• Terrible noises from subwoofer of ACER Aspire 6930 with Realtek sound chip

  After approximately 5-15 min of listening to music my subwoofer begins to make terrible noises. He's just "coughing". That began after 6 months I had this computer. Now I found out, that I can temporarily fix this problem by "restarting" the audio stream of the application that plays music. For example reloading last.fm page (reloads the flash file). Another way to reset the audio playback is switching the speaker configuration shown below in the screenshot. According to many posts on the internet like http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/52918-20-acer-aspire-6935g-speaker-problem ACER support isn't any help Exchanging hardware doesn't fix the problem Even the later models have this problem Turning off the volume of the subwoofer is not an option to me. I still have warranty (I bought an extension of one year). I already tried about 15 versions of the Realtek driver with no success. I am not sure but MAYBE the problem did not occur on the original windows vista that was shipped with this computer. However, I removed the original windows for good reasons (english). What do you suggest me? Did anyone fix this problem? Maybe by writing a script which resets the audio streams every 5 minutes? Shall I take the effort to deal with the acer support until they give me another model? (I won't have a computer than for a longer time, will spend money on telephone hotlines (1,30 EUR / min)......) • Anyone else experiencing high rates of linux server crashes today?

  Just today, Sat June 30th - starting soon after the start of the day GMT. We've had a handful of blades in different datacentres as managed by different teams all go dark - not responding to pings, screen blank. They're all running Debian Squeeze - with everything from stock kernel to custom 3.2.21 builds. Most are Dell M610 blades, but I've also just lost a Dell R510 and other departments have lost machines from other vendors too. There was also an older IBM x3550 which crashed and which I thought might be unrelated, but now I'm wondering. The one crash which I did get a screen dump from said: [3161000.864001] BUG: spinlock lockup on CPU#1, ntpd/3358 [3161000.864001] lock: ffff88083fc0d740, .magic: dead4ead, .owner: imapd/24737, .owner_cpu: 0 Unfortunately the blades all supposedly had kdump configured, but they died so hard that kdump didn't trigger - and they had console blanking turned on. I've disabled console blanking now, so fingers crossed I'll have more information after the next crash. Just want to know if it's a common thread or "just us". It's really odd that they're different units in different datacentres bought at different times and run by different admins (I run the FastMail.FM ones)... and now even different vendor hardware. Most of the machines which crashed had been up for weeks/months and were running 3.1 or 3.2 series kernels. The most recent crash was a machine which had only been up about 6 hours running 3.2.21.

• Read-only lock on a SharePoint site collection, or Why can't I edit anymore?

  Monday morning, the calls started.  For some reason, long-time users were unable to edit list items.  I figured we had a permissions issue, so I popped in to look at the Site Settings -- and found that I couldn't.  A quick trip to Central Administration showed that I was still listed as a Site Collection Administrator, but I had no power at all on the site collection in question.A quick glance at the logs told me that the server had recently shut down unexpectedly (this is a Hyper-V virtual machine).  Apparently, in the confusion, somehow SharePoint decided to lock the site collection as Read Only.  This can be remedied in one of two ways:1)  In Central Administration, go to Application Management->SharePoint Site Management->Site collection quotas and locks.  Once you have arrived, select the correct application and site collection, and you will have the opportunity to view and set the lock status of the collection (it most likely will be set to "Read-only", and you'll want to move that radio button to "Not locked").2)  Fire up stsadm and issue the following command:stsadm -o setsitelock -url http://myportalsitecollection -lock none

• My card reader doesn't show up at all, but previously did in 10.10

  I bought a pin-based-USB powered internal media card reader and it worked perfectly when I first installed Ubuntu 10.10 a month ago. I used it a few times since and today I booted up the computer and it's not working. Here's how it used to work: In nautilus->computer, 5 "drives" would display even when no card was inserted. One for each slot (SD, XD, CF/MS, etc). Opening one w/o a card would initiate a "Please insert card." dialog. Inserting a card would automatically open nautilus. • Best way to let users choose country/language when submiting an URL to a directory

  I want to offer the user the possibility to add the country/language for websites they would submit to a fairly simple website directory. I have a folder with flags from http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/flags/ . The flag images are named according to the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes, meaning that I could make a PHP script that would be able to retrieve images and the name of the country retrieved from the image name (not the full name, but it wouldn't be necessary). Just to make things clearer, I couldn't find a proper combo-box jQuery plugin for my needs (that would act exactly like the native but with an icon before the text) and don't really have the time to develop one on my own. Considering the number of images, I also wouldn't just display them all with a radio box near them. Also, having a classic drop-down list would be a nightmare for me as I would have to assign the short country name manually to each entry, or do it once for every country. Offering the user a dropdown list with the short country names but no flag near them would also be unfriendly and confusing. The idea is that every website featured in the directory would have the country flag icon near it. I have the images named properly but I don't know how to let the user choose the right image for their website. Any idees? Thank you all in advance!   As I already blogged a while back, native code has been on the lips of many since TechEd 2011. Microsoft seems very committed to actually putting the language to use again after all these years of radio silence. Regarding this I urge you all guys to watch this video interview of Mohsen Agsen about C++ Today and Tomorrow http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Going+Deep/Mohsen-Agsen-C-Today-and-Tomorrow on Channel 9. What I find very inspiring about this interview is that Microsoft has a number of internal projects where they are using C++ and they really understand the value of C++ as a highly performant programming language. He also talks about combining managed code, scripted code and native code to get the most out of each of them. This is something that we are doing a lot in the game industry, since we recognize the need for performant platform code with an easy to write scripting layer on top of that. This is something I intend to blog about in the near future, so stay tuned! Another great thing that I bumped into recently is C++ AMP that was announced at this year’s AMD Fusion Developer Summit. I would recommend watching Herb Sutter’s keynote on the subject at http://channel9.msdn.com/posts/AFDS-Keynote-Herb-Sutter-Heterogeneous-Computing-and-C-AMP.

• Get external metadata with streamripper using python script

  Hi I like using streamripper to rip music from the web. I have a favorite radio station that doesn't have the metadata for the songs, so I have to screen scrape it from its website manually. I created this neat python script in the format that the docs suggest, and linked the address in the GUI for streamriper. But it still doesn't work, any one know how to make it work..? I know it used to work. • My Windows Phone 7 experience: 45 days in

  November 13th, 2010 was the day I got my Windows Phone 7.  It was an exciting day, a lot of anxiety too.  Over a phone? Sadly, yes! Being a Zune Pass subscriber, it was something worth looking forward too, being a consultant that relies and works with Microsoft technologies and having the option of OneNote (without converters and such) on my phone was a great thing too. Has that changed over 45 days?  No, not really.  But I find myself at the very same place I was with my iPhone, I don’t really use the music player as I spend enough time in front of a computer where I have Pandora and the Zune Desktop.  Or in a car with Satellite Radio.  As for OneNote, that keeps me hooked and with access to my notes no matter where I take them. The Device: Samsung Focus Likes: OneNote integration, Zune capabilities (just note my comment above), fast and smooth interface, calendar, tiles, the device itself. Dislikes: Heavy glitches in SharePoint interaction. And a very weird one I have experienced is, any pictures I get sent from an iPhone via email will register as an attachment but the pictures are not listed as the attachment once I open the message … weird!!  Then, of course, some apps have not made it to the platform (not sure they ever will … Pandora??!!??  Chase??!!??).  But those apps missing is not the phone, or Microsoft’s fault (IMO).  In summary, I am happy with it, and some of the missing apps have made me shift the way I work with the products or features affected … meaning I rely on my desktop stuff for that.

• How to connect to my own WiFi using Broadcom STA drivers?

  I'm trying hard to switch to Linux from Windows because of my engineering project. Unfortunately, everything is against that change! Before I have installed Broadcom STA proprietary drivers, I was seeing on NetworkManager and nm-applet only local radio-internet-access networks. After I installed Broadcom STA, I see my neighbor's wireless network (channel 11, WEP) Neither before nor after the installation is own wireless network available. Computer: Asus Lamborghini VX6 Ubuntu: 12.04 LTS 64-bit Router: ASUS N55U (A1) with newest AsusWRT firmware Network: Channel 5 (tried also 10 and 11, both on 20 and 40MHz bands), WPA2 Personal, 2,4 + 5 GHz (what is not very important, 'cause the wlan card in VX6 is only 2,4GHz). Network works fine on Windows, also through D-Link repeater on the other floor. Unfortunately, same network is invisible to Ubuntu on same machine. I have tried some combinations with other GUIs but it did not work. Are there any better drivers for Ubuntu? I need that network badly, but I'm an Ubuntu newbie, so I don't know how to solve that problem. Please help.

• Identifying elements from data feeds generated by affiliate sites

  I am working with data feeds from affiliate sites. The basic idea is to provide an interface where the user can paste a link to an XML datafeed (these are huge btw, around 60 mb) that would then be streamed, parsed into small chunks, and mined for the required data which would then be stored in the database. The problem is that different affiliate sites have different Schemas for their XML's. It is a little hard mapping the elements in an XML to your database attributes when you don't actually know which element contains what. My Solution: Use XPath to traverse through the first set of parent and it's descendent's, fetch the elements as well as the data and and ask the user to map this data to the attributes in the database by selecting from a set of radio buttons that represent the attributes from the database. This will be done just once for each new Feed, once the system know's what's what it will automatically upload the data from the XML to the database. Does this sound viable? Is there a better solution? I realize this leaves an uncomfortable opening for human error.. Thanks.

• Apache /server-status/ gives a 404 not found

  I am trying to solve a problem where Apache stats aren't displaying correctly in Munin. I've ran through quite a bit of checks and tests regarding Munin setup, but I think my issue is related to Apache, but my skill set there is lacking. first, system info: monitored server CentOS 5.3 kernel 2.6.18-128.1.1.el5 Apache/2.2.3 "server-status" directive in httpd.conf (i've cross-compared this with another system that i did a successful parallel install of Munin on, correctly showing Apache stats, and the directive below is the same for both) ExtendedStatus On <Location /server-status> SetHandler server-status Order deny,allow Deny from all Allow from 127.0.0.1 </Location> ran lynx http://localhost/server-status got HTTP/1.1 404 taking a look at Apache access_log: 127.0.0.1 - - [13/Oct/2010:07:00:47 -0700] "GET /server-status HTTP/1.0" 404 11237 "-" "Lynx/2.8.5rel.1 libwww-FM/2.14 SSL-MM/1.4.1 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5" mod_status is also loaded: % grep "mod_status" /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf LoadModule status_module modules/mod_status.so iptables is turned off also i did notice that the ownership status on httpd.conf on this system is root.root.. whereas the system that is displaying correctly is apache.www -- not certain that this matters?? its got to be permission issue, but i'm not certain where the permissions are messed up. any thoughts on why the test of server-status is giving me a 404?

Note that $("input).attr("checked") returns true prior to jQuery 1.6. So I have ListActivity class which is FragmentActivity and ListFragment class which is Fragment It all works perfect, but when I change screen orientation it calls again AsyncTask and reload all data.   I have a form. I have made it so that if your name is not put in, a red border is put on the name field. That works, BUT...it's for a split second, and then the page reloads. I want the red border to appear, and then stay there. For some reason it's for a split second. Can someone help me make it so the page doesn't reload after displaying the red border?   I am using MVVM architecture. I have a usercontrol UC as a View Model is a ModelData class ViewModel (UCViewModel) is binded to a usercontrol. I have three more usercontrols that is inside the usercontrol UC ( discussed above). Let's say uc1, uc2 and uc3. and the visibility of uc1 , uc2 and uc3 inside UC depends on the type selected ( which ever radio button is selected ). Since UC is binded to UCViewModel and I have to do all the stuff related to uc1 , uc2 and uc3 inside UCViewModel. Can I have seperate VM to uc1 , uc2 and uc3.. if Yes how can i do that ? Please Help!!

• jQuery autocomplete disabled makes autocomplete partially transparent, not disabled

  I'm using the jQuery UI's "autocomplete" function on a search on my site. When you change a radio button from 'area search" to "name search" I want it to disable the autocomplete, and re-enable it when you switch back. However, when you disable the autocomplete it doesn't hide the dropdown, it just dims it to 20% opacity or so. • ASP.NET radiobuttonlist onclientclick

  I've noticed there is no OnClientClick() property for the radiobuttonlist in the ASP.NET control set. Is this a purposeful omissiong on Microsoft's part? Anyway, I've tried to add OnClick to the radio button list like so: For Each li As ListItem In rblSearch.Items li.Attributes.Add("OnClick", "javascript:alert('jon');") Next But alas, it doesn't work. I've even checked the source in firebug, and there is no javascript shown in the radiobuttonlist. Does anyone know how to get this very simple thing working? I'm using ASP.NET control adpaters so don't know if that has anything to do with it. (I wish asp.net/javascript would just work out the box!!!)

• Accessing original WordPress blog's DB from sub-blogs in network mode

  I'm helping with a university radio station website that runs WordPress and was recently switched over to Network (Multi-site/multi-user) mode by myself. The setup is as such: The parent site (www.stationID.com) runs a bunch of custom-built plugins to construct things like the show schedule calendar, the "Now Playing" widget, podcast list, et cetera. The new network websites ("wiki.stationID.com", "buddypress.stationID.com" for instance) run the same template as the parent site, but it stops after rendering the first section because the widgets from point 1 grab data from the main site's database that is not available to sub-blogs. My question is: how do I get data from the main site's tables on the sub-domain sub-blogs? A related question is: how do I set the $wpdb->prefix to be the same as the parent site on the child websites without it negatively effecting how the child website pulls data from its own database? Any help would be awesome, thanks!
