• PDF permissions management with ASP.NET - Timeout Issue

  I have a website that has several PDF files. I need to have quite a few of them locked down with the standard ASP.NET authentication (in a folder with web.config that denies anonymous users). I set PDF files to get handled by the ASP.NET worker process and added: <add type="System.Web.StaticFileHandler" path="*.pdf" verb="*" /> to my web.config, but for some reason they hang when downloading. I've seen this issue before on an old server, and for the live of me I can't remember what I did to solve it. Does anyone have any idea? Thanks.

• Are rails timers reliable when using Net::HTTP?

  Hi All. When reading data from a potentially slow website, I want to ensure that get_response can not hang, and so added a timer to timeout after x seconds. So far, so good. I then read http://ph7spot.com/musings/system-timer which illustrates that in certain situations timer.rb doesn't work due to ruby's implementation of threads. • problem running system.net.webclient and process.start off a control event

  The following code causes my vs 2008 wpf project to hang, I'm not sure why. Both Part 1 and Part 2 work perfectly fine independently, but when I run them together on an control event (click a button for example) the program hangs. I've also tried shell execute for part 2 - same results. However, this code when run within the form loaded event works fine. Any insights would be truly appreciated. • How to free virtual memory ?

  I have a crawler application (with C#) that downloads pages from web . The application take more virtual memory , even i dispose every object and even use GC.Collect() . This , have 10 thread and each thread has a socket that downloads pages . I use dispose method and even use GC.Collect() in my application , but in 3 hour my application take 500 MB on virtual memory (500 MB on private bytes in Process explorer) . Then my system will be hang and i should restart my pc . Is there any way that i use to free vitual memory ? Thanks .

• How to align centre a custom label in highcharts

  See a jsfiddle example I am trying to align the custom label in the /labels/items JSON element to hang right under the title and subtitle. Playing with firebug I can alter the SVG text element for the label and add text-align='middle' and change the x='' attribute to have the same value as the title's x attribute. This makes it perfectly align under the title and stay there when resized but I can't figure out how to make the highcharts library generate this source. Maybe there is a better way to add another label under the subtitle?

By the way I made some variables that take the screensize and half it to find a point to spit out the squares, but when I try to use it, it makes a weird effect :/ Try switching the list i have in the newbyte() function with the halfScreen variable and see it freak out o.O thank you

• Action Controller: Exception - ID not found

  Hi Everyone, I am slowly getting the hang of Rails and thanks to a few people I now have a basic grasp of the database relations and associations etc. You can see my previous questions here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2714621/rails-database-relationships I have setup my applications models with all of the necessary has_one and has_many :through etc. but when I go to add a kase and choose from a company from the drop down list - it doesnt seem to be assigning the company ID to the kase. • PhoneGap's vibrate() and beep() functions break in iPhone, Android emulators

  I have a PhoneGap app that I'm testing on webOS, Android, and iPhone. I'm using physical devices as well as emulators (the ones that come with their respective SDKs, not the PhoneGap emulator). Part of the code uses the navigator.notification.vibrate() and navigator.notification.beep() functions. All the physical devices I'm using either perform the behavior or ignore it if they're not capable (e.g., the iPod can't vibrate). However, the emulators behave differently. The Android emulator kills the app whenever the beep() function is called. The iPhone emulator causes the app to hang whenever the vibrate() function is called. Is there any way to get the emulators to ignore those function calls when they are unable to execute them? That is, is there a way to get them to degrade gracefully so I can test the app both places without having to modify the code specifically for the emulators?

• Windsor Container: How to specify a public property should not be filled by the container?

  When Instantiating a class, Windsor by default treats all public properties of the class as optional dependencies and tries to satisfy them. In my case, this creates a rather complicated circular dependency which causes my application to hang. How can I explicitly tell Castle Windsor that it should not be trying to satisfy a public property? I assume there must be an attribute to that extent. I can't find it however so please let me know the appropriate namespace/assembly. If there is any way to do this without attributes (such as Xml Configuration or configuration via code) that would be preferable since the specific library where this is happening has to date not needed a dependency on castle.

• In Haskell, how can you sort a list of infinite lists of strings?

  So basically, if I have a (finite or infinite) list of (finite or infinite) lists of strings, is it possible to sort the list by length first and then by lexicographic order, excluding duplicates? A sample input/output would be: Input: [["a", "b",...], ["a", "aa", "aaa"], ["b", "bb", "bbb",...], ...] Output: ["a", "b", "aa", "bb", "aaa", "bbb", ...] I know that the input list is not a valid haskell expression but suppose that there is an input like that. I tried using merge algorithm but it tends to hang on the inputs that I give it. Can somebody explain and show a decent sorting function that can do this? If there isn't any function like that, can you explain why? In case somebody didn't understand what I meant by the sorting order, I meant that shortest length strings are sorted first AND if one or more strings are of same length then they are sorted using < operator. • Reading data from a socket

  I am having issues reading data from a socket. Supposedly, there is a server socket that is waiting for clients to connect. When I write a client to connect() to the server socket/port, it appears that I am connected. But when I try to read() data that the server is supposedly writing on the socket, the read() function hangs until the server app is stopped. Why would a read() call ever hang if the socket is connected? I believe that I am not ever really connected to the socket/port but I can't prove it, b/c the connect() call did not return an error. The read() call is not returning an error either, it is just never returning at all.

• Is it actually possible to connect to ActiveMQ via XMPP and query/browse queues using "AciveMQ.Agen

  I tried what I think are 4 most popular XMPP (aka "Jabber") clients (Spark, Pidgin, Psi, Pandion) to connect to ActiveMQ instance (Apache ActiveMQ ver. 5.3.0) on XMMP connector with an idea to use the "AciveMQ.Agent chatroom" for querying queues/etc and no success at all Some of them fail with 'Unknown error', some don't fail but kind of "hang"... interestingly, some communication does indeed reach the ActiveMQ side, because when I close a client it spits an exception "could not close" or something to that effect... and if I try "register new user" option (present on most clients" the ActiveMQ also spits some most cryptic warning message But I was never able to get to the point when I could see or specify "ActiveMQ.Agent" as chatroom and issue any commands... Before I waste any more time on this curious feature, I would like to hear whether anyone had any success with it? Thank you! PS: BTW, the book "ActiveMQ in Action book" http://www.manning.com/snyder/ shows that it is apparently works and is very easy using some Mac client (AdiumX), but I wanted it on a Windows PC ;)

• SQL - Two foreign keys that have a dependency between them

  The current structure is as follows: Table RowType: RowTypeID Table RowSubType: RowSubTypeID FK_RowTypeID Table ColumnDef: FK_RowTypeID FK_RowSubTypeID (nullable) In short, I'm mapping column definitions to rows. In some cases, those rows have subtype(s), which will have column definitions specific to them. Alternatively, I could hang those column definitions that are specific to subtypes off their own table, or I could combine the data in RowType and RowSubType into one table and work with a single ID, but I'm not sure either is a better solution (if anything, I'd lean towards the latter, as we mostly end up pulling ColumnDefs for a given RowType/RowSubType). Is the current design SQL Blasphemy? If I keep the current structuree, how do I maintain that if RowSubTypeID is specified in ColumnDef, that it must correspond to the RowType specified by RowTypeID? Should I try to enforce this with a trigger or am I missing a simple redesign that would solve the problem?

• How to cancel a web service call if it's not responding

  Hi, I have a web page (.aspx) that calls a third party web service to get some data. It usually takes couple of seconds to get the response back, and then the rest of the page will load. Occasionally the call gets stuck either due to the web service is down, or internet connection, etc., the page just hang there and will not load. My questions is: 1) Is there a way to abort/cancel the web service call after a set amount of time? 2) Is it even possible to verify the status of the web service before calling it? Thanks.

• ASP.Net: Finding the cause of OutOfMemoryExpcetions

  I trying to track down the cause of an OutOfMemory for a website. This site has ~12,000 .aspx pages and the last time it crashed I captured a memory dump using adplus. After some investigation I found a lot of heap fragmentation, there are around 100MB of Free blocks which can't be assigned. Digging deeper one of the Large Object Heaps is fragmented and the causes seems to be String interning as described [here][1] Could this be caused by the number of pages in the site? As they are all compiled they sit in memory and by looking at the dump they are interned and PINNED which I think means they stick around for a while. I would find this odd as there are many sites with more pages, but dynamic compilation could account for the growth in memory. What other methods are there for finding the cause of the memory leak? • FileSystemWatcher keeping parent directory

  I am using FileSystemWatcher to monitor a folder, and it seems to be preventing the folder's parent from being deleted. For example, I have the file structure: C:\Root\FolderToWatch\... with the FileSystemWatcher targeting FolderToWatch. While my program is running, if I go to Windows Explorer and try to delete Root, I get an error "Cannot delete Root: access is denied". However, if I delete FolderToWatch FIRST, I can then delete Root without incident. (Needless to say, if the FileSystemWatcher is not enabled, I have no problem deleting either folder.) What gives? Why does the FileSystemWatcher hang onto it's target's parent like that? How (if possible) can I stop this behavior? I would like the user to be able to freely move or delete directories in Windows Explorer.

• NSAutoreleasePool carrying across methods?

  I'm building an iPhone application where I detach some threads to do long-running work in the background so as not to hang the UI. I understand that threads need NSAutoreleasePool instances for memory management. What I'm not sure about is if the threaded method calls another method - does that method also need an NSAutoreleasePool? Example code: - (void)primaryMethod { [self performSelectorInBackground:@selector(threadedMethod) withObject:nil]; } - (void)threadedMethod { NSAutoreleasePool *aPool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; // Some code here [self anotherMethod]; // Maybe more code here [aPool drain]; } - (void)anotherMethod { // More code here } The reason I ask is I'm receiving errors that objects are being autoreleased with no pool in place, and are "just leaking." I've seen other questions where people didn't have autorelease pools in place at all, and I understand why an autorelease pool is needed. I'm specifically interested in finding out whether an autorelease pool created in (in this example) threadedMethod applies to objects created in anotherMethod.

  Hi there, For some reason when I try to use "append" while inside an FTP script, the ftp client appears to hang. I've tried all sorts of different variations (for example, including the destination filee and not, using quotes and not), and all I ever get is a "No such file or directory" error (and I KNOW it's there) or it hangs on an 200 Request OK and never does anything. ftp> open ibm.some_server Connected to ibm.some_server 230 USER1 is logged on. Working directory is "USER1.".   Asserts can't be caught. This is good because some errors I don't want to be wrapped in try/catch, at least not on the development server. But Asserts seem awefully dangerous. • Spawning Process Never Finishes on ASP.NET Page

  The code below spawns the process and sits forever, never finishing. It doesn't matter what process I run. If I use delegates it doesn't work either. It just hangs up in my dev and on the test enviornment. Also, if I use Shell with Wait it does the same thing. If I set wait to false in either approach it works just fine. It's ASP.NET 2.0 VB.NET DotNetNuke 4.0 on Windows Server 2003. I can't even phathom why this would hang up. UPDATE: It causes the CPU to throttle up but it's not running anything. It's like there's something weird going on in the threading. • Java Swing app hangs when run in normal mode but runs fine in debug mode

  I am writing a basic Java application with a Swing front-end. Basically it loads some data from a Derby database via Apache Cayenne and then displays it in a JTable. I'm doing my development in Eclipse and I don't think it's important but I'm using Maven for dependencies. Now this works fine when I run using Debug but it seems to hang the display thread when I use the Run button. I've done a thread dump and I'm not 100% certain but everything looks good. I used Java VisualVM and the threads look fine there as well. Strangely it seems to work intermittently. It's pretty consistent though and easy to reproduce. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all out of them.

• Maven and db4o dependency

  I'm intrigued to test new frameworks in the Java world, and decided to create a new project that takes advantage of Maven and db4o. I'm starting to get a hang of Maven, but I have a hard time adding db4o as a dependency to the project. First problem is that db4o doesn't exist in the official Maven repositories. Next up comes the problem that db4o seem to have recently restructured their whole site's URI:s, so I'm getting 'site not found' messages all the time when I try to navigate their site. I found somewhere a potential Maven repository that should be at https://source.db4o.com/maven but I get all the time "Error reading archetype catalog https://source.db4o.com/maven Unable to locate resource in repository" when I try to access it. So, any suggestions on how I'll get db4o up through Maven? I've managing Maven through Eclipse with the M2Eclipse plugin.

  I'm not sure that it's not implemented yet, I hope that it is. But I know that in .Net programmers should manually run time-consuming task in the background thread. So every time we handle some UI event and we understand that this will take some time we also understand that this will hang UI thread and our application. And then we make all this Background work things and handle callbacks or whatever. So my question is: Is there in some language/platform a mechanism that will automatically run time-consuming tasks in the background and will do all related work itself? So we just write the code for handling specific UI event and this code will be somehow detected as time-consuming and will be executed in background. And if there isn't, then why?
