• Best practices to deal with "slightly different" branches of source code

  This question is rather agnostic than related to a certain version control program. Assume there is a source code tree under certain distributed version control. Let's call it A. At some point somebody else clones it and gets its own copy. Let's call it B. I'll call A and B branches, even if some version control tools have different definitions for branches (some might call A and B repositories). Let's assume that branch A is the "main" branch. In the context of distributed version control this only means that branch A is modified much more actively and the owner of branch B periodically syncs (pulls) new updates from branch A. Let's consider that a certain source file in branch B contains a class (again, it's also language agnostic). The owner of branch B considers that some class methods are more appropriate and groups them together by moving them inside the class body. Functionally nothing has changed - this is a very trivial refactoring of the code. But the change gets reflected in diffs. Now, assuming that this change from branch B will never get merged into branch A, the owner of branch B will always get this difference when pulling from branch A and merging into his own workspace. Even if there's only one such trivial change, the owner of branch B needs to resolve conflicts every time when pulling from branch A. As long as branches A and B are modified independently, more and more conflicts like this appear. What is the workaround for this situation? Which workflow should the owner of branch B follow to minimize the effort for periodically syncing with branch A?

• Can't log in to GNOME after upgrade (raring -> saucy)

  I've just upgraded my ubuntu (raring to saucy) and I now can't log in to GNOME. As opposed to virtual consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1, for example). I set it up to log in automatically. But it asks for password now. I type in the password, press Enter, the screen blinks and here I am again at the login screen. • Merging deletes in a Team Foundation Server baseless merge

  I have two TFS branches that do not have a direct parent/child relationship in TFS. In a certain revision, 94 in my example, several items were deleted. I have been tasked with applying those deletes to the main branch. I'd like to do so through a baseless merge. I tried the following command to do so: tf merge /baseless /recursive /version:94 .\programs\program1 ..\Release\programs\program1 Most of the items in the tree were marked as "merge", and some were marked as "merge edit". However, none of the items were deleted at the destination. On a whim i tried to merge over a single delete like so: tf merge /baseless /recursive /version:94 .\programs\program1\source1.cs ..\Release\programs\program1\source1.cs I got the following error message: The item [TFS_PATH] does not exist at the specified version. How do I do this? Is there a way to avoid making all those deletes myself?

• What are your build and release steps? When to increment build numbers?

  I am having trouble defining and automating my build process despite simple requirements: Every build should have a unique build number. Every tagged release should be reproducible What I have: A C++, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x, Subversion development environment. A build machine ( actually a virtual machine ) A version.h file with #defines for major, minor, and buildnumber. A script for incrementing the version.h buildnumber. A rpmbuild spec file that exports the tagged Subversion source, builds, and makes the rpm installer packages. Questions: Assuming multiple developers per project, when should the build number be incremented and version.h file be checked-in? The build machine? Some sort of Subversion hook? This web service must dlls of .NET Framework 3.5 (I have error about System.Linq using when I try to browse the web site) The only place I found where it is possible to change .NET Framework version is application pools management, but The only two options I have are: no management code and .NET Framework 2. In add/remove programs I have .NET Framework 3.5 installed and event does to it repair and iisreset, but I still have only to options in application pools management. Any ideas? Thank you for ahead.

• How to install specific version of MySQL?

  I installed from the repo, 5.0.77... including setup of PowerDNS (and the backend for MySQL). I tried setting up replication from my Master (which is MySQL 5.1.53) but it didn't work even though there were no errors, nothing got replicated. So the last resort is to try the same MySQL version on both the master and the slave (nb, only the slave has pdns installed) How would I go about installing MySQL 5.1.53? I tried downloading the rpm from MySQL (obviously the wrong one, didn't even include the mysql command to shell into the databases), but in turn fucked up the dependencies for pdns' mysql backend. I have the atomic repo which will install MySQL 5.5 (both on my Master server and Slave), but I don't want to do a major upgrade on the master right now as it's in production. Would love some advice!

• Windows 7 MSDN version

  I recently purchased a copy of Windows 7 online. Upon trying to install, it stopped and I was told that it could not find a 64 bit driver for my CD/DVD and I could not finish install. I contacted Microsoft and was told that this was something called an MSDN version according to the product key and that was the reason for the problem. They also said is was illegal to sell it to me. The company I bought it from never returned my calls or emails and luckily I got money back through Amazon. Amazon didn't even want me to send it back. Anyway my question is, is there anyway to load this onto my system and will I have problems or should I just throw it out? Any help would be great. Thanks

• Windows not showing version (or other resources) for files in tooltip

  Whenever I hover the mouse cursor over executable file types (.exe, .dll, etc.) in Windows Explorer, it only shows the Type, Size, and (Modified) Date of the file in the tooltip instead of the Company, Version, Description, etc. This used to work in Windows XP, but Windows 7 is showing me less information which is frustrating because I often need that information to be quickly and easily available (no, opening the Properties dialog or adding columns is not a solution). How can I get Explorer to show me all the relevant information for the files in the tooltip? (Bonus points for also showing it in the Preview pane at the bottom.)

• cmd.exe version comparison?

  When using batch files or console applications on Windows servers the window in question can allow text to be hightlighted (marked) for copying and pasting. Doing this pauses the batch/application and it will only resume after the copy operation. Or this is what I thought to be true. Recently on a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 server I noted that whilst the scrolling was paused the operations were not. Does anyone know if my description in the 1st para is true for older windows is not true for Windows 2003 R2 SP2 when it changed a full version comparison table for cmd.exe across different OS' ? • grep pattern interpretted differently in 2 different systems with same grep version

  We manufacture a linux appliance for data centers, and all are running fedora installed from the same kickstart process. There are different hardware versions, some with IDE hard drives and some SCSI, so the filesystems may be at /dev/sdaN or /dev/hdaN. We have a web interface into these appliances that show disk usage, which is generated using "df | grep /dev/*da". This generally works for both hardware versions, giving an output like follows: /dev/sda2 5952284 3507816 2137228 63% / /dev/sda5 67670876 9128796 55049152 15% /data /dev/sda1 101086 11976 83891 13% /boot However, for one machine, we get the following result from that command: Binary file /dev/sda matches It seems that its grepping files matching /dev/*da for an unknown pattern for some reason, only on this box that is seemingly identical in grep version, packages, kernel, and hardware. I switched the grep pattern to be "/dev/.da" and everything works as expected on this troublesome box, but I hate not knowing why this is happening. Anyone have any ideas? Or perhaps some other tests to try?

  Hi all. Does anyone know of a hosted version of Yahoo! Answers (or Stackoverflow/Superuser) that I could integrate with my site? I know that there are some open-source implementations (see http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/2267/stack-overflow-clones?page=1&tab=votes#tab-top) but I'd rather have some hosted if possible. I know there is http://stackexchange.com/ as well, but I really want some tight integration with the rest of my site. Failing that, has anyone got any experience with the open source versions?   I'm completely new to the world of Xcode. Since my MacBook is too old for installing the newest Xcode version, I'm trying to learn with Xcode 3.2.6. Now I go through a book for learning Objective C with Xcode and I have problems to find several buttons. I already needed to let the green "Run"-button view manually via "customize toolbar", but the buttons to have access to the log navigator still do not appear and I don't know how to do it. That's how my Xcode looks like right now: That's what I'm searching: How can I view those buttons? Is there another way to access to the log navigator?

• Version control and branching when using Oracle

  Hi folks: At work we're using Oracle and C#/ASP.net to handle a customer's website, this site is very large-scale so the database is very large. We use Perforce for our version control, and tack create or replace scripts to FogBugz cases whenever a database change, which has been fine until now, as we are now at a point where five developers are working on five expansions for the system, each on a seperate Perforce branch. Unfortunately, we cannot get duplicate databases, due to the database size, so everyone is still working from the same one. This is obviously a cause of problems: only ten minutes ago we had a bit of an issue where a stored procedure change for a branch propagated over to the Pre-Production server and caused a large number of crashes for the testers. Ideally, we would like a way to track these changes without having to manually keep track of them through FogBugz. My question is: how do you lot handle this situation? I'm sure there must be a good way by now to handle versioning, or at least tracking changes, in an Oracle database.

  Trying to install a fresh install of Sharepoint 2010 (w/ SP1) and SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for Sharepoint. The prerequisites clearly show that Sharepoint 2010 SP1 is needed, which we have installed. However after when trying to install the SQL Server portion we consistently fail the rule SharePoint version requirement for PowerPivot for SharePoint' validation in theSQL Server` install process. Here is the process we are following: 1. install Sharepoint 2010 2. install Sharepoint 2010 SP1 3. install SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for SharePoint Here is a screen shot of the error and the log file error. We are completely stuck at this point, anyone run into this before?

• Can't seem to install the correct version of PHP, using apt-get install

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 LTS server, it's a new install on a VPS box from MediaTemple (their ve server). I'm trying to install PHP 5.4.3 on this box, but I'm having a common problem not matter what version I get. I'm trying to get the php-cgi process, so I do the command apt-get install php-cgi and that installs, but does not provide me with the php-cgi executable. I need this so that I can run php-cgi -b 127.0.0.1:9000 and have it has a FastCGI process for my nginx install. Any idea what I can do to get this to work, bonus points if you can get this to work with PHP 5.4.3, because all I can seem to install is PHP 5.3.5.

• Apache Serving 403 Forbidden after OS X Snow Leopard Upgrade to Version 10.6.6

  I've just upgraded my MacBook Pro to OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.6 and now Apache is misbehaving: requests to http://localhost/ generate a 403 Forbidden response -- FIXED requests to any of my virtual hosts seem to generate a 200 Ok response, but contain zero bytes Some further info that might be useful: I'm using the Apache that comes bundled with OS X. I'm using PHP from http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/ (which is in /usr/local/bin) I've had look at the Apache error log and the only error seems to be the following: [notice] child pid 744 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) I'm completely stumped by this. Any help would be much appreciated. • How can you tell a USB cable version?

  Here is a question a student asked me in one of my A+ certification classes: How can you tell a USB cable version? I honestly dont know the answer, I cant find one either. USB cables are rated for versions 1, 1.1, 2, and now 3. I have seen their versions on the packaging, but never marked on the cable itself. Since the respective versions are manufactured differently, there is a difference between them. So, how can you tell? On Wikipedia: USB cables v.2 and earlier do use a "twisted pair" method, but doesnt specify if the cables themselves are the same or different. Is the cable rating system for v.2 and earlier just marketing hype?
