• ASP.NET MVC 2 and Windows Azure

If you upgrade an Azure web instance to use ASP.NET MVC 2, make sure you mark the System.Web.Mvc reference as Copy Local = true. Otherwise, your deployment will fail. And you wont get any good feedback from Windows Azure as to the cause of the problem. So youll start searching the web for help, and perhaps youll stumble on this post, and youll realize that you didnt set Copy Local = true on your System.Web.Mvc assembly reference in your ASP.NET MVC 2 web instance. And youll leave happy (or at least slightly happier) than when you came. That is all. Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. • Announcing a new Free Windows Azure Platform Trial offer

- by Eric Nelson
We now have a truly useful Windows Azure Platform trial. Which makes me very happy as I was a vocal critic of the original trial offer. Simply put, the small number of compute hours it included made it useless for many potential early adopters. This is now fixed. The new Introductory Special now includes a generous 750 hours of compute – enough to run a web role 24/7. Enjoy! Related Links Full announcement If you are an ISV then there is a better offer for you via Microsoft Platform Ready and Cloud Essentials and keep an eye on our events for ISVs as we will be doing Windows Azure Platform technical briefings starting March 31st.

• Azure

- by Grant Fritchey
I've been tasked to learn SQL Azure, as well as test all the Red Gate products on it. My one, BIG, fear has been that I'll receive some mongo bill in the mail because I've exceeded the MSDN testing limit. I know people that have had that problem. I've been trying to keep an eye on my usage, but, let's face it, it's not something I think about every day. But now I don't have to. Red Gate has been working with Azure, long before I showed up. They already released a little piece of software that I just found out about, it's called CloudTally. It gathers your usage and sends you a daily email so you can know if you're starting to approach that limit. Check it out, it's free.

• Aberdeen 10/25 Webcast: Service Excellence and the Path to Business Transformation

- by Charles Knapp
The uncertain economy has had a sustained impact on service organizations and processes. The impact has contributed to new complexities - new customer engagement channels, enhanced user and customer expectations, rapidly evolving technologies, increased competition, and increased compliance and regulatory mandates. Yet many organizations have embraced these challenges by investing in and transforming customer service to evolve, differentiate, and thrive under current constraints. What is their secret? Transforming Support Centers into Profit Centers According to the recent Aberdeen research report, “Service Excellence and the Path to Business Transformation”, service is now viewed as a strategic profit center at nearly 70% of organizations. As customers demand improved service, in terms of speed, efficiency and reliability, an organization's success has become increasingly dependent on optimizing the customer ownership experience. Those service organizations focused on providing easy, consistent, and relevant interactions across the customer lifecycle, including service and support delivery, are experiencing higher levels of customer acquisition and retention and are achieving better revenue and margin growth rates. Don't miss this opportunity to learn how to transform to provide the next generation of service offerings. • Choice of Operating System Version for Azure Roles

- by kaleidoscope
Customers can now choose when their applications receive new operating system updates and patches by selecting which version of the operating system their applications will run on in Windows Azure. Right now there is only one available operating system version (released on December 17th, 2009), but new builds with the latest updates and patches will be released regularly. This new feature allows developers to test their applications when new patches come out before upgrading their production deployments. To select an operating system version for your application, add the new osVersion attribute to your service configuration file. The full list of available operating system versions is maintained in the Configuring Operating System Versions topic in the Windows Azure MSDN documentation. Sarang, K

• Raspberry Pi + Azure + Mobile App

- by Richard Jones
Ongoing project idea. So this is of long running personal interest to build a Mobile App that shows you a push notification/pop up alert, when anyone calls your house phone. So I've taken delivery of a Raspberry Pi. I've ordered a new Crucible Technology Caller ID Box. (arriving soon). I have been writing/learning Python to implement the Listener software. This will in turn push xml messages up to Azure for final delivery via push notifications to an App. iOS app already written to receive the notifications/allow address book additions made up from phone numbers from incoming calls. So this is fusion, R-Pi, Azure, Hardware and iOS. Details to follow as this plan unfolds.

• Game Server on Windows Azure

- by MrWiggels
What do you guys think of using Windows Azure for deploying a custom built game server. It's being built in C#, and I want to get a few things down before stretching too far into the project. I like the idea of being scalable, but I also know that I will never get to the scale of anything to the scale of WOW, or something quite as big. It will just be an interesting journey to test something like this. So, will Windows Azure work for that, or is there any other services that can provide something like that?

• Azure Table–Entities having different Schema (Implementation Approach)

- by kaleidoscope
Below is the approach that can be implemented whenever there is a requirement of creating an Azure Table having entities with different schema definitions. We can have a Parent Entity defined which will hold the data common in all the entity types and then rest all entities should inherit from this parent class. There will be only on DataServiceContext class which will accept the object of the Parent class and this can be used for CRUD operations of all the entities. Hope this approach helps! Thanks. • Azure, a Beautiful Color, and So Much More...

- by KKline
Windows and SQL Azure Resources Cloud computing is more than just the latest buzz word in the IT trade papers. It is a remarkable paradigm shift with as much potential to "turn over the apple cart" of IT computing as client-server had for the world of mainframe and minicomputers. If you're not spending time to learn about cloud computing, in general, and SQL Azure, in particular, then you're missing the boat in a big way. (Ha! Two big metaphors in one afternoon. My high-school English teacher would...(read more)

• Scaling SQL Server in Azure

- by simonsabin
If you’ve been reading the wires about SQL Azure you will have seen a change to the tiers that are being offered. Thsi is all so that you can get a more predictable performance level from the platform and also to enable Azure to manage the resources. You now have 3 categories basic, standard and premium, and within those you have some other levels. This enables you to start your service at a low level and then as required request more capacity (through the portal or API). For details on the...(read more)

• Provide a user with service start/stop permissions

- by slakr007
I have a very basic domain that I use for development. I want to create a GPO that provides users in the Backup Operators group with start/stop permissions for two specific services on a specific server. I have read several articles about this, and they all indicate that this is very easy. Create a GPO, give the user start/stop permissions to the services under Computer Configuration Policies Windows Settings Security Settings System Services, and voila. Done. Not so much, but I have to be doing something wrong. My install is pretty much the default. The domain controller is in the Domain Controllers OU, the Backup Operators group is under Builtin, and I created a user called Backup under Users. I created a GPO and linked it to the Domain Controllers OU. In the GPO I give the Backup user permission to start/stop two specific services on the server. I forced an update with gpupdate. I used Group Policy Results to verify that my GPO is the winning GPO giving the user the permission to start/stop the two services. However, the user is still unable to start/stop the services. I attempted different loopback settings on the GPO to no avail. I'm sort of at a loss here.

• .Net 3.5 Windows Service hide WCF Service Host

- by Melursus
I got a Windows service installed on my development machine (that I made) and I want to interact with it. For a reason I don't know, each time I start the client, a WCF Service Host pop and said that the address is already in use ... which is true ... but how can I do to NOT start that Windows ? Is it because my two projects (server and client) are in the same solution ?

• Consuming WebSphere service from WCF client: Unable to create AxisService from ServiceEndpointAddres

- by JohnIdol
I am consuming (or trying to consume) a WebSphere service from a WCF client (service reference + bindings generated through svcutil). Connection seems to be established successfully but I am getting the following error: CWWSS7200E: Unable to create AxisService from ServiceEndpointAddress [address] Rings any bell? I am guessing the request format is somehow being rejected by the service, I am sniffing it with fiddler and it looks fine overall (can post if ppl think it could help). Found this article, but it doesn't seem to apply to my case. Any help appreciated!

• How to start a process from within a windows service

- by BaBu
I want to pop a browser with a given url from within a windows service. Like so: System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("http://www.venganza.org/"); Works fine when running in a console but not from within the service. No error messages, no exceptions, the Process.Start() command just seem to do nothing. It smells of some security issue, maybe something with the service properties and/or logon options? Annoying stuff this... Anybody? (Oh, and on windows 7/.NET framework 3.5.)
