  • Dot Net Code Coverage Test Tools - there is now a choice

    I have been pleasantly surprised this week to discover that there is a choice of tools for measuring Code Coverage. If you have Visual Studio Team edition, then if you are using MSTEST, then you have built-in code coverage, however even then you may need a standalone tool. The tools I have found are (costs are per seat): 1) NCover  http://www.ncover.com/ (from $199 to $658 per seat) I have used it but it is very expensive. 2) PartCover http://sourceforge.net/projects/partcover/ - Free!  Steep initial learning curve to get it to work. 3) Dot Cover from http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/ - Personal licence - normally $99 but at a introductory price of $75 and free for OpenSource Developers (details at http://www.jetbrains.com/dotcover/buy/buy.jsp#opensource_) 4) Test Matrix from http://submain.com/products/testmatrix.aspx - $149 for a licence

  • Looking at desktop virtualization, but some users need 3D support. Is HP Remote Graphics a viable solution?

    My company is looking at desktop virtualization, and are planning to move all of the desktop compute resources into the server room or data center, and provide users with thin clients for access. In most cases, a simple VNC or Remote Desktop solution is adequate, but some users are running visualizations that require 3D capability--something that VNC and Remote Desktop cannot support. Rather than making an exception and providing desktop machines for these users, complicating out rollout and future operations, we are considering adding servers with GPUs, and using HP's Remote Graphics to provide access from the thin client. The demo version appears to work acceptably, but there is a bit of a learning curve, it's not clear how well it would work for multiple simultaneous sessions, and it's not clear if it would be a good solution to apply to non-3D sessions. If possible, as with the hardware, we want to deploy a single software solution instead of a mishmash. If anyone has had experience managing a large installation of HP Remote Graphics, I would appreciate any feedback you can provide.

Everything was OK untill I got a few very good offers regarding an enterprise architect, solutions architect, java architects roles. But each one required different tool set.     Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. At this moment, I don't want to decide on the approach to use, I just want to list down all the options, present to a wider audience and get it finalized.   • SQL Server Data Tools–BI for Visual Studio 2013 Re-released

    Customers used to complain that the tooling for creating BI projects (Analysis Services MD and Tabular, Reporting Services, and Integration services) has been based on earlier versions of Visual Studio than the ones they were using for their other work in Visual Studio (such as C#, VB, and ASP.NET projects). To alleviate that problem, the shipment of those tools has been decoupled from the shipment of the SQL Server product. In SQL Server 2014, the BI tooling isn’t even included in the released version of SQL Server. This allows the team to keep up-to-date with the releases of Visual Studio. A little while back, I was really pleased to see that the Visual Studio 2013 update for SSDT-BI (SQL Server Data Tools for Business Intelligence) had been released.   • Browser support for internal corporate tools

    We are on the verge of a conversion. For years, our company supported only IE for its internal (intranet) home-built tools. Since a few of our users are still on XP, which means IE only goes up to 8... a heavily JS / jQuery site wont even load! We have been in the process of converting to use Chrome instead, to make use of its javascript performance. But, it has now been suggested that we support all common browsers... internally for these tools. Which means more development time to scale-back some of these new applications, more time to test in all browsers, and we are already under staffed. Are there any good informational sites/posts out there, that already make this argument?
