  Hi, I have a domain object Thing which can contain several Categories. So I have implemented my HTML helper to create a checkbox group of all possible Categories. I have no problem receiving: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create(Thing Thing, List<string> Categories) However I am wondering whether I could use a custom Model binder to use just this: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Create(Thing Thing) So basically I am looking for a way to use the model binder to bootstrap the object tree/graph. • Issue with child of custom Decorator class in WPF

  I need a custom border that renders a little differently than a normal border. If I inherit from Border everything works fine, what am I missing?

• Constructing an object and calling a method without assignment in VB.Net

  I'm not entirely sure what to call what C# does, so I haven't had any luck searching for the VB.Net equivalent syntax (if it exists, which I suspect it probably doesn't). In c#, you can do this: public void DoSomething() { new MyHelper().DoIt(); // works just fine } But as far as I can tell, in VB.Net, you must assign the helper object to a local variable or you just get a syntax error: Public Sub DoSomething() New MyHelper().DoIt() ' won't compile End Sub Just one of those curiosity things I run into from day to day working on mixed language projects - often there is a VB.Net equivalent which uses less than obvious syntax. Anyone?

• Zend Framework: Flash Messenger, add a message from the model

  Any idea on how best to add a message to flash messenger from the model? As FlashMessenger is an action helper, this seems not to be possible, so the obvious solution is to create an internal message object in the model, and return that to the controller from where you can use addMessage(). But if you want to return something else as well, this falls down. Another idea is an additional session namespace for these internal messages, which is then merged in with the Flash Messenger namespace messages at output time? Anyone have any thoughts or experience on this? Cheers.

  Hello, I am currently writing a framework dll which has an AssemblyHelper. This helper stores Runtime and UserAdded assemblies to easily instantiate new objects. The .NET part of the framework uses: AppDomain MyDomain = AppDomain.CurrentDomain; Assembly[] AssembliesLoaded = MyDomain.GetAssemblies(); _runtimeAssemblies = AssembliesLoaded; This gets me all the assemblies I need. But the problem is I can't use this with Silverlight and I have no idea what to use now. Currently I am using: Assembly[] AssembliesLoaded = {Assembly.GetCallingAssembly()}; But this only adds the Assembly of my framework and not the one of the application or any other runtime assembly. To assist, I have created a couple of helper classes (some code for not-implemented members of the interfaces has been omitted for brevity): public class IPrincipalStub : IPrincipal { private IIdentity identityStub = new IIdentityStub(); public IIdentity Identity { get { return identityStub } set { identityStub = value } } } public class IIdentityStub : IIdentity { public string Name { get; set; } } However, the Name property in the IIdentity interface is read-only (the IIDentity interface specifies a getter but not a setter for the Name property). How can I set the Name property in my stub object for testing purposes if the interface has defined it as a read-only property?

• jQuery UI Draggable-Droppable overflow:visible

  Sadly, I am unable to provide any JSFiddle for this issue, as I cant seem to reproduce it outside my project. I have a container where there are some boxes, that can be arranged using drag and drop, by utilizing jQuery UI. The problem is, that the container is overflow:auto; but it needs to be overflow:visible;, but if I do that, jQuery UI malfunctions. When a box drag is initiated, it will immediatly jump up aproximately 400-500px. This is how the draggable is created: $(".draggable").draggable({ revert: 'invalid', // when not dropped, the item will revert back to its initial position containment: '#editContainer', // stick to demo-frame if present helper: 'original', cursor: 'move' }); Is this a bug with jQuery UI, or can this be fixed on my end?   I've been digging around the NHibernate sources a little, trying to understand how NHibernate implements removing child elements from a collection. I think I've already found the answer, but I'd ideally like this to be confirmed by someone familiar with the matter. So far I've found AbstractPersistentCollection (base class for all collection proxies) has a static helper method called GetOrphans to find orphans by comparing the current collection with a snapshot. The existence of this method suggests NHibernate tries to find all oprhaned elements and then deletes them by key. Is this correct, in terms of the generated SQL?

• [Rails] Calling a method from a view using link_to_function

  Hello! I'm trying to have an image that when clicked associates the selected guideline to a project. I'm using link_to_function which somewhat behaves but I can not get the method I am calling in the link_to_function to redirect to another page. Is there a better way to do this? Below is a bit of my code.   Songs on Rap Genius have paths like /lyrics/The-notorious-b-i-g-ft-mase-and-puff-daddy/Mo-money-mo-problems which are defined in routes.rb as: map.song '/lyrics/:artist_slug/:title_slug', :controller => 'songs', :action => 'show' When I want to generate such a path, I use song_url(:title_slug => song.title_slug, :artist_slug => song.artist_slug). However, I'd much prefer to be able to type song_url(some_song). Is there a way I can make this happen besides defining a helper like: def x_song_path(song) song_path(:title_slug => song.title_slug, :artist_slug => song.artist_slug) end

• WCF Web Service chnage wsdl name and targetNamespace

  All, I'm a little new to WCF over IIS but have done some ASMX web services before. My WCF service is up and running but the helper page generated by the web service for me has the default names, i.e. the page that says: You have created a service. To test this service, you will need to create a client and use it to call the service. You can do this using the svcutil.exe tool from the command line with the following syntax: svcutil.exe http://localhost:53456/ServicesHost.svc?wsdl In a standard ASMX site I would use method/class attributes to give the web service a name and a namespace. When I click on the link the WSDL has: <wsdl:definitions name="SearchServices" targetNamespace="http://tempuri.org/" i.e. not the WCF Service Contract Name and Namespace from my Interface. I assume the MEX is using some kind of default settings but I'd like to change them to be the correct names. How can I do this?

What's the best / your favorite way to paginate a dataset with an application built upon Zend_Framework and Doctrine as your ORM? I'm new to Doctrine. I'm calling the model directly from a View Helper, bypassing the Controller, although I'm still interested if your solution uses controllers. I did see one article on this topic: http://ciaranmcnulty.com/blog/2009/06/Simplify-pagination-logic-using-a-custom-zend-paginator-adapter Devzone has an article using Doctrine, Zend Framework OR Pear, but none of those options mention a #ZF app that uses Doctrine.

• How can I set MAXLENGTH on input fields automatically?

  I'm using ASP.NET MVC RC2. I have a set of classes that were auto-generated "Linq-to-SQL Classes", where each class models a table in my database. I have some default "edit" views that use the neat-o Html.TextBoxFor helper extension to render HTML input fields for the columns in a table. However, I notice that there is no MAXLENGTH attribute specified in the generated HTML. A quick google shows that you can add explicit attributes using TextBoxFor etc. but that would mean that I need to hard-code the values (and I need to remember to do it for every input). This seems pretty poor, considering that everything was automatically generated directly from the DB, so the size of the columns is known. (Although, to be fair, the web-side stuff has to work with any model objects, not just with Linq-to-SQL objects). Is there any nice way of getting this to do the right thing?

For this purposes I'm going to use struts2's bean declaration: <bean name="myfactory" class="my.model.JPAResourceBean" scope="session" optional="false"/> Why bean is not instantiated neither in session? (I'm using s:property just for debug) ... <s:property value="#session.myfactory" default="buka.1"/> ... nor in plain bean list: ... <s:property value="#myfactory" default="buka.2"/> ... May be the second part of question is - how to resolve this bean from java code?

• What are the pro and cons of statically linking a library?

  Hi, I want to release an application I developed as a hobby both for Linux and Windows. This application depends on boost (and possibly other libraries). The norm for this kind of application (a chess engine) is to provide only an executable file and possibly some helper files. I tough it would be a good idea to statically link the libraries so the executable would not have any dependencies. So the end user can just put the executable in a directory and start using it. However, while doing some research online I found some negative comments about statically linking libraries, some even arguing that an application with statically linked libraries would be hardly portable, meaning that it would only run on my system of highly similar systems. So what are the pros and cons of statically linking library? I already know that the executable will be bigger. But I can't see why it would make my application less portable.

• How do I get developers to treat test code as "real" code?

  In the last two companies I've been at, there is an overriding mentality among developers that it's okay to write unit tests in a throw-away style. Code that they would never write in the actual product suddenly becomes OK in the unit tests. I'm talking Rampant copying and pasting between tests Code styling rules not followed Hard-coded magic strings across tests No object-oriented thought or design for integration tests, mocks or helper objects (250 line single-function tests!) .. and so on. I'm highly dissatisfied with the quality of the test code. Generally we do not do code reviews on our test assemblies, and we also do not enforce style or code analysis of them on our build server. Is that the only way to overcome this inertia about test quality? I'm looking for ideas to take to our developers, without having to go to higher management saying that we need to use resources for enforcement of test quality (although I will if I have to). Any thoughts or similar experiences?

  Hi guys! I'm trying to create permalink like behavior for some article titles and i don't want to add a new db field for permalink. So i decided to write a helper that will convert my article title from: "O "focoasa" a pornit cruciada, împotriva barbatilor zgârciti" to "o-focoasa-a-pornit-cruciada-impotriva-barbatilor-zgarciti". While i figured out how to replace spaces with hyphens and remove other special characters (other than -) using: title.gsub(/\s/, "-").gsub(/[^\w-]/, '').downcase I am wondering if there is any other way to replace a character with a specific other character from only one .gsub method call, so I won't have to chain title.gsub("a", "a") methods for all the UTF-8 special characters of my localization. I was thinking of building a hash with all the special characters and their counterparts but I haven't figured out yet how to use variables with regexps. What I was looking for is something like: title.gsub(/\s/, "-").gsub(*replace character goes here*).gsub(/[^\w-]/, '').downcase Thanks!

• Render a partial from a task in Symfony 1.4

  I'm trying to render a partial in a Symfony task and having no luck. I found docs in 1.1 that say to just call get_partial() but apparently that's no longer readily available in 1.4. I tried loading the helper manually with sfLoader::getHelpers('Partial'); but I get "Class sfLoader not found". Any help would be greatly appreciated. For reference what I'm trying to do is generate an HTML file called 'header.html' from my global header partial used in all of my layouts for inclusion in a third-party forum I'm integrating (Simple Machines/SMF).

• Algorithm: efficient way to remove duplicate integers from an array

  I got this problem from an interview with Microsoft. Given an array of random integers, write an algorithm in C that removes duplicated numbers and return the unique numbers in the original array. E.g Input: {4, 8, 4, 1, 1, 2, 9} Output: {4, 8, 1, 2, 9, ?, ?} One caveat is that the expected algorithm should not required the array to be sorted first. And when an element has been removed, the following elements must be shifted forward as well. Anyway, value of elements at the tail of the array where elements were shifted forward are negligible. Update: The result must be returned in the original array and helper data structure (e.g. hashtable) should not be used. However, I guess order preservation is not necessary. Update2: For those who wonder why these impractical constraints, this was an interview question and all these constraints are discussed during the thinking process to see how I can come up with different ideas.

• CSS3PIE: Internet Explorer 6 doesn't download PIE.htc

  I'm using the very impressive CSS3PIE (http://css3pie.com) library to add support for CSS3 styles in IE6-8. It works fine in versions 7 and 8 and took a lot of pain out of the process. However, in IE6 no CSS3 styles are shown at all. In fact, looking at the server logs, I can see that IE6 doesn't even download the PIE.htc file, which is necessary for the magic to work. The content type for the file is set correctly as text/x-component, it's referenced by absolute URL, and works fine in IE7 and 8. I'm using Compass (www.compass-style.org) and the PIE helper which makes the CSS look like this: #shopping_cart { behavior: url("/media/static/css/PIE.htc"); position: relative; border-radius: 10px; } I can't figure out what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas what might cause IE6 to skip the behavior definition altogether? Cheers, Jonas

  I'm starting to use the MVVMLight framework and have a question about binding to properties in the ViewModel. I found that I have to call the RaisePropertyChanged method in the setter for the property in order for the View to be updated. And I have to call RaisePropertyChanged from through the dispatcher otherwise I get a thread access error. public string Lat { get { return _lat; } set { _lat = value; Deployment.Current.Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() => RaisePropertyChanged("Lat")); } } This works but its a lot of code to get auto binding properties. Is there a helper to handle this more cleanly?
