  I need a solution to store my big files (50MB+ each). Currently I am using an european dedicated server (100MBits) with 8000GB/motnh at 60USD. I would like to use a cloud service that autmatically fetches my files from my server the first time users request it (like a classic cdn) (So I can have all files stored within 1 server) I was looking at Amazon CloudFront and, to get the same bandwidth 8'000 GB/month, I have to pay like 2000 USD vs my 60 USD of my dedicated server. Is there a cheaper alternative?

  Hello. I am working on a distributed application which has two components. One is written in standard C++ (not managed C++) and the other one is written in C#. Both are communicating via a message bus. I have a situation in which I need to pass objects from C++ to C# application and for this I need to serialize those objects in C++ and de-serialize them in C# (something like marshaling/un-marshaling in .NET). I need to perform this serialization in binary and not in XML (due to performance reasons). I have used Boost.Serialization to do this when both ends were implemented in C++ but now that I have a .NET application on one end, Boost.Serialization is not a viable solution. I am looking for a solution that allows me to perform (de)serialization across C++ and .NET boundary i.e., cross platform binary serialization. I know I can implement the (de)serialization code in a C++ dll and use P/Invoke in the .NET application, but I want to keep that as a last resort. Also, I want to know if I use some standard like gzip, will that be efficient? Are there any other alternatives to gzip? What are the pros/cons of them? Thanks

  I'm trying to read binary data using C#. I have all information about the layout of the data in the files I want to read. I'm able to read the data "chunk by chunk", i.e. getting the first 40 bytes of data converting it to a string, get the next 40 bytes, ... Since there are at least three slighlty different version of the data, I would like to read the data directly into a struct. It just feels so much more right than by reading it "line by line". I have tried the following approach but to no avail:StructType aStruct; int count = Marshal.SizeOf(typeof(StructType)); byte[] readBuffer = new byte[count]; BinaryReader reader = new BinaryReader(stream); readBuffer = reader.ReadBytes(count); GCHandle handle = GCHandle.Alloc(readBuffer, GCHandleType.Pinned); aStruct = (StructType) Marshal.PtrToStructure(handle.AddrOfPinnedObject(), typeof(StructType)); handle.Free(); The stream is an opened FileStream from which I have began to read from. I get an AccessViolationException when using Marshal.PtrToStructure. The stream contains more information than I'm trying to read since I'm not interested in data at the end of the file. • Getting a binary file from resource in C#

  Hello, I am having a bit of a problem, I am trying to get a PDF as a resource in my application. At this point I have a fillable PDF that I have been able to store as a file next to the binary, but now I am trying to embed the PDF as a resource in the binary. byte[] buffer; try { s = typeof(BattleTracker).Assembly.GetManifestResourceStream("libReports.Resources.DAForm1594.pdf"); buffer = new byte[s.Length]; int read = 0; do { read = s.Read(buffer, read, 32768); } while (read > 0); } catch (Exception e) { throw new Exception("Error: could not import report:", e); } // read existing PDF document PdfReader r = new PdfReader( // optimize memory usage buffer, null ); Every time I run the code I get an error saying "Rebuild trailer not found. Original Error: PDF startxref not found" When I was just opening the file via a path to the static file in my directory it worked fine. I have tried using different encodings UTF-8, UTF-32, UTF-7, ASCII, etc etc.... As a side note I had the same problem with getting a Powerpoint file as a resource, I was finally able to fix that problem by converting the Powerpoint to xml and using that. I have considered doing the same for the PDF but I am referencing elements by field name which does not seem to work with XML PDFs. Can anyone help me out with this? Thanks in advance!

• rails, mysql charsets & encoding: binary

  Hi, i've a rails app that runs using utf-8. It uses a mysql database, all tables with mysql's default charset and collation (i.e. latin1). Therefore the latin1 tables contain utf-8 data. Sure, that's not nice, but i'm not really interested in it. Everything works fine, because the connection encoding is latin1 as well and therefore mysql does not convert between charsets. Only one problem: i need a utf-8 fulltext index for one table: mysql> show create table autocompletephrases; ... AUTO_INCREMENT=310095 DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci But: I don't want to convert between charsets in my rails app. Therefore I would like to know if i could just set config/database.yml production: adapter: mysql >>>> encoding: binary ... which just calls SET NAMES 'binary' when connecting to mySQL. It looks like it works for my case, because i guess it forces mysql to -not- convert between charsets (mySQL docs). Does anyone knows about problems about doing this? Any side-effects? Or do you have any other suggestions? But i'd like to avoid converting my whole database to utf-8. Many Thanks! Benjamin

  I'm going to be starting a project soon that requires support for large-ish binary files. I'd like to use Ruby on Rails for the webapp, but I'm concerned with the BLOB support. In my experience with other languages, frameworks, and databases, BLOBs are often overlooked and thus have poor, difficult, and/or buggy functionality. Does RoR spport BLOBs adequately? Are there any gotchas that creep up once you're already committed to Rails? BTW: I want to be using PostgreSQL and/or MySQL as the backend database. Obviously, BLOB support in the underlying database is important. For the moment, I want to avoid focusing on the DB's BLOB capabilities; I'm more interested in how Rails itself reacts. Ideally, Rails should be hiding the details of the database from me, and so I should be able to switch from one to the other. If this is not the case (ie: there's some problem with using Rails with a particular DB) then please do mention it. UPDATE: Also, I'm not just talking about ActiveRecord here. I'll need to handle binary files on the HTTP side (file upload effectively). That means getting access to the appropriate HTTP headers and streams via Rails. I've updated the question title and description to reflect this.

  admit me describe my questions in situation-oriented way: assume IE is still the dominate web browser(the firefox have document for binary processing): the XMLHttpRequest.responseText or XMLHttpRequest.responseXML in ie desire txt or xml/xhtml/html,but what about the server response the xmlHttprequest whith MIME TYPE application/octet ? would the response string all little than 256 ?(every char of that string < 256), thanks very much for a straight answer, i have no webserver env,so i don't know how to test it out. because use txt or xml have a issue of character set encode, and i don't know how to process #[[[CDDATA node of one encoded xml(ex : utf-8,ascii,gb18030) with javascript, when i getNodeText, does the docObj return me byte or decoded char ? if it was decoded char which according to the header indicated charSet in the httpresponse , it would be all wrong. to avoid mess up with charSet ,i would like the server to response octet data and force strings data to be encoded as utf-8 but another charSet in the binary format. if the response is octal, so i guess the browser would not try to decode the response"txt" does this weird? or miss understanding the fundamental things? EDIT: I believe the question is asking this: Can Javascript safely process strings that aren't encoded in Unicode? What are the problems with trying to do so? • Bug on submitted app binary but not in the simulator - CALayer position contains NaN

  I submitted my app to the App Store where is ready to download. I've since then received some interesting crash reports when people select an image from the ImagePicker in one of my views. This bug (see below) makes the app crash. I was wondering 2 things. Can anyone spot the problem in the code below? How do you deal with bugs that are only in the App Binary but do not show up when trying to recreate them on the dev environment? - I can make the app crash with the Binary that is on the app store but when I do the same on the simulator or on my test phone the app works perfectly..   Ok heres my situation. I have a website project that has more than 50,000 unimportant files (to development) in some directories. /website.com/files/1.txt /website.com/files/2.txt /website.com/files/3.txt /website.com/files/etc.txt The stuff in /files is already in the repo. I want to delete all the files in /files on my local copy but I want git to ignore it so it doesn't delete them when I do a pull on the web server. Any ideas?

• Run Sinatra via a Rake Task to Generate Static Files?

  I'm not sure I can put this correctly but I'll give it a shot. I want to use Sinatra to generate static html files once I am ready to deploy an application, so the resulting final website would be pure static HTML. During development, however, I want everything to be dynamic so I can use Haml and straight Ruby code to make things fast/dry/clear. I don't want to use Jekyll or some of the other static site generators out there because they don't have as much power as Sinatra. So all I basically need to be able to do is run a rake task such as: rake sinatra:generate_static_files. That would run the render commands for Haml and everything else, and the result would be written to files. My question is, how do I do that with Sinatra in a Rake task? Can I do it in a Rake task? The problem is, I don't know how to include the Sinatra::Application in the rake task... The only other way I could think of doing it is using net/http to access a URL that does all of that, but that seems like overkill. Any ideas how on to solve this?

• How do I create an encrypted file system inside a file?

  Recently i've found this interesting tutorial: http://flossstuff.wordpress.com/2011/08/07/using-a-file-as-a-storage-device/ It explains how to create an empty file, format it as ext4, and mount it as a device. I'd like to know if it can be created as an encrypted ext4 file system. I've tried using palimpsest (the disk utility found in System menu) to format the already created file system but it doesn't works as it detects the file system being used. If I try to unmount the file system, it won't work neither because it doesn't detect the device (since it's not a real device like a hardrive or a usb drive). So my question is, is there an option to create the file system encrypted from the begining? I've used these commands: Create an empty file 200Mb size: dd if=/dev/zero of=/path/to/file bs=1M count=200 Make it ext4: mkfs -t ext4 file Mount it in a folder inside my home: sudo mount -o loop file /path/to/mount_point Is there any way the mkfs command creates the ext4 encrypted asking for a decryption password? I'm planing to use this as a way to encrypt files inside Dropbox. Thanks for your time.

  Im a first-time user to Ubuntu-12.04 with WUBI installation. My NoteBook Information : Dell vostro 3450 : i5 2410m, 3 gb ram, intel hd3000, amd 6630m hybrid. Surfing and playing games works flawlessly, however, I'm having huge problems when installing applications and generally copying and moving files. When doing so, system is significantly slower and freezes quite often (Firefox gets bluish, sometimes even black n white). I would say that Ubuntu allocates too much resources on file transfers and installing, but even these tasks are very slow. Here is very specific example : today, i tried to move 6 GB file from win 7 installation. It was good at first, i jumped to firefox but after a while firefox started to randomly turn bluish and mouse was randomly stopping working. It was gradually worse and worse and it got to a point when firefox black n whited and mouse wasn't working at all. I raged and went for some meal, when i got back screen was black. It probably unlogged me due to inactivity, when i pushed random button to bring screen to life i had to wait few minutes to let it show me only my screen background. No log in screen, just background and working mouse. NoteBook fan was working at 100 % so I assumed that file transfer was going on and I left it to work. Nothing then changed for a full hour so I hard rebooted it. File transfer unsuccessful, It transfered hardly 2 gigs. Is this normal ? What to do in these situations ? It didn't let me load system manager and not even terminal. Thanks.

• Versioning SharePoint binary Workflow ASPX task forms

  Hello. As noted by some developers, workflow versioning is somekind of headache in SharePoint. I`m wondering is there a way I can version my aspx forms? For sure, i can version code behind assemblies, but if markup changes for any of my files in LAYOUTS folder? Is there versioning available for files or do i have to choose new filename for my form? Sorry, i should have been more specific. Yes, i have files under version control (i can restore previous versions etc), but i`m not talking about this kind of version control. But by deploying new Workflow Version, i must not delete old one, because it is still running on many items in SharePoint, but rather , as noted in previous links, deploy new one so i don't break execution of workflows. But workflows will still break if i don't preserve old aspx forms used by users to interact with workflows. So i must ensure that Assemblies with old version numbers used by old workflow exists (this one is ok, i just changed assembly version number and deployed to GAC) I must ensure that old workflow still uses old aspx form used users to interact with workflow, but new workflow version should use new aspx form with more options (how to do this?).

• JDesktop Integration Components binary has stopped working

  I googled it but not able to find the solution. I am working on swing APIs org.jdesktop.jdic.browser.*. When I am clicking on link displayed in java browser created using bove APIs, it gives windows error pop-up message: JDesktop Integration Components binary has stopped working JDK version I am using is: 1.6.0_31-b05. Please let me know work around or show to solve issue. Thanks in advance.
