• Tips on how to deploy C++ code to work every where

  I'm not talking about making portable code. This is more a question of distribution. I have a medium-sized project. It has several dependencies on common libraries (eg openssl, zlib, etc). It compiles fine on my machine and now it's time to give it to the world. Essentially build engineering at its finest. I want to make installers for Windows, Linux, MacOSX, etc. I want to make a downloadable tar ball that will make the code work with a ./configure and a make (probably via autoconf). It would be icing on the cake to have a make option that would build the installers..maybe even cross-compile so a Windows installer could be built in Linux. What is the best strategy? Where can I expect to spend the most time? Should the prime focus be autoconf or are there other tools that can help?

• Program crash for array copy with ifort

I don't see any problem. Any ideas ? Unrolling the copy and performing the explicit loop over the columns works in both compilers. Note that with allocatable instead of pointer I have no problems. The behavior is the same if the statement is either inside a module or not. I confirm the same behavior on Linux using ifort (IFORT) 12.1.3 20120130.

• OpenCL support on Leopard

  I want to use OpenCL in my software but I am running Leopard. I will probably update to Snow Leopard later. In the mean time I would like to get started with OpenCL in Leopard. Setting up on 10.5 is confusing: most SDKs and articles assume that you must be using Snow Leopard. Searching for "Using OpenCL on Leopard" is completely useless, as you would expect. I downloaded the cuda toolkit, devdriver and gpucomputing SDK from nvidia but the examples won't compile because OpenCL/opencl.h is not found. The OpenCL release notes don't mention MacOSX so again I think this is assuming that all Mac users are running Snow Leopard. Where can I find OpenCL includes and libraries for Mac OSX 10.5 ? Or, is this just a waste of time and I should go and get Snow Leopard ASAP ? After upgrading to Snow Leopard I would like my software to support Leopard. Is this possible ?

• Mac OS X Lion no longer recognizes environment.plist?

  Just installed Lion today and my PATH env variable is no longer being set by ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist. Did something change? Can't seem to find any info on that or how to fix. Any ideas? • Unsafe, super-fast cross-process memory buffer?

  Cross-process memory buffers always have some overhead, and my understanding is this is quite high. But what if you're implementing a cross-process render-buffer, this isn't critically important in the same way as other data so are there techniques we can use to get 'raw' access to a chunk of memory from multiple processes, with no safety nets apart from it not crashing? Or do modern operating systems simply not work with unabstracted memory in a way to make this possible? I'm working in C++ but the question applies to Win XP/Vista/7, MacOSX 10.5+ (& Linux less importantly).

• Detect NativeDragDrop to Trash or RecycleBin

  I will let user remove item from List with a cool method. Drag an item in adobe air List control and then drop it to Trash(OSX) or Recycle Bin(Win). The trash accept move drag action only. So I think I must set dragMoveEnable=true. When I drag an item to Recycle Bin on Windows. It show accept effect(alpha mask) and Air remove that object from List's dataProvider. So I can find which one is disappear. But when I drag to Trash on MacOSX. It show effect too. But Air do nothing for List. Maybe this is a bug. How can I avoid it? Are there any way to detect where dropped by user?

• Using MVP, how to create a view from another view, linked with the same model object

  Background We use the Model-View-Presenter design pattern along with the abstract factory pattern and the "signal/slot" pattern in our application, to fullfill 2 main requirements Enhance testability (very lightweight GUI, every action can be simulated in unit tests) Make the "view" totally independant from the rest, so we can change the actual view implementation, without changing anything else In order to do so our code is divided in 4 layers : Core : which holds the model Presenter : which manages interactions between the view interfaces (see bellow) and the core View Interfaces : they define the signals and slots for a View, but not the implementation Views : the actual implementation of the views When the presenter creates or deals with views, it uses an abstract factory and only knows about the view interfaces. It does the signal/slot binding between views interfaces. It doesn't care about the actual implementation. In the "views" layer, we have a concrete factory which deals with implementations. The signal/slot mechanism is implemented using a custom framework built upon boost::function. Let's take for example a very simple drag and drop example. I have two ContainersViews (ContainerView1, ContainerView2). ContainerView1 has an ItemView1. I drag the ItemView1 from ContainerView1 to ContainerView2. ContainerView2 must create an ItemView2, of a different type, but which "points" to the same model object as ItemView1. So the ContainerView2 gets a callback called for the drop action with ItemView1 as a parameter. It calls ContainerPresenterB passing it ItemViewB In this case we are only dealing with views. In MVP-PV, views aren't supposed to know anything about the presenter nor the model, right ? How can I create the ItemView2 from the ItemView1, not knowing which model object is ItemView1 representing ? I thought about adding an "itemId" to every view, this id being the id of the core object the view represents. So in pseudo code, ContainerPresenter2 would do something like itemView2=abstractWidgetFactory.createItemView2(); this.add(itemView2,itemView1.getCoreObjectId()) I don't get too much into details. That just work. The problem I have here is that those itemIds are just like pointers. And pointers can be dangling. Imagine that by mistake, I delete itemView1, and this deletes coreObject1. The itemView2 will have a coreObjectId which represents an invalid coreObject. Isn't there a more elegant and "bulletproof" solution ? Even though I never did ObjectiveC or macOSX programming, I couldn't help but notice that our framework is very similar to Cocoa framework. How do they deal with this kind of problem ? Couldn't find more in-depth information about that on google. If someone could shed some light on this. I hope this question isn't too confusing ...

• API numbers don't match on compiled PHP extension

  I'm trying to get GD into my PHP. I recently installed PHP5.3.0 on my system running Mac Leopard using mac ports. It did not come with the gd module. So I downloaded gd, compiled it as an extension module as per http://www.kenior.ch/macintosh/adding-gd-library-for-mac-os-x-leopard, made php.ini point to it, restarted apache etc. But no GD. So in apache error log it says PHP Warning: PHP Startup: gd: Unable to initialize module\nModule compiled with module API=20060613\nPHP compiled with module API=20090115\nThese options need to match\n in Unknown on line 0 So a bit of googling says I should not use the phpize I have before configuring and making these. I should use a new one called phpize5. I surely don't have any such thing. Unless its packed up inside something else in my php5.3. distro. Where do you get it. In Ubuntu I could just run sudo apt-get install php-dev, (apparently) and it would just appear by magic. At least that's what the webpage said. Unfortunately I am running MacOSX version Leopard. How can I build this GD module on Leopard so that it will match the API number in my PHP?

  I installed Redmine on MacOSX Server 10.6.8 according to this installation description. So far everything works fine: When I start webrick the server serves the Redmine pages. The gems and redmine are installed under the user "redmine". After that I aimed configuring apache2 with passenger as described here. As suggested by the description I also installed the passenger-pane which stores its virtual host configuration files in /private/etc/apache2/passenger_pane_vhosts. This is what I came up with after a lot of manual try and error. • VMware Workstation reboot 32-bit host when starting 64-bit guest

  I'm trying to start 64-bit guest (MacOSX and Windows7) on 32-bit host (Hardened Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.28-hardened-r9) using VMware Workstation (6.5.3.185404 and 7.0.1.227600). If VT-X disabled in BIOS, VMware refuse to start 64-bit guest (as expected). If VT-X enabled in BIOS, VMware start guest without complaining, but then, in about a second (I suppose as soon as guest try to switch on 64-bit) my host reboots (actually, it's more like reset - normal reboot procedure skipped and BIOS POST start immediately). My hardware is Core 2 Duo 6600 on ASUS P5B-Deluxe with latest stable BIOS 1101. I've power-cycled system, then enabled Vanderpool in BIOS. My CPU doesn't support Trusted Execution Technology, and there no way to disable it in BIOS. I've rebooted several times after that, sometimes with power-cycled, and ensure Vandertool is enabled in BIOS. I've also run VMware-guest64check-5.5.0-18463 tool, and it report "This host is capable of running a 64-bit guest operating system under this VMware product.". About a year ago I tried to disable hardened in kernel to ensure this isn't because of PaX/GrSecurity, but that doesn't help. I have not checked 32-bit guests with VT-X enabled yet, but without VT-X they works ok. ASUS provide "beta" BIOS updates, but according to their descriptions these updates doesn't fix this issue, so I'm not sure is it good idea to try it. My best guess now it's motherboard/BIOS bug. Any ideas?

• Eclipse: Slow startup time

  Hello, I've got Eclipse 3.6.1 on my MacBook Air (2010), and I'm getting slowish startup times. Well, slow, compared to my Desktop, which is somewhat less powerful and a few years old). The startup generally takes 15 seconds, and of this, 4 is spent just on the Eclipse splash screen, before Eclipse loads anything. No projects are open at startup. OS is Mac OS X 10.6.6, latest Java available, 1.6. For comparison, my Desktop, an old P4 3GHZ (512K L2 Cache) with a 7200RPM drive, under 40% free space, Eclipse (same config) loads in under 7 seconds, consistently. Note, this one is a Windows machine, with latest Java installed.

• Linux drivers for laser printer Konica Minolta Magicolor 4750DN

  I would like to install the konica minolta magicolor 4750DN in Linux (debian 64 bits, I know it's not really supported but that's not the issue right now) but all the manual says is "put the CD rom in and copy the drivers and PPD file". However I did not get the CD ! On their "fantastic" internet site (...) there are only available drivers for Windows and Mac OSX. I tried to extract the ppd file from the .dmg file for MacOSX 10.7 but, if the PPD file works, a compiled file (only mac compiled, MACH 4 architectures says the "file" command) does not (obviously "cannot execute binary file", since I'm trying to run a Mac file on Linux). Is there anybody who has the same printer that could lend me the Linux drivers on the CD ROM ? Couldn't find them anywhere on the internet. Any way to execute a Mach (or BSD) binary file on Linux (I don't think is possible, although some "emulators" may exist). Thank you very much. I buyed this printer even because it was advertised as "Linux compatible", only to get this bad surprise. I would be grateful if you could help me solve this problem.

• What is auto-mounting my media volume?

  Something is repeatedly mounting my "media" share, doing something with it, then quietly un-mounting it with no notifications at the user level. from the little I can gleaned from the console messages below, I thought I'd managed to stop it, if not understand it last night when I followed instructions for deleting all traces of the Google Update Daemon. I've not been using any Google apps whatsoever, so I was surprised to see that in Console. What's more surprising, and perhaps a little distressing, is that the same thing occurred this evening, when the Google Daemon is long gone. I don't have that log because I can't recall precisely what time it occurred. I'll do a search and provide it if you wish, though. In the meantime, any help with this would be extremely appreciated. I've asked over at Apple Discussions but I think it might be a little deeper than those manning the boards this weekend are comfortable with. It's certainly beyond my meager skills. With apologies in advance if this is more lines thank you need. • debugging connection to mysql from python script using MySQLdb

  I am a python newbie and have a python 2.5 script that is using MySQLdb to connect on OS X 10.5.8. I haven't been able to succesfully connect to the database of interest with this. However, I am able to connect using php's mysqli and also via the mysql cli interface. I get the error: File "build/bdist.macosx-10.5-i386/egg/MySQLdb/connections.py", line 188, in __init__ _mysql_exceptions.OperationalError: (1045, "Access denied for user 'arc_development'@'localhost' (using password: YES)") On my linux box which has the same mysql perms, the script works fine logging in. On my OS X laptop, I am able to create a database named test_python which bypasses mysql authentication scheme. This makes me think that issues like 32bit / 64bit incompatabilities aren't occuring. If I turn on the query log, I get access denied: 100610 20:56:55 4 Connect Access denied for user 'arc_development'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I'm a little bit at a loss to what to do next. Is there any way I can specify in the general log or binary log to get the actual password set on the connection string? How about writing out from connections.py file the value (although not sure how I'd do that)? thanks

• External-Harddisk drive couldn't run unless in safe mode

  This is the strangest thing ever happened to me... I have an external harddisk drive (ext-HDD), bought around 2 years ago (don't know whether this is an important issue or not). Here, I have a video file (.avi) in my internal harddisk dive (HDD), it worked very well, then I copy it to my ext-HDD, but I couldn't run the file directly from my ext-HDD! I tried to copy it back to my HDD (from the ext-HDD), and now the copy couldn't be run on my HDD too. Remember that I copy the file, so the original one was still there. I tried to go to safe mode (forget to mention, I use Windows 7 Pro), and this is where the strange thing happened, the copied files (both in ext-HDD and HDD) can be run in this safe mode. So, my question is, what could actually be happened there? PS: My ext-HDD is Axioo, 250 GB, exFAT... Edited: Currently I used MacOSX, and the file in the harddisk still can't be run. I haven't tried safe mode for Mac (is there one?), but will try later (if there is)

• GPG - why am I encrypting with subkey instead of primary key?

  When encrypting a file to send to a collaborator, I see this message: gpg: using subkey XXXX instead of primary key YYYY Why would that be? I've noticed that when they send me an encrypted file, it also appears to be encrypted towards my subkey instead of my primary key. For me, this doesn't appear to be a problem; gpg (1.4.x, macosx) just handles it & moves on. But for them, with their automated tool setup, this seems to be an issue, and they've requested that I be sure to use their primary key. I've tried to do some reading, and I have the Michael Lucas's "GPG & PGP" book on order, but I'm not seeing why there's this distinction. I have read that the key used for signing and the key used for encryption would be different, but I assumed that was about public vs private keys at first. In case it was a trust/validation issue, I went through the process of comparing fingerprints and verifying, yes, I trust this key. While I was doing that, I noticed the primary & subkeys had different "usage" notes: primary: usage: SCA subkey: usage: E "E" seems likely to mean "Encryption". But, I haven't been able to find any documentation on this. Moreover, my collaborator has been using these tools & techniques for some years now, so why would this only be a problem for me?

• Including an embedded framework using a cross-project-reference: Header no such file or directory

  I'm trying to create a Cocoa framework by using a cross-project reference in Xcode. I have 2 projects: one for the framework; one for the application that will use the framework. This framework is not intended to be stored within the system; it is an embedded framework that lives within the application bundle. I have successfully made the cross-project reference, marked the framework as being a dependency of my target, added a Copy Files build phase that puts the framework in Contents/Frameworks/ and added the framework to the linker phase (I checked the little "Target" checkbox; I've also done it manually by dragging the framework into the linker phase). My framework's install directory is correctly set to @executable_path/../Frameworks. However, when I try to build my app it: a) Correctly builds the framework first b) Correctly copies the framework c) Errors because it cannot find the master header file in my framework I have verified that the header is there. I can see it in the app product that is partially built. ls build/Debug/CioccolataTest.webapp/Contents/Frameworks/Cioccolata.framework/Headers/Cioccolata.h build/Debug/CioccolataTest.webapp/Contents/Frameworks/Cioccolata.framework/Headers/Cioccolata.h I have been able to successfully build the app by copying my framework into /Library/Frameworks (I can then delete it again after the successful build), but this is a workaround, I'm looking to find it out why Xcode doesn't find the framework's master header file without it being copied to a system directory. Is copying it to the app bundle during the build not sufficient?   I'm currently running the latest version of MAMP on my Snow Leopard OSX, and I'm trying to install MySQLDB. Downloaded: MySQL-python-1.2.3c1 I went into the setup_posix.py and adjusted the location of the mysql_config to the one in MAMP: mysql_config.path = "/Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql_config" When trying to build I get the error below. • OpenCV Video capture and fps problem

  Hi to all, I'm capturing video from my webcam using OpenCV on MacOSX. It works fine but when I try to play on QuickTime my captured video it plays too fast. i.e. I capture from camera for 10 seconds but when I play on QuickTime the video is 2 seconds. I've tried to change fps from 25 to 10 and It's works quite fine, but I'm sure it's not the correct process: CvVideoWriter *writer = 0; int isColor = 1; int fps = 25; int frameW = 640; // 744 for firewire cameras int frameH = 480; // 480 for firewire cameras The problem is that for now I've to capture with WebCam but the real pourpose of program is to capture image from any external source connected to my Mac. I'm using this code to capture: for (;;) { cvGrabFrame(capture) image = cvRetrieveFrame(capture); cvWriteFrame( writer, image ); } Any hint? I'm also showing webcam output on cvNamedWindow, how can I improve quality in this windows? thanks a lot to all! Andrea!

• UI design in flash games

  This question is more UI/Design-ish than hard-core programming is. Background: I've been coding in VIM/C++/OpenGL for a long time. I've come to realize that this (VIM/C++/OpenGL) isn't the way to learn about programming fancy/cool-looking/futuristic UIs; and that the design of such UIs belongs more so in the artistic/designer world of Flash. Anyway, I currently have a machine with MacOSX. What software should I install? What book should I read to learn about the artistic/design side of these futuristic UIs? [It's okay if the tools to design them are mouse clicking + graphical rather than coding based]. Question: what software packages + books to read to learn about creating fancy-looking / futuristic UIs in flash? Thanks! EDIT: PS these questions seem to get closed frequently. • How to avoid XCode framework weak-linking problems?

  Hi, I'm building an application that takes advantage of Mac OS X 10.6-only technologies, but without giving up backwards compatibility to 10.5 Leopard. The way I do this is by setting the 10.6 SDK as the base SDK, weak-linking all frameworks and setting the deployment target to 10.5 as described in: http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/DOCUMENTATION/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPFrameworks/Concepts/WeakLinking.html This works fine; before making a call that is Snow Leopard-only I need to check that the selector or indeed the class actually exist. Or I can just check the OS version before making the call. The problem is that this is incredibly fragile. If I make a single call that is 10.6 only I blow Leopard-compatibility. So using even the normal code code completion feature can be dangerous. My question: is there any way of checking which calls are not defined on 10.5 before doing a release build? Some kind of static analysis, or even just a trick (a target set the other SDK?) would do. I obviously should test on a Leopard machine before releasing anything, but even so I can't possibly go through all paths of the program before every release. Any advice would be appreciated.
