Hardware asset management systems

I need to track a bunch of specialized testing tools, They are hardware devices used for testing other equipement. Each device has a serial number and is sent out for use in testing. Occasionally they break and have to be sent to the manufacture for repair. I'm looking for an open source application (preferably a webapp) to help manage them. Right now we're using Excel and it's not scaling as we get more tools. They aren't computers so all the standard IT asset management systems don't really fit the bill. I found h-harmony, but that project seems dead?

Terminal Services - MS Access Frequently "Not Responding"

Exposition: We use a program built in MS Access that I serve via Terminal Services. I just installed a new TS Server with a Quad Core 2.6GHz Xeon, 8GB RAM, and 4 SATA drives in a RAID 0. In installed Server 2008 R2 (64bit obviously). It's only role is TS. The problem: With just a few sessions (under 10), I start getting frequent Not Responding messages in each session. When it happens, the users aren't doing anything particularly taxing, just form navigation and simple insert queries. I can live with some stalls, but it is visually jarring in WS08 because the screen goes gray, and it presents a dialog offering to wait or close with some other options. Questions: Any suggestions for improving performance and reducing hangs? Is it possible to disable the dialog (always wait) and screen graying?

Oracle licensing /pricing ?

Question: I'd like to download Oracle 11g database for evaluation purposes. Now I found this link for downloads: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html But it says one must register 'for accessing premium contents'. But in the same time, it looks like one can download the full database for free. But surely, Oracle doesn't give it for free, but in the registration, there's no mention of any cost/fees, or any billing address. Is this registration free, or as 'premium' suggests, will you get a bill for it if you do (supposed you enter true data) ? Or how does Oracle handle licensing/payment ? I can not see any price tag there anywhere, nor any information on it on that registration page.

How do developers verify that software requirement changes in one system do not violate a requirement of downstream software systems?

In my work, I do requirements gathering, analysis and design of business solutions in addition to coding. There are multiple software systems and packages, and developers are expected to work on any of them, instead of being assigned to make changes to only 1 system or just a few systems. How developers ensure they have captured all of the necessary requirements and resolved any conflicting requirements? An example of this type of scenario: Bob the developer is asked to modify the problem ticket system for a hypothetical utility repair business. They contract with a local utility company to provide this service. The old system provides a mechanism for an external customer to create a ticket indicating a problem with utility service at a particular address. There is a scheduling system and an invoicing system that is dependent on this data. Bob's new project is to modify the ticket placement system to allow for multiple addresses to entered by a landlord or other end customer with multiple properties. The invoicing system bills per ticket, but should be modified to bill per address. What practices would help Bob discover that the invoicing system needs to be changed as well? How might Bob discover what other systems in his company might need to be changed in order to support the new changes\business model? Let's say there is a documented specification for each system involved, but there are many systems and Bob is not familiar with all of them. End of example. We're often in this scenario, and we do have design reviews but management places ultimate responsibility for any defects (business process or software process) on the developer who is doing the design and the work. Some organizations seem to be better at this than others. How do they manage to detect and solve conflicting or incomplete requirements across software systems? We currently have a lot of tribal knowledge and just a few developers who understand the entire business and software chain. This seems highly ineffective and leads to problems at the requirements level.

Need to combine a color, mask, and sprite layer in a shader

My task: to display a sprite using different team colors. I have a sprte graphic, part of which has to be displayed as a team color. The color isn't 'flat', i.e. it shades from brighter to darker. I can't "pre-build" the graphics because there are just too many, so I have to generate them at runtime. I've decided to use a shader, and supply it with a texture consisting of the team color, a texture consisting of a mask (black=no color, white=full color, gray=progressively dimmed color), and the sprite grapic, with the areas where the team color shows being transparent. I don't really understand how the manipulations work, so I'm just thrashing around, producing lots of different incorrect effects. So given tex1 through tex3, what calcs do I do in order to take the color (tex1), mask it (tex2), and apply the result to the unit if it's not zero? And would I be better off to make the mask just on/off (white/black) and put the color shading in the unit graphic?

Windows7 x64 clipboard failure

Hi. I'm using windows 7 x64 and i need to work with citrix client. Unfortunately my clipboard stops working after 5-10 minutes with citrix apps. I can't copy/paste anything. But on citrix clipboard is still working. Problem disappears after rebooting computer. But it's takes too much time. Is there any way to restart clipboard process or fix this problem without rebooting ? Thanks ! UPD.1 Copy/Paste is broken only on my local computer. It means that when I'm pressing ctrl+c (also when doing the same with mouse) ctrl+v pastes nothing (in GUI menu it's highlighted with gray - disabled). Occasionally it repairs itself when I'm starting rebooting: nsd.exe crashes with some exception, reboot stops and then it works again. But I'm still not sure that problem is in nsd.exe (Lotus notes)

A lot has happened since last post!!!!!!!!!

And I mean a lot! First off had two interviews (one was selling insurance) and other installing cable. I have more hope for the cable one. Getting more emails from my job search engines (having problems with going through them and applying for those jobs, I know I can do). It seems the more I apply to, the more job emails pop up in my in box. But at the same time I am fighting feelings of worthlessness (18 months and no job). It is putting a strain on my marriage (We had had blow out over a broken drinking glass since I last posted). But, at the same time, I am fighting mad about (a figure of speech, really) not having a job. Look just because I am over 55 and have gray hair. It does not mean, my brain is dead or I can not longer trouble shoot a router or circuit or LAN issue. Or that I can do “IT” work at all. And I could prove this if; some one would give me at job. Come on try me for 90 days at min. wage. I know you will end up keeping me (hope fully at normal pay) around. Is any one hearing me…come on take up the challenge!

Firefox 15 hangs with Ubuntu kernel update

I recently ran updates and it told me that in order to get those updates I had to update my kernel. I did that and also updated Firefox to 15. Since then Firefox hangs/gray screens sites I go to. This lasts anywhere from 5-10 seconds to 2-3 minutes. I have restarted Firefox with all add-ons disabled but it still did the same thing. I found a bug report on Launchpad that sounded like what was happening with me, but I haven't received any error codes, just the hanging/frozen screens. Also it seems that it ups my CPU making the rest of Ubuntu lag while Firefox is hung. I would guess the cause is a conflict between the updated kernel and the updated Firefox, but I'm still fairly new at Ubuntu and not sure where to go from here. Is there anything else to try? When I ripped my Kill Bill DVD I used handbrake and put it into a single avi. I realize that I didn't get the subtitles, so what I want to do is convert the AVI to MKV and put the subtitles in the mkv. How do I go about doing this without losing any qualityI don't care about compressing or anything ju? I don't care about compressing or anything, just want to change the container. If handbrake can do it, I'd prefer to use that since I already have it.

Convert a colored PDF into a white/black

On Debian Sid, I have a PDF with a blue background and yellow font. I've searched a lot on Super User but i haven't found anything useful for me. I have tried to convert the PDF into a grayscale one with: gs -o grayscale.pdf -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sColorConversionStrategy=Gray -sProcessColorModel=DeviceGray -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 colored.pdf The problem is that I obtain a PDF whit white fonts and dark grey background so I cannot print it. After that I tried: convert -density 96x96 gs2.pdf -density 96x96 -negate -compress zip inv.pdf I got a PDF with black fonts (and this is okay) and grey background (and this is not okay). What can I do to obtain a PDF with white background and black fonts?

Windows 7 won't show SATA Hard Drive in My Computer

I have clean install of Windows 7 x64 with two SATA hard drives. When I open My Computer, I can see only the drive where Windows are installed (and all partitions), but I don't see the other one. When I go to disk manager, I can see that both drives are detected and the one that I don't see in My Computer is also marked as Primary, but when I right click, the Open and Browse are gray. I also checked drives with gparted on live Ubuntu and they both seem to work correctly, the second drive wasn't marked hidden or anything else. Before installing Windows 7, I had Windows XP, where both drives worked properly.

Desktop forgets theme?

I am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox (on a Windows 7 host). Several times now, the top-level menu bar, the task bar — and seemingly every system dialog — have forgotten the out-of-the-box "Ambiance" theme they conform to when I first installed the system. Window captions still preserve the theme, but pretty much nothing else does. I have searched high and low on Google for assistance with this problem. Everything I've found suggests either running some gconf reset or deleting .gconf* .gnome* and other similar directories. I have followed all this advice and nothing works. I still get a boring Windows-95-style gray 3D look and feel. On previous occasions, after much messing around I've given up and rebooted the VM instance, and been pleasantly suprised to see the original "Ambience" theme restored throughout the UI, but invariably it disappears again some time later, usually after a reboot, so I can never figure out what I did that broke it. Here's a sample from Ubuntu's site of what I want it to look like. And here's a screenshot of my system as it currently looks. Also note that my GNOME Terminals normally have a nice purple semi-translucent look, and as can be seen from the screenshot, they are now just a solid matte white. This last time (just yesterday), trying numerous combinations all the usual tricks and rebooting several times hasn't fixed it, so here I am on SU wondering: How do I recover the out-of-the-box theme for my Gnome/Ubuntu desktop, noting that blowing away all config files — as suggested in many places online — fails to achieve this? It might help to know that it seems to fail either after I resize the VM instance, forcing the Ubuntu desktop to resize itself, or after I play around with Compiz settings. I haven't been able to figure out which of these it is, and it could be neither. Given the amount of pain I have had to go through to get things back to normal (and given that I am at a loss as to how to do so), it has proven difficult to definitively isolate the cause.

Why has Google toolbar has stopped working in Firefox 3.6.8?

Yesterday, I noticed that my Google Toolbar has stopped working. The toolbar is still there, but it is completely blank (no buttons or input fields, just a gray strip of nothing). In addition to this, tooltips have stopped working. If I disable the toolbar, the tooltips return to normal, so that particular problem definitely seems to be a side effect of the toolbar. I tried disabling all my other add-ons, but that made no difference. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Google Toolbar. That made no difference. I haven't tried reinstalling the browser, but I'm reluctant to do that unless absolutely necessary. Am I the only one having this problem? Any ideas how to fix? Note: I'm running Windows XP SP3. I'm using Google Toolbar version 7.1.20100723W.

Finding a laptop to fit my spec's

I have a small list of characteristics that are required for a new laptop and have been looking for websites where I can specify my requirements and see which laptops fit the bill. I want to specify OS/RAM/HDD size/CD drive/screen resolution/battery life. I have found several sites so far where I can specify everything except battery life. Does such a site exist? I know that this is not a shopping site - but before any moderator rushes to close this question - please note that I am not asking "where do I buy this laptop" - merely what laptop fits this specs. I don't even care what country the website is based in.

One thing I want from a text editor is the ability to handle Unicode Input Method Editors in a "normal way", across the board. For Ubuntu, the "normal way" is via IBus. However, emacs does not support IBus "off the shelf". I found a launchpad project: IBus client for GNU Emacs: ibus-el. I've installed ibus-el and set it up as per the Customize section of this emacswiki IBusMode page. I included the suggested "toggle" keybinding: ;; Use s-SPC to toggle input status It seems to have installed okay, but I have no idea how to invoke IBus and switch IMEs. s-SPC doesn't fire up the IBus language panel... How to limit click'n'drag movement to an area?

I apologize for the somewhat generic title. I'm really don't have much clue about how to accomplish what I'm trying to do, which is making it harder even to research a possible solution. I'm trying to implement a path marker of sorts (maybe there's a most suitable name for it, but this is the best I could come up with). In front of the player there will be a path marker, which will determine how the player will move once he finishes planning his turn. The player may click and drag the marker to the position they choose, but the marker can only be moved within a defined working area (the gray bit). So I'm now stuck with two problems: First of all, how exactly should I define that workable area? I can imagine maybe two vectors that have the player as a starting point to form the workable angle, and maybe those two arcs could come from circles that have their center where the player is, but I definetly don't know how to put this all together. And secondly, after I've defined the area where the marker can be placed, how can I enforce that the marker should only stay within that area? For example, if the player clicks and drags the marker around, it may move freely within the working area, but must not leave the boundaries of the area. So for example, if the player starts dragging the marker upwards, it will move upwards until it hits he end of the working area (first diagram below), but if after that the player starts dragging sideways, the marker must follow the drag while still within the area (second diagram below). How to use "Join Clip" in iMovie'09?

I have been using iMovie'09 for two days only. I need to edit some videos and make a DVD for a friend. It happens to me that I want to join two clips together to form one continuous clip, so when I export the video to iDVD, they won't be treat as two different chapters. The most obvious way to do so is to choose Edit-Join Clip, but that menu item was always gray out when I chose two adjacent clips. I tried to highlight two/three adjacent clips, two apart clips etc, but it is still grayed out. I googled for a while but it seems no one knows, anyone knows how to use the "Join Clip"?

Doubling the DPI with a shader?

I'm developing a game where the map is generated with Perlin Noise, but on the CPU. I am generating some perlin noise onto a texture with a small size, and then I stretch it out to the whole screen to simulate a map. The reason for the CPU generating the noise is that I want it to look the same on all devices. Now, here's the end-result. Please ignore the bullets and the explosion on the picture. What matters is the background (the black/gray pixels) and the ground (the brown-ish pixels). They are rendered to the same texture through perlin noise. However, this doesn't look very pretty. So I was wondering if it would be possible to double the amount of pixels using a shader, and rounding edges at the same time? In other words, improve the DPI. I'm using SharpDX with DirectX 11, through its toolkit feature. But any help that'll lead me in the right direction (for instance through HLSL) would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

How can I change the color of this part of Nautilus for my Ambiance theme modification?

I am currently messing around with Ambiance, trying to give Nautilus a dark sidebar (because I think it looks much better that way, especially with the current look having the dark-colored breadcrumbs clashing horribly with the light-colored sidebar). I have zero experience and knowledge of how to create GTK+ themes, and I couldn't find any documentation online, so I just made a copy of the folder for Ambiance under /usr/share/themes, renamed it "Ambiance Dark Sidebar" and just started messing with color values. As shown below, I found the value in nautilus.css needed to be tweaked to create the dark sidebar, but there is still one part that stubbornly stays light gray that I want to change so it matches the rest better (I'm not sure what the proper terminology is here, so I just provided a picture and marked it in red). Does anyone know what I need to do to change the color of this part so it matches the rest of the sidebar better? I already know from seeing themes like Adwaita Dark that this should be possible, but even after poking around in that I didn't find anything that seemed to help. Here are the contents of the files I modified in the theme folder Ambiance Dark Sidebar, stored alongside Ambiance in /usr/share/themes: index.theme gtk-3.0/apps/nautilus.css
