• Use Outlook 2007 to connect to mail using active sync protocol

  Has anyone tried connected outlook(I am running v2007 on Windows 7) to a mail service using the MS Exchange Active Sync protocol? I know it is intended for mobile devices, but to me it looks like it is becoming the latest 'de facto' mail protocol for email/calendar/contact sync'ing due to the iPhone's support for it. I just think it would be an elegant solution to get my lotus notes mail in outlook(my company uses lotus notes with traveler service installed that exposes mail over the active sync protocol so I can currently read my notes mail via iPhone). This solution would probably eliminate the need for all the hacks needed to connect outlook to 'X' mail (Gmail, notes, etc) So, maybe someone out there has tried this or knows how to do it before spend time on more researching this. Running this with sudo services evrouter start still results in this error, can init.d scripts not tell where my display is? (Not exactly familiar with init, runlevels, etc)

• UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. 8204 bytes As suggested in this very similar question, I have run full scans (+boot time scans) with RegRun and UnHackMe, but they also did not find anything. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft. • How to check DVD integrity at max read speed of DVD writer

  I need to check the integrity of burned DVDs so that I can be sure about my backed-up data. I use DL-DVDs to take the backup. Earlier I used VSO Inspector software for the same but the day I switched to DL-DVDs the VSO Inspector gives me errors upon checking. I think the errors are because the switching of layer writing involves some dummy data somewhere. Secondly, it's damned slow for checking. I believe if there is a utility that can read all files (not the disk surface) and report if some files are unreadable would do the job. But it should be quick! Nobody wants to sit for disk checking for 3-4 hours after a quick 30 min data burn! I am looking for such a utility on Windows or Linux. Even scripts (python, etc) will do. I just want to be assured that the data is safe. Can someone help me in this? Thanks.

  I want a Server 2008R2 (x64) to act as DNLA-Server. I remember I tried this with a Server 2008 about two years ago and this was only possible with some ugly hacks. Is it on Server 2008R2 now possible to enable Windows MediaPlayer Media-Sharing by installing the desktop experience packet? Has someone already experience on this. Or is there another possibility to allow media sharing on a Server 2008R2 "the designated way"? I remember that on Server 2008 the way was to install the old MediaConnect-Pacakge. But I hesitate to install such a component on a server. Anciently I installed VirtualServer with Vista and enabled the media server there in, but this seems to me somewhat overkill for such a simple task.

• VPN Setup: Mac OS X and SonicWall

  I'm trying to get VPN access up and running. The company has a SonicWall firewall/concentrator and I'm working on a Mac. I'm not sure of the SonicWall's hardware or software level. My MacBook Pro is OS X 10.8, x64, fully patched. The Mac Networking applet claims the remote server is not responding. The connection attempt subsequently fails: This is utter bullshit, as a Wireshark trace shows the Protected Mode negotiation, and then the fallback to Quick Mode: I have two questions (1) does Mac OS X VPN work in real life? (2) Are there any trustworthy (non-Apple) tools to test and diagnose the connection problem (Wireshark is a cannon and I have to interpret the results)? And a third question (off topic): what is broken in Cupertino such that so much broken software gets past their QA department? EDIT (12/14/2012): The network guy sent me "VPN Configuration Guide" (Equinox document SonicOS_Standard-6-EN). It seems an IPSec VPN now requires a Firewall Unique Identifier. Just to be sure, I revisited RFC 2409, where Main Mode, Aggressive Mode, and Quick Mode are discussed. I cannot find a reference to Firewall Unique Identifier. I think I am screwed here: I am trying to connect to a broken (non-standard) firewall, with a broken Mac OS X client. Fortunately, I can purchase VPN Tracker Personal (a {SonicWall|Equinox}-authored client) for $129US from Equinox. So much for standards....

• need recommendation for running PHP/Zend based optimizer

  Firstly, I must admit that I don't know much about setting up PHP beyond the basics. I have an Ubuntu 10.04 server system (hosted) running primarily as an FTP store for a commercial store software. The server that the commercial store is installed on is unfortunately not very reliable, and would like to move that to this Ubuntu 10.04 server. (We've already received permission from the store vendor to do this.) My problem is that they use Zend optimizer which is only compatible with PHP 5.2. I have tried a couple of "hacks" to downgrade PHP to 5.2, but it breaks so many other things that it doesn't seem worth it. My idea is to install some sort of container of Ubuntu 8.04 (like OpenVZ) on the server to house a native install of PHP 5.2 to meet the dependency of the store software. However, it appears that OpenVZ is no longer supported on Ubuntu. Is there another solution similar that I could run on a hosted server to installed a separate "container-like" 8.04 system?

• NFS mount mounted inside another NFS mount disappears randomly

  I have quite an odd issue where my nested NFS mounts just disappear randomly from time to time. The fstab entries look somewhat like this: nfs:/home /home/nfs rw,hard,intr,rsize=32768,noatime,nocto,proto=tcp 0 0 nfs:/bigdir /home/bigdir nfs rw,hard,intr,rsize=32768,noatime,nocto,proto=tcp,bg 0 0 The issue is that from time to time the "/home/bigdir" folder will be empty, even though mtab think that the share is still mounted. nfsstat et. al. do also think the share is still mounted. Only thing that works is by unmounting, and then (re)mounting the bigdir share. The server side is a NetApp. The client side is RHEL5.5, 2.6.18-194 kernel (Yes, I know 5.8 is out, but as far as I can see there are no erratas for this particular issue). I can use various hacks like automount, or mounting it to another path and then using --mount bind, but I would like to fix the underlying issue. -- Best regards Espen Fjellvær Olsen

Unfortuantely as far as I am aware Microsoft have not yet come up with a solution to this. I've used a number of hacks to get round this, sepearate accounts with POP3 access, Using the from field in outlook, but each have there draw back. I am also able to ping the SBS2003 server on its private address from any computer on NetB. The Problem Any traffic sent from a computer on NetA to NetB, or from SBS2003 to NetB (excluding ICMP Ping responses), is sent out on the public network interface outside the IPSec tunnel (no encryption or header authentication, as if the tunnel were not there). Pings sent from a computer on NetB to a computer on NetA successfully reach computers on NetA, but the responses are silently discarded by SBS2003 (they do not go out in the clear and do not generate any encrypted traffic). Possible Solutions Incorrect Configuration I could have mistyped something, somewhere, or KB816514 could be incorrect in some way. I have tried very hard to eliminate the first option. Have re-created the configuration several times, tried tweaking and adjusting all the settings I could without success (most prevent the SA from being established). NAT/RRAS I have seen multiple posts elsewhere suggesting that this could be due to interaction between NAT and the IPSec filters. Possibly the NetA private addresses get rewritten to 216.x.x.x before being compared with the Quick Mode IPSec filters and don't get tunneled because of the mismatch. In fact, The Cable Guy article from June 2005 "TCP/IP Packet Processing Paths" suggests that this is the case, (see step 2 and 4 of the Transit Traffic path). If this is the case, is there a way to exclude NetA-NetB traffic from NAT? Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and/or comments are appreciated.

If you try to ssh without a command it greetings you and close the session. I can acquire this by using ForceCommand some-script But getting in some-script i then need to eval user's input. Perhaps any other NoTTY-like option in sshd_config? --- UPDATE --- i'm looking for a pure SSH / Bash solution, not Perl/Python/etc. hacks.

• Enable a program in Windows to run multiple times?

  I've got this legacy software that only allows you to run one copy at a time, it detects that you have another session opened and it won't allow you to open a second instance. The problem is this is a cpu intensive program and it only use a single core. Is there any hacks or tweaks so I can trick it and open more than one instance? This would allow me to retire about 5 servers... I'm using Windows 2008 R2. I had to use cff explorer to enable the use more than 2GB RAM as the program crashes when it tries to use more than 2GB.

• Internet Explorer cannot download rss.php

  Whenever I try to go to an RSS feed in IE7 directly, I get a very strange error. IE 7 tries to download the page, but fails. It throws an error, Internet Explorer cannot download rss.php from www.example.com. Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later. But when I click a link to view the same feed, it doesn't throw an error but displays the XML instead. Are there any ways I caan fix this, that don't involve OS hacks? Also, if I try to put an xsl stylesheet on it, it tries to download the file no matter what and still errors.

  I would like to get console2 to work nicely with UAC Particular problems I would like to tackle: If I start non-elevated, have a way to elevate while running. It'd be especially nice if I could elevate individual tabs I would like to get different coloring for admin/non-admin, similar to: this link. Basically, if I can get the console to execute a command on startup (similar to the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun registry value), that's all I need How do I get this working? Would I have to modify source code to get this to work, or can I use different tab settings/do hacks w/ shell executables? I am using Windows 7, although I would imagine any working solution would also work on Vista.

• Route global shortcuts to pages opened in Firefox

  I like listening to music online on sites like stereomood.com. There is a major problem, however. I can not control the player with my keyboard. And even with a mouse - when I want to play/pause I must activate firefox window, select the tab where music plays and hit play/pause button manually - this is a pain, especially when you play a fullscreen game that can not minimize itself. Thus said, global keyboard shortcuts would be a perfect solution. I understand that different online media players have different controls and each site must be configured individually (like, select button with id 'play' and press it), but I believe that can be done in principle. I also guess that such tricks are impossible without some third-party native app which captures shortcuts and routes them to Firefox window. So, any solutions? Maybe some AutoHotkey hacks or similar.

• Whats the best way to deal with backups for my php/mysql application

  I'm creating php application for my client and now thinking what would be the best way to do backups, automatically if possible? I don't have much experience in this area and in case something goes wrong, or if I need to migrate, I would like to have fast way of getting it all back online. I understand "something goes wrong" is a very wide term, but lets say that someone hacks my site and wipes out database and all the files. My app. is written in php/mysql and I got access to cpanel (hosted with justhost.com if that makes any difference :). I used Joomla and it has JoomlaPack that does complete backup almost automatically and in case site fails, its easy to revert, or migrate if necessary. Is there anything like that for my configuration that would make reverting/migration, easy?

What ways to setup multiple ZFS pools with one partition each (for starters - just want to use deduplication) exist? The setup should work with the NAS, i.e. over network (I'd mount the images via NFS or cifs). My ideas and associated issues so far: sparse files mounted over loop device (specifying sparse file directly as ZFS vdev doesn't work, see Can I choose a sparse file as vdev for a zfs pool?): problem that the name/number of the assigned loop device is anything but constant, not sure how increasing the number loop device with kernel parameter affects performance (there has to be a reason to limit it to 8 in the default value, right?)

  I want a quick and simple way to execute a command whenever a file changes. I want something very simple, something I will leave running on a terminal and close it whenever I'm finished working with that file. Currently, I'm using this: while read; do ./myfile.py ; done And then I need to go to that terminal and press Enter, whenever I save that file on my editor. What I want is something like this: while sleep_until_file_has_changed myfile.py ; do ./myfile.py ; done Or any other solution as easy as that. BTW: I'm using Vim, and I know I can add an autocommand to run something on BufWrite, but this is not the kind of solution I want now. Update: I want something simple, discardable if possible. What's more, I want something to run in a terminal because I want to see the program output (I want to see error messages). About the answers: Thanks for all your answers! All of them are very good, and each one takes a very different approach from the others. Since I need to accept only one, I'm accepting the one that I've actually used (it was simple, quick and easy-to-remember), even though I know it is not the most elegant.

And how could I trace, where it comes from?

• Trouble with Remote Desktop pulling through printers. Drive Redirection works, and the ports created but not the printers

  I've run out of things to look into. All the support documents have been gone through and still provide no resolution. I've checked the service permissions, (sc sdshow spooler) they all match up with other systems and what is output on the support documents. I'm nearly positive that the issue can't be permissions anyway as the software requires all users to be an administrator, so all users are a local administrator. (I haven't looked into why yet but its on the list, I was just recently brought into this team and we've put procedures in place for quick recovery.) We've applied hot fixes relating to RDS and printing, though I'm not sure which ones they were. I've combed through group policy and no where is printer redirection disabled. It's setup with all default values regarding the use and redirection of printers and a quick install of W2k8 R2 shows that it works by default. This dev install was joined to the same domain, placed in the same OU, shows the same policies applied, etc, etc, etc, The server generates all the correct redirected ports but no printers are created. It will also redirect drives without issue, this would seem to rule out the usermode service that handles redirects being broken. No events are logged related to any of the events and there are no events from the TerminalServices-Printer source. There were local printers setup. I didn't think it would mattter but as I was running out of ideas I tried deleting them all with no change. The TS was configured for the software it will be running before we checked out the redirection of printers so the other team responsible to setting up new servers wants to find a fix instead of reloading a new server. I'm not sure where or what else to look for. Any ideas?

• Windows 8 Remote Desktop only allows one user at a time?

  I tried connecting to Windows 8 using its built-in Remote Desktop feature, but for some inexplicable reason, it requires that no users are logged in on the target machine before a remote user can log in. This has never been a problem with rdesktop on Unixen; I could rdesktop from as many machines as I wanted and any logged-in users would never notice a thing. What's the problem with Windows? Any way to allow concurrent local and remote logins to a Windows 8 machine without hacks or cracks? The "guides" on how to do this that show up in the Google results all suggest replacing a system DLL with a hacked one, but that's not acceptable.
