  • Docker vs ESXi for Startup Projects - Deploying Code for Dev Testing

    - by JasonG
Why hello there little programmer dude! I have a question for you and all of your experience and knowledge. I have an ESXi whitebox that I built which is an 8 dude that sits in the corner. I made a mistake recently and took the key that had ESXi, formatted it and used it for something else. No big deal because the last project I worked on had stalled out. I'm about to pick up another project and now I need to spin up a whole bunch of stuff for CI, qa + db, ticket tracker, wikis etc etc. I've been hearing a lot about Docker recently and as this is just a consumer grade machine, I'm wondering if it may make more sense for me to use Docker on OpenOS and then put everything there - bamboo or hudson, jira, confluence, postgress for the tools to use, then a qa env. I can't really seem to find any documents that directly compare traditional VM infrastructure vs docker solutions and I'm wondering if it is fair to compare. Is there any reason why CoreOS w/ containers would be a strictly worse solution? Or do you have any insight into why I may want to stick with ESXi? I've looked on multiple occasions and can't find a good reason not to. I'm not going to run a production env on the server so I don't need to have HA if updating security or OS for example where esxi would allow me to restart one vm at a time. I can just shut the thing down and bring it back up if I need a reboot no problem. So what's up with this container stuff? Is it a fair replacement for ESXi? I'm guessing the atlassian products would run much better and my ram would go a lot farther using docker. Probably the CPU would run much cooler too and my expensive HDD space would be better utilized.

  • All around design book for a developer (Javascript dev)

    - by Alex Angelini
I have begun doing a lot of javascript development recently, mostly front-end but also using node.js. As I am currently in the transition from large company to startup, they expect me as a front end developer to know how to produce semi decent designs (Which I cannot) I am looking for a book (or set of screencasts) to give me some good well rounded advice on design. I know CSS, but my design are always awful looking, I also know nothing about Photoshop (and am on Linux and have no access to it) What are your picks? I am not looking to be a full time designer I would just like to be able to contribute.

  • How do I set the default size of /dev/shm?

    - by Richard
    I'd like to change the default size of /dev/shm in Lubuntu 11.10 (also known as /run/shm now, I guess). It doesn't seem to appear in my fstab: # / was on /dev/sdb5 during installation UUID=66ac63f0-45fa-4766-9d20-7c56bcd0460d / ext3 noatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1 # /home was on /dev/sdb7 during installation UUID=227f1b29-5d04-4c28-9c9c-ea70b1726434 /home ext3 noatime 0 2 # swap was on /dev/sdb6 during installation #UUID=9e13b7cc-1f75-4b4e-9e79-c0f7368de353 none swap sw 0 0 /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 none swap sw 0 0 tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults,noexec,nosuid 0 0 tmpfs /var/tmp tmpfs defaults,noexec,nosuid 0 0

  • suggestions for lonewolf dev setup

    - by d33j
I'm looking for some suggestions for a better development setup. Background: I'm a crusty old software engineer (mostly java of late) and I have around 50 - 100 incomplete java projects scattered everywhere, usb keys, HDDs, and spanning across 5 or 6 computers etc, which have been put on hold for a few years (ie: family). I have no version control at home. I've been using IntelliJ for around 10 years, so that's the only constant. I'm thinking of nominating one machine as a headless server to put all my projects on, maybe a ubuntu box, that way It won't matter which device I'm on, all my projects can be accessed (and I don't have to waste time actually looking for them). I don't need to access code over the net. These are my own 'happy place' projects so I only work on them when I'm at home, however I can see the benefit of the tasking app being online, that way if I think of something while on public transport lets say, I can add it then & there, but it's not a requirement. I can wait until I get home to create tasks. Summary: So I need some sort of version control so I can rollback mistakes, and some sort of simple tasking software where I can assign tasks for myself later on when I get time. I use Subversion, Sonar, Jira and Crucible at work but I think it's a little bit of an overkill for me though. What do you suggest?

  • Dev Connections Azure Tutorial

I am more than a little tardy with this blog post but the link for the tutorial code can be found here: http://www.dasblonde.net/downloads/windowsazureessentialslaunch042010.zip If you had already downloaded the code from the link specified in my tutorial slides, that link (and this one) are both updated with some new stuff. If you attended my similar tutorial in Norway, there are updates to the scripts here that you might be interested in. I created some PowerShell scripts to delete all Windows Azure...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • git changing head not reflected on co-dev's branch

    - by stevekrzysiak
Basically, we undid history. I know this is bad, and I am already committed to avoiding this at all costs in the future, but what is done is done. Anyway, I issued a git push origin <1_week_old_sha:master to undo some bad commits. I then deleted a buggered branch called release(which had also received some bad commits) from remote and then branched a new release off master. I pushed this to remote. So basically, remote master & release are clones and just how I want them. The issue is if I clone the repo anew(or work in my current repo) everything looks great....but when my co-devs delete their release branch and create a new one based off the new remote release I created, they still see all the old junk I tried to remove. I feel this has to do with some local .git files mistaking the new branch release for the old release. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  • Wordpress Multisite Network installation and dev questions

    - by Daitya
Please go easy on me. I'm a clutzy dinosaur. I currently have a large, unwieldy website hand-coded in html/css with php includes. It currently has a single WP installation in a subdirectory. The plan is to reorganize, and I want to use WP as the CMS and incorporate 3 WP blogs for 3 subdomains. Ideally, would like to create a WP multisite network to allow for further expansion and to save admin trouble. I just want to confirm that if I install WP in the root directory and create 3 blogs (in subdomains), does this mean my website's home page is the mother blog's index.php? Essentially, I will have created 4 blogs - mother at root and 3 children in subdomains? How to set this up on my Mac (OSX 10.5.8) running MAMP for development? And then how to migrate to server without breaking?

  • How do I add content from a view in Drupal with arguments?

    - by pduncan
I have a Drupal view that displays vacation leaves for a particular employee. I want to have a button or link right on this view that says 'Add Vacation Leave'. When this button/link is clicked, I want the create content form for Vacation Leave to be displayed with the employee's name already filled in. When 'Save' is clicked, I would like to go right back to the view, with my new content added. Is all of this possible? Thanks, Paul

    - by Patrick

However when he selects some tags is not possible anymore to unselect all of them. See initial picture: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/72686/Picture%201.png Now all the tags are unselected, but if I select just one of them, then I cannot anymore come back to the initial configuration. (at least one tag remains selected). How can I fix this ? thanks

  • How do I add a custom mod_rewrite rule to a Drupal site on module install?

    - by DKinzer
I have a Drupal-6 module that needs the following mod-rewrite rule added to the .htaccess file of the site's root directory in order to work. RewriteRule ^blog/([0-9]{4}/[0-9]{2}/[0-9]{2}/.*)$ wordpress/$1 How can I add this line pro-grammatically when the module is first installed? Can I use custom_url_rewrite_inbound(&$result, $path, $path_language) to do this? If so, could you please show me an example? Thanks, D
