  • Performance of Managed C++ Vs UnManaged/native C++

    - by bsobaid
    I am writing a very high performance application that handles and processes hundreds of events every millisecond. Is Unmanaged C++ faster than managed c++? and why? Managed C++ deals with CLR instead of OS and CLR takes care of memory management, which simplifies the code and is probably also more efficient than code written by "a programmer" in unmanaged C++? or there is some other reason? When using managed, how can one then avoid dynamic memory allocation, which causes a performance hit, if it is all transparent to the programmer and handled by CLR? So coming back to my question, Is managed C++ more efficient in terms of speed than unmanaged C++ and why?

  • What do you read?

    - by sixtyfootersdude
    I have almost finished reading all the articles on Joel on software. I am a new developer and hoping to get something interesting to read. Here is what is currently on my list: Java Concurrency in Practice by Brian Goetz sed & awk by Dougherty & Robbins (O'Reilly) The Pragmatic Programmer by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas Head First Design Patterns Can anyone suggest anything else? Would especially like something similar to Joel. Something that is a bit edgy but informative. Pragmatic programmer has some key concepts but is a bit dry.

  • How to feed an xml database with tags obtained thru html forms ?

    - by blaise1
    Hello! Not a programmer, I begin with xml, html forms and xslt on Mac. I plan to use a form to post short texts in a xhtml page and invite end users to add some annotations to the said text. The users would select a specific part of the text posted and each annotation would stand for one specific chain of characters. My goal is to consolidate the tags obtained from various user's annotations to one xml "knowledge base" containing the original text with all the revision indicators. Then I plan to use xslt sheets to product various reports based on the tags obtained. my two questions are : 1- am I dreaming ? Is it really possible to do that with xml, xforms, xslt without using java, php, ajax or other seasoned programmer's tools ? 2- What should be my focus for further explorations aiming in that direction ? Which schema, events, sequences should I study ? Je vous remercie à l'avance, Please excuse my English. Blaise

    I am having trouble accessing the values in an array, the array looks like this, Array ( [0] => Array ( [id] => 1661 [code] => 849651318 [job_status] => 4 [looking_for] => Lorem ipsum [keywords_education] => Derby University [sector_id_csv] => 10,21,9,22,26 [last_job_title_1] => Programmer [last_job_employer_1] => HBOS [city] => Bury [expected_salary_level] => LEVEL_2 [education_level] => COLLEGE [job_looking_for] => [is_contract] => Y [is_permanent] => N [is_temporary] => Y ) ) Array ( [0] => Array ( [id] => 402 [code] => 849650059 [job_status] => 3 [looking_for] => Lorem ipsum [keywords_education] => Paris College [sector_id_csv] => 27,22,19,21,12 [last_job_title_1] => Programmer [last_job_employer_1] => HSBC [city] => Bury [expected_salary_level] => LEVEL_2 [education_level] => COLLEGE [job_looking_for] => [is_contract] => N [is_permanent] => Y [is_temporary] => Y ) ) Array ( [0] => Array ( [id] => 1653 [code] => 849651310 [job_status] => 3 [looking_for] => Lorem ipsum [keywords_education] => Crewe University [sector_id_csv] => 27,15,19,21,24 [last_job_title_1] => Programmer [last_job_employer_1] => ICI [city] => Bury [expected_salary_level] => LEVEL_2 [education_level] => UNIVERSITY [job_looking_for] => [is_contract] => N [is_permanent] => Y [is_temporary] => Y ) ) I am trying to get the values out, I have tried doing the following, foreach ($result as $rslt) { echo $rslt->id; } I have also tried, foreach ($result as $rslt) { $rslt['id']; } But none of this works, I dont know why, can anyone help?

  • php quick form creation

    - by Akshey
    Hi, I have been using php from some time and I have noticed that it takes a long time to create a form with validation using php. Are there any scripts or IDE wizards which can assist a programmer to create php forms quickly and also give the programmer flexibility to customize the form easily? I found some webservices which provide such services but they are mostly oriented towards non-programmers and the forms they generate are not easily customizable and do not support all kinds of functionalities. Infact, most of them are meant for generating contact forms. Regards, Akshey

  • Primary language - QtC++, C#, Java?

    - by Airjoe
    I'm looking for some input, but let me start with a bit of background (for tl;dr skip to end). I'm an IT major with a concentration in networking. While I'm not a CS major nor do I want to program as a vocation, I do consider myself a programmer and do pretty well with the concepts involved. I've been programming since about 6th grade, started out with a proprietary game creation language that made my transition into C++ at college pretty easy. I like to make programs for myself and friends, and have been paid to program for local businesses. A bit about that- I wrote some programs for a couple local businesses in my senior year in high school. I wrote management systems for local shops (inventory, phone/pos orders, timeclock, customer info, and more stuff I can't remember). It definitely turned out to be over my head, as I had never had any formal programming education. It was a great learning experience, but damn was it crappy code. Oh yeah, by the way, it was all vb6. So, I've used vb6 pretty extensively, I've used c++ in my classes (intro to programming up to algorithms), used Java a little bit in another class (had to write a ping client program, pretty easy) and used Java for some simple Project Euler problems to help learn syntax and such when writing the program for the class. I've also used C# a bit for my own simple personal projects (simple programs, one which would just generate an HTTP request on a list of websites and notify if one responded unexpectedly or not at all, and another which just held a list of things to do and periodically reminded me to do them), things I would've written in vb6 a year or two ago. I've just started using Qt C++ for some undergrad research I'm working on. Now I've had some formal education, I [think I] understand organization in programming a lot better (I didn't even use classes in my vb6 programs where I really should have), how it's important to structure code, split into functions where appropriate, document properly, efficiency both in memory and speed, dynamic and modular programming etc. I was looking for some input on which language to pick up as my "primary". As I'm not a "real programmer", it will be mostly hobby projects, but will include some 'real' projects I'm sure. From my perspective: QtC++ and Java are cross platform, which is cool. Java and C# run in a virtual machine, but I'm not sure if that's a big deal (something extra to distribute, possibly a bit slower? I think Qt would require additional distributables too, right?). I don't really know too much more than this, so I appreciate any help, thanks! TL;DR Am an avocational programmer looking for a language, want quick and straight forward development, liked vb6, will be working with database driven GUI apps- should I go with QtC++, Java, C#, or perhaps something else?

  • c++ polymorphism and other function question

    - by aharont
    i have got this code: class father{ public: virtual void f() { cout<<1;} }; class son:public father{ public: void f() {cout<<2;} }; void test (father x){x.f();} int main(){ son s; test(s); } the question says: the output is '1', what is the rule about polymorphism that the programmer forgot and how can i fix it so the output would be '2'? there is another rule that the programmer forgot when he wrote the father class, and he need to add an empty function to avoid problems from other sons of the father class. what is the rule and what is the missing function? another question write the g function so the next code would run with no crashes int x=11; g(x)=22;

  • Linq to SQL inheritance and Table per Class - approach needed for multiple roles

    - by Ash Machine
    I am using L2S and an inheritance model for mapping Persons against certain roles. Guy Burstein's excellent blog post explains how to accomplish this: http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/bursteg/archive/2007/10/01/linq-to-sql-inheritance.aspx However, I have a specific case where a Person has multiple roles. For example 'Jane Doe' is a Contact and a Programmer. In this model, she would need two rows in the People table, one as Contact (PersonType = 1) and one as Programmer (PersonType = 3). If she changes her last name, and that update happens in her role as Contact, I would need to change all instances of 'Jane Doe' to reflect the name change everywhere. What sort of best approach (improved data structure) could be used to change last name within all roles? Finally, I am hoping to avoid overriding each general form update events to include all instances, but that may be the only way. Any suggestions or approaches appreciated.

  • Do most web 'programmers' (not designers) use WYSIWYG editors or hand code their HTML?

    - by John MacIntyre
    When I started programming web pages, it became immediately obvious that the WYSIWYG editors sucked. The HTML output was difficult to maintain, did things in ways you may not have agreed with, completely messed up existing pages if opened, couldn't handle code in the page, and was polluted with dead or irrelevant code like <font ...></font>. At that time, I didn't know a single programmer with more than 6 months experience who didn't hand code their HTML. Even now, most of the developers I know hand code their HTML. But, I also realize this was a decade ago, WYSIWYG editors have improved, and I may be seriously underproductive hand coding my HTML. Do you, as a web programmer, use WYSIWYG editors for your HTML? PS-I'm kind of thinking we can just vote either YES or NO, and put comments below.

  • How to embed a node on homepage in Drupal 6?

    - by Sushi
    How can I embed a node on the front page in Drupal 6. The node basically has the image upload field along with title and description. I want it to some how appear on the homepage alongwith a "views" which shows the uploaded images at the bottom. It's basically just an attempt at creating something like imageshack as an experiment. I am pretty n00b when it comes to drupal so please be more descriptive.

  • ODBC: how to handle Booleans?

    - by mawg
    Disclaimer: I am a n00b. It seems like ODBC does not support a BOOLEAN type? Is this true? If so, what's the standard kludgearound? Edit: I am using ADO with Delphi on Windows to write the data, but PHP 5 to read it back.

  • Two Column Theme, Help, to make both columns seperately Scrollable.

    - by Michael macDonald
    Hey, I am not sure what to do on this one, I'm not a programmer, but trying to learn CSS as this is how the theme I am using was coded in. I've gotten quite far on my own, but this one stumps me Its two column Theme... As far as I have been able to get, I can use the following: #left { width: 235px; padding: 10px; margin-left: 20px; position: fixed; line-height: 15px; If I change the position to Absolute, The whole page scrolls, If I leave it at Fixed, and add lets say, a Twitter feed, or other type of text that takes me past its reading where you would normally scroll, Its just cut off, cannot get to it, hightlight or scroll.. I've also toyed with the idea, of changing the theme to a 3 column theme, but Again, not a programmer, and i'd be really confused. anyhelp would be great... My Website is at 99lessoxygen.tumblr.com, code was found from http://nigredotheme.tumblr.com

  • Where do you find images and graphics designers for your softwares ?

    - by ereOn
    Hi, As a programmer, I'm sure some of you already experienced the same problem: You create a good software (free, open-source, or for friend-only diffusion, whatever) relying on good code and good ideas but since you're a programmer and not an image designer, your program looks just bad. While it seems pretty easy to find motivated developpers to join for free an open-source project, it seems quite hard to find a single free graphic designer. What free and good resources do you usually use for your programs/websites ? Do you have any cool tip that you're willing to share ? Do you know any place where to find people involved into graphic design willing to participate to open-source projects ?

  • The way to deploy from repos in svn

    - by fatnjazzy
    Hi, we are 5 developers working in an svn environment. every programmer can work on small bugs and commit whenever he wants. after the work has done, i want to give them the way to deploy to the production without considering the other programmers and their deployment. for example: while i am committing, other user is committing too but he did not finish to commit. his revisions 1,3 my revisions 2,4 if i will deploy the HEAD(4), ill also deploy his work. and i will deploy 2 and 4 i will include his files as well. how can i free every programmer to deploy his files only? Thanks

  • Did you ever switch from one programming language to another?

    - by Johan Pelgrim
    The stereotypical programmer is very keen on writing software in one particular programming language and is very fanatic about defending their programming language in any way they can, without being realistic about whether their programming language is the best tool for the job. The other kind of programmer can take a step back and switch between languages (or is not very concerned about doing everything in just one language), is a "jack-of-all-trades", and doesn't mind learning a new language as long as it solves their problem in a good fashion. Did you ever switch from one programming language to another? If yes, why? [P.S. Please don't just answer with "I switched from language A to B because company X sucks! I think it will be very useful to understand why people switch between languages, or what's the best tool for a particular kind of job]

  • Using NetBeans for multiple programming languages

    - by mawg
    I am looking for a cross platform RAD IDE with GUI building. NetBeans looks right (or am aI wrong?). However, I may want to code somethings in C++ and some in Python. It looks like both are supported, but I am not sure if I need to install two copies of NetBeans or if one can handle both programming languages. Sorry it's such a st00pid n00b question - can anyone tell me quickly? Thanks

  • Choose Your Own Adventure : BASIC Programming

    - by theraccoonbear
    Hopefully this isn't considered too off-topic, but I guess we'll see. I'd love to find and frame a copy of this book. Years ago, in my pre-teen years, I remember reading a lot of CYOA books, and one in particular stands out in my mind as the book that started me down the path of becoming a programmer. The details are fuzzy, but what I remember was that the story involved a programmer who was held captive somewhere and was trying to escape. IIRC, each section or chapter had a short BASIC program you could could type into your computer to simulate something from the story. The one that stands out most in my mind was a very simplistic animation made with pipes, pluses, and dashes that "looked" like a metal grate that opened (sliding upward). I realize this is pretty scant information to go on, but I suspect that anyone else who read the book would immediately remember it. Maybe not, I guess we'll see. Again, my apologies if this is too far off-topic for S.O.
