• Apache 2.2.16 + PHP 5.2.14 sometimes causes Apache to not stop properly

  Sometimes, Apache decides not to shut down nicely. killall apache2 or kill -9 (apache2 PID here) shuts it down so that it can actually start back up without the port being in use. Other posts seem to indicate that PHP 5.2 might have issues hanging up Apache. I'm using the worker MPM on an x86_64 Gentoo Linux system if that helps. Any other things I should consider hanging up Apache besides PHP? Should I be stopping Apache with /etc/init.d/apache2 gracefulstop instead of /etc/init.d/apache2 stop?

• 50 Billion Served: Java Embedded on Devices

  It doesn't matter if it is 50 billion or 24 billion, just suffice it to stay that there will be MANY connected devices in the year 2020. With just 24 billion devices, they will outnumber humans six to one! So as a developer, you don't want to ignore this opportunity. What if you could use your Java skills and deploy an app to a fraction of these devices (don't be greedy, how about just, say, 118,000 of them)? Fareed Suliman, Java ME Product Manager had lots of good news for Java Developers in his presentation Modernizing the Explosion of Advanced Microcontrollers with Embedded Java at ARM TechCon in Santa Clara, CA last week. "A radical architecture shift is underway in this space, from proprietary to standards-based," he explained.  He pointed out several advantages to using Embedded Java for devices: Java is a proven and open standard. Java provides connectivity, encryption, location, and web services APIs. You don't have to focus on and keep reinventing the plumbing below the JVM. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows you to repeat your app across many devices. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows allows parallel development so you can get your app done more quickly. You already know Java (or you can hire lots of Java talent). Java is a full ecosystem, with Java Embedded plugins for IDEs like Eclipse and NetBeans. Java ME allows for in-field software upgrades. Suliman mentioned two ways developers can start using Java Embedded today:  Java ME Embedded Suite 7.0 Oracle Java Embedded Suite is a new packaged solution from Oracle (including Java DB, GlassFish for Embedded Suite, Jersey Web Services Framework, and Oracle Java SE Embedded 7 platform), created to provide value added services for collecting, managing, and transmitting data to embedded devices such as gateways and concentrators. Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 Oracle Java ME Embedded 3.2 is designed and optimized to meet the unique requirements of small embedded, low power devices such as micro-controllers and other resource-constrained hardware without screens or user interfaces. • Segfaulting Java process

  I've a java process that is working on some large data set in memory. I've seen it crash with a SIGSEGV signal sometimes, so i was wondering some potential causes and fixes could do. All 4 servers are not under significant load in terms of CPU, memory, or disk, so I am a little unsure what is reaching it's limits or why. 503s are returned when all workers are in error state - whatever that means. • Netbeans Java SE GUI Builder: private initComponents() problem

  When I build a GUI for my Java SE app with Netbeans GUI builder, it puts all the codes in the initComponents() method which is private. I could not change it to public. So, all the components are accessible only to the class containing the UI. I want to access those components from another class so that I can write custom event handlers and everything. Most importantly I want to separate my GUI code and non-GUI from each other. I can copy paste the GUI code and later make them public by hand to achieve what I want. But thats a pain. I have to handcraft a portion whenever I need to re-design the UI. What I tried to do: I used the variable identifier to make the text box public. Now how can I access the text box from the Main class? I think I need the component generated in a public method as well. I am new to Java. Any helps?   Every now and then you come across a problem when there is nothing in the "troubleshooting manual" which can help you. Instead you need to think outside the box. This happened to me two or three years back. Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) 11g did not start. The error reported back by OPMN was generic and gave no clue, and worse the HTTP Server error log was empty, and remained so even after I had increased the OPMN and HTTP Server log levels. After checking configuration files, operating system resources, etc I was still no nearer the solution. And then the light bulb moment! OHS is based on Apache - what happens if I attempt to start HTTP Server using the native apache command. Trouble was the OHS 11g solution has its binaries and configuration files in separate "home" directories ORACLE_HOME contains the binaries ORACLE_INSTANCE contains the configuration files How to set the environment so that native apache commands run without error? • Selecting a JAX-RS implementation for a new project

  I'm starting a new Java project which will require a RESTful API. It will be a SaaS business application serving mobile clients. I have developed one project with Java EE 6, but I'm not very familiar with the ecosystem, since most of my experience is on the Microsoft platform. Which would be a sensible choice for a JAX-RS implementation for a new project such as described? Judging by Wikipedia's list, main contenders seem to be Jersey, Apache CXF, RESTeasy and Restlet. But the Comparison of JAX-RS Implementations cited on Wikipedia is from 2008. My first impressings from their respective homepages is that: CXF aims to be a very comprehensive solution (reminds me of WCF in the Microsoft space), which makes me think it can be more complex to understand, setup and debug than what I need; Jersey is the reference implementation and might be a good choice, but it's legacy from Sun and I'm not sure how Oracle is treating it (announcements page doesn't work and last commit notice is from 4 months ago); RESTeasy is from JBoss and probably a solid option, though I'm not sure about learning curve; Restlet seems to be popular but has a lot of history, I'm not sure how up-to-date it is in the Java EE 6 world or if it carries a heavy J2EE mindset (like lots of XML configuration). What would be the merits of each of these alternatives? What about learning curve? Feature support? Tooling (e.g. NetBeans or Eclipse wizards)? What about ease of debugging and also deployment? Is any of these project more up-to-date than the others? How stable are them?

  I am trying to set JAVA_HOME in Ubuntu OS. I have copied jdk 1.7 in /usr/lib/jvm and set JAVA_HOME in /etc/profile file. Martin Matula, a Senior Development Manager at Oracle on the JavaEE/GlassFish team, responsible for the area of web services (including JAX-WS and JAX-RS), was demonstrating Java EE Web Profile and Platform Technologies.Matula was previewing some Java EE 7 WebSocket early access features via a group drawing application that showcases the upcoming JSR 356, “Java API for WebSocket”, which is the API for building RESTful web services and Server-Sent Events, an HTML5 feature. He emphasized that this is supported in Jersey, the reference implementation for JAX-RS, as well.“In this demo,” Matula explained, “I have a simple JavaScript front-end talking to the back-end deployed on GlassFish. It uses RESTful web services to get the list of drawings we have. I can create new drawings and the list is updated immediately using the Server-Sent Events, so the message is coming from the server to the client. Everything is getting updated live using WebSocket, which is the bi-directional communication new protocol in HTML5. This is using Project Jersey and Project Tyrus. Tyrus is the implementation of WebSocket protocol for Java. Jersey implements the RESTful APIs as well as the Server-Sent Events protocol.”

• JSR updates - First Merged EC Ballots

  As the second part of the JCP.Next effort, JCP 2.9 launched 2 weeks ago on 13 November, and the first JCP EC ballots with the Merged EC have concluded.   JSR 339, JAX-RS 2.0: The Java API for RESTful Web Services, passed EC Public Review Ballot and was approved by the EC -- 22 yes votes, 2 abstain, 2 did not vote -- view results. JSR 349, Bean Validation 1.1, passed EC Public Review Ballot and was approved by the EC --17 yes votes, 2 abstain, 5 did not vote --  view results.

• Compiling JS-Test-Driver Plugin and Installing it on Eclipse 3.5.1 Galileo?

  I downloaded the source of the js-test-driver from: http://js-test-driver.googlecode.com/svn/tags/1.2 It compiles just fine, but one of the unit tests fails: [junit] Tests run: 1, Failures: 1, Errors: 0, Time elapsed: 0.012 sec [junit] Test com.google.jstestdriver.eclipse.ui.views.FailureOnlyViewerFilterTest FAILED I am using: - ANT 1.7.1 - javac 1.6.0_12 And I'm trying to install the js-test-driver plugin on Eclipse 3.5.1 Galileo Despite the failed test I installed the plugin into my C:\eclipse\dropins\js-test-driver directory by copying (exporting from svn) the compiled feature and plugins directories there, to see if it would yield any hints to what the problem is. When I started eclipse, added the plugin to the panel using Window-Show View-Other... Other-JsTestDriver The plugin for the panel is added, but it displays the following error instead of the plugin in the panel: Could not create the view: Plugin com.google.jstestdriver.eclipse.ui was unable to load class com.google.jstestdriver.eclipse.ui.views.JsTestDriverView.
