  • Why does my Windows computer immediately turn back on after sleep/hibernate?

    After clicking sleep or hibernate in Windows 7, my computer loads for a while and then goes into sleep mode, but not 1 second later it powers back up. The event log has no errors and no warnings appear when it comes back out of sleep/hibernation. Here's my system specifications: Asus P5KPL-VM Windows 7 I believe this is all that's relevant. I've installed the latest chipset drivers, but I'm unable to update my BIOS (but this is another matter; maybe because the motherboard in the V3-P5G31 bundle is different). I've also tried turning off the "Allow this device to wake up my computer" for the network card, keyboard, and mouse -- but this makes no difference. If flashing the BIOS is the only thing that will fix this, then I will create a new question to this effect. Maybe I should change the suspend mode from S3 to S1?

    Givens: One SQL Server is named: DevServerA Another is named: DevServerB\2K5 Problem: From DevServerA, how can I write a query that references DevServerB\2K5? I tried a sample, dummy query (running it from DevServerA): SELECT TOP 1 * FROM DevServerB\2K5.master.sys.tables And I get the error: Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 2 Incorrect syntax near '\.'. However, I know my syntax is almost correct, since the other way around works (running this query from DevServerB\2K5): SELECT TOP 1 * FROM DevServerA.master.sys.tables Please help me figure out how to reference DevServerB\2K5 from DevServerA.     I am working through a book about Javascript and have encountered the following example of code designed to replace the value of the class attribute of a table header HTML element: th.className = th.className.replace(/asc/,"dsc"); th.className = th.className.replace(/dsc/,"asc"); Why is the first parameter of .replace, the current value of th.className, enclosed in forward slashes instead of quotation marks? Why not use quotation marks to enclose both parameters, not just the second one? Thank you in advance for any help given.     I have mistyped a path and instead of c:\foo.txt wrote c:foo.txt. I expected it to either fail or to resolve to c:\foo.txt, but instead it seems to be resolved to foo.txt in a current user's home folder. Powershell returns: PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("c:\foo.txt") c:\foo.txt PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("c:foo.txt") C:\Users\Administrator\foo.txt PS C:\> [System.IO.Path]::GetFullPath("g:foo.txt") G:\foo.txt Running explorer.exe from commandline and passing it any of the above results in C:\Users\Administrator\Documents to be opened. I haven't found any documentation of that and I'm utterly confused, please explain the behaviour.

  • How do I go back to the initial desktop I got when I first installed the latest Ubuntu?

    I researched all the other questions and can't find specifically what I'm asking. I did a new install of Ubuntu 14.04.1 and started adding tweaks. I saw the Cinnamon desktop and it looked cool, but after I installed it (with Gnome), I decided I wanted to have the native Ubuntu 14.04.1 experience. I've got Unity to show up, but the top banner is still different and I want it just like it was in the initial install. I've added about 20 updates and upgrades and really don't want to go through all that again. I appreciate your response.

    Original Question: After I replaced my Ubuntu 10.10 with 11.04 all I get when I Strg+Alt+F1-6 into a tty is a black screen. Also when I boot there's a while of black screen after grub2 menu is displayed. Then until just before gnome starts it stays black. I have an Nvida Geforce Quadro FX 770M on my HP EliteBook 8530w. How do I get my ttys (aka 'virtual terminals') to work again? My effords in chronological order: So grub and gfx-payload seems to be the problem, I figured. I went along with this guide for higher tty resolution. Which led to the grub2 menu displaying in my native resolution rather than 800x600. The black screen problem remains. I googlehit some bugreports on other nvidia crads having that problem. I tried uninstalling the nvidia driver. No effect. Also tried different resolutions With an older version of the kernel it works. Though not perfectly. The ttys are usable, black screen between grub2 menu and gnome start remains. Not really a solution. Tried so much, that I lost track. Reinstalled grub2 and linux-image-2.6.38-8-generic. Then did this to my /etc/default/grub in accordance with the aforementioned guide (/etc/grub.d/00_header edited as well): GRUB_DEFAULT=0 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 #GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TIMEOUT=3 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` #GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" GRUB_GFXMODE=1680x1050x32 To my surprise I can now use my ttys in native resolution. Black screen between grub2 menu and gnome login screen is still there though. That is annoying since I also use an encrypted disk thus having to enter my passphrase in total dark... Still looking for a solution but urgency is low. Downloaded and installed a later version of nvidia driver. No difference to last edit. Tried GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="vga="-parameter. No effect. nomodeset has no effect. not even in combination with vga=... Tried echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash no effect (see comment) On the verge of resignation...     I've been researching this on google for literally 3 weeks, racking my brain and still not quite finding anything. I can't believe this is so elusive. (I'm a complete beginner so if my terminology sounds stupid then that's why.) I have a database in mysql/phpmyadmin on my web host. I'm trying to create a front end that will allow a user to specify criteria for querying the database in a way that they don't have to know sql, basically just combo boxes and checkboxes on a form. Then have this form 'submit' a query to the database, and show the filtered tables. This is how the SQL looks in Microsoft Access: PARAMETERS TEXTINPUT1 Text ( 255 ), NUMBERINPUT1 IEEEDouble; // pops up a list of parameters for the user to input SELECT DISTINCT Table1.Column1, Table1.Column2, Table1.Column3,* // selects only the unique rows in these three columns FROM Table1 // the table where this query is happening WHERE (((Table1.Column1) Like TEXTINPUT1] AND ((Table1.Column2)<=[NUMBERINPUT1] AND ((Table1.Column3)>=[NUMBERINPUT1])); // the criteria for the filter, it's comparing the user input parameters to the data in the rows and only selecting matches according to the equal sign, or greater than + equal sign, or less than + equal sign What I don't get: WHAT IN THE WORLD AM I SUPPOSED TO USE (that isn't totally hard)!? I've tried google fusion tables - doesn't filter right with numerical data or empty cells in rows, can't relate tables I've tried DataTables.net, can't filter right with numerical data and can't use SQL without a bunch of indepth knowledge, not even sure it can if you have that.. I've looked into using jQuery with google spreadsheets, doesn't work at all either I have no idea how I'm supposed to build a front end with my database. Every place that looks promising (like zohocreator) is asking for money, and is far too simplified to be able to do the LIKE criteria or SELECT DISTINCT stuff.

    A recent update to Xorg broke my desktop, which now looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/PbBxh.jpg In short, the desktop background is not updating on the secondary display. (And if there is no secondary display, the primary display background stops updating.) Looking into the history, I found that this happened right after upgrading two packages: xserver-xorg-core xserver-common These were upgraded to 1.9.0-0ubuntu7.3. I'd like to downgrade these packages. How do I do that? How can I enable light sensor to automatically adjustment the LCD brightness without losing the keyboard backlight adjustment due to surrounding state?

  • The Uganda .NET Usergroup meeting for January 2011 - a look back.

    We had a very interesting meeting on Friday 28th last week. We had 10 attendees and two speakers. The first topic presented was Cloud Computing, presented by Allan Rwakatungu @arwakatungu who works with MTN Uganda. He gave a very brilliant outline of how Cloud computing and service oriented applications had begun changing the platform for operating business and the costs it saves because of scalability and elasticity. He went on to demonstrate the steps you would take if you are beginning a new Windows Azure project. He explained the history and evolution of the Windows Azure, SQL Azure and cloud services offered by Amazon and google.com. The attendees had many questions to ask (obviously), but they were all answered very well. We once again thank Allan, for taking time to prepare the presentation and demonstrating for us. We recorded a video on the entire presentation and after doing some editing we will publish it. One wish which was echoed by most members was that Microsoft should open the cloud services and development for Africa. Microsoft currently does not even have servers here in Africa and so far, that does not put African developers in the same platform as other developers in other continents. Now is the time considering the improvements in network speeds and joining of the Seacom network and broadband.   I presented on Parallelism and Multithreading using .NET 4.0, I also gave some details on the language changes in C# 5.0 and the async keyword and the TaskEx class. I explained the Task, Scheduling of parallel tasks and demonstrated problems that may arise from using parallelism inappropriately. I also demonstrated the performance improvements that may be achieved by taking advantage of multi-core processors. You may download the presentation on Parallelism and Multi-threading from here. The resolution of the meeting was that we should meet more than once a month and begin other activities which should be more fun. e.g. Geek Dinner, Geek Beer or CodeCamp.   • Dolphin search bar missing. How can i get it back?

    A while ago, my search bar went missing in dolphin. If the search toolbar is checked for view/unhide, nothing shows up. I noticed if i check and uncheck the button to hide/unhide it, a small, thin content-less bar slightly pushes the rest of the toolbar up. i tried reconfiguring with dpkg, purging and reinstalling, etc. i left it alone as i thought it would be fixed in an update, but today i upgraded daolphin and it's still gone. any thoughts?

  • How can I get back my deskopt? the left and top panels

    I installed the Ubuntu 12.10 and the driver for ATI Radeon HD 4330 (AMD Catalyst™ 12.6 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver) and the latest updates. After the restart now I can see only the deskopt backgrund and nothing more. No left or top panels. The resolution changed to 1024X768 and the graphic changed to: VESA:M92. What happened? Is there something wrong with the driver? How can I solve this? I'am a beginner, please answer according to this. Thank you!

  • Best way to redirect users back to the pretty URL who land on the _escaped_fragment_ one?

    I am working on an AJAX site and have successfully implemented Google's AJAX recommendation by creating _escape_fragment_ versions of each page for it to index. Thus each page has 2 URLs: pretty: example.com#!blog ugly: example.com?_escaped_fragment_=blog However, I have noticed in my analytics that some users are arriving on the site via the "ugly" URL and am looking for a clean way to redirect them to the pretty URL without impacting Google's ability to index the site. I have considered using a 301 redirect in the head but fear that Googlebot might try to follow it and end up in an endless loop. I have also considered using a JavaScript redirect that Googlebot wouldn't execute but fear that Google may interpret this as cloaking and penalize the website. Is there a good, clean, acceptable way to redirect real users away from the ugly URL if for some reason or another they end up arriving at the site that way?

  • webhost4life, please give me, my data back. My website will not work without the database.

    I have about 4 or 5 accounts with WebHost4life.com, these are all my customers that based on my recommendation have been hosting with webhost4life.com. A few days ago for some reason they decided to migrate one of these accounts to a new server. They moved everything created a new database on the new server but the new database is empty. after spending hours with Tech support they acknowledged the problem and assured me it will take up to an hour or two and my database will be populated with the data. this was about 7 hours ago. Oh by the way I pay extra for the backup plan and yes you guessed it, none of my backups are there. Needless to say I’m very scared and disappointed. No one is responding to my emails  or phone calls. After searching the web, I found out, this has happened before, in some cases it took them days to fix the problem and many never got it resolved and switched hosting companies, I would love to do that but I need my 2 GB database before I start shopping around for a new hosting company. Stay away from Webhost4life.

  • At what point should data be sent back to server?

    A good example would be the stackexchange "rate" button. When a post is upvoted the arrow changes color immediately. However there is a grace period for one to edit one's vote decision (oops! voted by mistake?). Is the upvote action processed immediately or does is only process after a set time period, or when the user leaves the page? How exactly is this rating processed? What is the standard for handling dynamic page edits (e.g. stackexchange rating, facebook posts?)
