  • Autounmounting USB keys with FAT filesystem on Linux (RHEL5)

    - by niXar
For security reasons, I have two workstations i front of me, and I can only transfer data between them through a USB key. As you can imagine, it can get quickly tiresome, but the most annoying is having to unmount the things before removing them. Not umounting them results in missing files most of the time, even if I remove them a while after having last written to them. Now, since they're only used for transferring smallish files, and each are basically written once and read once, I don't need the fancy pansy caching infrastructure that makes clean unmounting a necessary step. And since the data is always a copy of something I have at hand, I don't care if the filesystem croaks from time to time. But anyway the system doesn't need to force that on me, it could simply make sure everything is committed with a second, and works synchronously. Then when I remove the key, nothing is lost. Is there a way to do this? I would appreciate any other tips on handling this situation. Edit: it appears the situation has changed between RHEL5 and Fedora up to F11 on one hand, and F12 on the other. The latter use DeviceKit-disk, and I haven't quite figured out how to do this. The method provided below in gconf does not work anymore.

  • How to access USB stick content from VMWare running Ubuntu 10.10?

    - by JVerstry
Hi, I am running Ubuntu 10.10 via VMWare under Windows 7. I have followed the procedure to install the USB stick. It is now connected to the host. However, I don't know how to access the content of the stick. My Google research indicates that this may be a mounting issue. I read somewhere that I should check /proc/bus/usb, but the usb directory does not exist in /proc/bus. Unfortunately, I am not a Linux expert at this. The ultimate issue I am trying to solve is the one describe here. I am trying to use vi to create ~/.vmware/config, but it is virtually impossible to use vi, since I don't have access to the arrow keys (chicken & egg problem). I have created the config file on my usb stick and want to copy it where it should be. Thanks!

  • How useful is mounting /tmp noexec?

    - by Novelocrat
Many people (including the Securing Debian Manual) recommend mounting /tmp with the noexec, nodev, nosuid set of options. This is generally presented as one element of a 'defense-in-depth' strategy, by preventing the escalation of an attack that lets someone write a file, or an attack by a user with a legitimate account but no other writable space. Over time, however, I've encountered arguments (most prominently by Debian/Ubuntu Developer Colin Watson) that noexec is a useless measure, for a couple potential reasons: The user can run /lib/ld-linux.so <binary> in an attempt to get the same effect. The user can still run system-provided interpreters on scripts that can't be run directly Given these arguments, the potential need for more configuration (e.g. debconf likes an executable temporary directory), and the potential loss of convenience, is this a worthwhile security measure? What other holes do you know of that enable circumvention?

  • libvirt upgrade caused vms to not see drives (boot media not found)

    - by bias
I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04.1 and now libvirt (via open nebula) successfully runs vms but they aren't finding the 2 drives (specifically, the boot drive). One is "hd" the other is "cdrom". The machine boots but fails and displays something like "boot media not found hd" (this was in a vnc terminal and I didn't copy the output anywhere so that's not the verbatim message). I tried constructing a new disk using the new version of qemu (via vmbuilder) and this new machine has the same problem as the old machine. In case it matters (I can't see why it would) I'm using open nebula to manage the machines. There's nothing relevant in any of the logs: syslog, libvirtd, oned. Which is to say nothing interesting/anomalous is reported when the machine is brought up. • Map ftp servers as network drives in Ubuntu Linux

    - by Carl
Hi everybody! I'm a new Linux user, just switched over from Windows. I've got a couple FTP servers I connect to on a regular basis through sftp. I was wondering if there was a way to, as we say in windows, map them as network drives in Linux, so I can just copy stuff into a drive or folder and it will just map it to the server by ftp. That would be pretty cool. Anybody know how this would be possible, and how to do it? I Can't see to find anything in the literature. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. Thanks!

  • How is network mounted software executed?

    - by CptSupermrkt
I would like to understand how network mounted software works. For example, at my place of work, we have a software server. Each client machine (hundreds of them) automatically mounts directories from the software server on boot. For example, a program like Matlab is installed just once on the software server, but each client machine can start up an instance of Matlab. What is going on under the hood? Let's say I run /opt/bin/matlab and /opt/ is mounted from the software server, what happens when I press Enter to execute matlab on a client machine? The process is on the client machine, and I've already narrowed down that there isn't any implicit or hidden file transfer (i.e. copying matlab to my machine temporarily for that session) by running matlab on a computer with nearly zero disk space (i.e. not enough room to transfer). Since Matlab was installed on the server, how is my client computer executing it? What mechanism is controlling this? What is happening behind the scenes?

  • Not able to safely remove external disk after having mounted and unmounted a VHD on it

    - by Agnel Kurian
I am using Windows 7 SP 1. I have an external hard disk (Seagate 500GB) which I am able to use without problems most of the time. I am able to plug it in, use it and then safely unmount it via the "Eject USB Mass Storage Device" option in the taskbar tray. However, if I attach a VHD file located on this disk using "Disk Management", then detach the VHD and finally try to safely disconnect the disk via the system tray, I get an error which says: "Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device: Windows can't stop your 'Generic volume' device because a program is still using it. Close any programs that might be using the device, and then try again later." How do I avoid this problem? Which process could still be accessing the device (even after I have closed the "Disk Management" application) ?

  • glusterfs mounts get unmounted when 1 of the 2 bricks goes offline

    - by Shiquemano
I have an odd case where 1 of the 2 replicated glusterfs bricks will go offline and take all of the client mounts down with it. As I understand it, this should not be happening. It should fail over to the brick that is still online, but this hasn't been the case. I suspect that this is due to configuration issue. Here is a description of the system: 2 gluster servers on dedicated hardware (gfs0, gfs1) 8 client servers on vms (client1, client2, client3, ... , client8) Half of the client servers are mounted with gfs0 as the primary, and the other half are pointed at gfs1. Each of the clients are mounted with the following entry in /etc/fstab: /etc/glusterfs/datavol.vol /data glusterfs defaults 0 0 Here is the content of /etc/glusterfs/datavol.vol: volume datavol-client-0 type protocol/client option transport-type tcp option remote-subvolume /data/datavol option remote-host gfs0 end-volume volume datavol-client-1 type protocol/client option transport-type tcp option remote-subvolume /data/datavol option remote-host gfs1 end-volume volume datavol-replicate-0 type cluster/replicate subvolumes datavol-client-0 datavol-client-1 end-volume volume datavol-dht type cluster/distribute subvolumes datavol-replicate-0 end-volume volume datavol-write-behind type performance/write-behind subvolumes datavol-dht end-volume volume datavol-read-ahead type performance/read-ahead subvolumes datavol-write-behind end-volume volume datavol-io-cache type performance/io-cache subvolumes datavol-read-ahead end-volume volume datavol-quick-read type performance/quick-read subvolumes datavol-io-cache end-volume volume datavol-md-cache type performance/md-cache subvolumes datavol-quick-read end-volume volume datavol type debug/io-stats option count-fop-hits on option latency-measurement on subvolumes datavol-md-cache end-volume The config above is the latest attempt at making this behave properly. I have also tried the following entry in /etc/fstab: gfs0:/datavol /data glusterfs defaults,backupvolfile-server=gfs1 0 0 This was the entry for half of the clients, while the other half had: gfs1:/datavol /data glusterfs defaults,backupvolfile-server=gfs0 0 0 The results were exactly the same as the above configuration. Both configs connect everything just fine, they just don't fail over. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Connecting a Wifi router to receivers with a cable instead of antenna?

    - by 31eee384
This is a very strange question--I'd go so far as to say it's a stupid question. I'm being told that it is possible to, to describe it briefly, use a cable to connect an access point and a receiver directly to one another. This means that I would unscrew the access point's antenna, and attach one end of a cable to the port. Then, on the wireless receiver, I would also unscrew the antenna and plug in the other side of the cable. I'm being told the connection would work after this, just as a normal Wifi connection would. Bonus mini-question: if this works, would it still work if a splitter were attached to the access point and multiple receivers plugged in to the network? What would happen if I do this? Based on my surprisingly deficient knowledge of radio transmission, I don't think it would work. I would like some help knowing why it won't (or will) though, if possible. This is a somewhat hypothetical question--I realize that Ethernet does this exact job very handily, and I could just throw in a switch instead of the splitter. I simply feel that I should understand this scenario. Thanks for any help you can offer.

  • Forgot to unmount/eject external hard drive, lost moved files. Mac OS X

    - by balupton
So I was using my Mac with my external hard drive connected via USB. I moved about 10 GB of data to it (via drag and drop while holding down the Command key to move the files rather than to copy them). They moved to the drive all right, but as I was having some issues and the Finder crashed after the transfer, I was unable to eject the volume and later everything froze so I had to do a hard restart (hold the power button). When I remounted the volume (plugged the external hard drive back in) it no longer had any of the files which I moved onto it. As it was a lot of data, how can I recover these files?

  • Move /var directories to to /mnt on an EC2 instance

    - by Geoff Lanotte
I am trying to work on a standard configuration for a set of EC2 instances running ubuntu 12.04. These servers are going to be primarily web servers for a Ruby on Rails application. When you configure a new large instance, you are given a primary of 8GB and then ephemeral storage of 400 GB that is mounted to /mnt. It seems logical to me to move some directories that have a potential for growth off to the /mnt directory, I was specifically thinking of /var/www and /var/log. My question is two-fold: Is this a good idea or are there pitfalls that I cannot see? If this is a good idea, how should I go about configuring this. I do have the ability to configure new instances and down our old instances. My concern is over long term, doing this in such a way that it prevents downtime. I am a developer with some experience in devops, but mounting drives is something I have not faced before, so explicit directions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mysterious "media" volume mounted on desktop Mac OS X

    - by Allen
I have a mysterious volume mounted on my desktop that I can't seem to forcibly unmount. I've tried using umount and also diskutil, but it seems to automatically remount itself. I've copied my hdd with Time Machine, and copied it onto a new computer, and it also has the drive mounted on it. It's not pointing to anything and I can't open it, nor can I forcibily remove it by hand with rm -Rf. Any ideas? I noticed this problem after I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion. It causes problems because when I try to select a file using the built in Finder dialog box, it freezes for a few minutes because it tries to cache or read into the "media" mounted volume.

  • Turn off write barriers on ext4 whiche FS is mounted

    - by user462982
I am doing some IO intensive DB imports that run for several days now and the IO performance has dropped tremendously over times. The DB data files (log files) are on an ext4 formatted logical volume which is mounted with default options (did not specify something special in fstab). Since I just learned that ext4 enables write barriers by default: Q: Is there some way to disable write barriers online (i.e. while the file system is in use), because I cannot interrupt the import and don't want to restart it again. I am aware that write barriers might not be the only thing impeding performance it is a bad idea to have write barriers disabled on journalling file systems if data safty is important (e.g. on a production system)

  • How can I launch a local application remotely?

    - by yungsters
I use TextMate on Mac OS X to develop. The files I need to edit are on a Linux machine, and I have the Linux filesystem mounted on my Mac OS X. Opening the files and saving them in TextMate is not a problem. What I want to do (from my Mac OS X) is be able to... SSH <linux> cd <folder> mate <filename> I want that to open up the file in TextMate on my Mac OS X (thus, shifting focus from my Terminal.app to TextMate.app). How can I achieve this effect?

  • Dual Boot issues with Windows 7 and Ubuntu

    - by Michael
I'm finding myself in a rather unique situation. I've read through just about every resource I can find about this and while things have helped me understand some background, I haven't yet been able to find a solution. So I'm asking here. I originally had just a Windows 7 64-bit OS installation on my desktop. Learning that I couldn't do anything with Apache, PHP and MySql from within a 64-bit system, I did some research and found out that I could use Ubuntu. I've installed the latest version: 11.04. I created a CD to install Ubuntu from and the install went just fine. I installed it side-by-side with Windows 7. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine through the dual-boot option. When I reboot to load Windows though, the Grub2 list shows Windows 7 (loader) and when I select this option the Windows System Recovery loads instead of the actual OS. I haven't made it past there because I didn't know what to do. I just shut the computer down and rebooted into Ubuntu. I've been working for the last hour and a half to try to figure out how to boot into the Windows 7 OS and I haven't got a clue. While I'm somewhat proficient with Windows 7, I'm totally new to Ubuntu, so if you do know what needs to happen, please keep it simple enough that I'll be able to understand. Thanks for all your help in advance. Here's the results after using the Boot Info Script: Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 ============================= Boot Info Summary: ============================== => Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #5 for cbh. => Windows is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb => Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/mapper/pdc_bdadcfbdif and looks on the same drive in partition #5 for cbh. sda1: _________________________________________________________________________ File system: ntfs Boot sector type: Windows Vista/7 Boot sector info: No errors found in the Boot Parameter Block. • random, Graphics point ,searching- algorithm, via dual for loop set

    - by LoneXcoder
hello and thanks for joining me in my journey to the custom made algorithm for "guess where the pixel is" this for Loop set (over Point.X, Point.Y), is formed in consecutive/linear form: //Original\initial Location Point initPoint = new Point(150, 100); // No' of pixels to search left off X , and above Y int preXsrchDepth, preYsrchDepth; // No' of pixels to search to the right of X, And Above Y int postXsrchDepth, postYsrchDepth; preXsrchDepth = 10; // will start search at 10 pixels to the left from original X preYsrchDepth = 10; // will start search at 10 pixels above the original Y postXsrchDepth = 10; // will stop search at 10 pixels to the right from X postYsrchDepth = 10; // will stop search at 10 pixels below Y int StopXsearch = initPoint.X + postXsrchDepth; //stops X Loop itarations at initial pointX + depth requested to serch right of it int StopYsearch = initPoint.Y + postYsrchDepth; //stops Y Loop itarations at initial pointY + depth requested below original location int CountDownX, CountDownY; // Optional not requierd for loop but will reports the count down how many iterations left (unless break; triggerd ..uppon success) Point SearchFromPoint = Point.Empty; //the point will be used for (int StartX = initPoint.X - preXsrchDepth; StartX < StopXsearch; StartX++) { SearchFromPoint.X = StartX; for (int StartY = initPoint.Y - preYsrchDepth; StartY < StpY; StartY++) { CountDownX = (initPoint.X - StartX); CountDownY=(initPoint.Y - StartY); SearchFromPoint.Y = StartY; if (SearchSuccess) { same = true; AAdToAppLog("Search Report For: " + imgName + "Search Completed Successfully On Try " + CountDownX + ":" + CountDownY); break; } } } <-10 ---- -5--- -1 X +1--- +5---- +10 what i would like to do is try a way of instead is have a little more clever approach <+8---+5-- -8 -5 -- +2 +10 X -2 - -10 -8-- -6 ---1- -3 | +8 | -10 Y +1 -6 | | +9 .... I do know there's a wheel already invented in this field (even a full-trailer truck amount of wheels (: ) but as a new programmer, I really wanted to start of with a simple way and also related to my field of interest in my project. can anybody show an idea of his, he learnt along the way to Professionalism in algorithm /programming having tests to do on few approaches (kind'a random cleverness...) will absolutely make the day and perhaps help some others viewing this page in the future to come it will be much easier for me to understand if you could use as much as possible similar naming to variables i used or implenet your code example ...it will be Greatly appreciated if used with my code sample, unless my metod is a realy flavorless. p.s i think that(atleast as human being) the tricky part is when throwing inconsecutive numbers you loose track of what you didn't yet use, how do u take care of this too . thanks allot in advance looking forward to your participation !

  • Kernel upgrade CentOS 5.3 mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'

    - by matt
We have a CentOS 5.3 x64 server that by default runs kernel version 2.6.18-164.11.1 and we are attempting to upgrade the box to 2.6.31.12 The drive is LVM +ext3, and the problem I'm having is when I upgrade the kernel and attempt to boot from it, no matter what version of the kernel I use, I get /dev/root not found towards the end of the boot process, and the kernel panics, and than reboots. I'm installing the kernel exactly as it says in this doc. I've tried it "The centOS way " using make rpm and than installing that. I've updated my mkinitrd. The most interesting part of this problem is that it has been so frustrating that I decided to try and clean install centos on an identical machine without LVM, and the result is EXACTLY the same. After upgrading the kernel, I get /dev/root not found. Does anyone know how to fix this, or what information would be relevant to remedy it? I'm open to try anything at this point. One more interesting thing about this problem is that in the new version of the kernel, during boot it complains that dm-mapper is started twice, than panics right after that. I've tried this with other kernel versions, and the result is the same. What am I missing here? If you need any more files, please just ask. • CNAME point subdomain to another domain

    - by mac
I know this has been asked before in various forms, but I've tried all the suggestions and had no luck (or maybe skills). I am trying to point a subdomain (mail.cloversalon.com) to Rackspace's hosted Webmail service for a client. My understanding is I should be able to set up cname for the subdomain and point it to rackspace's hostname: apps.rackspace.com I have set up the following cnames: www.mail IN CNAME apps.rackspace.com autodiscover IN CNAME autodiscover.emailsrvr.com mail IN CNAME apps.rackspace.com I have tried doing dig mail.cloversalon.com and nslookup but both report that mail.cloversalon.com is a nonexistent domain. I have restarted the name server numerous times. I'm sure I must be missing something silly. Thanks for any help! Cheers
