• Android game development in c++

  So being a primarily c/c++ developer, I've always thought that the only option for mobile game development for me was using iOS, which allows for c/c++ (and minimising objective C). I heard from a friend though, that android has a native development toolkit which allows for c++ code to work on android. Has anyone used this, and if so, how do you find it? I mean, will it "just work" like iOS, or are there more considerations that need to be taken care of due to the wide variety of android devices available?

  For .NET 2.x/3.x there exists a CSS-Friendly Adapter on CodePlex that emits markup for an ASP.NET Menu Control as an ul. The .NET 4.0 Menu control will also emit an ul, but the CSS class names are different from those emitted by the CSS-Friendly Adapter 1.0 on CodePlex. In the interests of having a single version of CSS for .NET 2/3/4 sites, I want to create a version of the CSS-Friendly menu adapter that emits the same markup as the .NET 4.0 Menu control. Before doing so, I thought I'd ask here to see if it's already been done, so I don't reinvent the wheel. Anyone?

• How to disable WM6.5.3 gestures?

  I am working on a .NET 2.0 application targetting the WM5 SDK, what is the correct way to disable the gesture functionality when running on a WM6.5.3 device that only affects the forms I am using? This is causing an issue when I have a signature capture control inside a tab control - when the signature is entered it's quite common for the tab control to switch tabs as WM6.5.3 picks it up as a gesture. I don't want to disable the gesture functionality device wide, nor can I upgrade the application to target the WM6.5.3 SDK as it still needs to work on older devices. Cheers

• Best direction for displaying game graphics in C# App

  I am making a small game as sort of a test project, nothing major. I just started and am working on the graphics piece, but I'm not sure the best way to draw the graphics to the screen. It is going to be sort of like the old Zelda, so pretty simple using bitmaps and such. I started thinking that I could just paint to a Picture Box control using Drawing.Graphics with the Handle from the control, but this seems cumbersome. I'm also not sure if I can use double buffering with this method either. I looked at XNA, but for now I wanted to use a simple method to display everything. So, my question. Using the current C# windows controls and framework, what is the best approach to displaying game graphics (i.e. Picture Box, build a custom control, etc.)

• Memory leak with ContextMenuStrip

  I'm creating a lot of custom controls and adding them to a FlowLayoutPanel. There is also a ContextMenuStrip created and populated at design time. Every time a control is added to the panel it has its ContextMenuStrip property assigned to this menu, so that all controls "share" the same menu. But I noticed when the controls are removed from the panel and disposed of, the memory in use in Task Manager doesn't drop. It rises around 50kB every time a control is created and added to the layout panel. I downloaded the trial of .NET Memory Profiler and it showed there were references to the menu strip hanging around after the controls were disposed. I changed the code to explicitly set the ContextMenuStrip property to null before disposing of the control, and yep, the memory is now released. Why is this? Shouldn't the GC clean up this type of thing?

• Closing a window when it's "no longer needed".

  This is kind of a hard question to describe, and I've searched for about an hour now to no avail. Essentially, picture a small 'flyout' window like the Windows 7 Wireless Control or the Volume Slider from the system tray(notification area). When you click on the icon, the application pops up with focus, and if you click off of it, the window destroys itself. I thought it woudl be easily solved by simply having my window destroy it self when it loses focus (I've been listening for WM_KILLFOCUS), but the problem is, if the icon is clicked, my window does not always get focus. Since this isn't the case, if the user clicks my icon, and then clicks away because it was a mistake (on the desktop say), then how can I set my app to close? I've tried messing with SPY++ but checking the volume control / wireless control apps are proving difficult as they disappear when I try to get their window/process handles. Thanks!

• How do I make a background thread in Java that allows the main application to exit completely? This

  I have a Java application that creates a new thread to do some work. I can launch the new thread with no problems. When the "main" program terminates, I want the thread I created to keep running - which it does... But the problem is, when I run the main application from Eclipse or from Ant under Windows, control doesn't return unless the background process is killed. If I fork the main java process in ant, I want control to return to ant once the main thread is done with its work... But as it is, ant continues to wait until both the main process and the created thread are both terminated. How do I launch the thread in the background such that control will return to ant when the "main" application is finished? (By the way, when I run the same application under Linux, I am able to do this with no problems).

Some participants of our project often have slow Internet connection (for example during travel), and therefore it is important for us to have a source control system that does not consume too much traffic. I was unable to find information on traffic consumption when using TFS 2010. Does anyone has such info? Does TFS 2010 support traffic compression? Do other source control systems (like SVN, for example) produce less or more traffic than TFS 2010?

• WPF: Hidden parent and visible child

  As of last night, I decided to start learning about WPF and have been reading through a number of online tutorials and books. This is a huge shift. One feature that has fascinated me is the implicit property value inheritance. I know in the WinForms world, if a control is not visible then neither are any of the child controls. Same seems to be true in the WPF world, as expected. I wondered if explicitly setting the child control's Visibility property would allow for an invisible parent and visible child and it did not. Is this something that would be possible in WPF? Can you have a container control that is hidden with visible children? This is more an exercise of curiosity than anything. I'm still trying to wrap my head around a lot of what I've been reading.

The solution for IE and firefox is to cast the object to a RenderedRemoteWebElement and then call the property Displayed.   I know that peripheral devices such as a hard driver, a floppy driver, etc are controlled by reading/writing certain control registers on their device controllers. I am wondering about the following questions: Is it true that when these peripheral devices are plugged onto the computer, the addresses(port numbers) of their control registers are thus determined by how they are attached to the address bus (i.e. the hard-wiring rules, not any soft things)? Who makes the scheme of the port number assignment? If I was given a naked computer(with no operating system and with many peripheral devices), how could I figure out the port number assignment so I can use them to control peripheral deveices.   I'm looking for a good jQuery or CSS, or combo, library to enance my left side menu in an an intranet application. I don't like the 'hover only' expand/collapse style of the ASP.NET Menu control on its own, and I don't like the 'icon-click only' expand/collapse style of the TreeView control on its own. I plan on trying the CSS Control Adapters, to render the menu with some self-respect, i.e. as nested <ul> or <ol> elements instead of the usual orgy of tables. Beyond that, I need something to give a bit of style and menulike behaviour to these nested lists, and I would prefer a jQuery plugin for this. Which should I use?

  I'm currently writing a tiny webapp for my HTPC (actually, a PC serving as both a media player and web- / fileserver) that will allow me to remotely control the playing of audio, without having to turn on my TV just to switch songs. I'm using Windows Media Player as my audio player of choice, and I thought I could control it through PHP's COM Class. Unfortunately, I've not been able to find any documentation or examples on controlling WMP through this interface. Can anyone point me in the right direction here? A second (and much less preferable) solution would be to use PHP's exec() call to start batch files that, in turn, control WMP.

  I have a desktop application (forms) with a tab control, I assign a tab and a new custom webrowser control. I open up about 10 of these tabs. Each one visits about 100 - 500 different pages. The trouble is that if 1 webbrowser control has a problem it shuts down the entire program. I want to be able to close the offending webbrowser control and open a new one in it's place. Is there any event that I need to subscribe to catch a crashing or unresponsive webbrowser control ?   I am trying to retrieve file path for a html file that is embedded in resource (resx file) in VS2008 C# project. I want to give path of this file to native webbrowser control (PIEHtml) to be able to navigate (DTM_NAVIGATE) in my application. I know I can pass the string to this control using DTM_ADDTEXTW but since html text size is so big, I dont want to pass string to the control. I need to somehow extract the file path for this html file embedded inside resource manager. I tried using but this does not give the file path of html inside assembly: private ResourceManager resManager = new ResourceManager("AppName.FolderName.FileName", System.Reflection.Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly()); this.lbl.Text = resManager.GetString("StringInResources"); and also read Retrieving Resources in Satellite Assemblies but it did not solve my problem.
