  I am trying to understand why my production environment might be disallowing HTTP RANGE requests. I have a pool of W2K8x64/IIS7 servers behind a pair of Netscaler 9000s. • Cooling a large laptop

  I've had my first laptop early this year and I haven't the slightest idea how to make it cooler. No real problems when I don't use graphics intensive games but when I play games like Dragon Age the temps rise up from 55 to 85. I'm concerned as a friend tells me that HP laptops aren't reputed to last long when it comes to heat. BTW, I've already bought a cooling pad with 3 fans and it didn't do much that elevating it and pointing an electric fan at it didn't do before. Additionally, this is a 17 inch HP dv7-3085dx entertainment notebook that i'm using.

• Apache 2 Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible

  While the title of this question matches an already asked question, in my case I already set Options +FollowSymLinks. The setup is the following: my hosting setup includes htdocs/ directory that is the default document root for HTTP websites and htdocs-secure that is for HTTPS. They are meant for sites that need a different HTTPS version. In case both share the same files I create a link from htdocs-secure to htdocs by ln -s htdocs htdocs-secure but here comes the problem! Log still says Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /path/to/htdocs-secure Vhost fragment Header always set Strict-Transport-Security "max-age=500" DocumentRoot /path/to/htdocs-secure <Directory "/path/to/htdocs-secure"> allow from all Options +FollowSymLinks </Directory> I think it's a correct setup. The HTTP version of the site is accessible, so it doesn't look like a permission problem. How to fix this? [Add] other info: I use MPM-itk and I set AssignUserId to the owner/group of both the directories

• Screen startup apps

  I know that most people don't bother with things like screen anymore, but I happen to really like it, even in this GUI day and age. I still do most of my development from a BASH prompt, so it's extremely useful to me. What I'm wondering is what the easiest way is to start an instance of screen (stored in a shell script or .screenrc or somewhere else) so that it starts up with set commands already running in set windows. For example, I use a django test server, so I'd like one window to come up running "python manage.py runserver" and another blank, waiting for commands. The man page is wholly indecipherable. These old unix utilities can do quite nearly everything, so I'm sure this is possible, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. I

• How to change aging AD password while connected over VPN from Mac

  I am connecting to the office from mac via VPN, Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. I do not know what to do when my AD password on the firm side will age and approach expiration to ensure that my Mac and VPN continue to work afterwards. Is the proper thing to do in this case to connect via VPN and then change the password on Mac via System Preferences, Users & Groups? Will this update the AD on the server side? Will it sync the PointSec as well that is running on the Mac? Or is a better procedure to RDP to a Windows box while connected over VPN and change the password there hoping the Mac will somehow sync up ?? Running Mountain Lion on the Mac.

• Installation of MS SQL Database 2005 on Windows XP Home Sp3 fails with no specific error

  I am trying to install MS SQL Database 2005 on Windows XP Home SP3. It fails giving no reason ("Database failed to install"), then exits. I had already installed MS SQL Database Express Edition 2008 during 2005 setup. But when I removed 2008 one and tried to install 2005 afterwards it still failed with same error. The error happens when I am trying to install Dragon Age Toolset or Visual 2008 Pro edition. I do not known which else informations may be valuable as I never before encountered problems with installing MS database

• Load balancing two web servers with ultra monkey

  Hello, In 2006 a company I was working with setup two load balancers to balance traffic between two web servers. We used ultra monkey to do so. I'm hoping to do the same now. My question: Would anyone recommend using ultra monkey to balance traffic between two linux boxes running apache? Are there other linux-based alternatives which have since proven to be better for this task? Would you still install debian sarge on a load balancer given it's age? Thanks everyone!

  I run thttpd to serve some perl files. But for some reason the daemon is exiting every second or third day. Strangely it's always at 6.25 am. • What are the limitations of virtual machines?

  I'm considering setting up a virtual machine running Windows, with Ubuntu 10.10 as the host OS, for those cases where I have a Windows-only program. I understand that using a VM will lose some performance, but are there other limitations to what the OS in a virtual machine can do compared to "running on bare metal"? For example: Can a VM play games, like Dragon Age Origins or Civilization V? (Possibly with poorer framerates and/or lower resolution, but does it play at all?) Can a VM rip DVD/Blue-ray using AnyDVD or similar Windows program? Can a VM handle new hardware that requires dedicated drivers, but the drivers are only available for the OS running inside the VM? (Ex. graphics card, digital camera, card reader for smart card authentication.) Is it possible to say anything about "general limitations" of VMs, or is this wholly dependent on the specific VM?

  I'm getting tired of living in the modern age and still having a messy filing cabinet full of paper. I have a nice cheap scanner and want to scan receipts, warrenties, and so forth. To make it possible to find these, I'd like to make them searchable via Windows Search (or google desktop search). Because I'm lazy with backups, I want a file format that embeds metadata into the file. Backups should be as simple as coping a bunch of image files around. I'm also cheap, and am not going to install an expensive solution. I'm hoping one of the basic formats can do this. So, what common scannable format satisfies: searchable and and metadata embedded in image generated. The more "open" and portable the better.

  Context: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit edition Microsoft Office 2007 Outlook Steps to Reproduce: Make an event that recurs once a week. Wait a week. See that it pops up OK. Wait a month. Notice that it doesn't say that it is a month overdue. Expected Result: The usual note that the reminder is [x] weeks overdue. Actual Result: Something like "6 days overdue". Possible Excaberating Issue: I have many overdue reminders. For the ones that aren't time critical (and all other things being equal), I work by category and age. For example, I do health-related reminders when I'm doing health stuff; if I have 2 health-related reminders, I do the older one first. Big Question: How is Outlook supposed to handle this sort of overdue recurring reminder? Is there any way to get Outlook to act the way I expect it to?

  On a Windows 2008 R2, using DNS and IIS I've established my development test server; i.e. I'll have a web application that I can browse on http://test.dev I've moved all the static content files like images, js files and css files into another application which is visible on http://cdn.test.dev test.dev, uses cdn.test.dev urls like http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js to load js, css and images. When I first load "~/" of test.dev, all files will load with a response code of 200; when I press F5 in Firefox, all files, except the "~/default.aspx", will load with 304 response code; but pressing Ctrl+F5 loads them again with a 200 code; if I browse another url like "~/pages/" in test.dev, all of those static files will reload with a 200 code... Is this normal or I'm doing something wrong? Actually, I'm looking for a behavior like this: I want the client to load http://cdn.test.dev/js/jquery.js, only once. I want the client's browser to use this jquery.js file, from cache, in all other pages of test.dev Is this possible? • Time Machine (archive) of pre-Leopard systems?

  I want to get off an older Mac OS X system permanently. It is an iBook G3, so that has two important characteristics: Power PC, not Intel based. Runs only Tiger, not Leopard. This means, as far as I can tell: Cannot run Time Machine directly. Here's the approach I have been contemplating: Mount the drive in Firewire mode. Back up the drive as a external drive to the Time Machine volume. Disconnect the drive (permanently). However, I'm concerned that this drive will eventually age out, when the Time Machine volume fills up, and the old-system-as-external-drive is gone. Would it be better to do a single backup with another utility, to shared disk?

• Varnish doesn't seem to be caching

  I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server. • Software/FakeRAID: Windows 8 Disk Mirroring vs Intel Onboard

  So Windows 8 is out and I have a new motherboard. I wish to create a RAID 1 coupling between two HDDs -- for storage purposes only (my OS is on an SSD) -- but I don't know which is the best route to take. My motherboard (Z77 chipset) comes with the age old Intel Fake RAID, but since I only wish to use my RAID for storage, I wondered if I might be better to use Windows 8 Disk Mirroring. Can anyone advise which is better? Or perhaps the pros and cons of each, if that's too contentious? I just can't see the benefit of FakeRAID.   We are overhauling a lab with new machines with Windows 7 (as clients - around 150 of them). In the current infrastructure we have students logging in using a generic student id (as having individual student accounts doesn't really serve any additional purpose). This account, as you would imagine is a locked down one that can run a few (age old) softwares required by students in the class. Currently, the individual machines have XP images created by BartPE. What should be an ideal infrastructure design to cater to such a need with Windows Server 2003 and Windows 7 clients? It would be great if you can give me pointers to what concepts and background I need to have (like GPO), any design guidelines, best practices?

  Over the past few months, my Windows XP machine has slowed down to a crawl. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go from power-up to reaching a responsive state. I have reasons to believe that this is a result of the hard disk slowing down. Questions: Do hard disks slow down as a result of mechanical wear and tear ...or age? How do I check if my disk has slowed down? Conversely, how can I verify that my disk is indeed running at the speed it's designed to run at? Could drivers be at fault here? Do hard disks come with drivers or does Windows use a generic driver?

• Inexpensive degaussers or HDD shredders?

  I do a lot of work for a small cash-strapped business that has a lot of active hard drives, most are consumer-grade SATA of about five years of age, and predictably they are dying at an increasing rate, and a lot of the time they can't even be detected, let alone complete a zero-out cycle. Right now those drives are just being stored, but that can't continue forever. We've got a couple bad LTO tapes it'd be nice to deal with, too. There are very real security and legal issues that make dropping them off with someone who claims they'll be properly destroyed a gamble. I've looked around at degaussers and HDD shredders, and the ones that don't look like they come from some guy in his basement all seem to be $3000+, which is hard to swallow right now. Is there anything out there in the $500-1500 range that you would recommend? (Speed isn't a big issue, if it takes several minutes or even hours per drive, that's completely OK, we've only got 10 or so thus far.)

• Should I use UPS with my laptop to extend the battery life?

  I recently bought a new Vaio laptop which has a 4400 mAh battery. I will use it at home most of the time, and I have an unused uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Should I remove the battery and connect my laptop to UPS? If I do that, how much does it effect the battery's life? I know that batteries stand longer when kept in half-charged in a cool place, but their lifespan decreases in time due to age effect as well. So is it worth to keep the battery out of my laptop, use a UPS instead and mount it when necessary? or should I continue to work with battery mounted?

• Active Directory Profile Slows down machine

  I have a strange issue with an Active Directory profile. When the user logs onto a machine with his profile, the whole machine becomes incredibly slow and unresponsive, with programs hanging and taking an age to load everything. If I log into the same machine with any other profile nothing happens. I took a look at his original profile, any start up programs, login scripts, etc and could not see what could be causing this. The machine is not running out of memory or CPU. Nothing strange is appearing in the event log and I can see nothing running under his profile which may cause this. So I created the user a new profile to test this on and exactly the same thing happens on the first login. The only thing which would of been carried across is the security groups the user is assigned to, yet I have other users with the same groups who do not experience these issues so I am now at a complete loss on where to go next!
