When was the last time a technology with a scale like that was so error-free? The Web, in comparison, is a joke. The Web was done by amateurs. -- Alan Kay. I am trying to understand the history of the Internet and the web, and this statement is hard to understand. I have read elsewhere that the Internet is now used for very different things than it was designed for, and so perhaps that factors in. What makes the Internet so well done, and what makes the web so amateurish? (Of course, Alan Kay is fallible, and no one here is Alan Kay, so we can't know precisely why he said that, but what are some possible explanations?) *See also the original interview*.

Many of the techniques they're talking about such as AMD and RequireJS are great, but it's hard to know how to integrate them when it comes to Drupal (and do it right, ofc). So my question is if there are any recognized developer/s out there with strong JavaScript AND Drupal experience?

• How can I unit test a class which requires a web service call?

  I'm trying to test a class which calls some Hadoop web services. The code is pretty much of the form: method() { ...use Jersey client to create WebResource... ...make request... ...do something with response... } e.g. there is a create directory method, a create folder method etc. Given that the code is dealing with an external web service that I don't have control over, how can I unit test this? I could try and mock the web service client/responses but that breaks the guideline I've seen a lot recently: "Don't mock objects you don't own". I could set up a dummy web service implementation - would that still constitute a "unit test" or would it then be an integration test? Is it just not possible to unit test at this low a level - how would a TDD practitioner go about this?

  Following the recent release by Microsoft of TypeScript I was wondering if this is something that should be considered for a experienced WinForm and XAML developer looking to get into more web development. From reviewing a number of sites and videos online it appears that the type system for TypeScript makes more sense to me as a thick client developer than the dynamic type system in Javascript. I understand that Typescript compiles down to JavaScript but it appears that the learning curve is shallower due to the current tooling provided by Microsoft. What are your thoughts?

  I'm working at a site similar to Foursquare and Yelp, with approximately 100000 unique requests each week that generates content, growing steadily. We are currently using: Seam as Java web framework. MySQL as DB Hibernate as ORM Hibernate Search as Index EhCache for Caching. Since our site is slowly growing out of the current setup and has a lot of legacy code, it is time for us to start thinking about a major refactoring/changing setup. Web framework We are not ready to change the language but we are leaning towards Spring Web Framework, since: Seam is no more. Almost all of us have worked with Spring and liked it. DB and ORM We have done a little research and we are thinking about MongoDB. Index Do we need to have a separate Index if we use MongoDB? Cache ? So my question is basically: If you take Spring Web Framework and MongoDB into consideration, how would a good setup be for a web application that is growing and handles a lot of logged in users generating input and performing searches?

  by guest blogger Yara Senger With over 2900 developers in person and another 2000 online, The Developer's Conference (TDC) in Florianópolis, Brazil, reminds us that Java is BIG in Brazil. The conference included 20 different tracks, and Java was the most popular track. Java was also a big part of the talks in the IoT, Cloud and BigData tracks. Here's my overview (in Brazilian Portguese): Several JUGs were involved in TDC Florianópolis, serving as track leads, speakers and all-around heros, including SouJava SouJava Campinas GUJava Santa Catarina JUG Vale JUG Maringá Java Bahia GOJava (Goinia) JUG Rio do Sul RS Jug (Rio Grande do Sul) and I thank them for their support and commitment. It is a vibrant and fun community! We saw that the IoT space is maturing rapidly. There are already some related to embedded in the region.  Java Evangelist Bruno Borges and Marco Antonio Maciel gave a view popular talk "Java: Tweet for Beer!" They demonstrated how to make a beer tap controlled by Java and connected to the Internet, using a visual application JavaFX with Java SE 8, running on a Rasperry Pi. Of course, they had to test the application quite throughly.   We Brazilians are training the next generation of Java developers. TDC4Kids was as big success. We made a tour with the kids in all booths and almost everybody talked about Java. Java in government managment (Betha), Java on the 2048  (Oracle), Java on the popcorn machine and Java training (Globalcode & V.Office) and of course: Java & Minecraft! OTN's Pablo Ciccarello was there to support the community.  He did several video interviews with JUG leaders and speakers (mine included). We interacted with thousands of Java developers at The Developer's Conference Florianópolis.   I'm looking for suggestions on the Visual Studio approach to take for a web application that is in the conceptual stage. My environment has a lot of tools: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64bit Visual Studio 2010 Professional Edition Sharepoint 2010 Server Enterprise Edition SQL Server 2008 R2 Office 2010 Professional I know I will need this app to retrieve data from a database (or a web service - not sure exactly at this point). The data needs to be placed in an Excel workbook dynamically. The app will need to have a nice user interface (standard web controls - perhaps with some Javascript effects). The Excel ribbon and worksheet grid will need to be hidden. Some web control(s) will cause the Excel chart(s) to be rendered. I am thinking this sounds like Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) so as to leverage .Net and hide Excel. Can you offer suggestions regarding: One ASP.Net Web App Project One Class Library Project for Excel or perhaps which one of the several different Excel 2010 project types (addin, template, document) Would Excel Services for Sharepoint be useful (or required) ? I am feeling a little overwhelmed with so many choices at this early stage of conceptualizing the app. Can you suggest some ideas for this sort of thing? Also, I am a bit more experienced with C# but I've read VB.Net is better for work with the Excel object model. What are general advises with regard to tool choice and overall approach tradeoffs?

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but it seems to me like most of the web jobs I come across are CRUD, web forms, and data grids. For these jobs a formal CS background doesn't seem necessary, and you could do fine with O'Reilly cookbooks in jQuery, CSS 3, PHP, SQL, or ASP.NET MVC. What kinds of web developer jobs exist that really let you apply your computer science background? Do I need to branch out into other areas of programming to take full advantage of my degree?
