  • Typing with a right-to-left language on Windows Vista Home Premium (English)

    A friend's laptop came with "Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1)" installed in English. But she's from a country with a right-to-left language, and she wants to be able to type in her own language from right-to-left. Going to the control panel and adding a keyboard on her language did half of the trick. She can type in her language but on a left-to-right way. Is it possible to enable the cursor to go on the other direction?

    I recently re-installed non-English Windows XP Home SP2 to two computers. Why the computers don't start downloading software updates ? I have valid licenses and the copies have been activated successfully. Over the years I have made several XP installations from the same media and there has been no issues earlier (i.e. the software updates have started a quite soon). I do have the automatic software updates turned on (as I have always).

    When an LDAP user logs into the system they have incorrect permissions to their home directory. LDAP and NFS services exist on the same server.     I just installed SSRS 2008 on a development server and when I connect to it with SQL Management Studio I do not have all of the items in Object Explorer that I had with our SSRS 2005 installation. For example, we are missing the "Home" folder which lists all the reports. When we browse to our /ReportServer URL we can view and run our reports, so I know they are on the server. Does anyone know if this is a permissions issue or something else?

    I would like to setup Windows Server 2008 R2 using RemoteFX at home, for a couple of users to all use the server (instead of buying each user a seperate computer). I have been trying to find what processors (Intel based) that support the SLAT that is apparently needed to run RemoteFX. I currently have a computer that has an i3 processor, but after testing it shows that it will not support it. Does anyone know which processors from Intel do support this?

  • Naming PCs on a mixed hosts home network.

    I have a home network comprising an Apple iMacs and a Windows 7 PCs - using the internet connection sharing feature on the Windows 7 PC to share the internet connection with the iMac. I have configured the hostnames on each pc so, running hostname on the Windows 7 box says "windows7" and on the iMac says "apple", but, if I try and "ping apple" from Windows 7 or "ping Windows7" from the iMac they can't resolve. what do I need to do to get this 'simple' level on connectivity working?

  • Master/Slave DNS setup vs. rsync'ed DNS servers

    We currently have primary and secondary DNS servers on our corporate network. They are setup in a master/slave type setup, where the slave gets its DNS information from the master. I'm trying to figure out what the real advantage is for the master/slave setup instead of just setting up an automated rsync between the two to keep the DNS settings matched. Can anyone shed some light on this? Or is it just a preferential thing? If that is the case, it seems like the rsync setup would be much easier to setup, maintain and understand.

    I'm trying to setup vpnc on Ubuntu. When I run vpnc, my resolv.conf file does not get changed. It still only contains my ISP's name servers: #@VPNC_GENERATED@ -- this file is generated by vpnc # and will be overwritten by vpnc # as long as the above mark is intact nameserver 65.32.5.111 nameserver 65.32.5.112 Here is my /etc/network/interfaces: auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 dns-nameservers 65.32.5.111 65.32.5.112 Any tips on how to troubleshoot/resolve this?     I am looking for a solution to forward one public IP address and one specific port to different machines based on hostname (as of now, I need it only for HTTP). The current setup is NAT on a commodity router (it only provide simple public port to private IP address / port forwarding). I can add a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine before the router if required, but prefer not to do so. So ideally, I would like to have the current setup and the forwarding is done on one of the Windows Servers. Is it possible to do this?

    I'm taking a look at buying some new servers (small infrastructure, 2 racks, etc), and although I like a lot of the features in blades, I'm looking at the price point for Silicon Mechanics' 4-node machines. http://www.siliconmechanics.com/i27091/xeon-2U-4-Node.php It's a bit like a mini-blade enclosure, but has no shared resources, except for the redundant power supplies. A single point of management would be great, but for the low price point here, I'm possibly willing to give that up, if the server quality is adequate. Basically, have you used these machines? Any problems? Anything you like?

    We have IIS servers running in 2 machines hosting few webservices which provided some integration services to an old document Mgmt system, word/excel related service, etc.... We need to cluster/load balance these 2 IIS in order to achieve a fail-over. i.e If one of the IIS server is down, the other on should be able to handle the request. The reverse proxy used in the DMZ is also IIS 7.5 Our overall business application is in fact a J2EE one and we have successfully deployed on a weblogic cluster installed on the same two machines and load balance from the same above mentioned IIS reverse proxy at DMZ. But we do not know how to achieve this in case of IIS.
