a cool tutorial up at SilverlightShow... Simulating rain. Nice demo near to top, and source code plus a very nice tutorial on the entire process. Making the ApplicationBar bindable Rudi Grobler has a couple new posts up... first this one on making the WP7 AppBar bindable... he's created 2 simple wrappers that make it possible to bind to a method... with source as usual! All about Splash Screens in WP7 – Creating animated Splash Screen WindowsPhoneGeek's latest is about splash screens in WP7, but he goes one better with animated splash screens. Lots of good information including closing points in more of a FAQ-style listing. Testing Network Availability Jesse Liberty's latest is on testing for network availability in your WP7 app. This should be required reading for anyone building a WP7 app, since you never know when the network is going to be there or not. Lighting up on Windows 7 with Native Extensions for Microsoft Silverlight Pete Brown's latest post is about the Native Extensions for Microsoft Silverlight or NESL library. Pete describes what NESL is, a link to the library, installing it, and tons more information. If you wanna know or try NESL... this looks like the place to start. Retrofitting the Trial API Jessica Foster paused on the way to shipping her WP7 app to add in the trial API code. Check out what she went through to complete that task, as she explains the steps and directions she took. Good description, links, and code. WP7 Insights #2: Creating a Splash Screen in WP7 In the 2nd post in his series on WP7 development, Chris Rouw is discussing a WP7 splash screen. He gives some good external links for references then gets right into discussing his code. Air Hockey for Windows Phone 7 Andy Beaulieu shares a tutorial he wrote for the Expression Toolbox site, using the Physics Helper Library and Farseer Physics Engine -- an Air Hockey game for WP7. A Silverlight Resizable TextBlock (and other resizable things) I think Michael Washington had the best comment about Colin Eberhardt's latest outing: "Another WOW example" ... drop this in the pretty darn cool category: an attached behavior that uses a Thumb control within a popup to adorn any UI element to allow the user to resize it!
