• Misconfigured external monitor on Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3

  I have an external monitor (specifically, an HDTV) hooked up to my 2.53GHz 13" macbook pro. This display works fine and I use it with my mac in clamshell mode (eg. with an external keyboard/mouse and the laptop closed and the built-in mac screen turned off) My Mac has multiple users on it. For User A I can use the mac with the external monitor in both clamshell and dual-monitor setups. For User B, I can use the monitor in a dual-monitor setup, but whenever I switch to clamshell mode the Mac switches to an incorrect output resolution or frequency setting that my HDTV doesn't recognize, resulting in a blank screen and a message about Unsupported Resolution. Chances are I did this to myself by misconfiguring my display settings at some point in the past, but I have no idea how to undo it. I (obviously) can't seen the display to change the settings when it's borked. I can see the display settings if I switch to Dual-monitor mode, but those settings only affect the dual monitor setup; no matter how I change the settings in dual-monitor mode, the clamshell mode setup remains borked. How can I dig myself out of this hole?

• OS X Keeps prompting me for SSH private key passphrase (OS X 10.6.8)

  I have a private key to ssh into my server and the connection works. In my hosts file I have: Host myhost HostName xxx.xxx.xxx.xx GlobalKnownHostsFile ~/.ssh/known_hosts port 22 User myuser IdentityFile ~/.ssh/mykey_dsa IdentitiesOnly yes .. and then I type ssh myhost Every time I connect, I get the Mac OS X keychain prompt and I tell OS X to remember the passphrase but then when I disconnect from ssh and re-connect, I am prompted to add the passphrase to the keychain again. This is only a recent problem so I suspect and issue with Keychain? To be clear, I can 're-add' to keychain every time and connect but this defats the purpose. The permissions on my dsa key are set at 600 or -rw-------@ I tried repairing disk permissions but that did no good. My Google-foo is also failing me, nothing of use came up. • WSS Search fills 10 GB limit on SBS server 2011

  I've got a SBS Server 2011 Standard SP1 that isn't very busy. 2 Users local and 2 remote. We have sharepoint that has maybe a dozen small documents at most. I've just started getting the following two error occur Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.MSSBatchHistory'.'IX_MSSBatchHistory' in database 'WSS_Search_SERVER' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. And CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database. Digging around in SQL manager I see that WSS Search DB file size is 10241MB, the log file is only 147 MB Firstly, why is WSS Search taking up so much space? How can I stop it from doing so, and what can I do now to get things running ok. I know about log file truncating and this isn't the case here since the log is tiny. Any help is appreciated. • Netgear GS724Tv3 and link aggregation Mac OS X Server 10.6.8

  I need to link aggregate 2 sets of ports on the Netgear GS724T with my Apple server tower (latest generation). I have 2 built in ports and 2 ports on a PCIe ethernet card. It is not obvious to me how to properly configure the Netgear end. I have access to the Netgear box through its web interface, just don't know how to properly set the settings. I tried going to Netgear for help, but they said my software support has expired. I bought this unit on their recommendation - they say it is compatible with 802.3ad protocol. I cannot locate any references to this protocol in the manual and I noticed some people in formus say that this device is actually not compatible with 802.3ad and that Netgear is misleading potential customers by saying it is. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, M My own answer - posted as edit because of restrictions on my user: OK folks, turns out one must use a Windows machine on this one or nothing makes sense. I was unable to get much farther than viewing the default inactive LAGs because in Firefox and Safari on Mac things don't make much sense - i.e. the Apply buttons (supposedly JavaScript) don't work. You can view the configurations, but none of the modifications you make stick. Then, in Switching - LAGs, choose the ports to include and make sure you switch the LAG type from Static to LACP and all is well. Haven't tested the performance of the config yet, but both sides appear to be happy with the configuration. Apple server says link active and so does the Netgear.   I have dead HP DL 380G4 with RAID 1+0 with 1 logical volume from 4x72GB drives on built-in Smart Array 6i 128Mb BBWC. It was shut down properly. It seems it was usual death for Proliant with ILO led 2,3,8 lighting. I want to move array to another identical server with same raid firmware level. What is the best strategy?: I have RAID 1+0 on bay 0 bay 1 bay 2 bay 3 As I understand bay0+bay1 are in RAID 1 , bay2+bay3 are in RAID 1, and both RAID 1 pairs are in RAID 0. So should I : Clear RAID config on new server, insert bay 0, bay 2 and power-on or Create RAID 1+0 with 1 logical volume from clear HDDs , and then poweroff ,remove HDDs and insert 2 HDDs(bay 0, bay 2) from old RAID 1+0. then power-on. (each hdd has its raid position info stored but may be could work on same config) According to documentation for Smart Array 6i it could be possible to migrate. however one requirement point is unclear for me Before you move drives, the following conditions must be met: • The array is in its original configuration. " What is orginal and non-original config for RAID 1+0? Another point "If you want to move an array to another controller, you must also consider the following additional limitations: • All drives in the array must be moved at the same time." I want to move one hdd from each RAID 1 pair. to have mirrors untouched just in case. Do they mean to move all 4 simultaniously? Smart Array 6i User Guide: Moving Drives and Arrays You can move drives to other ID positionson the same array controller. You can also move a complete arrayfrom one controller to another, even if the controllers are on different servers. If you want to move an array to another controller, you must also consider the following additional limitations: • All drives in the array must be moved at the same time. • In most cases, a moved array (and the logical drives that it contains) can still undergo arraycapacity expansion, logical drive capacity extension, or migration of RAID level orstripe size. When all the conditions have been met: Back up all data before removing any drives or changing configuration. This step is requiredif you are moving data-containing drives from a controller that does not have a battery-backed cache. Power down the system. If you are moving an array from a controller that contains a RAID ADG logical volume to a controller that does not support RAID ADG: Move the drives. Power up the system. If a 1724 POST message is displayed, drive positions were changed successfully and the configuration was updated. If a 1785 (NotConfigured)POST message is displayed: a. Power down the system immediately to prevent data loss. b. Return the drives to their original locations. c. Restore the data from backup, if necessary. • Laptop Acer Travelmate 4050 takes over 10 Mins to POST

  Hi, I am a computer tech and have received a laptop for repair. I noticed when I turned it on the laptop would not do anything for a min or two (the fan would run up and stop, power led would shine and some cd rom activity then stop). It would sit there with a black screen. Suddenly after a random number of minutes (between 1-20mins!) the Acer BIOS screen would display and POST would happen before booting into Windows XP. It has frozen in XP at various times and pointed towards a CPU fault and over heating. The fan was on its last legs, sounded like a car engine, so I replaced this. Still same issues. I next replaced the CPU like for like. Same problems. Also applied new thermal paste between the cpu and heatsink, when running the fan kicks in occasionally (not as often as I thought it would) and I left it playing mp3, online radio and updating to service pack 3 and it wouldnt freeze. shutting down ok, cold start, not ok. Waits again before showing the BIOS screen. The hard disk was also making a screaming noise (SMART test and chkdsk passed) but I also replaced this. The laptop powers up with and without the battery so dont think its a battery issue. Running out of ideas and wondered if anyone had any advice. Thanks

• Improve speed of "start menu" in Linux Mint 10 - Ubuntu 10.10 derivative

  I have a global menu (including application, administration and system tabs) that is taking too much time (for me) to load (about 2.5 seconds). Of course, this time is taken only during first start. After it have loaded, next times are better ( less than 0.2 miliseconds) The menu was taking more time before (about 5 seconds), and I found that was because of the 'Other' part of the menu, that included many applications installed with Wine, so I removed all of them (I didn't need them at all). I have a "normal" knowledge of programming, and I think that the process of starting the menu for the first time has some kind of "cache function", that tries to find which apps are present that need to be placed under menu to be shown to user. But didn't found this function so that I could analyze in details what he is doing (if searching for files under "~/.local/share/applications" or anything else). Also, I found that hitting "Alt-F2" also fires this "cache function", because after waiting it to load, the process of opening the menu took less than 0.2 miliseconds. So, could anyone help me in order to reduce this time? I found on internet that some user could reduce the time by resizing the icons of applications. But found here that most of my icons are already at 25x25 size. Any other idead? Maybe a multiprocess to load it, or include it under startup... don't know. Ps: Sorry if this is an awkward question, but I just do not like waiting for things to happen, and think that this process should be smoother than it's now. Also, thanks in advance!

• Mavericks not booting after successful installation over Lion (10.7.5)

  On my 2012 MacBook Pro (15 inch, non retina, i7, 10GB RAM) after successful installation when Mavericks tried to boot, it is freezing there with "Still waiting for root device" (Seen Using CMD + V during boot). Someone please help. My Mac is not usable anymore. Boots in safe mode but freezes in safe mode too. From safe mode reinstalled Mavericks but failed again with same error. If it can't be fixed please let me know if it can be reverted.

• ubuntu server 10 - slow and can't remove desktop environment

  i'm running ubuntu server 10.10 with the desktop environment. simple page requests are taking over 5 seconds even when connecting to the server through our local network. i believe this is partially related to having the desktop environment installed, as the server worked faster (but not as fast as it should considering that it's on the local network), but tasksel fails every time (aptitude failed 100). my knowledge of networking and linux in general is limited. would really appreciate ideas on how i can troubleshoot this problem. oh also, in the system monitor, one of the processors is almost always around 100%. i doubt this is normal too....

• Disk names in Solaris 10 for ZFS: SAS WWN instead of c0t0d0

  I currently have a server running Solaris 10u9 with a SAS enclosure (Dell PowerVault MD1000) filled with SATA disks attached to an SAS card (LSI 3801E). It happily recognizes the 15 disks in the MD1000 and presents them each disk in the traditional solaris form (c1t12d0, c1t13d0, c1t15d0, etc). My home ZFS setup (Nexenta CP3 + LSI 9200-16E + directly cabled SATA disks) presents disks as their SAS WWN ID (ex: c3t600039300001EA56d0). Although this ID is longer, I've found it much easier to troubleshoot because the cabling/slot is irrelevant, ZFS just identifies the disk by ID, if it's connected it finds it. Most manufacturers print the WWN right on the disk's top label, can't get much easier than that. So how can I get Solaris to identify disks by SAS WWN instead of by the cXtXdX?

  We are planning to move mysql to dedicated box. At this moment we have web servers and mysql is running on each. Question is: cheaper is to buy 10G switch and put 10G network card into mysql server. Or buy normal gigabit switch and connect mysql box to switch with multiple network cables. In 1G scenario then we give each web server different mysql IP address. I don't think, that mysql box with one 1G link is enough to to satisfy multiple web box mysql traffic. At this moment we have 3 servers witch are running mysql/web. Plan is to add fourth server for mysql only. Thanks. Edit: if we buy 1G switch with mini-GBIC ports. Can we put in mini-GBIC 10G connectors and then connect mysql box to that port?

• Symmetrix gatekeepers on Solaris 10

  I have some Solaris machines that are connected to EMC Symmetrix for SAN storage. Apparently the Symm has a gatekeeper device that is used with the symmetrix CLI. We don't need the CLI, but I have these gatekeeper devices that constantly fill /var/adm/messages and the like with corrupt label errors. Is there anything I can do (short of deleting the devices on machine start) to get rid of them? Or should I just try to get our SAN guy to get the installer for the CLI? These things are getting annoying, and the devfsadmd daemon keeps rediscovering them on boot.

• Backup Exec 10 - Network connection to the remote agent has been lost

  Okay, so I have 4 remote offices, all running off of a 3mb ethernet connection. Two sites are part of a WAN and 2 sites are using 3mb connections over a site to site tunnel. I am using Backup Exec 2010, I have the remote agent installed on all the remote servers. For the past few weeks now, on the two sites running over the site to site tunnel have been failing with the following error message now. "The network connection to the Backup Exec Remote Agent has been lost. Check for network errors" We used to be on a DSL connection site to site tunnel, now we changed to the 3mb ethernet connection using site to site tunnel. I have to find out, has it been failing ever since we changed, or just recently. Backup exec support is telling me it is a network issue. My communication or connection to the server is solid, we don't have any issues, or outages. So I am baffled on why this continues to fail. And why just those two sites.. Any advice?

• How to stop nginx on Mac OS 10.6.3

  I've installed nginx server on my Mac from MacPorts: sudo port install nginx. Then I followed the recommendation from the port installation console and created the launchd startup item for nginx, then started the server. It works fine (after I renamed nginx.conf.example to nginx.conf and renamed mime.types.example to mime.types), but I couldn't stop it... I tried sudo nginx -s stop - this doesn't stop the server, I can still see "Welcome to nginx!" page in my browser on http://localhost, also I still see master and worker processes of nginx with ps -e | grep nginx. What is the best way to start/stop nginx on Mac? BTW, I've added "daemon off;" into nginx.conf - as recommended by various resources. Thank you.

  After upgrading to Lion, all my virtualhosts stopped working. They redirect to "It works" main apache page on my device for some weird reason. • Logitech Performance MX Mouse Jumps on OS X Lion (10.7.4)

  I have a Logitech MX Revolution wireless mouse that I am trying to use with OS X Lion. Everything is working except for one problem... there is a small, but quite noticeable, jump when the mouse cursor is moved. The problem is mostly prevalent when dragging and dropping files or trying to highlight items. It makes performing any task with the mouse accurately next to impossible. I did quite a bit of looking and found that all kinds of people have had mouse issues with OS X. I've tried all of the following with absolutely no success: Using the official drivers from Logitech (these performed worse than the default mouse drivers in OS X) Using SteerMouse as a third party mouse driver. This worked ever so slightly better than the default driver, but still suffered quite frequently from the skipping problem Cleaning the sensor on the mouse and ensuring it's not the result of the surface that it's being used on. Tested the mouse on a Windows machine. The mouse worked absolutely flawlessly on the other machine. Changed the channel that my wireless router operates on by the off chance my problems were the result of interference. This also had no effect. I can't think of anything else that could possibly interfere with the mouse. I'm am out of ideas on what to try, so I would really appreciate if anyone has any suggestions. I should also mention that an old wired mouse I had laying around worked just fine when I plugged it in. This really isn't the best solution, however, as I really prefer the MX Revolution.
