• Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) Virtual Machine?

  I have been looking into this for a while and have attempted quite a few "solutions" (hackintosh boot images, universal unlockers, etc) before I gave in and asked for help. I know this is extremely difficult to accomplish, especially with an AMD CPU, but it has been done and it can't hurt to ask. Question Does anyone know of any way to actually get Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) to boot in VMware Workstation 8.0.2? I know that Mac OS X is heavily dependant on hardware configuration, so I will post my PC's hardware below, if it helps. As far as I know it's only reliant on the CPU, but I will post it all just in case. • xl create doesn't bring up console

  I've tryed to run VM in Xen 4.2 using xl command (for what I get this should be standard toolstack, while xm is deprecated). In this case I've the following configuration file kernel = '/media/home_separata/domU_kernel/boot/vmlinuz-linux' ramdisk = '/media/home_separata/domU_kernel/boot/initramfs-linux.img' name = "domU_Arch_linux" memory = "512" root = '/dev/xvda1 ro' disk = ['file:/media/home_separata/domU_kernel/arch_linux_kernel.img,xvda1,w'] vif = ['mac=aa:::10:11:f1,ip=192.168.0.2,bridge=xenbr0'] when I try to start the virtual machine with xl create it seems it works (it also bring up the vif interfaces) but if I try to connect via xl console it gives an error: xenconsole: Could not read tty from store: No such file or directory the fun fact is that the I've the problem inverse using xend/xm (in that case xend doesn't bring up vif interfaces but activate console). Does anyone have any suggestion?

  Hi I'm new to ubuntu and linux so this might be a very begginers question. I have several partitions on my pc and I want to be able to access them with the console. How can I access the partitions with the console?

• Issues connecting to a pix 501 via console cable

  Have a pix 501 that was set up to do filtering and I was working on setting the vpn up when I lost ssh connectivity. Looking at the front, all 4 lan lights blink intensely green but in a very repetitive pattern. The funny thing is there are only 3 devices connected to the 4 ports so that's the first element that doesn't look right to me. Console cable light doesn't turn on when cable is plugged in and have tried rebooting it many many times to see the bootup sequence with no result. Also, I cannot connect to it via pdm or console but the traffic is permitted through. Are there any additional troubleshooting steps I could do or should I count it as dead? Thank you.

• xm console command is not working in XEN

  I have XEN 4.0.x.x rpm with CENT OS. I have set it up and have many VMs on it. But problem is when I execute 'xm console ' command from dom0, command just hangs dom0 and some 'y' comes up in next line but nothing really happens. Is it a bug in xen 4.0 and I need to upgrade it or I can tweak some configuration file in /etc/xen/ to make it work. I found following at some site but its not working: In order to be able to login to your domU from the console using: xm create {your hostname}.cfg -c (to the set root password for ssh, for instance, or to see more output than just kernel output when debugging) it may be necessary to add the following line to your /etc/xen/{your hostname}.cfg extra='xencons=tty' Is there any other way to solve it?

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. Thanks for any/all feedback.

• Is there a way to get a 10000x10000 virtual resolution desktop?

  I have a java applet map viewer and I'd like to plot out the map it displays. To do that I need to open it in a high enough resolution to avoid too much stitching. Is there any possible way I could get a desktop with such high resolution? So far I've been able to use panning 2560x1920 by booting windows 7 in VmWare Player. Would it be possible to get it higher? Maybe this would be doable on Linux? The whole thing can be laggy as hell as long as it will render my screenshot...

• Checking if Intel VT-x acceleration is enabled from inside a VMware virtual machine?

  My (Fortune 500) company just rolled out new VMs and everyone is complaining they are dog slow. Is there any way I could verify, from inside a VM, whether Intel virtualization (VT-x) acceleration has been properly enabled? The processor claims to be a Xeon E7-2830 but the experience has been more like a first-gen Atom. I'd ask IT directly but I get the impression they're unlikely to respond to any suggestion that they are, in fact, drooling imbeciles.

  Currently I am using windows version git software for git, I found it is really hard to copy and paste in the console, and the mouse middle key is not supported. I used to putty SSH way to linux box then do things in putty, but at the moment I only have windows. so does anyone know some tools enable end-users have UNIX console ? Mouse middle key and highlight supported is essential. Thanks in advance for any advices. Update: Downloaded virtualbox then install a copy of Linux..then samba... seems making things complicated but handy.

• OTN Virtual Developer Day for WebLogic Server and WebLogic Developer Broadcasts

  To further move the new year of 2011 underway for WebLogic Server, quite a series of hands on technical online events and broadcasts are about to get underway from the WebLogic team. The first is Virtual Developer Day: Oracle WebLogic Server which is an online event that combines hands on labs with WebLogic Server through a series of Virtual Box images. This event will cover things like the new Java EE 6 capabilities one can use on WebLogic Server, using Maven and Hudson with WebLogic Server, developing with Web services on WebLogic Server and even upgrading from Oracle Application Server. Very technical, very hands on. And its global - multiple geographies covered.  Nice! James Bayer has put out a full agenda for this on his blog as well as links on how to register.   I want to have around 60 repositories of projects and I want to serve them from a dedicated remote server(ubuntu) with the help of mercurial server so that all my developers will be able to update their changes. I have followed this article in order to do that but stocked in the Apache Configuration Step (section 2.5 2.5.4). I have some following questions: What are the steps I need to follow to make apache to serve /home/hg/repositories/private/hgweb.cgi when I enter dev.example.com/private ? Is my virtual host file is correct or do I need to change anything ? I bought the example.com and how to make it to serve dev.example.com/private. Do I need to add A name(like : subdomain.example.com and then IP of my server) in the cpannel of hosting company? • VirtualBox : increase hard disk size of the virtual machine

  I have run out of space on my WinXP virtual machine, which I only gave 10 GB space for when I created it. Is there an easy way to increase it to, say, 20 GB? • A Virtual Dilemma

  Solving a Gotcha with VirtualBox Guest Additions I was just building a new virtual machine based off an existing image that didn’t have the Virtual Box Guest Additions enabled.  The guest additions allow tight integration between the guest OS and the host environment, providing seemless mouse transfer and the ability to take advantage of full video screen size.  The guest additions need to be linked with the kernel which requires the kernel-devel package to be installed.  After installing this package and then trying to add the guest additions it failed, suggesting that I might not have the kernel-devel package that I had installed.  After a little though I finally realized what had happened.  When I grabbed the kernel-devel package I hadn’t checked the version of my kernel.  The kernel-devel I downloaded didn’t match the revision of the kernel I was running!  Hence my problems.  I upgraded the kernel to the same revision as my kernel-devel package and rebooted.  I had installed dkms so I was pleased to see that my VBox Additions successfully built and the mouse and screen now worked as expected. So now you know my embarrassing story for the day :-)

• A Virtual Seat at the Architect&rsquo;s Table

  I always have fun producing the Arch2Arch podcasts, but the latest batch was all that and a bag of chips, since I was required to do absolutely no preparation and very little talking, and since the conversation was reminiscent of those I’ve had with various architects (you know who you are) in various watering holes: free-ranging, extemporaneous, and far, far from dull. • Setting up a network between a host and guest virtual machine

  (I'm running ubuntu server 12.04 on virtual box) I'm trying to transfer a file (scp) from my laptop to one of the directories of a virtual machine. I tried sharing folders, but that failed. I'm a bit of a networking newbie. I've looked at like 20-30 pages. Here's one: http://www.howtoforge.com/moving-files-between-linux-systems-with-scp I followed those steps exactly. My problem is that when I try using scp, it just hangs. I'm also not sure which network interface to configure (eth0, eth1?) in the guest OS. Another (significant?) detail is that the inet address of eth0 is 10.0.2.15 instead of something like 192.168.x.y. I've enabled the bridge adapter and the host-only adapter. Both the laptop and guest VM have openssh-server installed. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Is there a better place to ask about this?

• Virtual Hosts Not Working (12.10)

  I'm trying to get virtual hosts up and running on my Ubuntu laptop that has 12.10 installed. I'm running Apache2, and I enabled the virtual hosting module. When I go to 12.0.0.1, I'm able to get the default page. When I go to example.local, I just get the search engine results, instead of the "hey, you're seeing this" page I set up in that directory (/var/www/example.local). I even made sure I have only one "NameVirtualHost *:80" variable active.   Hi, I've developed a Python application that runs both in the GUI mode and the console mode. If any arguments are specified, it runs in a console mode else it runs in the GUI mode. I've managed to freeze this using cx_Freeze. I had some problems hiding the black console window that would pop up with wxPython and so I modified my setup.py script like this: import sys from cx_Freeze import setup, Executable base = None if sys.platform == "win32": base = "Win32GUI" setup( name = "simple_PyQt4", version = "0.1", description = "Sample cx_Freeze PyQt4 script", executables = [Executable("PyQt4app.py", base = base)]) This works fine but now when I try to open up my console and run the executable from there, it doesn't output anything. I don't get any errors or messages so it seems that cx_Feeze is redirecting the stdout somewhere else. Is is possible to get it to work with both mode? Nothing similar to this seems to be documented anywhere. :( Thanks in advance. Mridang
