• Avoid Internet Explorer Warning when embedding Youtube on HTTPS site?

  On a HTTPS site embedding youtube clips works great in all browser, except Internet Explorer where I get this famous little warning message: "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? This page contains content that will not be delivered using a secure HTTPS ... etc" I've tried to solve this in several ways. The most promising one was to use the ProxyPass functionality in Apache to map to YouTube. Like this: ProxyPass: /youtube/ http://www.youtube.com ProxyPassReverse: /youtube/ http://www.youtube.com This gets rid of the annoying warning. However, the youtube SWF fails to start streaming The SWF i manage to load into the browser simply states : "An error occurred, please try again later". Potential solutions are perhaps: Download youtube FLV:s and serve them out of own domain (gah) Use custom FLV-player and stream only FLV:s from youtube over a https proxy?

• What are the real-world benefits of declarative-UI languages such as XAML and QML?

  I'm currently evaluating QtQuick (Qt User Interface Creation Kit) which will be released as part of Qt 4.7. QML is the JavaScript-based declarative language behind QtQuick. It seems to be a very powerful concept, but I'm wondering if anybody that's made extensive use of other, more mature declarative-UI languages like XAML in WPF or Silverlight can give any insight into the real-world benefits that can be gained from this style of programming. Various advantages are often cited: Speed of development Forces separation between presentation and logic Better integration between coders and designers UI changes don't require re-compilation Also, are there any downsides? A few potential areas of concern spring to mind: Execution speed Memory usage Added complexity Are there any other considerations that should be taken into account?

• Determining whether values can potentially match a regular expression, given more input

  I am currently writing an application in JavaScript where I'm matching input to regular expressions, but I also need to find a way how to match strings to parts of the regular expressions. For example: var invalid = "x", potentially = "g", valid = "ggg", gReg = /^ggg$/; gReg.test(invalid); //returns false (correct) gReg.test(valid); //returns true (correct) Now I need to find a way to somehow determine that the value of the potentially variable doesn't exactly match the /^ggg$/ expression, BUT with more input, it potentially can! So for example in this case, the potentially variable is g, but if two more g's are appended to it, it will match the regular expression /^ggg$/ But in the case of invalid, it can never match the /^ggg$/ expression, no matter how many characters you append to it. So how can I determine if a string has or doesn't have potential to match a particular regular expression?

  Hi, I'm going to make my monthly trip to the bookstore soon and I'm kind of interested in learning some user interface and/or design stuff - mostly web related, what are some good books I should look at? One that I've seen come up frequently in the past is Don't Make Me Think, which looks promising. I'm aware of the fact that programmers often don't make great designers, and as such this is more of a potential hobby thing than a move to be a professional designer. I'm also looking for any good web resources on this topic. I subscribed to Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox newsletter, for instance, although it seems to come only once a month or so. Thanks!   Hi, does anyone have any thoughts on what would be considered good technicaly interviews for new php programmers. Im not meaning the little questions that are intended to know language specific intricacies but more on larger interview questions that potential employees may take an hour or 2 to solve in their own time and then come back with. Specifically im looking at PHP and object orientated but are there any ideas on suitable problems that a php programmer should be able to solve within a couple of hours? I am thinking that I want to have demonstrated object orientated techniques and also unit testing capabilities but as for that it can be anything.

  Forgive my ignorance, but do people build websites with Microsoft Dynamics CRM? I have a potential client who says that is the technology they will use for a new web project, for which I would be doing the HTML templating. I want to learn all I can as I am new to this particular system, but I can't seem to find anything related to web building and CRM. Is it more likely the client is developing another piece of technology to work with the CRM that they are neglecting to tell us about? Any experience or insight about this process is greatly appreciated!

• Massive SQL issue shutting down our site.

  Our website has started timing out like crazy today. All of our clients are finding it unusable. The only error we can seem to trace down as a potential problem is this: SQLAllocHandle on SQL_HANDLE_DBC failed Error ASP Description Error Category Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers I have no idea what it means or how to go about fixing it. Anyone ever encountered this error before? Currently, you can log in to our site, but then once you go to do anything else, you find yourself logged out or nothing happens. We have a lot of Ajax going on so the "nothing happens" probably has to do with the Ajax pages not loading properly due to logouts and so nothing displays to the user. Like I said, I'm at a loss. Anyone have any advice on this error?

• Wiki Database, is there one?

  I was searching the net for something like a wiki database, just like wikipedia but instead stores structured content, editable by users. What I was looking for was an online database accessible by everyone where people can design the schema and data with proper versioning of both schema and data. I couldn't find any such site. I am not sure if it is my search skills or if there really is no wiki database as of now. Does anyone out there know anything like this? I think there is a great potential for something like this. A possible example will be a website with a GUI for querying a MySQL DB where any website visitor can create DB objects and populate data.

• ETL mechanisms for MySQL to SQL Server over WAN

  I’m looking for some feedback on mechanisms to batch data from MySQL Community Server 5.1.32 with an external host down to an internal SQL Server 05 Enterprise machine over VPN. The external box accumulates data throughout business hours (about 100Mb per day), which then needs to be transferred internationally across a WAN connection to an internal corporate environment before some BI work is performed. This should just be change-sets making their way down each night. I’m interested in thoughts on the ETL mechanisms people have successfully used in similar scenarios before. SSIS seems like a potential candidate; can anyone comment on the suitability for this scenario? Alternatively, other thoughts on how to do this in a cost-conscious way would be most appreciated. • Master's in Software Engineering vs. Master's in Computer Science: which degree is preferred by empl

  I've been building software professionally for 7 years and am considering a master's degree. I understand the difference between these two degrees as simply: MSCS is the theory while MSE is the practice. I'm equally interested in both and would be happy with either, although I'm curious how these degrees rank in the eyes of a potential employer. I could see two views that a hiring manager could possibly take: a MSCS is loftier and has an implied knowledge of Software Engineering an MSE is more practical and has an implied knowledge of Computer Science In my own experience I've seen both MSCS degree holders than cannot program at all while others are among the best programmers I've met, so of course actual ability will depend on the individual. My question is about the "on paper" value of these two degrees when seeking a job. All things considered, is one degree more hirable, higher-paying than the other?

• Programming tests: are they relevant?

  Do online programming tests have any value (except for providing an evidence to potential employers) in terms of evaluating your knowledge, or a they too broad or too narrow in general? For examples, brainbench.com and similar websites. From my experience I have never found myself scoring particularly high, although I have many years of commercial experience and is doing great at work. These tests mostly refer to things I have never worked with (WebForms or ADO .Net, who works with ADO .Net directly anyway?), yet these tests claim to be C# tests. If you were hiring a programmer, would you consider online tests as an evidence of real skill?

• WPF databinding update comboxbox2 based on selection change in combobox1 with MVVM

  I have a combo box that I have bound to a list that exists in my viewmodel. Now when a users makes a selection in that combo box I want a second combo box to update its content. So, for example, combobox1 is States and combobox2 should contain only the Zipcodes of that state. But in my case I don't have a predefined lists before hand for combobox2, I need to go fetch from a db. Also, if needed, I could get all the potential values for combobox2 (for each combobox1 value) before hand, but I'd like to avoiding that if I can. How do I implement in WPF and using MVVM? I'm fairly new to this whole wpf\databinding\mvvm world.

• Cost effective online consumer surveys / panels?

  I am building a Windows based software targeted at consumers, and while I think it's awesome, I'm not sure if my potential customers will. I would like to do some market research to make sure I'm on the right track with the feature set. Unfortunately, I don't have the budget for a large sample size. I understand that I won't be able to get anything near statistical significance on the cheap, but some feedback is better than no feedback I figure. • ACT Professional for Windows-Memory leak?

  I have an ACT! professional for Windows V11.1, with the latest SQL service pack (SP3) and have an apparent memory leak on the server. After a restart the ACT! SQL instance (SQLSERVR) consumes almost all the available memory on the server, we have added more memory to the server (it is running under Hyper-V) but it continues to consume it all. I have not been able to connect to the SQL server instance using management studio in order to limit the amount of RAM it is allocated. Are there any potential solutions for this? or should I continue to restart the services?

• Java Google App Engine inconsistent data lose after restarting dev server

  Hello everyone, I am using Java GAE. So far, i'm just scafolding my data objects and i'm seeing an interesting issue. The records that i am playing around with are getting updated properly as long as my dev server is running up. The second that the my dev server gets restarted, i lose all of my changes. That would be not alarming if i lost all of my records, but, there was a point of time where my data persisted through the server restart. I'm worried that i would lose production data if i launched without fixing this potential bugs? ANy idea on wher ei should look?

  I am developing a web service and depend on 3rd party developers to write client applications for it. I need to set a developer portal, a web site where existing and potential developers would find documentation html pages doc files for download libraries downloads wiki forums support ticketing system. There should be a public part and a part protected by login. I want only logged in users to submit tickets, for example. I don't want to host it. I would prefer a generic design based on a sensible template, where I can add minimal customization, such as logo. I don't want to add code to get any of the above functionality. I will do all that if necessary, but I'd hope there would be an online service to do thing like that. What services would you guys recommend?

• Deploy custom web service to sharepoint server(2007/2010)?

  According to MSDN, for deploying custom web service, we need to create *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files, and put them with .asmx together under _vti_bin folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\isapi). And put the dll under bin folder of the root of sharepoint virtual directory. It works correctly for me. However, i also found that if i put .asmx file under the root virtual directory without creating those *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files. It can work as well and much easier than the above way. So i'm wondering what's the potential issues in this way?

• JQuery Autocomplete only suggesting first row

  I'm doing research using JQuery's Autocomplete plugin and Google Maps' API. What I have so far is located here. I'm using Asp.net MVC to generate the list of potential address matches (limited to US addresses only) and presenting them as a pipe-delimeted list to Autocomplete, which is supposed to be .spliting them up and suggesting them to the user. The problem I'm having (besides a stubborn IE-only javascript error, which I'll break into another question), is that only the first result is suggested. This page clearly shows two results, yet typing "3118" into the textbox produces only the Galax Dr result. How can I get Automplete to produce both results?

• Can I distribute my MATLAB program as open source?

  I know, the general answer will be yes, but here is my situation. I got a plotting function from one MATLAB's toolbox and modified its m-file to draw what I need. Eventually this function became a part of program I would like to distribute as an open source (or under other license). Can I do this? Well, may be it was not wise to create a function in such a way, but I didn't think about distribution at that time. The function still depends on other functions in this toolbox, so a potential user supposed to have a license for it. Any thoughts, recommendations? Have you ever modified MATLAB's m-files directly?

  I'd like to pose a few abstract questions about computer vision research. I haven't quite been able to answer these questions by searching the web and reading papers. How does someone know whether a computer vision algorithm is correct? How do we define "correct" in the context of computer vision? Do formal proofs play a role in understanding the correctness of computer vision algorithms? A bit of background: I'm about to start my PhD in Computer Science. I enjoy designing fast parallel algorithms and proving the correctness of these algorithms. I've also used OpenCV from some class projects, though I don't have much formal training in computer vision. I've been approached by a potential thesis advisor who works on designing faster and more scalable algorithms for computer vision (e.g. fast image segmentation). I'm trying to understand the common practices in solving computer vision problems.

• use jquery autocomplete with carousel for preview and selection

  Hi, I've successfully used jquery autocomplete to display a list of matching images based on user input. The user experience isn't great though due to the number of potential matches - even with fairly prescriptive input. I've found this example at nokia http://www.nokia.co.uk/support/download-software/device-software-update (I know it's written in flash) which would provide the ideal interface for what I'm trying to achieve. Does anyone have any pointers for doing this using jquery autocomplete as a starting point? Or better still know of an existing javascript library that provides this functionality?   Hi all, I want to be able to access properties from a json string within my java action method. The string is available by simply saying myJsonString = object.getJson(); Below is an example of what the string can look like: {'title': 'Computing and Information systems','id':1,'children': 'true','groups': [{'title': 'Level one CIS','id':2,'children': 'true','groups':[{'title': 'Intro To Computing and Internet','id':3,'children': 'false','groups':[]}]}]} In this string every json object contains an array of other json objects. The intention is to extract a list of id's where any given object possessing a group property that contains other json objects. I looked at google's Gson as a potential json plugin. Can anyone offer some form of guidance as to how I can generate java from this json string? Thank you, Kind regards.
