  • List of fonts installed by default in versions of Windows?

    I've been seeing more and more websites using fancy antialiased fonts. Every time I hit one, I think to myself "hmm, what web-safe font is that?" - but after looking at the CSS I typically find some font name in quotes, like "Palatino Linotype". Obviously not web-safe, but according to the Wikipedia article, "Palatino Linotype is shipped with Windows 2000 or later, and Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003." So that covers what, 95% of users that might visit your website? And thanks to the power of CSS, the website can fallback to a similar generic font typename such as 'serif' for non-Windows users with a line like this: font: 16px/20px "Palatino Linotype", serif; Awesome! I want to start using fancy fonts! Is there a set of lists out there, of the fonts that are preinstalled by default in Windows 98, 2000, NT, ME, XP, 2003, etc., and maybe for the Mac OSX versions and various Linux distributions as well? It would be a great reference for picking web font faces! (if not, someone should compile it!) I had never before heard of Palatino Linotype and I want to know what other fonts have existed since old Windows versions that I've never known about!

  • Rewriting jQuery to plain old javascript - are the performance gains worth it?

    Since jQuery is an incredibly easy and banal library, I've developed a rather complex project fairly quickly with it. The entire interface is jQuery based, and memory is cleaned regularly to maintain optimum performance. Everything works very well in Firefox, and exceptionally so in Chrome (other browsers are of no concern for me as this is not a commercial or publicly available product). What I'm wondering now is - since pure plain old javascript is really not a complicated language to master, would it be performance enhancing to rewrite the whole thing in plain old JS, and if so, how much of a boost would you expect to get from it? If the answers prove positive enough, I'll go ahead and do it, run a benchmark and report back with the precise findings. Cheers Edit: Thanks guys, valuable insight. The purpose was not to "re-invent the wheel" - it was just for experience and personal improvement. Just because something exists, doesn't mean you shouldn't explore it into greater detail, know how it works or try to recreate it. This is the same reason I seldom use frameworks, I would much rather use my own code and iron it out and gain massive experience doing it, than start off by using someone else's code, regardless of how ironed out it is. Anyway, won't be doing it, thanks for saving me the effort :)

    I would like to remove an old JPanel from the Window (JFrame) and add a new one. How should I do it?     i've a old database where i store the data of the holidays and dates in which they are celebrated.. id country hdate description link 1 Afghanistan 2008-01-19 Ashura ashura 2 Albania 2008-01-01 New Year Day new-year the flaws in the above structure is that, i repeat the data other than date for every festival and every year and every country.. For example, I store a new date for 2009 for ashura and afghanistan .. I tried to limit the redundancy and split the tables as countries (id,name) holidays (id, holiday, celebrated_by, link) // celebrated_by will store the id's of countries separated by ',' holiday_dates (holiday_id, date, year) // date will the full date and year will be as 2008 or 2009 Now i have some problems with the structure too.. consider that i store the holiday like Independence day , its common for more countries but will have different dates. so how to handle this and and the link will have to be different too.. And i need to list the countries which celebrates the same holiday and also when i describe about a single holiday i need to list all the other holidays that country would be celebrating.. And the most of all , i already have huge amount of data in the old tables and i need to split it to the new one once the new design is finalized... Any ideas?

  • Is IE Collection reliable tool for testing with various versions of Internet Explorer?

    On my Windows machine -- I typically test different versions of Internet Explorer using an array of Virtual Machine instances (which obviously requires a fair amount of investment in time and money). In a pinch I have also used IETester -- which at times can be a little unreliable. However, I just discovered IE Collection and was wondering if people have used it -- and can I rely on it for web page testing purposes? Would love to know what you think.

    I have an ASP.NET website where i have implemented page level caching using the OutPutCache directive.This boosted the page performance.My pages has few parts(Some buttons,links and labels) which are specific to the logged in user.If user is not logged in,they will see different links.Now Since i implemented the page level caching,Even after the user logged in,It's showing the old page content(Links and buttons meant for the Non logged in User). Caching is obviously good.But how to get rid of this problem ? Do i need to completely remove caching ?

    Hi there, Is there a specific version of .Net that I can target that is bundled with all versions of Windows of XP SP2 and higher? We are trying to create a simple setup stub without having to resort to a low-level C/C++ app... currently something is cooked up in VB6, but there's a fair amount of low-level network code that I would much rather rewrite in .Net -- which would be trivial if only we could rely on the presence of a given version.

    Hello, I recently generate two versions of Java classes generated by JAXB. So I get two packages : V1_0 and V2_0 I notice that I have only one ObjectFactory generated. The problem is that this ObjectFactory is specific to a version (here it's specific to my version v1_0). So the question is : Could I configure JAXB to allow to make one ObjectFactory for each version ? Thanks a lot.
