• Windows 7 Explorer keeps crashing

  I currently have an issue with Windows Explorer. It keeps crashing when I browse through a network drive. This is happening on several computers. • Laptop Most Likely to Have Good Driver Support

  Through numerous bad experiences, I have learned that the most likely cause of laptop "failure" is the lack of updated drivers for new operating systems. As an example, I have a perfectly good Thinkpad T42 at home which runs Windows 7 just fine for my purposes except that no compatible ATI video drivers are available, and the generic drivers have flicker effects. I recently saw an ASUS laptop which looked quite nice except that I would be beholden to them to release ATI video driver updates customized for it. And, I can't trust them to do that for more than six months. What laptops (manufacturer/line) should I consider so that I could expect at least a couple years of frequent updates? I plan on running Windows 7 and installing whatever successor comes out. I like Intel components (especially WiFi) because I can install their drivers directly from them, and they have a long history of providing updates for years after shipping a particular component. More generally, components from companies which are likely to update drivers frequently are good as long as I can install the component manufacturer-provided drivers without laptop-specific customization (like the ATI drivers). Also, if a component can be replaced easily, I am less concerned. For example, Dell stopped pumping out updated drivers for one of its mini-PCI WiFi cards. The solution was to buy an Intel replacement on eBay for $12! That's fine. I can deal with that. So, what laptops should I consider so that I'm not likely to be stuck between a rock and a hard place?

• Are there compact external USB audio interfaces which are better than a on-board sound?

  I am asking this for a friend. He loves his voice recognition software and dictates a lot of text using a headset. Now he has a new laptop, which only has a combined mic/headphones output, and wanted to buy an adapter. I told him to get an external USB sound interface instead, as the better sound quality will probably increase the hit rate of the voice recognition. He agreed, but when he saw a picture of the SoundBlaster X-Fi, he said that it is way too big, because he wants to carry the thing everywhere. He'd rather have one of these small things which are the size of a flash memory stick, with only one mic and one phones output, period. Now I am not sure whether these mini interfaces would produce a sound better than onboard sound. They all seem to come not from established audio interface manufacturers, but from electronic accessories manufacturers like Speedlink, or just noname brands. Is there a compact audio interface with good A/D quality (it is OK if the price is comparable to that of the bigger interfaces, even if there is no additional functionality like Chinch in-/output etc)?. And if there isn't, will the noname soundcardsticks offer any advantage over a simple adaptor for the onboard sound?

• Setting up VPN with Snow Leopard Server and Linksys router

  I'd like to get VPN going so I can log in to the office securely from home. I'm using Snow Leopard machines everywhere, and currently have Airport Extremes set up at home and at the office. I have a mac mini with Snow Leopard Server that I'm going to move to the office to act as my server. I just bought a Linksys 4-port router because it says it does VPN (model RVS4000). My problem is, I don't have a clue how to set this thing up, and the more reading I do, the more confused I get. Do I need two of these routers, one at each end? My laptop and iPad claim they can do VPN, so I was assuming I only needed one VPN router? At this point, I literally don't know what questions to ask, or where to plug this thing in. Presumably, between the modem and the airport, but...? If somebody can walk me thru some really basic setup, I'd be very grateful. Right now, I feel like going outside and screaming for a while. But that might attract the local cougar, and after the prints I saw on the arena this afternoon, I don't want to draw its attention. :-)

• Slow Local Network, Windows 7, Snow Leopard, WiFi/Wired

  I am experiencing really poor local network performance in my home. I was recently using a Linksys WRT54G Router with DD-WRT on it, and a couple comparable Linksys-G PCI cards for connectivity but decided to upgrade hoping it would help with my performance issues. The computers in my house are connected as follows: Comcast Business Class Commercial 25mbps/10mbps (Verified) D-Link DGL-4500 Wireless N Router Windows 7x64 - D-Link DWA-552 Wireless-N Windows 7x64 - D-Link DWA-552 Wireless-N Mac Mini 10.6.2 - AirPort Extreme N Playstation 3, Hard Wired Xbox 360, Hard Wired Essentially the problem is very specific. Web browsing and uploading/downloading files from the internet is fine, more than fine. But if I want to say, Stream a video from one of my Windows 7 computers to my PS3, or copy a large video file between either of the PC's or the Mac, I get a consistent 500-900Kbps throughput at the high end. If I open my network browser, or try to browse my homegroup the response time is horrible. Both of my Windows computers are showing Strong wireless signals with a connection speed of 300Mbps. I know I can never expect to achieve anything near those speeds, but 500Kbps? Here is what I have tried so far: Enabled Single mode N-only and N/G Only on router WPA2 with AES Encrpytion Disabled "Remote Differential Compression" in Windows 7 Disabled TCP "Auto-Tuning" Used other software for file copies such as "Teracopy" I am at the end of my rope. Unfortunately I live in a 75 year old home with plaster walls, so hard-wiring my entire house isn't really an option I can handle right now. Any ideas to help me get decent speed when transferring files across my network would be greatly appreciated.

• Frequent freezes with constant disk activity on SSD netbook

  I am running Arch Linux on an HP Mini 1000 with a SSD. The machine is a little under a year old and fairly heavily used. About a month ago the machine started freezing up. During the freezes, the system is almost completely unresponsive, seemingly especially for disk-intensive tasks such as launching an application for the first time since reboot. The disk activity led is always constantly illuminated during the freezes. After somewhere between 30 sec and 3 minutes, the machine returns to normal operation. I am pretty sure that the SSD is the source or the problem. Iotop reports a disk transfer rate of 0 during the freezes, so I think it must be getting "stuck" and simply not performing any r/w during the time. I can't seem to find any information on these symptoms on the Internet, so any input on exactly what might be the cause of this would be greatly appreciated. The machine is under warranty, but I would rather not deal with HP until I actually know what is going on. Thanks.

• Pinging computer name in LAN results in public IP?

  Hi, I recently introduced a new machine to my LAN. The computer name for this machine is 'server'. Historically I've been able to access machines from my home network (from a web browser or RDP) using the machine name and it resolves to a local IP address just fine. However, I can't seem to do this anymore. When I ping the computer name, I get the following: C:\Users\Robert>ping server Pinging server.router [67.215.65.132] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=54 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=54 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=54 Reply from 67.215.65.132: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=54 I notice also that it appends the 'router' suffix to my domain name for some reason. 'router' is the name of my router, obviously. I'm also using OpenDNS as my DNS provider (configured through my router so it gets passed down through DHCP). Why is this not working for me? Can someone explain how the DNS resolution should take place? For LAN resolution, it shouldn't go straight to OpenDNS. I thought that each Windows machine kept it's own sort of "mini DNS server" that knows about all machines on the local network and it first tries to resolve using that. Please let me know what I can do to get this working!

• How to implement a virtual server running Ubuntu inside a fileserver in windows?

  I work in a company that has some limitations regarding their budget. They need client/server aplication. I can code the aplication, I've made mini tests on primordial applications that work. The thing is that they only have fileservers, and the application they need must be concurrent compliant, so the database must be in their local network (Fileserver is the only choice). So far, I have explored almost any option available, starting with: Desktop databases. Access (We have a license)(But concurreny is just not effective, besides it's a windows software, yuck). Sqlite (Nice, but since the information they manage is a lot, I've performed some concurrency tests with INSERTs and doing SELECTS at the same time). It fails, somehow it just stops inserting. Open office Base (I dismember a base office only to see that it was a file mode HSQLDB). I've tried, not concurrent at all. Etc (You name the Open source Desktop Database manager, and yes, I've tried that one.) Server databases Call me a stubborn person, but reading some server databases documentation say that their databases will work in a file mode. I've tried a lot of products. Postgres, MySQL, FireBird, H2, Derby, Oracle Express, IBM DB2 Express, etc. So, I really need a hand here, I've been doing this install/delete/depression thing with a lot of databases for 3 weeks, until I got with a crazy idea and I just came here to express it. So, my question comes down to this: Installing a light virtual OS software like Virtual PC and then installing in there a Server OS like an Ubuntu server inside that virtual software will work? Will it work 24/7 or when I close the virtual pc software? Will this work in a fileserver? Any suggestion, answer, critic to the place I work, crazy new concurrent database that will work in fileserver will be most than welcome.

• Ubuntu: Network connection seems to fail after some time

  I just bought a Shuttle XS-35 barebone mini-PC and put a 1 TB WD hard drive and 2 Gigs of RAM into it and installed Ubuntu onto it. The machine will post as a media server (streaming videos to my PS3) and as a webserver for some small private projects. Now I wanted to copy my videos from my Windows 7 machine to the Ubuntu machine and therefore created a Samba share on the Ubuntu machine. I tried copying the files with the standard Windows copy function and with SyncToy but after some time (sometimes 5 copied files, sometimes 120 copied files) the Samba share just disappears. When that happens I can't reach the internet from the Ubuntu machine although the network connection still seems to be fine (IP still there etc.). Between the machines lies a LinkSys router. When I try to ping my router (after the connection doesn't work anymore) from the Ubuntu machine only a very small subset of the packages actually get there (something around 20%). When I restart the Ubuntu machine everything seems to work normal again. I have no idea where the problem lies here. Does anybody have a clue? Thanks in advance!

• Connecting a Wifi router to receivers with a cable instead of antenna?

  This is a very strange question--I'd go so far as to say it's a stupid question. I'm being told that it is possible to, to describe it briefly, use a cable to connect an access point and a receiver directly to one another. This means that I would unscrew the access point's antenna, and attach one end of a cable to the port. Then, on the wireless receiver, I would also unscrew the antenna and plug in the other side of the cable. I'm being told the connection would work after this, just as a normal Wifi connection would. Bonus mini-question: if this works, would it still work if a splitter were attached to the access point and multiple receivers plugged in to the network? What would happen if I do this? Based on my surprisingly deficient knowledge of radio transmission, I don't think it would work. I would like some help knowing why it won't (or will) though, if possible. This is a somewhat hypothetical question--I realize that Ethernet does this exact job very handily, and I could just throw in a switch instead of the splitter. I simply feel that I should understand this scenario. Thanks for any help you can offer.

• W7-pro indexing mydoc on disk partition does not work

  I am working on a HP-7100 mini tower running W7 Pro 64bits. My Local HD includes C:/ + 2 disk partitions : all my documents are located on disk partition L:/ and all my media files are on disk partition M:/ The indexing process works well on C:/ and M:/ but does not index the L:/ any more also all of them are allowed to be indexed, also the system is present on all drive security tabs. I have tested to rebuilt the indexing file with a new setting including few directories present on drive C/M/L but still with L: does not work ! One more thing I can tell you is that even after rebuilding the indexing file, I can find some residual directories or files which are out of the test selection. It is like unerased components remaining in the indexing database. As I do not know precisely how the indexing process works it is hard to know what to do ... Recently I had a bad time after using a past restoration procedure ... maybe it did corrupt the indexing file ???? If I start indexing the all L:/ disk partition the system stop at 39 found index also many more are existing .... Does any one from you guys could advise the process to create a new indexing database ... ? Any idea to get out of this mess ? Many thanks for assistance Yvan

  Hello HP Mini 210 I am trying to install windows starter 7. Currently I have installed fedora 14 xfce. And I have allocated 24 GB NTFS for hard disk for the windows partition. My current partitions are as follows: /dev/sda2 97G 4.9G 91G 6% / tmpfs 494M 92K 494M 1% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 485M 68M 392M 15% /boot /dev/sda5 169G 26G 135G 16% /home I have created a boot USD to install windows starter 7. When the computer boots into the windows setup and I selected the partition I want to install windows on. I get the following message: "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition." This is setup displaying all my partitions: Disk 0 Partition 1 500MB 0 Primary Disk 0 Partition 2 97.7GB 0 Primary Disk 0 Partition 3 4GB 0 Primary Disk 0 Partition 4 171.3GB 0 Logical Disk 0 Partition 5 24.6GB 24.5 Logical <-- Trying install on this partition NTFS I have also tried to delete the partition in setup and create a new one. And also tried to format the partition. However, I still get the same error message. Many thanks for any advice,

• Diagnosing RAM issues

  I have an old Acer Aspire T180 desktop. The specs are as follows: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz 1GB DDR2 SDRAM 160GB DVD-Writer (DVD±R/±RW) Gigabit Ethernet 17" Active Matrix TFT Color LCD Windows Vista Home Basic Mini-tower AST180-UA381B According to the information in the computer's documentation the computer comes with 1 GB of RAM. It has two DDR2 SDRAM sticks. I used to have Windows Vista installed. Then I removed it and install Windows 7, and now I have since removed Windows 7 and installed Windows XP. According to Windows XP with both RAM sticks in the computer has 768 MB. Isn't this supposed to be 1 GB of RAM or 1024 MB of RAM? Is the amount of RAM installed only partly used by the Operating System? Is there's something I'm missing? If I remove either one of the RAM sticks I'm left with 448 MB of RAM. These numbers don't seem to add up. If each of the RAM sticks contains at least 448 MB of RAM shouldn't they (both being in) provide 896 MB of RAM. Even then, isn't that less than a GB of RAM? I'm not too experienced in hardware so I thought this would be the best place to ask. As a follow up question, is the RAM I have enough to run/multitask with Windows XP efficiently? I plan to do a lot of computing with the system (although not gaming), should I invest in more RAM?

• Can anyone help me make my reverse proxy actually cache?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to configure a Reverse Caching Proxy but so far have had no luck. I would preferrably like to use apache (that will be all it will be used for), but am open to solutions using other software that can also run on Mac OS X 10.6 (I have also tried using Varnish and Squid, but with no more luck). We're running a system with about 80 mac mini clients that will be requesting lots of video from a server. To reduce load, we thought we could use Apache (which comes on the macs by default) to cache this video forever (or at least as long as possible) onto the macs' disks. I have managed to get a reverse proxy set up with apache using ProxyPass etc, but when i tried to add CacheEnable disk / to the configuration, nothing happened (i do have mod_disk_cache included). Can anyone help with my issue? The apache config file is here Thanks in advance Edit: So far I have been testing it with smaller text files, and it hasn't been caching properly. This suggests it is nothing to do with us actually downloading video, but actually to do with the cache configuration.

• Over gigabit connection, Teracopy does 31MB/s, but Windows 8 does it at ~109MB per second?

  I got my brain-melting first taste of Gigabit networking today, between my 2011 MacMini and Windows 8 Pro desktop connected via Cat.5e to Linksys WRT320N(sporting dd-WRT). After making sure that the line speed on both systems showed 1Gbps, I proceeded to copying a 2.4GB MP4 from the Mini to the Win 8 desktop (SMB sharing). Although satisfied with the 30-34 MB/s that Teracopy was showing (that was a proper step-up for me from 10 MB/s), I still was curious about this massive difference in the advertised and real-world speed. 2 hours of Google had me believing that there were other factors that resulted in less speed, SMB being one. So just for the sake of doing it, I iPerf'd both the systems and guess what that showed - around 875mbps on both systems! I then stumbled upon this little piece of info after which I turned off Teracopy and copied the same file through Windows 8's regular copier. 109 MB/s. Molten brains :) What exactly is causing this? And can I enable such speeds via Teracopy? I really dig the extra features that Teracopy has, will surely miss them now :D

• Does anyone know where I could find a 2 input USB voltage meter?

  What we really need is a tiny UPS, of sorts. We'll be hooking up a solar cell and a battery to a single board computer. Currently, that SBC is a custom Pic32 device, and it does it's own UPS and voltage monitoring duties. I've been tasked with trying to replicate all of its features with off the shelf products... and for the most part I've succeeded. But I don't currently have any way to switch between two sources of juice, or monitor when they're getting low. We might even work it in though it does 12V and I'll probably be using 5V... there are enough engineers on hand to figure out something. But I'd still have no idea what the voltage was for the PV or battery. I was hoping that there was some simple little USB multimeter thing that I could use to monitor this with, but I can't seem to come up with anything. I've found all sorts of cool hardware, but nothing that will help us. Does anyone know of anything?

• Auto-focus xdvi after running viewdvi in Emacs with AUCTeX.

  I've been using emacs with AUCTeX mode to edit my latex documents for a few days now, but there's something that's really bugging me. As it should be, whenever I do C-c C-c RET it compiles the file, and if repeat the command it views the output in xdvi. It's also set to the mini-mode TeX-source-specials-mode, so instead of opening a new window in xdvi it only reloads the window that's already open, brings it to the front, and sends me to wherever the pointer was in emacs (forward search). Now here's the problem: Even though the xdvi window is brought to the front, it's not focused. Instead, the emacs windows stays with focus (and that's where any keyboard input goes). And I keep forgetting about that, which leads me to accidentally editing the source file while trying to navigate in xdvi. Not to mention I'm forced to alt-tab in order to focus xdvi, and alt-tab twice if I just want to get back to emacs. Is there a way around this problem? I just want xdvi to be focused whenever I run the view command from emacs.

• Hard Drive problem: is it the SATA controller or the HDD itself?

  I have a Samsung 1.5TB hard drive hooked up to an ECS H55H-I mini-ITX motherboard. I have XBMC 10 (modified Ubuntu 10.04) installed for use as an HTPC. The hard drive encounters occasional errors during normal use which cause it to be remounted read-only. I have updated the BIOS on the motherboard, changed the SATA cable and moved it to different ports on the motherboard, installed and re-installed the OS (including different versions of XBMC and generic ubuntu), all to no avail. I recently ran tests both with badblocks -sv and smartctl -t long. Both reported no errors. This makes me think the motherboard or SATA controller is probably the issue. Does anyone know of any further tests I can do to help narrow this down? The processor is a Core i3. I forget the model number but it's one of the 32nm ones with on-package graphics. There's no discrete video card or optical drive. The power supply is a 150W Rosewill (pretty sure) that came with the case.

• OSX server setup suggestions

  I am looking into the possibility to setup an OSX server for my employees, and would like some input on what is the best approach to meet my needs, and perhaps some suggestions if I am moving in the wrong direction. I am thinking of a Mac Mini OSX server, and are not sure if my needs will be met, and what possibilities are out there. I want these capabilities: - Groups/Users managed on server - Shared folders and private folders for users/groups - Access to activated services - Server hosting software for the users (developing tools ++) - Similar to Windows Terminal Server - Virtual desktop environment (both local and over internet/VPN) - Possible to access trough Mac and Windows The reason I am looking at OSX server is that my employees almost only work in OSX environment, and I want to offer the capabilities to logon to the server trough some kind of terminal software, and have full access to their work OSX environment and software on their mac or pc, from anywhere they might be. Instead of having to have multiple setups and need for spending alot of time installing and setting up needed software on every client. This is a small business, where some work on local network, and others from the internet, preferably trough VPN. But a terminal server solution, that are fast and easy to manage would be perfect for our needs. So if anyone have any experience with a similar setup, please let me know what you did, and your experiences with your setup.

  What should happen is that [email protected] should be delivered to that users inbox on localhost, user@localhost. Thunderbird works fine at reading user@localhost. I'm just using a small portion of postfix-dovecot with Ubuntu mailman. • How to Manage Your Movies in Boxee

  Boxee is a free cross platform HTPC application that plays media locally and via the Internet. Today we’ll take a look at how to manage your local movie collection in Boxee. Note: We are using the most recent version of Boxee running on Windows 7. Your experience on an earlier version or a Mac or Linux build may vary slightly. If you are using an earlier version of Boxee, we recommend you update to the current version (0.9.21.11487). The latest update features significant improvements in file and media identification. Naming your Movie Files Proper file naming is important for Boxee to correctly identify your movie files. Before you get started you may want to take some time to name your files properly. Boxee supports the following naming conventions: Lawrence of Arabia.avi Lawrence.of.Arabia.avi Lawrence of Arabia (1962).avi Lawrence.of.Arabia(1962).avi For multi-part movies, you can use .part or .cd to identify first and second parts of the movie. Gettysburg.part1.avi Gettysburg.part2.avi If you are unsure of the correct title of the movie, check with IMDB.com. Supported File Types Boxee supports the following video file types and codecs: AVI, MPEG, WMV, ASF, FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4, M4A, AAC, NUT, Ogg, OGM, RealMedia RAM/RM/RV/RA/RMVB, 3gp, VIVO, PVA, NUV, NSV, NSA, FLI, FLC, and DVR-MS (beta support) CDs, DVDs, VCD/SVCD MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (SP and ASP, including DivX, XviD, 3ivx, DV, H.263), MPEG-4 AVC (aka H.264), HuffYUV, Indeo, MJPEG, RealVideo, QuickTime, Sorenson, WMV, Cinepak Adding Movie Files to Boxee Boxee will automatically scan your default media folders and add any movie files to My Movies. Boxee will attempt to identify the media and check sources on the web to get data like cover art and other metadata. You can add as many sources to Boxee as you like from your local hard drive, external hard drives or from your network. You will need to make sure you have access to shared folders on the networked computer hosting the media you want to share. You can browse for other folders to scan by selecting Scan Media Folders.   You can also add media files by selecting Settings from the Home screen… Then select Media… and then selecting Add Sources. Browse for your directory and select Add source. Next, you’ll need to select the media type and the type of scanning. You can also change the share name if you’d like. When finished, select Add. You should see a quick notification at the top of the screen that the source was added.   Select Scan source to have Boxee to begin scanning your media files and attempt to properly identify them. Your movies may not show up instantly in My Movies. It will take Boxee some time to fully scan your sources, especially if you have a large collection. Eventually you should see My Movies begin to populate with cover art and metadata.   You can see the progress and find unidentified files by clicking on the yellow arrow to the left, or navigating to the left with your keyboard or remote and selecting Manage Sources.   Here you can see how many files (if any) Boxee failed to identify. To see which titles are unresolved, select Unidentified Files.   Here you’ll find your unresolved files. Select one of the unidentified files to search for the proper movie information. Next, select the Indentify Video icon. Boxee will fill in the title of the file or you edit the title yourself in the text box. Click Search. The results of your search will be displayed. Scroll through and select the title that fits your movie. Check the details of the film to make sure you have the correct title and select Done.   Fixing Incorrectly Indentified Files If you find a movie has been incorrectly identified you can correct it manually. Select the movie. Then search for the correct movie title from the list and select it. When you’re sure you found the correct movie, click Done. Filtering your Movies You can filter your movie collection by genre, or by whether it has been marked as watched or unwatched. When you’ve finished watching a movie, Boxee will mark it as watched.   You can also manually mark a title as watched.   Boxee also features a wide variety of genres by which you can filter the titles in your library. Playing your Movie When you’re ready to start watching a movie, simply select your title.   From here, you can select the “i” icon to read more information about the movie, add it to your queue, or add a shortcut. Click Local File to begin playing.   Now you’re ready to enjoy your movie. If you don’t have a large movie collection or just need more selection, you may want to check out the Netflix App for Boxee. Install the Ajax Control Toolkit from NuGet: Nice post by Stephen Walther on how you can now use NuGet to install the Ajax Control Toolkit within your applications.  This makes it much easier to reference and use. SassAndCoffee 0.9 Released: Paul Betts blogs about the latest release of his SassAndCoffee extension (available via NuGet). Precompile your MVC Razor Views: Great post from David Ebbo that discusses a new Razor Generator tool that enables you to pre-compile your razor view templates as assemblies – which enables a bunch of cool scenarios. Unit Testing Razor Views: Nice post from David Ebbo that shows how to use his new Razor Generator to enable unit testing of razor view templates with ASP.NET MVC. Bin Deploying ASP.NET MVC 3: Nice post by Phil Haack that covers a cool feature added to VS 2010 SP1 that makes it really easy to \bin deploy ASP.NET MVC and Razor within your application. This enables you to easily deploy the app to servers that don’t have ASP.NET MVC 3 installed. .NET Table Splitting with EF 4.1 Code First: Great post from Morteza Manavi that discusses how to split up a single database table across multiple EF entity classes.  This shows off some of the power behind EF 4.1 and is very useful when working with legacy database schemas. Choosing the Right Collection Class: Nice post from James Michael Hare that talks about the different collection class options available within .NET.  A nice overview for people who haven’t looked at all of the support now built into the framework. Little Wonders: Empty(), DefaultIfEmpty() and Count() helper methods: Another in James Michael Hare’s excellent series on .NET/C# “Little Wonders”.  This post covers some of the great helper methods now built-into .NET that make coding even easier. NuGet NuGet 1.4 Released: Learn all about the latest release of NuGet – which includes a bunch of cool new capabilities.  It takes only seconds to update to it – go for it! • Add New Features to WMP with Windows Media Player Plus

  Do you use Windows Media Player 11 or 12 as your default media player? Today, we’re going to show you how to add some handy new features and enhancements with the Windows Media Player Plus third party plug-in. Installation and Setup Download and install Media Player Plus! (link below). You’ll need to close out of Windows Media Player before you begin or you’ll receive the message below. The next time you open Media Player you’ll be presented with the Media Player Plus settings window. Some of the settings will be enabled by default, such as the Find as you type feature. Using Media Player Plus! Find as you type allows you to start typing a search term from anywhere in Media Player without having to be in the Search box. The search term will automatically fill in the search box and display the results.   You’ll also see Disable group headers in the Library Pane.   This setting will display library items in a continuous list similar to the functionality of Windows Media Player 10. Under User Interface you can enable displaying the currently playing artist and title in the title bar. This is enabled by default.   The Context Menu page allows you to enable context menu enhancements. The File menu enhancement allows you to add the Windows Context menu to Media Player on the library pane, list pane, or both. Right click on a Title, select File, and you’ll see the Windows Context Menu. Right-click on a title and select Tag Editor Plus. Tag Editor Plus allows you to quickly edit media tags.   The Advanced tab displays a number of tags that Media Player usually doesn’t show. Only the tags with the notepad and pencil icon are editable.   The Restore Plug-ins page allows you to configure which plug-ins should be automatically restored after a Media Player crash. The Restore Media at Startup page allows you to configure Media Player to resume playing the last playlist, track, and even whether it was playing or paused at the time the application was closed. So, if you close out in the middle of a song, it will begin playing from that point the next time you open Media Player. You can also set Media Player to rewind a certain number of seconds from where you left off. This is especially useful if you are in the middle of watching a movie. There’s also the option to have your currently playing song sent to Windows Live Messenger. You can access the settings at any time by going to Tools, Plug-in properties, and selecting Windows Media Player Plus. Windows Media Plus is a nice little free plug-in for WMP 11 and 12 that brings a lot of additional functionality to Windows Media Player. If you use Media Player 11 or WMP 12 in Windows 7 as your main player, you might want to give this a try. Download Windows Media Player Plus! • 5 Steps to getting started with IronRuby

  IronRuby is a Open Source implementation of the Ruby programming language for .NET, heavily relying on Microsoft's Dynamic Language Runtime. The project's #1 goal is to be a true Ruby implementation, meaning it runs existing Ruby code. Check out this summary of using the Ruby standard library and 3rd party libraries in IronRuby. IronRuby has tight integration with .NET, so any .NET types can be used from IronRuby and the IronRuby runtime can be embedded into any .NET application. These 5 steps should get you nicely up and running on IronRuby – OR … you could just watch a video session from the lead developer which took place earlier this month (March 2010 - 60mins). But the 5 steps will be quicker :-) Step 1 – Install IronRuby :-) You can install IronRuby automatically using an MSI or manually. For simplicity I would recommend the MSI install. TIP: As of the 25th of March IronRuby has not quite shipped. The download above is a Release Candidate (RC) which means it is still undergoing final testing by the team. You will need to uninstall this version (RC3) once the final release is available. The good news is that uninstalling IronRuby RC3 will work without a hitch as the MSI does relatively little. Step 2 – Install an IronRuby friendly editor You will need to Install an editor to work with IronRuby as there is no designer support for IronRuby inside Visual Studio. There are many editors to choose from but I would recommend you either went with: SciTE (Download the MSI): This is a lightweight text editor which is simple to get up and running. SciTE understands Ruby syntax and allows you to easily run IronRuby code within the editor with a small change to the config file. SharpDevelop 3.2 (Download the MSI): This is an open source development environment for C#, VB, Boo and now IronRuby. IronRuby support is new but it does include integrated debugging. You might also want to check out the main site for SharpDevelop. TIP: There are commercial tools for Ruby development which offer richer support such as intellisense.. They can be coerced into working with IronRuby. A good one to start with is RubyMine which needs some small changes to make it work with IronRuby. Step 3 – Run the IronRuby Tutorial Run through the IronRuby tutorial which is included in the IronRuby download. It covers off the basics of the Ruby languages and how IronRuby integrates with .NET. In a typical install it will end up at C:\Program Files\IronRuby 0.9.4.0\Samples\Tutorial. Which will give you the tutorial implemented in .NET and Ruby. TIP: You might also want to check out these two introductory posts Using IronRuby and .NET to produce the ‘Hello World of WPF’ and What's IronRuby, and how do I put it on Rails? Step 4 – Get some good books to read Get a great book on Ruby and IronRuby. There are several free ebooks on Ruby which will help you learn the language. The little book of Ruby is a good place to start. I would also recommend you purchase IronRuby Unleashed (Buy on Amazon UK | Buy on Amazon USA). You might also want to check out this mini-review.
