  SPMetal is used to make use of LINQ on a list in SharePoint 2010. By default when you generate SPMetal on a site you will get a code generated file for most of the lists and probably more. Here is a MSDN link for some info on SPMetal.http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee538255(office.14).aspxBut what if you want only to generate the code for one list?Well it is quite simple once you figure it out. You need to add an xml file to override the default settings of SPMetal and specify it in the /parameters option. I will show you how to do this.First create a Folder that will contain two files (GenerateSPMetalCode.bat and SPMetal.xml).Below is the content of the files:GenerateSPMetalCode.bat "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\BIN\SPMetal" /web:http://YourServer /code:OutPutFileName.cs /language:csharp /parameters:SPMetal.xml pause SPMetal.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <Web AccessModifier="Internal" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/SharePoint/2009/spmetal"> <List Name="ListName"> <ContentType Name="ContentTypeName" Class="GeneratedClassName" /> </List> <ExcludeOtherLists></ExcludeOtherLists> </Web> You will have to change some of the text in the files so that it will be specific to your SharePoint Server Setup. In the SPMetal.xml file you need to change ListName to the name of your list and the ContentTypeName to the name of the content type you want to extract. The GeneratedClassName can be anything but perhaps you should rename it to something more sensible.Adding the following line: '<List Name="ListName"><ContentType Name="ContentTypeName" Class="GeneratedClassName" /> </List>'  makes sure that any custom columns added to an OOTB list like contacts or tasks are also generated, which are missed out in a regular generation.So now when you run it the SPMetal command will read the SPMetal.xml list and override its commands. ExcludeOtherLists element makes it so that only the code for the lists you specify will be generated. For some reason I got an error if I had this element above the List element.You sould now have a code file called OutPutFileName.cs that has been generated. You can now put this in your SharePoint project for use with your LINQ queries against that list.I will soon write a LINQ example that uses the generated class. UPDATE: Add the /namespace parameter to add a namespace to the generated code. • Web app to take screen shot of website and annotate?

  Does anyone know of a website that will take a full screen shot of another website and let users write notes over it then send that annotated photo by email or private link? Basically looking for quicker way to write notes on a site other than taking a screen shot my self and putting it into photoshop. Just an update, I don't need any browser extensions which I already have and do the same. I'm looking for a website app which does this to give to a client.

• Gnome-Shell panel disappeared - How to get it back?

  I am on Gnome-Shell and using Ubuntu 11.10. The problem is after a recent update and also after installing a few extensions, when I logged in to Gnome Shell, I can't find the top panel or AWN. Only the wallpaper is showing and then Conky is displaying. It also seems to me that for some reason the display effects are not working and that is why AWN is not showing. Need your help to get back the panel.

• WiFi on Ubuntu 12.04 custom: downloading unbearably slow

  iwconfig reports 11 Mbps, yet I've seen as low as <1 KBps. This is the latest in my laundry list of Ubuntu problems in a dual-boot machine (cyberpowerpc custom, intel i7-3820, nvidia gtx 570). I received it two days ago, Windows 7 running fine, still having problems with Ubuntu. The browsing is intermittent but unacceptable. e.g. I could get to this site last night but I couldn't post this question. The downloading is unbearably slow, I can't download anything or install any packages because the speed is so slow. e.g. I am trying to install vim which is inexplicably missing from my 12.04 install (add another one to the problems list) and my download speed reported in the terminal was 241 B/s. Yes, bytes. iwconfig reports 11 Mbps, which further adds to the confusion. User@ubuntu:~$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"linksys" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 00:18:39:76:2C:A1 Bit Rate=11 Mb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off Link Quality=36/70 Signal level=-74 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:54 Invalid misc:18 Missed beacon:0 eth0 no wireless extensions. I see this is a problem a lot of people, but none of the on line solutions have worked for me so far. e.g. one site recommends editing the ath9k.conf file in /etc/modprobe.d, yet this file isn't even in the folder: User@ubuntu:/$ cd etc/modprobe.d User@ubuntu:/etc/modprobe.d$ ls alsa-base.conf blacklist-oss.conf blacklist-ath_pci.conf blacklist-rare-network.conf blacklist.conf blacklist-watchdog.conf blacklist-firewire.conf dkms.conf blacklist-framebuffer.conf nvidia-current_hybrid.conf blacklist-modem.conf nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf I think the nvidia gpu might be mucking things up. I had the "blinking cursor" problem when installing in the first place, and then I had the monitor out of range problem as well. I have my faithful Asus laptop, which is running Ubuntu 12.04 just fine. The only difference is executing host -t SOA local in the terminal gives User@ubuntu:~$ host -t SOA local local has SOA record local. nobody.localhost. 42 86400 43200 604800 10800 in my new machine, and the command reports Host local. not found in the laptop. Help would be most welcome, as I am in danger of reverting back to Windows. I'm seriously considering it. Sorry for the length, trying to show my effort in resolving the issue and include terminal snippets that might be helpful.

  You can set memory usage limits for standard Linux applications in: /etc/security/limits.conf Unfortunately, I previously thought these limits only apply to user applications and not system services. This means that users can by bypass their limits by launching applications through a system service such as screen. I'd like to know if it's possible to let users use screen but still enforce application limits. Jeff had the great idea of using nohup which obeys user limits (wonderful!), but I would still like to know if it's possible to mimic the useful windowing features of screen. EDIT: It seems my screen sessions are now obeying my hard address space limits defined in /etc/security/limits.conf. I must have been making some mistake. • Using command line to connect to a wireless network with an http login

  I'm trying to connect to a wifi network where it hijacks all requests and redirects you to a page where you have to agree to a terms of use before it lets you connect to the actual outside world. This is a pretty common practice, and usually doesn't pose much of a problem. However, I've got a computer running Ubuntu 9.10 server with no windowing system. How can I use the command line to agree to the terms of use? I don't have internet access on the computer to download packages via apt-get or anything like that. Sure, I can think of any number of workarounds, but I suspect there's an easy way to use wget or curl or something. Basically, I need a command line solution for sending an HTTP POST request essentially clicking on a button. For future reference, it'd be helpful to know how to send a POST request with, say, a username and password if I ever find myself in that situation in another hotel or airport.

• How do you disable the magnifier in Windows Vista?

  Every so often while I'm working, if I accidentally jolt the mouse, the magnifier starts. I'm fairly sure the cause is that some comination of mouse keys is supposed to start the magnifier, and I occasionally hit the right keys accidentally. However, I've never been able to reproduce the behaviour deliberately so I don't know which combination. This is very annoying since switching the magnifier off is non-trivial (control panel, or run dialog, which are hard to use when the magnifier keeps - ummm - windowing and magnifying the bit of screen you're about to click on :-) ). So I'm wondering if there's any way to disable the magnifier completely, so that it doesn't start when you do whatever it is you'd normally do to the mouse to start it? Anyone know?

  JEOS stands for Just Enough Operating System.  It is  great environment for building virtual machines without all the clutter of a windowing system, games, office products, etc.  It is from Ubuntu and you install it using the Ubuntu server install, but rather than picking a standard install, press F4 and choose “Install a minimal system.” Note: The “Install a minimal virtual machine” is specific to VMWare and I plan to use VirtualBox. Be sure to include Open SSH in the install so that it installs sshd. *** Also, if you plan to install XE, you’ll need to modify the partitions to have a larger swap space (at least 1.5 G). *** Once the install is done, I find it useful to install a few other items. Update Ubuntu apt-get update Install some other tools apt-get openjdk-6-jre Yes, java will be included in any of the WebLogic installs, but I need this one if I want to do remote display (for config wizards, etc). apt-get gcc Some apps require to rebuild the kernel modules, so you’ll need a basic compiler. Install guest additions (Choose the VirtualBox Devices->Install Guest Additions…” option.  This sets up a /dev/cdrom or /dev/cdrom1.  You’ll need to manually mount this temporarily: sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt Then run the linux .bin file. Update nofile limits.  Most java apps fail with the standard ubuntu settings: edit /etc/security/limits.conf and add these lines at the end: *     soft nofile 65535 *     hard nofile 65535 root  soft nofile 65535 root  hard nofile 65535 These numbers are very high and I wouldn’t do this on a production system, but for this environment it is fin. To get rid of the annoying piix error on boot, add the following line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file blacklist i2c_piix4

• Why did the web win the space of remote applications and X not?

  The X Window System is 25 years old, it had it's birthday yesterday (on the 15'th). As you probably are aware of, one of it's most important features is the separation of the server side and the client side in a way that neither Microsoft's, Apples or Wayland's windowing systems have. Back in the days (sorry for the ambiguous phrasing) many believed X would dominate over other ways to make windows because of this separation of server and client, allowing the application to be ran on a server somewhere else while the user clicks and types on her own computer at home. This use obviously still exists, but is marginalized at best. When we write and use programs that run on a server we almost always use the web with it's html/css/js. Why did the web win, and X not? The technologies used for the web (said html/css/js) are a mess. Combined with all the back-end-frameworks (Rails, Django and all) it really is a jungle to navigate thru. Still the web thrives with creativity and progress, while remote X apps do not.
