• Getting COM object to run in Vista

  We expose an interface to our simulation software using a COM/ActiveX object. This worked just fine in XP, but in Vista, we get "Error 429: ActiveX can't create object" when a VB client executes CreateObject(). The COM object has been registered by hand so that the Vista Registry is identical to XP's Registry. I run the VB interface from a DOS window that I started using "Run As Administrator". The client is correctly accessing and reading the Registry as I walk through using the debugger in VB, so it's apparently not a security setting, as near as I can tell. I have also loaded the files into VS2005 (the object was originally created in VS6) and rebuilt them to get a later ATL version, but that hasn't helped - we still get the 429 error. Is this a symptom of UAC problems, or should I be looking for something deeper?

• Extract a C/C++ header file from a C# class exposed to COM

  I'm not sure I've setup everything I've needed to in my C# class to properly, but it does work in COM. I've been looking for an example of a C# class that was successfully used in a C/C++ project, but haven't come across anything. I've tried using the OLE/COM Object View app to open the .tlb file and save as .h, but it gives some errors: MIDL1009: unknown argument ignored; MIDL1001: cannot open input file Studio "Studio" isn't the name of the file, it's Syslog, so that raises a red flag to me. Any ideas?

• If terminating a hung thread is a good idea, how do I do it safely?

  My Delphi program relies heavily on Outlook automation. Outlook versions prior to 2007-SP2 tend to get stuck in memory due to badly written addins and badly written Outlook code. If Outlook is stuck, calling CreateOleObject('Outlook.Application') or GetActiveObject ... doesn't return and keeps my application hanging till Outlook.exe is closed in the task manager. I've thought of a solution, but I'm unsure whether it's good practice or not. I'd start Outlook with CreateOleObject in a separate thread, wait 10 seconds in my main thread and if Outlook hangs (CreateOleObject doesn't return), offer the user to kill the Outlook.exe process from my program. But since I don't want to force the user to kill the Outlook.exe process, as an alternative I also need a way to kill the new thread in my program which keeps hanging now. Is this good practice? How can I terminate a hanging thread in Delphi without leaking memory?

  Hi, I'm programming for Windows CE and I need to connect to a scanner. There is no problem - I know that it is on port COM0, but if I plug in another device earlier it gets another COM port... to get all com ports the easy way is: SerialPort.GetPortNames() But I don't know how to identify a device? Is there any standard way? I can't 'ping' it since there is one device that only sends data... it spams data all the time... and I don't know how to 'ping' a device...

  I need to start utilizing the interop in my programs to automate several functions in Word and Outlook and I was checking if anyone knew a good place to start. My ultimate goal is for my program to kick off a mail merge, create several different files and save them accordingly, then e-mail the different files to different people based upon who needs what. So any help on learning how to use the interop properly would be greatly appreciated. I am currently using Visual Studio 2008 and Office 2007 and use vb.net to write my programs. • How to Embed Image in Outlook Signature?

  Is it possible to create an HTML email signature for Outlook 2003 or above that doesn't reference external images? That is, using those special "cid" reference but embed the image itself in the signature and not on the file system or network. This is for an web application that generates a "standard" email signature based on various input from a user. It has worked fine so far with a single "embedded" image. But a new feature is going to require the possible addition of multiple tiny images. Getting to user to save one email signature template and one image to the user's machine is about the limit of what I'd like to require of the user. But forcing the user to save multiple images seem to be pushing things a little to far in my opinion. So my problem is trying to embed the images into without having to inconvenience the user with multiple downloads first.

• Trouble Avoiding Microsoft Outlook's Email Warning

  I have a set of records in Microsoft Access that I am trying to send in an Email. The email feature works great. Except a warning message pops up every time a message is ready to send, and the user has to click "Allow" or "Deny" for every email sent. My problem is that when I put my message in the function it always returns false, and the message fails. Any help would be appreciated. • Outlook AppointmentItem Write Event - how many times does it execute

  I need to perform some activity when an appointmentitem (or specifically a meeting) is saved. What I want is once the user has filled in the info and clicks 'send', Outlook does it's stuff and my code executes once. However what I'm finding, is that the Write event occurs multiple times - at least twice, sometimes more (eg in updates). Where this is an issue for me, is that I have an object that needs to be updated before it's serialized, and I don't want to be doing the update and serialization multiple times. Has anyone come across this issue, before and is there a better way to do this to use than appointmentitem.write?

• Outlook 2007 will not send/receive using RPC over HTTP to an exchange server.. works for other users

  I have an incredibly frustrating user issue that I have been unable to resolve for over a week, any ideas for this would be greatly appreciated. The user is having troubles using Outlook 2007 to send or receive emails over using RPC over HTTP (Outlook Anywhere) to an exchange server. Basically what happens, the connection will be establised and the user will be prompted for the username and password, those are submitted and then outlook tries to download emails which fails and the connection to the exchange server will remain unavailable. The machine can ping and everything to the exchange server there is no connection issue there. The setup worked fine for him up untill now and also works for possibly hundreds of other users using the exact same settings, also the same settings will work from the users iphone on the same internet connection, and from my own system using outlook. The exchange server has the webmail https feature and that can be logged into and send and receive emails fine. Steps taken so far: removing the .ost file for the account and allowing office to rebuild it (fixes the issue for a short period of time, then the same symptons occur) deleted exchange profile and recreated (no change in issue) uninstalled all antivirus and firewalls (no change in issue) removed all cached passwords (keymgr.dll) (no change in issue) removed all entries from the hosts file (no change in issue) uninstalled and reinstalled office 2007 (Temporary fix of issue) Installing Symantec Endpoint Client caused a lot of email scan popups to be displayed, after a reboot this stopped and a scan it picked a few trojans that it removed. This fixed the issue temporarily as well, the issue is back again now. I am completely out of ideas now, there seems to be nothing that can be done to fix this issue outside of rebuilding the PC which is a massive pandoras box I don't want to enter with this user. --- Update ---- Malware scans from multiple products have been run on the machine and all updates were installed. The real problem with this user is his distance from us, there is no way to supply a spare laptop or rebuild the machine currently.

• Why doesn't Mail.app properly thread Microsoft Outlook replies?

  I use Mail.app 3.6 (on 10.5 Leopard), and I always use plain-text email. Normally, when I receive an email reply from practically anyone, it looks like this (test message sent from Mail.app, replied from Hotmail, replied from Google Apps): Needless to say, I quite like this threading, and it keeps everything very visually-organized. However, when I receive a plain-text email reply from people on Microsoft Outlook (tested with Outlook 2003 & 2007), it isn't threaded like the image. Instead, it appears as below, without being threaded nicely. My reply to the message. -----Original Message----- From: Tyson Moore [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: [Date] To: [Receiver] Subject: Test Original message. Through looking at the source of my original message, it appears as though every time the message is quoted, less-than signs (<) are inserted before every line in the reply. I am assuming this is what triggers the quoting behaviour exhibited by Mail.app, but I'm no expert. My question: is this a Mail.app limitation in not recognizing the -----Original Message----- line put in by Outlook, or an Outlook problem not inserting > before every line in a reply (or both)?

• Outlook 2007 - repainting (?) problems when copying and pasting between windows: have to switch focus before pasted text is visible

  For some time now I've had a problem when copying and pasting between Outlook 2007 windows, or from other office apps into Outlook 2007. When I paste, say into a new email, the email window's text area goes blank. The window isn't 'not responding', the To and Subject contents are still visible, but it looks like all the text in the email has been deleted. Initially I thought it was just taking ages to paste, but it turns out I need to switch focus to another window and then switch focus back to the Outlook window. Only then does the body of the email repaint itself. It's at the point that I click onto the Outlook window that the body area changes from blank white to showing all the text that was there before plus the pasted text. Any ideas? I've updated my graphics driver. Not sure what else it could be. I do sometimes have similar problems in Visual Studio 2010 too: when I paste text into a code window it doesn't show immediately, but the rest of the window shows what was there before I pasted. I'm using Win XP with all updates applid, on a Dell Vostro 1510.

• How can I diagnose what's causing Outlook 2007 when sending an attachment to fail with error 800CCC0F even though the message was sent?

  As the title suggests, I've got an issue where outlook 2007 is reporting it failed to send email with error 800ccc0f (unexpectedly terminated connection) but only with attachments. The email is actually sent, but outlook keeps retrying (stays in the outbox), generating more emails to the original recipient (which do get delivered) I've got QMail on the server side supporting a half dozen domains. It doesn't appear to matter which account I send from. I can successfully send attachments via alternate mail clients (webmail, thunderbird) while outlook is failing, or send messages without attachments; so it's seemingly not the accounts themselves or serverside, which leaves outlook as the culprit. There doesn't appear to be any pattern to the failures, and it's not consistent (I successfully sent an attachment as recently as 3 weeks ago) so I'm at a loss as to where to look. Qmail logs don't look any different between successes and failures. Has anybody seen this before/have a solution? UPDATE : It appears it's only PDF files that this occurs with, so I'm even more stumped. I can send html/docx/txt and zip, UNLESS the zip file contains a pdf ... whiskey tango foxtrot

• Calling a non-activeX DLL in a VB6 application in Vista/Win7

  I have a VB6 app that utilizes a non-activeX DLL (non-registering). It's declared via the classic Public Declare Function "Function Name" Lib "Library.DLL" syntax. On my dev machine (XP) it works fine but when I deploy to Vista or Win7 I'm constantly greeted with a Run Time Error 48 - File Not Found for the DLL in question. I have tried copying that DLL to every directory I can think of including every environment path on the test machine and the app path too. These are all 32-bit test environments so it's not a SysWow64 issue. Possibly throwing a wrench into the mix is the fact that the application in question is an Outlook COM Addin. I managed to install VB6 on Win7 and was able to run a tiny sample app that utilizes this DLL (outside of the Outlook process) so I know it works PROVIDED the DLL is located in App path. If I call App.Path from my DLL when I run it on the test environment it shows, to no surprise, my installation directory however the DLL is there. I tried turning off UAC. I tried making the App.Path directory permissions open to everyone, still no dice.

• Problems with DNS propagation 10 days after a change was made

  The engineering team I work with has been in the process of moving equipment from one datacenter to another. Ten days ago we moved one of our name servers authoritative for our client's domains (ns1.faithhiway.com) and updated its IP address with its respective DNS provider (register.com) to point to the new datacenter. All tests done show that this name server is correctly running at its new location and when queried, returning the correct response for any domains it is responsible for. The problem is that well after 72 hours had gone by we were still seeing more DNS activity at its old IP address than at the new. The good news is that we kept a name server responding on the old IP address for the time being so we are not seeing any issues with the domains our nameserver is responsible for but the goal is to retire that as soon as possible. As you can see from WhatsMyDNS.net, a decent amount of propagation has occurred over the last 10 days since we made this change, but still there are some locations reporting our original IP. Considering that the TTL is only 3600 with the name servers responsible for this domain, it does not make any sense to myself or the other engineers working with me that we are having this issue. Considering the length of time that has gone by, it seems obvious to me that either we have made a mistake and not thoroughly handled the DNS changes on our end (likely) or there is a problem with either the DNS provider for this domain (Register) or with some of the DNS servers out in the wild (rather unlikely). Any advice on how I can proceed with this? UPDATE (January 31, 2011): First of all, I apologize for the length of both the original question and this update. I contemplated removing some of the excess from the original post but just in case this problem and its solution are helpful to someone else in the future I'm just going to leave everything as it is. Anyway, I've been doing some more research into this problem, and have discovered the following interesting occurrence. While running a check on the glue records for faithhiway.com always resolve correctly, if I go and check a client domain (where ns1.faithhiway.com is authoritative), I get a strange response. It looks like the root servers are returning nsX.faithhiway.com as their old IP addresses still (under Additional Section). Because we have a server still there responding to DNS queries, the trace finishes and returns the correct IP addresses as the final step (again, under Additional Section). • Visual Studio 2010 64-bit COM Interop Issue

  I am trying to add a VC6 COM DLL to our VS2010RC C# solution. The DLL was compiled with the VC6 tools to create an x86 version and was compiled with the VC7 Cross-platform tools to generate a VC7 DLL. The x86 version of the assembly works fine as long as the consuming C# project's platform is set to x86. It doesn't matter whether the x64 or the x86 version of the DLL is actually registered. It works with both. If the platform is set to 'Any CPU' I receive a BadImageFormatException on the load of the Interop.<name>.dll. As for the x64 version, I cannot even get the project to build. I receive the tlbimp error: TlbImp : error TI0000: A single valid machine type compatible with the input type library must be specified. Has anyone seen this issue? EDIT: I've done a lot more digging into this issue and think this may be a Visual Studio bug. I have a clean solution. I bring in my COM assembly with language agnostic 'Any CPU' selected. The process architecture of the resulting Interop DLL is x86 rather than MSIL. May have to make the Interop by hand for now to get this to work. If anyone has another suggestion let me know.

• Setting System.Drawing.Color through .NET COM Interop

  I am trying to use Aspose.Words library through COM Interop. There is one critical problem: I cannot set color. It is supposed to work by assigning to DocumentBuilder.Font.Color, but when I try to do it I get OLE error 0x80131509. Any cast or conversion I trry to do tells me I'm dealing with an empty or null System Object. There doesn't seem to be any sort of syntax to get/set the cookie collection. With COM+ I've seesn soem articles that indcate a switch for Access to ASP Intrinsic Objects -- that seesm to describe my issue, but I'd rather not use COM+. There are also some articles that indicate if I was using ASP.NET I could use HttpContext and HttpRequest/Response, but that's a completely different set of data objects that don't seem to be available with classic ASP. I've been stuck on this fopr a few days. Any help appreciated.
