• How to keep programs from source up to date?

  I'm designing a new server setup for hosting multiple websites. (Shared hosting for my clients over at SliceHost.) I've recently moved away from the traditional LAMP setup and chosen Ubuntu, Nginx, php-fpm and mysql. I like it a lot better then my old Apache, suphp, mysql setup. It works great, provided encapsulation between sites and uses substantiallly less memory. However I have one major maintenance problem. In order to have a recent version of Nginx and in order to use php-fpm I've had to compile these programs from source. The reason I see this as a problem is that keeping track of updates, and build configurations will end up being a lot of work. For two programs (and a patch) I can handle it, but it seems like this setup would not scale with many packages and servers. Are there good ways to manage this situation? I'm sure people do this all the time.

  I am looking for others' list of program that absolutely must be installed to a fresh install of Windows before going any further. I hope to compile a list here to use as reference for all new Windows installs/restores. Automating this list of programs installation is the next step. Some great lists so far! I will continue to monitor this and then make a list of everything I use. Another thought, has anyone come up with a way to automate this? Possibly going to each programs download page, downloading the most recent version, and installing? I may way on this as well, any ideas would be appreciated! As far as the type of machine, most of mine are hybrids i.e- server, workstation, development machine. So all of the above!

• Detecting if SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 SP2 x64 is installed?

  I am building an installer and I want to bootstrap SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 SP2. The problem is that I am looking for the registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\ENU\DesktopRuntimeVersion. The reason that is a problem is that for 64-bit machines SQL CE requires that both the 32-bit and 64-bit installers are run. You can't install the 64-bit version until the 32-bit version is installed. As soon as the 32-bit version is installed the registry key is populated and my bootstrapper, dotNetInstaller detects that the registry key is there and the x64 version is never installed. Any ideas on how to tell if the x64 version is installed even if the x32 is installed?

  We use employees' desktops for CPU-intensive simulation during the night. Desktops run Windows - usually Windows XP. Employees don't log off, they just lock the desktops, switch off their monitors and go. Every employee has a configuration file which he can edit to specify when he is most likely out of office. When that time comes a background program grabs data for simulation from the server, spawns worker processes, watches them, gets results and sends them to the server. When the time specified by the employee elapses simulation stops so that normal desktop usage is not interfered. The problem is that simuation consumes a lot of memory, so when the worker processes run they force other programs into the swap file. So when the employee comes all the programs he left are luggish and slow until he opens them one by one so that they are unswapped. Is there a way the program can force other programs out of swap file when it stops simulation so that they again run smoothly?

• How to protect against GHC7 compiled programs taking all memory?

  When playing with various algorithms in Haskell it often happens to me that I create a program with a memory leak, as it often happens with lazy evaluation. The program taking all the memory isn't really fun, I often have difficulty killing it if I realize it too late. When using GHC6 I simply had export GHCRTS='-M384m' in my .bashrc. But in GHC7 they added a security measure that unless a program is compiled with -rtsopts, it simply fails when it is given any RTS option either on a command line argument or in GHCRTS. Unfortunately, almost no Haskell programs are compiled with this flag, so setting this variable makes everything to fail (as I discovered in After upgrading to GHC7, all programs suddenly fail saying "Most RTS options are disabled. Link with -rtsopts to enable them."). Any ideas how to make any use of GHCRTS with GHC7, or another convenient way how to prevent my programs taking all memory?

• Install iphone sdk DMG file on iMac but I can't find where any of the programs are located

  I just download the iPhone DMG file from apple and installed in on my new iMac (by following these directions: link text). The problem is, I can't seem to find where any of the programs got installed. I can't find XCode or Interface Builder in the applications list and everytime I click on the "iPhone SDK" icon in the applications list, it re-opens finder with the same packages that I am trying to install. P/S: I am completely new to the the Mac world so I might be doing everything completely wrong.

  Home use has already (somewhat) been established, but I'm curious about business users. Approximately, what percentage of business users worldwide have .NET 3.5 runtime installed? Client profile will do, since that's what I compile my app to (though others may be interested in the full, so maybe answer that too). I'm only looking for rough estimates, but I'd like to hear separate percentage figures for: 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, 3.5 CP, 4.0, 4.0 CP, 4.5 (note: percentages won't total 100%, since many users can have two or more .NET versions simultaneously).

  Earlier I wrote a blog post about how to resolve the error with database diagram. Today I faced the same error when I was dealing with a database which is upgraded from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2. When I was searching for the solution online I ended up on my own earlier solution SQL SERVER – ERROR: FIX – Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. I really found it interesting that I ended up on my own solution. However, the solution to the problem this time was a bit different. Let us see how we can resolve the same. Error: Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects. Workaround / Fix / Solution : Follow the steps listed below and it should for sure solve your problem. (NOTE: Please try this for the databases upgraded from previous version. For everybody else you should just follow the steps mentioned here.) Select your database >> Right Click >> Select Properties Go to the Options In the Dropdown at right labeled “Compatibility Level” choose “SQL Server 2005(90)” Select FILE in left side of page In the OWNER box, select button which has three dots (…) in it Now select user ‘sa’ or NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM and click OK. This will solve your problem. However, there is one very important note you must consider. When you change any database owner, there are always security related implications. I suggest you check your security policies before changing authorization. I did this to quickly solve my problem on my development server. If you are on production server, you may open yourself to potential security compromise.   I just got a new, very wide monitor (2560x1440) and there is no sense maximizing my applications. So I installed Compiz Config Settings Manager and enabled Grid. Nothing happened, the shortcuts don't move application windows. Went to System - Preferences - Appearance, the Visual effects tab. It at "disabled". When I try to set them to "normal" or "extra", a message box appears telling me that it's searching for video drivers, then disappears, and I get an error message "Desktop effects could not be enabled". I opened Xorg.0.log, and had errors there: (EE) Failed to load /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so (II) UnloadModule: "glx" (EE) Failed to load module "glx" (loader failed, 7) (II) LoadModule: "extmod" Going to Administration - System - Hardware drivers, it said that there are no available and/or installed hardware drivers. But apt-get said that it cannot install nvidia-glx-185, as it is already installed. Googling my error message suggested that I install and run something called envyng. This let me install the nvidia drivers again, and now I can see in the Hardware Drivers window that they are installed and active. But the error message in Xorg.0.log remains, and I still cannot enable the Compiz effects or use Grid. • Lenovo S10 Ideapad will not boot while original hard drive is installed, neither from hard drive or

  Hello, first time posting here so I'll try to be very clear. I have a Lenovo S10 Ideapad netbook which fails to boot to an OS. It shows the Lenovo splash screen and can get to the BIOS but it doesn't get to GRUB (was dual booting Ubuntu 9.10 and Win 7, was working fine for months, ie this isn't a new dual boot gone bad). After the splash screen it displays a flashing cursor in the upper left corner. Power cycled to no avail. Here is what I have done trying to narrow the problem down: The machine will boot to Ubuntu using an install/live USB drive, but only if ANOTHER hard drive is installed or NO hard drive is installed. The boot order always lists USB first. Also, there is a 2 gb RAM upgrade but I think that's fine; the Ubuntu USB drive boots fine with it, and "free" sees the whole 2gb of memory. So it seems like the hard drive is bad. I was able to put the bad drive in a different laptop and mount it to recover files. I'm ready to replace the bad hard drive, but I would like to know if this situation makes any sense. If the hard drive is bad, shouldn't I still be able to boot with the Ubuntu USB drive while the bad drive is installed? I would have expected the machine to boot into Ubuntu anyway even if with a bad drive, since the boot order lists USB first. But it seems that when the bad drive is installed, the machine ignores the USB drive and hangs with the flashing cursor. Thanks for any ideas! Sorry for the long post, I just want to put all the info I have up front! Basically I'm going to buy a new drive, but I am mostly curious if this is a typical or at least not unusual situation.

• How to create a init.d script for openssh-server which was compiled and installed from source using configure + make + make install?

  I have installed openssh-server in my Ubuntu PC using apt-get install openssh-server. The version is 5.9. Now, I would like to compile and install openssh-server version 6.2 from source codes. I have successfully downloaded the source codes, and run the following commands: ./configure make make install I found that the new version of openssh-server was installed into /usr/local/sbin/. The old version of openssh-server is in /usr/sbin/. I found that the service script in /etc/init.d/ssh is still pointing to /usr/sbin/. And the old openssh-server (v5.9) is still running. How can I replace the old openssh-server with the new openssh-server that I have just compiled and installed? How can I create a init.d script to start and stop the new openssh-server that I've compiled from source manually? How to start the new openssh-server on boot? When I install openssh-server using apt-get install, the config files will be installed into /etc/ssh/. If I compile and install it from source, where is the config file? If I compiled openssh-server from source, but I install openssh-client package using apt-get install, will there be any config files conflict? Thanks.

• Native AAA games coming to Ubuntu. Where they will be installed?

  Many users use SSD disks (and I believe many more in the future) for their OS. 128GB SSD disks are common place nowadays and many users (like me) use their SSD for dual booting (Windows and Ubuntu). Ubuntu installations like this occupies 20-40 GB (/ , /home and swap). Up to now there was no problem. In a few weeks though, triple A games are coming to Ubuntu (i.e. l4d2) that require probably tens of GB for installation. In windows there is no problem, because you can install a game anywhere you want (i.e. I install games in D:/Games/). In Ubuntu, though, programs install files in many places (i.e. /usr/* , /lib, /etc ) so from what I remember, I never had the option to choose where to install a program. So, how will it be possible to install AAA games that require many GBs, when our Ubuntu installations won't have the necessary space? Could a /opt mounted on a mechanical disk (HDD) be the solution? Is it something I am missing?

  I set up a PXE server which hosts both Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server. Ubuntu Desktop is installed successfully from PXE. • How do I go back to the initial desktop I got when I first installed the latest Ubuntu?

  I researched all the other questions and can't find specifically what I'm asking. I did a new install of Ubuntu 14.04.1 and started adding tweaks. I saw the Cinnamon desktop and it looked cool, but after I installed it (with Gnome), I decided I wanted to have the native Ubuntu 14.04.1 experience. I've got Unity to show up, but the top banner is still different and I want it just like it was in the initial install. I've added about 20 updates and upgrades and really don't want to go through all that again. I appreciate your response.
