• Where do I get the source code to customize Unity?

  So one of the main reasons I migrated to Ubuntu 12.04 from Windows 7 was to be able to have more control over my system due to the flexibility and customizability of a Linux operating system. However, with Ubuntu I do not feel as if I am as in control as I can be. What I mean to say is, where are the source codes and everything for all of this that I can edit on my machine. For example, suppose I want to position my dock on the left to be on the right without wanting to install any new software. I simply want to see the GUI files and reposition it myself. How can I do that, if that's even possible? Thank You!

  I received a software update for Ubuntu 12.10 while using Zorin OS6 wireless. I accepted the update and installed 12.10. Please tell me the step by step, using layman's terms, on how to get Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet? I am receiving DNS server error with both browsers. I can connect to my router wired or wireless. I posted and received initial information but was not sure exactly what some of the terms were and or what to do next etc. I am not necessarily familiar with some technical terms, or do I need to install additional plug-ins? I do not know what proxy or DCHP means or what do with these terms please, please help. I am not a programmer, nor do I work in IT. Again please help.

• Install Ubuntu or Kubuntu?

  I want to upgrade my Ubuntu Lucid to Kubuntu Maverick (with a fresh install of course). I want to try KDE, but I have heard there are slight issues with the native QT applications compared to the GTK application equivalents - such as nvidia-settings, Gimp, Ubuntu Software Centre, and especially th eSynaptic package manager (which in detail showed the administration package / KPackageKit is not powerful yet than synaptic) I believe we can have run GTK+ applications in KDE, but GTK+ applications do not blend with the KDE desktop. Also Java does not provide a GUI for KDE/QT. Should I install Kubuntu (KDE / QT) or stay with ubuntu (GNOME / GTK +)?

• What approaches can I take to lower the odds of introducing new bugs in a complex legacy app?

  Where I work I often have to develop (and bug fix) in an old system (.NET 1) whos code is complete spaghetti - with little thought given to variable names, program structure nor comments. Because of this it takes me ages to understand what bits need changed, and I often 'break' the existing software because I've made a modification. I really really want to spend a couple of months (with colleagues) going through it to refactor but existing developers both can't see the need - nor think theres time for this (the system is massive). I dread having to work on its code as it takes days to fix something only to find out I've broken something else. This obviously makes me look incompetent - so how can I deal with this?

• Why are the packages found with apt-get always horribly out of date?

  Whenever I use the package manager, it can only ever find really old versions of stuff. Example: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install postgresql The best it can do is version 8.4 (3 years out of date). Trying to get a later version, I get: $ sudo apt-get install postgresql-9.1 Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done E: Couldn't find package postgresql-9.1 I experience the same issue whenever I use the package manager, so I usually just download and build things from source. How can I make it find up-to-date software?

  We've all seen countless examples of software that ships with "minimum system requirements" like the following: Windows XP/Vista/7 1GB RAM 200 MB Storage How are these generally determined? Obviously sometimes there are specific constraints (if the program takes 200 MB on disk then that is a hard requirement). Aside from those situations, many times for things like RAM or processor it turns out that more/faster is better with no hard constraint. How are these determined? Do developers just make up numbers that seem reasonable? Does QA go through some rigorous process testing various requirements until they find the lowest settings with acceptable performance? My instinct says it should be the latter but is often the former in practice.

  I'll be working on a software project with some friends of mine, and I've been appointed technical lead. None of these guys is a bad programmer at all, but I do have significantly more experience than them. I need to be able to distribute the work among everyone on the team, while also making sure that we don't tread on one another's toes; that they meet the relatively high standards of quality and scalability that we need to make this project successful, without requiring me to review everything they commit. How should I maintain standards while avoiding micromanagement? Is it enough to make some diagrams, schedule some code reviews, and trust that I'll be able to fix anything that they might break, or should I go the TDD route and write explicit tests for the team to satisfy?

Background I am a contract developer and have just been asked to provide a general liability policy for my next gig. In 6-7 years this has never been asked of me. Question Is this common? If so, can anyone recommend a good underwriter that focuses on what we do as contract software developers? I realize that Google could help me find underwriters but it won't give me unbiased public opinion about which companies actually understand what we do and factor that into the price of the policy.   I've searched around Ask Ubuntu and the App Developer site, but I can't seem to find the answers to my questions. I'm wanting to get back into programming, and I'd eventually like get into app development for Ubuntu, but I'm not sure where to get started. Which version of Ubuntu is currently recommended for app development, especially for those wanting to publish their apps to the Software Centre? Should app developers use the current LTS release, or, can any of the new releases be used? Should developers use the 32-bit or 64-bit edition of Ubuntu, or does this not matter?   That disconcerting news is what Mark Hachman is reporting for Read Write Web. One can more or less safely assume that Microsoft will come up with its own antivirus software for Windows RT. Still, this is a rather unusual state of affairs; why is the company doing this? As an Ask Ubuntu user I can see that most of the users (including myself) are asking questions about entertainment related problems. Is that all? No commercial use with it? • Problem with dash - there are no programs on the list

  As I said. There are no programs on the dash list (seacher on appmenu). Yesterday I logged into my account and I tried to find some program but there wasn't any! Additionaly, I tried to view installed programs and manually find program which I looked for, but nothing was displayed :( And today, when I want to turn on Ubuntu Software Center, it just don't turn on .< I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 (64bit). I installed "fresh" O.S. few days ago. Ubuntu is updated and has many Gigabytes of disk memory available. Please help me and my unfortunate O.S. Thank you for all answers.

• Compilable modern alternatives to C/C++

  I am considering writing a new software product. Performance will be critical, so I am wary of using an interpreted or language or one that uses a emulation layer (read java). Which leads me to thinking of using C (or C++) however these are both rather long in the tooth. I haven't used either for a long time. I figure in the last 20 years someone should have created something which is reasonably popular and is nice to code in and is complied. What more modern alternatives are there to C for writing high performance code compiled code? edit in response to comments If C++ is a different beast than it was 15 years ago, I would consider it, I guess I had an assumption that it had some inherent problems. Parallelisation would be important, but probably not across multiple machines.

• What technology should I concentrate on for mobile development? [closed]

  Firstly, I have many years experience with C# & .NET and some with Java. But, rather than committing to Java and developing native applications for Andriod I have been researching cross-platform deployment technologies. Currently, the most powerful cross-platform technology seems to be Flash, using Adobe AIR to package software as native applications. But given Adobe's announcement that it will discontinue support for the Flash Player on mobile devices it seems foolish (at this late stage) to invest in Flash and ActionScript as a developer. There has been speculation that Microsoft are also planning their exit strategy for Silverlight in favour of HTML5. So, my questions are; What is the most appropriate technology to invest in and learn in order to build cross-platform mobile applications / games while future proofing my skills as a developer? Is HTML5 mature enough to fill the 'Flash void' and be used to start building cross-platform, rich, interactive, networked mobile applications / games now? N.B. • Healthcare Mobile Database Synchronization Demonstration

  Like many of you, I learn best by getting my hands dirty.  When confronted with the task of understanding a new set of products and technologies and figuring out how they might apply to a vertical industry like healthcare, I set out to create a demonstration.  The video that follows aims to show how the Oracle embedded software portfolio can be applied to a healthcare application.  The demonstration utilizes among others, Java SE Embedded, Berkeley DB, Apache Tomcat, Oracle 11gR2 and Oracle Database Mobile Server. • Is it possible to power up ports on a USB hub from Ubuntu?

  I have a D-Link DUB-H7 powered USB 2.0 hub connected to my computer. Occasionally when I reboot the system, I've noticed that some of the ports on the hub get powered down: the green light next to the port is turned off, and the device attached to that port is not visible to lsusb or similar commands. Devices attached to the other ports on the hub function as normal. I am able to restore the ports by disconnecting power to the hub temporarily (from the computer, AC adapter and any devices that might provide any power such as my phone), but this is a bit of a hassle. It seems like something that might be related to power management, so is there some way you can tell the USB hub to power up through software?

  I use Linux and other open source software in my home. As I'm not a professional coder, I usually report bugs to developers as my skills are not enough to solve problems on my own. What kind of things you want me to check before I send a bug report? I mean, once I thought I found a bug in Gedit and I couldn't find similar bug in Bugzilla. But after I sent the report, some developer said that the bug is already in Bugzilla as the bug was in GTK+, not in Gedit. Sometimes it might be hard for an amateur to guess whether some previously known bug would solve the issue I found.

• What could be the reason for my resolution to be right running 11.10 on VirtualBox and not on machine?

  When I install Ubuntu 11.10 on my VirtualBox (running on Windows 7) and update the packages, it recognizes the display as the VirtualBox display, and gives me the options of various resolutions, one of them being right for my display, all works well. But then, when i install it on my machine (like was Windows 7) it doesn't give me the resolution options, even with the system updated and the openchrome graphics driver installed (which was also when running on Virtualbox). What could be the reason for this happening? (Could the VB guest software influence on this?)
